Abstract:We review the experimental status of searches for lepton-flavour violation in the charged sector. We give an overview of searches for lepton-flavour violation in purely leptonic decays, hadron decays, and decays of heavy bosons. We focus on the most stringent constraints on lepton-flavour violating processes in these areas and give prospects for ongoing and future experiments.

Charged lepton flavour violation in muons: theory overview

Abstract:We briefly overview some theoretical aspects of charged lepton flavour violation in rare muon transitions and decays. Relying on the effective field theory approach (model-independent), we discuss the probing power of charged lepton flavour violation processes regarding the new physics scale, especially in what concerns muon-electron conversion in nuclei. We then illustrate how these processes can provide valuable information (allowing to constrain, falsify - or conversely to learn about the underlying new physics properties) for a few examples of well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model. We finally comment on how leptonic CP violation should be carefully considered upon studies of charged lepton flavour violation in extensions of the Standard Model featuring heavy sterile fermions.

Abstract:Neutrino masses provide evidence of lepton flavour violation, but no violation in the interactions among the charged leptons has been observed yet. Many models of Physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) predict Charged Lepton Flavour Violation (CLFV) in a wide spectrum of processes with rates in reach of upcoming experiments. The experimental searches that provide the current best limits on the CLFV searches are reviewed, with a particular emphasis on the muon-based experiments that give the most stringent constraints on BSM parameter space. The next generation of muon-based experiments (MEG-II, Mu2e, COMET, Mu3e) aim to reach improvements by many orders of magnitude w.r.t. the current best limits, thanks to several technological advancements. We review popular heavy BSM theories, and we present the calculations of the predicted CLFV branching ratios, focusing on the more sensitive $\mu\to e$ sector.

Discovering a Novel Dynamics Mechanism for Charmonium Scattering

Abstract:In this letter, we propose a novel mechanism for charmonium scattering that utilizes the internal structure of charmonium. By capturing light flavor quarks and anti-quarks from the vacuum, charm and anti-charm quarks form virtual charmed mesons, which mediate an effective one-boson exchange process. This approach accurately reproduces the di-$J/\psi$ invariant mass spectrum observed by CMS and LHCb, demonstrating its validity. Our mechanism offers a comprehensive framework for understanding charmonium scattering and is applicable to the scattering problems involving all fully heavy hadrons, an area of increasing interest.

Search for charged-lepton flavor violation in the production and decay of top quarks using trilepton final states

Abstract:This document describes a search for charged-lepton flavor violation (CLFV) in the production and decay of top quarks using 138 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Events are selected for analysis if they contain an opposite-sign electron-muon pair, a third charged lepton (electron or muon), at least one jet, and at most one jet associated with a bottom quark. The analysis utilizes boosted decision trees to separate background processes from a possible signal. The data were found to be consistent with the standard model expectation. Exclusion limits were placed on different CLFV interactions, constituting the most stringent limits to date on these processes.

Searching for Lepton Flavor Violation with the CMS Experiment

Abstract:Searches for lepton flavor violation (LFV) stand at the forefront of experimental particle physics research, offering a sensitive probe to many scenarios of physics beyond the Standard Model. The high proton-proton collision energy and luminosity provided by the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the excellent CMS detector performance allow for an extensive program of LFV searches. This article reviews a broad range of LFV searches conducted at the CMS experiment using data collected in LHC Run 2, including $\tau\to3\mu$ decays, Higgs boson decays, and top quark production and decays. In each analysis, the online and offline event selections, signal modeling, background suppression and estimation, and statistical interpretation are elucidated. These searches involve various final state particles in a large transverse momentum range, showcasing the capability of the CMS experiment in exploring fundamental questions in particle physics.

In this work, we investigate the CLFV decays of vector mesons $V\rightarrow l_i^{\pm}l_j^{\mp}$ with $V\in\{\phi, J/\Psi, \Upsilon(1S), \Upsilon(2S),\Upsilon(3S)\}$ in the $\mathrm{U}(1)_{X} \mathrm{SSM}$. Considering the SM-like Higgs boson mass within $3\sigma$ region and the experimental upper bounds of $Br(l_j\to l_i\gamma)$, we discuss the corresponding constraints on the relevant parameter space of the model. From the numerical analyses, the CLFV sources originated from the non-diagonal elements correspond to the initial and final generations of the leptons. And the branching ratios to these CLFV processes can easily reach the present experimental upper bounds, which indicate that this model can produce significant contributions to such CLFV decays. Therefore, searching for CLFV processes of vector mesons may be an effective channel to study new physics.

Abstract:Low-energy experiments involving kaon, B-meson, D-meson, and hyperon flavor-changing neutral transitions have confirmed the loop-induced flavor-changing neutral current picture of the standard model. The continuing study of these processes is essential to further refine this picture and ultimately understand the flavor dynamics. In this paper we consider deviations from the standard model in the charm sector and their effect on flavor-changing neutral current processes. Specifically, we parametrize new physics in terms of left- and right-handed anomalous couplings of the W boson to the charm quark. We present a comprehensive study of existing constraints and point out those measurements that are most sensitive to new physics of this type.

Abstract:Abstract In a supersymmetric extension of the standard model with local gauged baryon and lepton numbers (BLMSSM), there are new sources for lepton flavor violation, because the right-handed neutrinos and new gauginos are introduced. In BLMSSM, we study the charged lepton flavor violating processes lj → li + γ and lj → 3li in detail. The numerical results show that in some parameter space the branching ratios for charged lepton flavor violating processes can be large enough to be detected in the near future.

Abstract:We study the lepton flavor violating process, e + T -> tau + T', at a few GeV. This process can be studied by experiments directing GeV scale electron or positron beams on internal or fixed targets. We study the effects of some low energy lepton flavor violating interactions on this process. We study the sensitivities of this process on these low energy lepton flavor violating interactions and compare them to the sensitivities of lepton flavor violating tau decay processes. Comparing with tau decay processes, this process provides another way to study the lepton flavor violating effects with e - tau conversion and it can be searched for in facilities with GeV scale electron or positron beams which are available in a number of laboratories in the world.
Charged lepton flavour violation from inverse seesaw with flavour and CP symmetries

Abstract:We study charged lepton flavour violation in a scenario in which light neutrino masses are generated via the inverse seesaw mechanism with 3+3 gauge singlet fermions, Ni and Sj, i,j=1,2,3. Lepton mixing is predicted with the help of the flavour symmetries Delta (3 n^2) and Delta (6 n^2) combined with CP. In the neutral lepton sector, the non-trivial flavour structure is only encoded in the Dirac neutrino Yukawa matrix (the coupling relating left-handed lepton doublets and gauge singlets Ni). Current experimental bounds on the processes mu -> e gamma, mu -> 3 e, mu-e conversion in nuclei and the tau lepton decays tau -> l gamma and tau -> 3 l, l=e, mu, do not constrain the considered parameter space of this scenario. Prospective limits on the decay mu -> 3 e and mu-e conversion in aluminium instead can markedly reduce the available parameter space. We also comment on the effects of the heavy sterile states on light neutrino masses and lepton mixing.

A Comparative Study of Z′ Mediated Charged Lepton Flavor Violation at Future Lepton Colliders

Abstract:Abstract Charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) represents a transition between charged leptons of different generations that violates lepton flavor conservation, which is a clear signature of possible new physics beyond the standard model. By exploiting a typical example model of extra Z′ gauge boson, we perform a detailed comparative study on CLFV searches at several future lepton colliders, including a 240 GeV electron-positron collider and a TeV scale muon collider. Based on detailed signal and background Monte-Carlo studies with fast detector simulations, we derive the potentials in searching for Z′ mediated CLFV couplings with eμ, eτ and μτ of different future colliders. The results are compared with the current and prospect limits set by either low-energy experiments or the high-energy LHC experiments. The sensitivity of the τ related CLFV coupling strength at future lepton colliders will be significantly improved in comparison to the current best constraints and the prospect constraints for the μτ channel.

Abstract:Charged lepton flavor violation arises in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory at mass dimension six. The operators that induce neutrinoless muon and tauon decays are among the best constrained and are sensitive to new-physics scales up to $10^7\,$GeV. An entirely different class of lepton-flavor-violating operators violates lepton flavors by two units rather than one and does not lead to such clean signatures. Even the well-known case of muonium--anti-muonium conversion that falls into this category is only sensitive to two out of the three $\Delta L_\mu = - \Delta L_e = 2$ dimension-six operators. We derive constraints on many of these operators from lepton flavor universality and show how to make further progress with future searches at Belle II and future experiments such as $Z$ factories or muon colliders.

Abstract:The search for charged-lepton flavor violation in muon capture on nuclei is a powerful probe of heavy new physics. A smoking gun signal for $\mu \rightarrow e$ conversion is a monochromatic electron with energy almost equal to the muon mass. We show that light new physics can mimic this signature and that it can also lead to electrons above the $\mu \rightarrow e$ signal peak. A concrete example of such light new physics is $\mu^- $-nucleon annihilation into a light dark sector, which can produce an energetic $e^-$ as well as $e^+e^-$ byproducts. Due to the size of the muon mass, the exotic muon capture process can be kinematically allowed, while the otherwise stringent constraints, e.g., from proton decay, are kinematically forbidden. We also discuss other relevant constraints, including those from the stability of nuclei and muon capture in the interior of neutron stars.
