Abstract:A brief review is made of some of the experimental signatures that may be associated to a certain class of extensions of the standard model. The material of these lectures is divided into two sections. After briefly sketching the present observational status of the neutrino masses I consider various schemes of neutrino mass generation, including those which are motivated by present experimental hints from solar and atmospheric neutrinos, as well as cosmological data on the amplitude of primordial density fluctuations. Then some of the physics motivations and potential of various extensions of the standard model related to the electroweak breaking sector, such as supersymmetry, and extensions of the gauge boson sector are reviewed. The new signatures associated with both types of extension may all be accessible to experiments performed either at accelerators or at underground installations. The complementarity between these two approaches in the search for signals beyond the standard model is most vividly manifest in the field of neutrino physics.

Abstract:In this talk, I give an overview on recent theoretical and phenomenological studies of massive neutrinos. First of all, the present status of neutrino mixing parameters is summarized. The phenomenology of neutrino oscillations is then discussed, and current understanding of lepton flavor mixing is presented. Finally, I consider the seesaw models of neutrino masses and briefly mention the direct searches at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Abstract:The simplest Standard Model extension to explain neutrino masses involves the addition of right-handed neutrinos. At some level, this extension will impact neutrino oscillation searches. In this work we explore the differences and similarities between the case in which these neutrinos are kinematically accessible (sterile neutrinos) or not (mixing matrix non-unitarity). We clarify apparent inconsistencies in the present literature when using different parametrizations to describe these effects and recast both limits in the popular neutrino non-standard interaction (NSI) formalism. We find that, in the limit in which sterile oscillations are averaged out at the near detector, their effects at the far detector coincide with non-unitarity at leading order, even in presence of a matter potential. We also summarize the present bounds existing in both limits and compare them with the expected sensitivities of near future facilities taking the DUNE proposal as a benchmark. We conclude that non-unitarity effects are too constrained to impact present or near future neutrino oscillation facilities but that sterile neutrinos can play an important role at long baseline experiments. The role of the near detector is also discussed in detail.

Abstract:Improper Lorentz Transformations can be retained as exact symmetries of Nature if the particle content and gauge group of the Standard Model are doubled. The resulting ``Exact Parity Model (EPM)'' sees each ordinary particle paired with a mirror analogue. If neutrinos have mass and if they mix, then the EPM predicts that each ordinary neutrino will be maximally mixed with its mirror neutrino partner. This provides a very simple explanation for the very large mixing angle observed for atmospheric muon neutrinos by SuperKamiokande and other experiments. Maximal mixing for electron neutrinos is also well motivated by the solar neutrino problem. If small interfamily mixing is switched on, then the LSND anomaly can also be accomodated by the EPM. The EPM thus provides a unified, simple and to some extent predictive framework for explaining all of the anomalous neutrino data. This talk will briefly review the EPM or mirror neutrino scenario.

Abstract:We investigate forces induced by the exchange of two light neutrinos be- tween Standard Model (SM) fermions in the presence of effective operators parametrising physics beyond the SM. We first set up a general framework in which we derive the long-range potential mediated by weakly interacting neutrinos in the SM, retaining both spin-independent and spin-dependent terms. We then derive neutrino-mediated potentials when there are vector, scalar and tensor non-standard interactions present as well as an exotic neutrino magnetic moment. Examining the phenomenology of such long-range potentials in atomic scale laboratory experiments, we derive upper bounds on the Wilson coefficients of the effective operators and compare these to those from processes such as charged lepton flavour violation.

Kaluza-Klein Spectroscopy from Neutron Oscillations into Hidden Dimensions

Abstract:Neutrons and neutrinos are natural probes for new physics. Since they carry no conserved gauge quantum numbers, both can easily mix with the fermions from hidden sectors. A particularly interesting effect is the oscillation of a neutron or a neutrino into a fermion propagating in large extra dimensions. In fact, such a mixing has been identified as the possible origin of small neutrino mass. In this paper, we study neutron oscillations into an extra-dimensional fermion and show that this effect provides a resonance imaging of the Kaluza-Klein tower. The remarkable feature of this phenomenon is its generic nature: because of a fine spacing of the Kaluza-Klein tower, neutrons at a variety of energy levels, both free or within nuclei, find a bulk oscillation partner. In particular, the partner can be a Kaluza-Klein mode of the same species that gives mass to the neutrino. The existence of bulk states matching the neutron energy levels of nuclear spectra gives rise to tight constraints as well as to potentially observable effects. For a free neutron, we predict recurrent resonant oscillations occurring with the values of the magnetic field correlated with the KK levels. We derive bounds on extra dimensions from ultra-cold neutron experiments and suggest signatures for refined measurements, which, in particular, can probe the parameter space motivated by the Hierarchy Problem. Ultra-cold neutron experiments offer a unique way of Kaluza-Klein spectroscopy.

High-energy constraints from low-energy neutrino non-standard interactions

Abstract:Many scenarios of new physics predict the existence of neutrino Non-Standard Interactions, new vector contact interactions between neutrinos and first generation fermions beyond the Standard Model. We obtain model-independent constraints on the Standard Model Effective Field Theory at high energies from bounds on neutrino non-standard interactions derived at low energies. Our analysis explores a large set of new physics scenarios and includes full one-loop running effects below and above the electroweak scale. Our results show that neutrino non-standard interactions already push the scale of new physics beyond the TeV. We also conclude that bounds derived by other experimental probes, in particular by low-energy precision measurements and by charged lepton flavor violation searches, are generally more stringent. Our study constitutes a first step towards the systematization of phenomenological analyses to evaluate the impact of neutrino Non-Standard Interactions for new physics scenarios at high energies.

Abstract:The subtitle of my talk is ``The quest for understanding the origin of neutrino masses''. After reviewing why the discovery of neutrino masses is also the discovery of New Physics, the substance of the talk details mechanisms for generating Majorana neutrino masses and implications for experimental searches and/or cosmology. I review high-scale seesaw, low-scale seesaw and radiative mechanisms, asking at every turn how testable the scenario is. While it is clear that determining the origin of neutrino masses -- knowing what Lagrangian to put into textbooks -- is a distant and ambitious goal, I end with experimental advances that we can reasonably hope for that would constitute progress.

Abstract:We investigate non-standard interaction effects in antineutrino-electron scattering experiments with baselines short enough to ignore standard oscillation phenomena. The setup is free of ambiguities from the interference between new physics and oscillation effects and is sensitive to both semileptonic new physics at the source and purely leptonic new physics in the weak interaction scattering at the detector. We draw on the TEXONO experiment as the model system, extending its analysis of non-standard interaction effects at the detector to include the generally allowed non-standard interaction phase at the detector and both non-universal and flavor changing new physics at the reactor source. We confirm that the current data allows for new physics constraints at the detector of the same order as those currently published, but we find that constraints on the source new physics are at least an order of magnitude weaker. The new physics phase effects are at the 5% level, noticeable in the 90% C.L. contour plots but not significantly affecting the conclusions. Based on projected increase in sensitivity with an upgraded TEXONO experiment, we estimate the improvement of sensitivity to both source and detector non-standard interactions. We find that the bounds on source parameters improve by an order of magnitude, but do not reach parameter space beyond current limits. On the other hand, the detector new physics sensitivity would push current limits by factors 5 to 10 smaller.

Abstract:We propose a model of neutrino mass generation in extra dimension. Allowing a large lepton number violation on a distant brane spatially separated from the standard model brane, a small neutrino mass is naturally generated due to an exponential suppression of the messenger field in the 5D bulk. The model accommodates a large Yukawa coupling with the singlet neutrino (n_R) which may change the standard Higgs search and can simultaneously accommodate visible lepton number violation at the electroweak scale, which leads to very interesting phenomenology at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.

Abstract:The formalism of non-standard four-fermion interactions provides a convenient, model-independent way of parameterizing a wide class of ``new physics'' scenarios. In this article, we study the performance of reactor and superbeam neutrino experiments in the presence of such non-standard interactions (NSI). Due to interference between the standard and non-standard amplitudes, sizeable effects are to be expected if the NSI parameters are close to their current upper limits. We derive approximate formulas for the relevant oscillation probabilities including NSI, and show how the leading effects can be understood intuitively even without any calculations. We will present a classification of all possible NSI according to their impact on reactor and superbeam experiments, and it will turn out that these experiments are highly complementary in terms of their sensitivity to the non-standard parameters. The second part of the paper is devoted to detailed numerical simulations, which will demonstrate how a standard oscillation fit of the mixing angle theta-13 may fail if experimental data is affected by NSI. We find that for some non-standard terms, reactor and superbeam experiments would yield seemingly conflicting results, while in other cases, they may agree well with each other, but the resulting value for theta-13 could be far from the true value. This offset may be so large that the true theta-13 is even ruled out erroneously. In the last section of the paper, we demonstrate that reactor and superbeam data can actually establish the presence of non-standard interactions. Throughout our discussion, we pay special attention to the impact of the complex phases, and of the near detectors.

Abstract:We study spectral distortions of diffuse ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrino flavour fluxes resulting due to physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). Even large spectral differences between flavours at the source are massaged into a common shape at earth by SM oscillations, thus, any significant observed spectral differences are an indicator of new physics present in the oscillation probability during propagation. Neutrino decay and Lorentz symmetry violation (LV) are examples, and result in significant distortion of the fluxes and the well-known bounds on them, which may allow UHE detectors to probe lifetimes, the mass hierarchy and LV parameters over a broad range.

Supernova Neutrinos: flavour conversion mechanisms and new physics scenarios

Abstract:A core-collapse supernova (SN) releases almost all of its energy in the form of neutrinos, which provide a unique opportunity to probe the working machinery of a SN. These sites are prone to neutrino-neutrino refractive effects, which can lead to fascinating collective flavour oscillations among neutrinos. This causes rapid neutrino flavour conversions deep inside the SN even for suppressed mixing angles, with intriguing consequences for the explosion mechanism as well as nucleosynthesis. We review the physics of collective oscillations of neutrinos -- both slow and fast, along with the well-known resonant flavour conversion effects, and discuss the current state-of-the-art of the field. Furthermore, we discuss how neutrinos from a SN can be used to probe novel particle physics properties, extreme values of which are otherwise inaccessible in laboratories.

Abstract:The theory and phenomenology of neutrinos will be addressed, especially that relating to the observation of neutrino flavor transformations. The current status and implications for future experiments will be discussed with special emphasis on the experiments that will determine the neutrino mass ordering, the dominant flavor content of the neutrino mass eigenstate with the smallest electron neutrino content and the size of CP violation in the neutrino sector. Beyond the neutrino Standard Model, the evidence for and a possible definitive experiment to confirm or refute the existence of light sterile neutrinos will be briefly discussed.

Abstract:Neutrinoless double beta decay is the most powerful tool to probe not only for Majorana neutrino masses but for lepton number violating physics in general. We discuss relations between lepton number violation, double beta decay and neutrino mass, review a general Lorentz invariant parametrization of the double beta decay rate, highlight a number of different new physics models showing how different mechanisms can trigger double beta decay, and finally discuss possibilities to discriminate and test these models and mechanisms in complementary experiments.

Oscillations of High-Energy Cosmic Neutrinos in the Copious MeV Neutrino Background

Abstract:The core-collapse of massive stars and merger of neutron star binaries are among the most promising candidate sites for the production of high-energy cosmic neutrinos. We demonstrate that the high-energy neutrinos produced in such extreme environments can experience efficient flavor conversions on scales much shorter than those expected in vacuum, due to their coherent forward scatterings with the bath of decohered low-energy neutrinos emitted from the central engine. These low-energy neutrinos, which exist as mass eigenstates, provide a very special and peculiar dominant background for the propagation of the high-energy ones. We point out that the high-energy neutrino flavor ratio is modified to a value independent of neutrinos energies, which is distinct from the conventional prediction with the matter effect. We also suggest that the signals can be used as a novel probe of new neutrino interactions beyond the Standard Model. This is yet another context where neutrino-neutrino interactions can play a crucial role in their flavor evolution.
