We give an overview of searches for lepton-flavour violation in purely leptonic decays, hadron decays, and decays of heavy bosons. We focus on the most stringent constraints on lepton-flavour violating processes in these areas and give prospects for ongoing and future experiments.

Abstract:Neutrino masses provide evidence of lepton flavour violation, but no violation in the interactions among the charged leptons has been observed yet. Many models of Physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) predict Charged Lepton Flavour Violation (CLFV) in a wide spectrum of processes with rates in reach of upcoming experiments. The experimental searches that provide the current best limits on the CLFV searches are reviewed, with a particular emphasis on the muon-based experiments that give the most stringent constraints on BSM parameter space. The next generation of muon-based experiments (MEG-II, Mu2e, COMET, Mu3e) aim to reach improvements by many orders of magnitude w.r.t. the current best limits, thanks to several technological advancements. We review popular heavy BSM theories, and we present the calculations of the predicted CLFV branching ratios, focusing on the more sensitive $\mu\to e$ sector.

Charged lepton flavour violation in muons: theory overview

Abstract:We briefly overview some theoretical aspects of charged lepton flavour violation in rare muon transitions and decays. Relying on the effective field theory approach (model-independent), we discuss the probing power of charged lepton flavour violation processes regarding the new physics scale, especially in what concerns muon-electron conversion in nuclei. We then illustrate how these processes can provide valuable information (allowing to constrain, falsify - or conversely to learn about the underlying new physics properties) for a few examples of well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model. We finally comment on how leptonic CP violation should be carefully considered upon studies of charged lepton flavour violation in extensions of the Standard Model featuring heavy sterile fermions.

Abstract:In a supersymmetric extension of the standard model with local gauged baryon and lepton numbers (BLMSSM), there are new sources for lepton flavor violation, because the right-handed neutrinos and new gauginos are introduced. In BLMSSM, we study the charged lepton flavor violating processes l(j) -> l(i) + gamma and l(j) -> 3l(i) in detail. The numerical results show that in some parameter space the branching ratios for charged lepton flavor violating processes can be large enough to be detected in the near future.

Charged lepton flavour violation from inverse seesaw with flavour and CP symmetries

Abstract:We study charged lepton flavour violation in a scenario in which light neutrino masses are generated via the inverse seesaw mechanism with 3+3 gauge singlet fermions, Ni and Sj, i,j=1,2,3. Lepton mixing is predicted with the help of the flavour symmetries Delta (3 n^2) and Delta (6 n^2) combined with CP. In the neutral lepton sector, the non-trivial flavour structure is only encoded in the Dirac neutrino Yukawa matrix (the coupling relating left-handed lepton doublets and gauge singlets Ni). Current experimental bounds on the processes mu -> e gamma, mu -> 3 e, mu-e conversion in nuclei and the tau lepton decays tau -> l gamma and tau -> 3 l, l=e, mu, do not constrain the considered parameter space of this scenario. Prospective limits on the decay mu -> 3 e and mu-e conversion in aluminium instead can markedly reduce the available parameter space. We also comment on the effects of the heavy sterile states on light neutrino masses and lepton mixing.

Abstract:Charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) represents a clear new physics (NP) signal beyond the standard model (SM). In this work, we investigate CLFV processes lj−→li−γ utilizing mass insertion approximation (MIA) in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the SM with local B−L gauge symmetry ( B−L SSM). The MIA method can provide a set of simple analytic formulas for the form factors and the associated effective vertices, so that the movement of the CLFV decays lj−→li−γ with the sensitive parameters will be intuitively analyzed. Lepton flavor violation in supersymmetric low-scale seesaw models

Abstract:The minimal supersymmetric standard model with a low scale see-saw mechanism is presented. Within this framework, the lepton flavour violation in the charged lepton sector is thoroughly studied. Special attention is paid to the individual loop contributions due to the heavy neutrinos $N_{1,2,3}$, sneutrinos $\tilde{N}_{1,2,3}$ and soft SUSY-breaking terms. For the first time, the complete set of box diagrams is included, in addition to the photon and $Z$-boson mediated interactions. The complete set of chiral amplitudes and their associate form-factors related to the neutrinoless three-body charged lepton flavor violating decays of the muon and tau, such as $\mu \to eee$, $\tau \to \mu\mu\mu$, $\tau \to e\mu\mu$ and $\tau \to ee\mu$, as well as the coherent $\mu \to e$ conversion in nuclei, were derived. The obtained analytical results are general and can be applied to most of the New Physics models with charged lepton flavor violation. This systematic analysis has revealed the existence of two new box form factors, which have not been considered before in the existing literature in this area of physics. In the same model, the systematic study of one-loop contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic dipole moment $a_\mu$ and the electron electric dipole moment $d_e$ is performed. Special attention is paid to the effect of the sneutrino soft SUSY-breaking parameters, $B_\nu$ and $A_\nu$, and their universal CP phases ($\theta$ and $\phi$) on $a_\mu$ and $d_e$.

Abstract:Charged lepton flavor violation arises in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory at mass dimension six. The operators that induce neutrinoless muon and tauon decays are among the best constrained and are sensitive to new-physics scales up to $10^7\,$GeV. An entirely different class of lepton-flavor-violating operators violates lepton flavors by two units rather than one and does not lead to such clean signatures. Even the well-known case of muonium--anti-muonium conversion that falls into this category is only sensitive to two out of the three $\Delta L_\mu = - \Delta L_e = 2$ dimension-six operators. We derive constraints on many of these operators from lepton flavor universality and show how to make further progress with future searches at Belle II and future experiments such as $Z$ factories or muon colliders.

Abstract:We examine the parameter space region of the inverse seesaw model that is consistent with neutrino oscillation data. We focus on the correlation between the current limits from the search of the $\mu\to e\gamma$ lepton flavor violating decay and the non-standard effects associated with the presence of new heavy neutrino states. Unlike what we would expect from an inverse seesaw model, we present a structure for the neutrinos mass matrices in which the rates of charged lepton flavor-violating processes are negligible. Additionally, we provide a model based on symmetries for such a scenario.

Abstract:Lepton flavor violation (LFV), observed conclusively in neutrino oscillations, remains a pivotal area of investigation due to its absence in the Standard Model (SM). Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics explores charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV), particularly through new particle candidates such as the Z ′ . This article focuses on maximal LFV interactions facilitated by the Z ′ boson, specifically targeting its off-diagonal interactions with the first and second generations of charged and neutral leptons. In our ultraviolet (UV) model for the origin of the Z ′ , inspired by the work of [R.Foot et al., Phys.Rev. D50 (1994) 4571-4580], we utilize the discrete Z 2 symmetry to investigate the maximal LFV mediated by the Z ′ between the muon ( μ ) and electron ( e ) arising from the additional scalars. This symmetry prohibits flavor-conserving interactions between Z ′ and μ + μ − , e + e − . In conjunction with collider, ( g – 2) μ , ( g – 2) e , inverse μ decay, Muonium-to-Antimuonium conversion and LFV decay constraints, we provide forecasts for anticipated limits derived from processes such as ν μ N → ν e μ + e − N in neutrino trident experiments like the DUNE search at the first time. These limits highlight the prospective scope and significance of LFV investigations within these experimental frameworks. Within the mass range of 0.01 GeV to 10 GeV, the most stringent limit arises from when , while ∆ a e provides effective constraints as approaches 10 GeV. Looking ahead, the proposed Muonium-to-Antimuonium Conversion Experiment (MACE) is expected to impose the most stringent constraints on Muonium-to-Antimuonium oscillation, improving sensitivity by about one order of magnitude against ∆ a e .

An Overview of the Searches for the Violation of the Charge-Parity Symmetry in the Leptonic Sector

Abstract:The existence of a violation of the Charge-Parity (CP) symmetry in the laws of physics is one of the cornerstone conditions for the generation of a matter–antimatter imbalance necessary to the creation of a matter-dominated universe. The first experimental evidence of the fact that this symmetry is broken in nature was obtained in 1964 in the observations of the decays of neutral kaon mesons. The magnitude of CP violation in the quark sector was measured with an increasing precision exploring also decays of other mesons. However, CP violation in the quark sector alone is not sufficient to explain the formation of matter-dominated universe, and additional sources are required. One such potential source is the lepton sector, where the CP violation could be observed by studying neutrino oscillations with neutrino beams generated by particle accelerators. This article reviews the present efforts in this direction. The results obtained in the ongoing experiments, T2K in Japan and NOvA in USA, are discussed. Additionally, the search for leptonic CP violation is one of the key goals in the programs of future experiments, DUNE in USA and Hyper-Kamiokande in Japan. These experiments and their prospects for its discovery are also presented.

Lepton Flavor Violation in Semileptonic Observables

Abstract:In this paper, we perform a comprehensive study of Lepton Flavor Violation (LFV) in semileptonic transitions in the framework of an Effective Field Theory with general flavor structure. We account for the Renormalization Group Equations (RGEs), which induce non-trivial correlations between the different types of LFV processes. In particular, we show that these loop effects are needed to improve the bounds on several coefficients that are not efficiently constrained at tree level. For illustration, we consider a few concrete scenarios, with predominant couplings to third-generation quarks, and we explore the correlations between the various tree- and loop-level constraints on these models. As a by-product, we also provide expressions for several semileptonic LFV meson decays by using the latest determinations of the relevant hadronic form factors on the lattice.
