Abstract:The shuttle effect of polysulfide and the flammability of the conventional electrolyte are the two major obstacles restricting the development progress of lithium-sulfur batteries. Exploring highly efficient electrolyte components coupled with the conventional electrolyte is a reliable strategy to solve these issues. However, the current electrolyte components usually relieve these issues at the expense of the sacrificed electrochemical performance. Herein, a novel zwitterionic ionic liquid named as TLTFSI is reported, which exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 3.7 x 10(-3) S cm(-1), a wide electrochemical potential window from 1.51 to 4.82 V at 25 degrees C, and a high thermal decomposition temperature of 275 degrees C. The optimized TLTFSI-based electrolyte is nonflammable and performs superior electrochemical performance in terms of larger capacity, better rate capability, and longer cyclic life compared with the conventional organic electrolyte. The robust performance is attributed to the high intrinsic ionic conductivity, the suppressed polysulfide dissolution/diffusion, and the high interface compatibility toward the lithium anode of the TLTFSI-based electrolytes. This present work represents the first demonstration of the zwitterionic ionic liquid to efficiently improve the overall electrochemical performance and the safety of lithium-sulfur batteries.

Abstract:A high performance Li-S battery with novel fluoroether-based electrolyte was reported. The fluorinated electrolyte prevents the polysulfide shuttling effect and improves the Coulombic efficiency and capacity retention of the Li-S battery. Reversible redox reaction of the sulfur electrode in the presence of fluoroether TTE was systematically investigated. Electrochemical tests and post-test analysis using HPLC, XPS, and SEM/EDS were performed to examine the electrode and the electrolyte after cycling. The results demonstrate that TTE as a cosolvent mitigates polysulfide dissolution and promotes conversion kinetics from polysulfides to Li2S/Li2S2. Furthermore, TTE participates in a redox reaction on both electrodes, forming a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) which further prevents parasitic reactions and thus improves the utilization of the active material.
Highly Fluorinated Interphases Enable High-Voltage Li-Metal Batteries

Abstract:We were able to demonstrate excellent cycling performance of Li-metal anodes in carbonate electrolytes by increasing the Li bis(fluorosulfonyl) imide (LiFSI) concentration to similar to 10 M. The high concentration (10 M) of FSI anion enabled interphases of high F content on both Li-metal anode and Ni-rich NMC (nickelmanganese- cobalt) cathode surfaces. Such F-rich interphases effectively suppressed Li dendrite formation, as demonstrated by a high Li plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency of similar to 99.3%, and stabilized the carbonatemolecules against oxidation at high cutoff voltages of 4.6 V on the surface of LiNi0.Mn-6(0).Co-2(0).O-2(2) (NMC622). The combination of unique stabilization on both Li-metal anode and NMC622 cathodes enabled high-energy Li-metal batteries constructed on the aggressive chemistry. Under the harsh conditions of a high charge voltage of 4.6 V and high loading of 2.5 mAh/cm(2), the NMC622 vertical bar vertical bar Li cells retained similar to 86% of their original capacity after 100 cycles. The electrolyte strategy presented here offers unique guidelines for further optimizing beyond Li-ion chemistries.
Flame-retardant concentrated electrolyte enabling a LiF-rich solid electrolyte interface to improve cycle performance of wide-temperature lithium–sulfur batteries

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries have been regarded as the most promising high-energy electrochemical energy storage device owing to the high energy density, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, traditional lithium-sulfur batteries using ether-based electrolytes often suffer from severe safety risks (i.e. combustion). Herein, we demonstrated a novel kind of flame-retardant concentrated electrolyte (6.5 M lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulphonyl)imide/fluoroethylene carbonate) for highly-safe and wide-temperature lithium-sulfur batteries. It was found that such concentrated electrolyte showed superior flame retardancy, high lithium-ion transference number (0.69) and steady lithium plating/stripping behavior (2.5 mAh cm−2 over 3000 h). Moreover, lithium-sulfur batteries using this flame-retardant concentrated electrolyte delivered outstanding cycle performance in a wide range of temperatures (−10 °C, 25 °C and 90 °C). This superior battery performance is mainly attributed to the LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase formed on lithium metal anode, which can effectively suppress the continuous growth of lithium dendrites. Above-mentioned fascinating characteristics would endow this flame-retardant concentrated electrolyte a very promising candidate for highly-safe and wide-temperature lithium-sulfur batteries.

Abstract:Tri(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl) borate is identified as a new multifunctional additive for stable cycling of high energy density Li–S batteries. It forms strong complexes with all polysulfide and smooth the otherwise dramatically changing polysulfide solubilities during battery cycling. These complexes improve the kinetics of thick sulfur cathodes under lean conditions via a redox catalysis mechanism and protect Li anodes via strong interfacial films. Many challenges in lithium‐sulfur (Li–S) batteries are associated with the radical change in lithium polysulfide (LPS) solubility during cycling, but chemical approaches to address such inconsistency are still lacking. Here, the use of a strong Lewis acidic fluorinated organoboron, tri(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl) borate (TFEB), is reported as a multi‐functional mediator to simultaneously overcome multiple technical barriers in practical Li–S batteries. TFEB acts as an anion acceptor and forms strong molecular complexes with Lewis basic LPS. The TFEB‐LPS complexes have consistent solubility across the full polysulfide spectrum and deliver several times improved better redox kinetics, unlocking a true redox catalytic mechanism that covers the majority of redox events in thick sulfur cathodes. As a result, Li–S batteries evaluated under practical conditions exhibit significantly improved discharge capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability with the addition of the TFEB additive. More importantly, TFEB also contributes to the stabilization of lithium anode in the presence of polysulfides by generating strong interfacial film. These attributes significantly improve the cycling stability of practical Li–S pouch cells, which are assembled with a unit energy density of 219 Wh kg−1. The results provide new molecular insights on the design of unlocking solvation networks of practical Li–S systems.

Abstract:The mass fraction of electrolytes is the crucial factor affecting the energy density of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Due to the high porosity within the C/S cathode, high concentration of polysulfides, and side reaction in lithiun metal anode under lean electrolyte, it is extremely challenging to improve performance while reducing the electrolyte volume. Here, we report a novel electrolyte with relatively low density (1.16 g cm−3), low viscosity (1.84 mPa s), and high ionic conductivity, which significantly promotes energy density and cyclability of Li-S batteries under practical conditions. Moreover, such electrolyte enables a hybrid cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer with plentiful LiF, which leads to fast kinetics of ions transport and stable cyclability even under low temperatures. Compared to Li-S batteries in electrolyte employing 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE) diluent, the ultra-thick cathode (20 mg cm−2) shows a high capacity of 9.48 mAh cm−2 and excellent capacity retention of 80.3% over 191 cycles at a low electrolyte-to-sulfur ratio (E/S = 2) and negative-to-positive capacity ratio (N/P = 2.5), realizing a 19.2% improvement in energy density in coin cells (from 370 to 441 Wh kg−1) and a high energy density up to 467 Wh kg−1 in pouch cells. This study not only provides guidance for the electrolyte design but also paves the way for the development of high performance Li-S batteries under practical conditions.

Abstract:Silicon is considered as the next-generation anode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical specific capacity and abundant crustal abundance. However, its poor electrical conductivity results in slow diffusion of lithium ions during battery operation. Simultaneously, the alloying process of silicon undergoes a 300 % volume change, leading to structural fractures in silicon during the cycling process. As a result, it loses contact with the current collector, continuously exposing active sites, and forming a sustained solid electrolyte interface (SEI) membrane. This paper presents the design of a fluorine-ion-regulated yolk-shell carbon-silicon anode material, highlighting the following advantages: (a) Alleviating volume changes through the design of a yolk-shell structure, thereby maintaining material structural integrity during cycling. (b) Carbon shell prevents silicon from coming into contact with the electrolyte, simultaneously improving silicon's electrical conductivity and increasing ion/electron conductivity. (c) Utilizing fluorine-ion interface modification to obtain an SEI membrane rich in fluorine components (such as LiF), thereby enhancing its long cycling performance. The F-Si@Void@C exhibits outstanding electrochemical performance, with a reversible capacity of 1166 mAh/g after 900 cycles at a current density of 0.5 A/g.
Fluorinated Co-Solvent Promises Li-S Batteries under Lean-Electrolyte Conditions

Abstract:Practical lithium-sulfur batteries stipulate the use of a lean-electrolyte and a high Coulombic efficiency of the lithium metal anode. Herein, we employ 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl ether as a co-solvent in the electrolyte of Li-S batteries to meet the demands. The co-solvent fosters the formation of a LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase on lithium metal anode, as revealed by Ab initio molecular dynamics and Femtosecond Stimulated Raman spectroscopy. The co-solvent results in an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.4% for lithium plating/stripping cycles. Full cells with a capacity ratio of 2 between lithium anode and the S@PAN cathode (3 mg(s) cm(-2)) exhibited a stable cycle life over 100 cycles at an electrolyte/sulfur ratio of 2 mu L mg(-1), validating the high Coulombic efficiency of the lithium anode and demonstrating the compatibility of the electrolyte with both electrodes. To enhance the energy density, we prepared a hybrid cathode composed of 45 wt.% VS2 mixed with ZnS-coated Li2S@graphene as the cathode. Based on the mass of both electrodes and the electrolyte, the full cell delivers an energy density of 483 Wh kg(-1), which demonstrates viable Li-S batteries with the lean electrolyte.

Abstract:The advancement of liquid electrolytes in Li-metal batteries is an important strategy to realize a robust and uniform solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the Li metal anode while simultaneously achieving high oxidative stability and addressing the shortcomings of traditional carbonate and ether-based electrolytes suffering from side reactions and high-voltage decomposition, respectively. To circumvent these challenges, here, a fluorinated dioxolane-based cyclic co-solvent, that is 2-(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy)-4-(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dioxolane (TTD), is developed. After pairing 1.5 M lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) with TTD and 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME), the 1.5 M LiFSI-8TTD-2DME electrolyte exhibits remarkable oxidation stability up to 6 V and a Coulombic efficiency of 99.4% over 210 cycles at 3 mA cm–2 with a cut-off capacity of 3 mA h cm–2 in the Li|Cu half-cell originating from efficient regulation of the electrolyte solvation structure and consequent anion-derived inorganic SEI layer formation. Full cells with advanced electrolytes, using 20 μm of Li foil paired with the NCM811 cathode by a negative and positive capacity ratio (N/P) of 2.5, achieve 75% capacity retention after 160 cycles at 0.5 C. Furthermore, even at an ultra-high charge cut-off voltage of 4.7 V, the Li|NCM811 full cell still realizes 80% retention at 0.5 C after 100 cycles.

Abstract:Rechargeable Li–S batteries are regarded as one of the most promising next‐generation energy‐storage systems. However, the inevitable formation of Li dendrites and the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides significantly weakens electrochemical performance, preventing its practical application. Herein, a new class of localized high‐concentration electrolyte (LHCE) enabled by adding inert fluoroalkyl ether of 1H,1H,5H‐octafluoropentyl‐1,1,2,2‐tetrafluoroethyl ether into highly‐concentrated electrolytes (HCE) lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl) imide/dimethoxyether (DME) system is reported to suppress Li dendrite formation and minimize the solubility of the high‐order polysulfides in electrolytes, thus reducing the amount of electrolyte in cells. Such a unique LHCE can achieve a high coulombic efficiency of Li plating/stripping up to 99.3% and completely suppressing the shuttling effect, thus maintaining a S cathode capacity of 775 mAh g−1 for 150 cycles with a lean electrolyte of 4.56 g A−1 h−1. The LHCE reduces the solubility of lithium polysulfides, allowing the Li/S cell to achieve super performance in a lean electrolyte. This conception of using inert diluents in a highly concentrated electrolyte can accelerate commercialization of Li–S battery technology.

Abstract:We report a new carbonate electrolyte of 1 M LiFSI dissolved in the EMC/FEC (70/30, v/v) solvent for lithium metal based batteries. Favorable LiF-rich SEI layer is formed on Li anode to suppress side reactions under the synergistic effect of LiFSI and FEC. Thus, the dendrite-free Li morphology and high Coulombic efficiency for Li plating/stripping can be obtained with improved cycle stability compared with conventional LiPF6/EC-DMC electrolyte. Li vertical bar S@pPAN cell assembled with the new electrolyte shows quite low lithium ion transfer resistance, excellent long cycle stability and rate performance. A high discharge capacity of 1270 mAh g(-1) remains after 1000 cycles at 2 C, with an inappreciable capacity decay of 0.0015% per cycle. Due to the low interface impedance and high Li+ diffusion coefficient, a capacity of 1210 mAh g(-1) even at 10 C can be maintained. This deliberately designed electrolyte offers new insights into the understanding of interfacial stability between electrolyte and Li anode. Abstract:The drawbacks of temperature sensitivity, high voltage intolerance, and flammability of lithium batteries are gradually brought to light in conventional carbonate electrolytes. To solve these problems, a localized high concentration electrolyte (LHCE) employing highly fluorinated ethyl trifluoroacetate (TFAE) and 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoro-1-(1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethoxy) propane (TFEP) is designed. When applied in high-energy lithium batteries, the discharge specific capacity of Li||NMC811 battery can maintain 143.6 mAh/g after 500 cycles at 4.6 V and 1C, and the capacity retention of Li||LNMO battery retains as high as 89.99 % after 500 cycles at 5 V. In addition, this LHCE also possesses the ability to operate the battery under challenging conditions including low temperature, fast charge, safety risks, etc. The LHCE based on TFAE and TFEP has unique solvated structures to generate a moderate LiF-rich interfacial layer, ensuring the fast Li+ migration. This work will provide strong guidance for future electrolyte industrial design of high-energy lithium battery.

Abstract:The lithium metal anode (LMA) instability at deep cycle with high utilization is a crucial barrier for developing lithium (Li) metal batteries, resulting in excessive Li inventory and electrolyte demand. This issue becomes more severe in capacity-type lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. High-concentration or localized high-concentration electrolytes are noted as effective strategies to stabilize Li metal but usually lead to a high electrolyte density (>1.4 g mL−1). Here we propose a bifunctional fluorinated silane-based electrolyte with a low density of 1.0 g mL−1 that not only is much lighter than conventional electrolytes (≈1.2 g mL−1) but also form a robust solid electrolyte interface to minimize Li depletion. Therefore, the Li loss rate is reduced over 4.5-fold with the proposed electrolyte relative to its conventional counterpart. When paired with onefold excess LMA at the electrolyte weight/cell capacity (E/C) ratio of 4.5 g Ah−1, the Li–S pouch cell using our electrolyte can survive for 103 cycles, much longer than with the conventional electrolyte (38 cycles). This demonstrates that our electrolyte not only reduces the E/C ratio but also enhances the cyclic stability of Li–S batteries under limited Li amounts.

Abstract:Lithium metal battery has been regarded as promising next-generation battery system aiming for higher energy density. However, the lithium metal anode suffers severe side-reaction and dendrite issues. Its electrochemical performance is significantly depended on the electrolyte components and solvation structure. Herein, a series of fluorinated ethers are synthesized with weak-solvation ability owing to the duple steric effect derived from the designed longer carbon chain and methine group. The electrolyte solvation structure rich in AGGs (97.76%) enables remarkable CE of 99.71% (25 °C) as well as high CE of 98.56% even at -20 °C. Moreover, the lithium-sulfur battery exhibits excellent performance in a wide temperature range (-20 to 50 °C) ascribed to the modified interphase rich in LiF/LiO2. Furthermore, the pouch cell delivers superior energy density of 344.4 Wh kg-1 and maintains 80% capacity retention after 50 cycles. The novel solvent design via molecule chemistry provides alternative strategy to adjust solvation structure and thus favors high-energy density lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:A new ether-based electrolyte with tetrahydrofuran (THF) and di-isopropyl ether (DIPE) is proposed for Lithium–Sulfur battery (LSB). By employing the common ion effect and the weakly-solvating solvent (such as DIPE), the dissolution of lithium polysulfides and the self-discharge effect are effectively inhibited. Besides, the LiFSI has be used as the co-salt in the LiTFSI-based electrolyte to improve the ionic conductivity and inhibit the side reaction on Li metal anode. It is worth mentioning that, the L1L2TD-1382 electrolyte (LiTFSI: LiFSI: THF: DIPE = 1 : 3: 8 : 2, molar ratio) ensures a stable cycling for more than 500 cycles with a high Columbic efficiency (CE) of Li deposition/stripping (>99.3%). Impressively, with selenium doped sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SeSPAN) cathode, the Li–S cell has delivered a high capacity of 626 mAh g−1 in 500th cycle with an excellent capacity retention no less than 93%. This work provides a new insight to electrolyte design strategy of advanced electrolytes for Li–S batteries.

Abstract:Fluorinated-ethers are promising electrolyte solvents in lithium metal batteries, for their high antioxidant and excellent reductive stability on Li anode. However, fluorinated-ethers with high fluorination degree suffer from low ionic conductivity and narrow temperature adaptibility. Herein, we synthesize a mono-fluorinated linear ether of bis(2-fluoroethoxy) methane (BFME) with enhanced solvated ability. The -OCH2O- structure and fluoride substitution on the β-C position endows the BFME electrolyte with moderate affinity to Li+, thereby improving the ionic conductivity and decreasing the Li+-desolvation energy barrier at a wide temperature range of -60 ̶ 60 oC. Additionally, the electrolyte with anion-participated solvation structure demonstrates high film-forming ability by forming LiF-rich interfacial film on the electrode surfaces, rendering the graphite anode with an initial Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 94.9% and a Li plating/stripping CE of 99.8% by Aurbach method. Consequently, the Graphite||LiFePO4 pouch cells delivered 83.2%, 92.5% and 81.2% capacity retention after 1250, 200 and 300 cycles at 25, -20 oC and 60 oC, respectively. Moreover, the Li||LFP pouch cell with 3 Ah capacity can operate for 65 cycles with 99% capacity retention, verifying the effectiveness of the BFME electrolyte in stabilizing the interfaces and broadening the temperature adaptibility of lithium-ion and lithium metal batteries.
