Abstract:Abstract1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE), a kind of fluorinated ether, was used as an electrolyte additive for Li-S batteries. A compact, smooth, and homogenous surface layer was formed on lithium anode at the optimized amount of added TTE. In addition, TTE additive played a crucial role in modifying the composition of the passivation layer on the sulfur/carbon cathode. Consequently, the dissolution and shuttling of polysulfides were effectively prevented. The reversible capacity, initial coulombic efficiency, electrode reaction kinetic, and cycling stability of Li-S batteries were greatly improved.

Abstract:The shuttle effect of polysulfide and the flammability of the conventional electrolyte are the two major obstacles restricting the development progress of lithium-sulfur batteries. Exploring highly efficient electrolyte components coupled with the conventional electrolyte is a reliable strategy to solve these issues. However, the current electrolyte components usually relieve these issues at the expense of the sacrificed electrochemical performance. Herein, a novel zwitterionic ionic liquid named as TLTFSI is reported, which exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 3.7 x 10(-3) S cm(-1), a wide electrochemical potential window from 1.51 to 4.82 V at 25 degrees C, and a high thermal decomposition temperature of 275 degrees C. The optimized TLTFSI-based electrolyte is nonflammable and performs superior electrochemical performance in terms of larger capacity, better rate capability, and longer cyclic life compared with the conventional organic electrolyte. The robust performance is attributed to the high intrinsic ionic conductivity, the suppressed polysulfide dissolution/diffusion, and the high interface compatibility toward the lithium anode of the TLTFSI-based electrolytes. This present work represents the first demonstration of the zwitterionic ionic liquid to efficiently improve the overall electrochemical performance and the safety of lithium-sulfur batteries.
A Fluorinated Lewis Acidic Organoboron Tunes Polysulfide Complex Structure for High‐Performance Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Tri(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl) borate is identified as a new multifunctional additive for stable cycling of high energy density Li–S batteries. It forms strong complexes with all polysulfide and smooth the otherwise dramatically changing polysulfide solubilities during battery cycling. These complexes improve the kinetics of thick sulfur cathodes under lean conditions via a redox catalysis mechanism and protect Li anodes via strong interfacial films. Many challenges in lithium‐sulfur (Li–S) batteries are associated with the radical change in lithium polysulfide (LPS) solubility during cycling, but chemical approaches to address such inconsistency are still lacking. Here, the use of a strong Lewis acidic fluorinated organoboron, tri(2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl) borate (TFEB), is reported as a multi‐functional mediator to simultaneously overcome multiple technical barriers in practical Li–S batteries. TFEB acts as an anion acceptor and forms strong molecular complexes with Lewis basic LPS. The TFEB‐LPS complexes have consistent solubility across the full polysulfide spectrum and deliver several times improved better redox kinetics, unlocking a true redox catalytic mechanism that covers the majority of redox events in thick sulfur cathodes. As a result, Li–S batteries evaluated under practical conditions exhibit significantly improved discharge capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability with the addition of the TFEB additive. More importantly, TFEB also contributes to the stabilization of lithium anode in the presence of polysulfides by generating strong interfacial film. These attributes significantly improve the cycling stability of practical Li–S pouch cells, which are assembled with a unit energy density of 219 Wh kg−1. The results provide new molecular insights on the design of unlocking solvation networks of practical Li–S systems.

Abstract:Concentrated lithium salt-monoglyme complex was used as an electrolyte candidate of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. It is found that the limited content of monoglyme suppresses the solubility and shuttle of polysulfides in the electrolyte. Then 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl ether (TFTFE) was selected as a second solvent of the complex, and the effect of adding TFTFE on electrolyte properties and cell performances was investigated. The results indicate that the fluorinated ether further reduces the dissolution of polysulfides and improves the specific capacity and cycle stability of the cells. Certain polarization appears in the discharge stage if using excess TFTFE, but it is nearly harmless to the operation of the cell at higher rates. The combination of concentrated complex and fluorinated ether in the electrolyte is an effective approach to achieve excellent performance for Li-S batteries.

Abstract:The advancement of liquid electrolytes in Li-metal batteries is an important strategy to realize a robust and uniform solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the Li metal anode while simultaneously achieving high oxidative stability and addressing the shortcomings of traditional carbonate and ether-based electrolytes suffering from side reactions and high-voltage decomposition, respectively. To circumvent these challenges, here, a fluorinated dioxolane-based cyclic co-solvent, that is 2-(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy)-4-(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dioxolane (TTD), is developed. After pairing 1.5 M lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) with TTD and 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME), the 1.5 M LiFSI-8TTD-2DME electrolyte exhibits remarkable oxidation stability up to 6 V and a Coulombic efficiency of 99.4% over 210 cycles at 3 mA cm–2 with a cut-off capacity of 3 mA h cm–2 in the Li|Cu half-cell originating from efficient regulation of the electrolyte solvation structure and consequent anion-derived inorganic SEI layer formation. Full cells with advanced electrolytes, using 20 μm of Li foil paired with the NCM811 cathode by a negative and positive capacity ratio (N/P) of 2.5, achieve 75% capacity retention after 160 cycles at 0.5 C. Furthermore, even at an ultra-high charge cut-off voltage of 4.7 V, the Li|NCM811 full cell still realizes 80% retention at 0.5 C after 100 cycles.

Abstract:Practical lithium-sulfur batteries stipulate the use of a lean-electrolyte and a high Coulombic efficiency of the lithium metal anode. Herein, we employ 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl ether as a co-solvent in the electrolyte of Li-S batteries to meet the demands. The co-solvent fosters the formation of a LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase on lithium metal anode, as revealed by Ab initio molecular dynamics and Femtosecond Stimulated Raman spectroscopy. The co-solvent results in an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.4% for lithium plating/stripping cycles. Full cells with a capacity ratio of 2 between lithium anode and the S@PAN cathode (3 mg(s) cm(-2)) exhibited a stable cycle life over 100 cycles at an electrolyte/sulfur ratio of 2 mu L mg(-1), validating the high Coulombic efficiency of the lithium anode and demonstrating the compatibility of the electrolyte with both electrodes. To enhance the energy density, we prepared a hybrid cathode composed of 45 wt.% VS2 mixed with ZnS-coated Li2S@graphene as the cathode. Based on the mass of both electrodes and the electrolyte, the full cell delivers an energy density of 483 Wh kg(-1), which demonstrates viable Li-S batteries with the lean electrolyte.
Suppressing the Dissolution of Polysulfides with Cosolvent Fluorinated Diether Towards High-Performance Lithium Sulfur Batteries.

Abstract:The dissolution and shuttle of polysulfides in electrolytes cause severe anode corrosion, low coulombic efficiency, and a rapid fading of the capacity of lithium-sulfur batteries. Fluorinated diether (FDE) was selected as a cosolvent in traditional ether electrolytes to suppress the dissolution of polysulfides. The modified electrolytes lead to a negligible solubility of polysulfides, as well as decreased corrosion of the lithium anode. In an optimal system, the cells show improved cycling performance with an average coulombic efficiency of above 99% and a highly stable reversible discharge capacity of 701 mA h g-1 after 200 cycles at a 0.5C rate. A combination of electrochemical studies and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrates the sulfur reduction mechanism with three voltage plateaus.

Abstract:To address the challenges associated with applying high-voltage cathodes in lithium metal batteries (LMBs) there is a need for new electrolytes enabling stable interphases at both electrodes. Here we attack this by using a dioxolane-derived cyclic fluorinated ether, 2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dioxolane (BTFD), as a fluorinated diluent to a 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) based electrolyte. The cells using the resulting BTFD-based electrolytes exhibit higher Coulombic efficiencies for lithium stripping and plating as compared to those using the non-fluorinated ether-based electrolyte. This originates from the reduced formation of 'dead Li' at the anode, as shown by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). In practice, the BTFD-based electrolytes are shown to improve the performance of Li||NMC cells, which is due to the formation of a predominantly inorganic cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) that suppresses the cathode degradation during cycling. We used X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) to characterize the CEIs' overall composition and structure. To obtain more details on the CEI speciation, Raman and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies were employed, assisted by molecular level computations. Overall, we demonstrate how the very design of the electrolyte composition influences the performance of LMBs.

Abstract:Abstract Fluorination of ether solvents is an effective strategy to improve the electrochemical stability of non-aqueous electrolyte solutions in lithium metal batteries. However, excessive fluorination detrimentally impacts the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte, thus limiting the battery performance. Here, to maximize the electrolyte ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability, we introduce the targeted trifluoromethylation of 1,2-dimethoxyethane to produce 1,1,1-trifluoro-2,3-dimethoxypropane (TFDMP). TFDMP is used as a solvent to prepare a 2 M non-aqueous electrolyte solution comprising bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide salt. This electrolyte solution shows an ionic conductivity of 7.4 mS cm –1 at 25 °C, an oxidation stability up to 4.8 V and an efficient suppression of Al corrosion. When tested in a coin cell configuration at 25 °C using a 20 μm Li metal negative electrode, a high mass loading LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 -based positive electrode (20 mg cm –2 ) with a negative/positive (N/P) capacity ratio of 1, discharge capacity retentions (calculated excluding the initial formation cycles) of 81% after 200 cycles at 0.1 A g –1 and 88% after 142 cycles at 0.2 A g –1 are achieved.

A Micelle Electrolyte Enabled by Fluorinated Ether Additives for Polysulfide Suppression and Li Metal Stabilization in Li-S Battery

Abstract:The Li-S battery is a promising next-generation technology due to its high theoretical energy density (2600 Wh kg-1) and low active material cost. However, poor cycling stability and coulombic efficiency caused by polysulfide dissolution have proven to be major obstacles for a practical Li-S battery implementation. In this work, we develop a novel strategy to suppress polysulfide dissolution using hydrofluoroethers (HFEs) with bi-functional, amphiphlic surfactant-like design: a polar lithiophilic "head" attached to a fluorinated lithiophobic "tail." A unique solvation mechanism is proposed for these solvents whereby dissociated lithium ions are readily coordinated with lithiophilic "head" to induce self-assembly into micelle-like complex structures. Complex formation is verified experimentally by changing the additive structure and concentration using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). These HFE-based electrolytes are found to prevent polysulfide dissolution and to have excellent chemical compatibility with lithium metal: Li||Cu stripping/plating tests reveal high coulombic efficiency (>99.5%), modest polarization, and smooth surface morphology of the uniformly deposited lithium. Li-S cells are demonstrated with 1395 mAh g-1 initial capacity and 71.9% retention over 100 cycles at >99.5% efficiency-evidence that the micelle structure of the amphiphilic additives in HFEs can prohibit polysulfide dissolution while enabling facile Li+ transport and anode passivation.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries with sulfur cathode and lithium anode are considered as a promising candidate in the next generation of high specific energy secondary batteries. However, the scalable application of Li-S batteries is limited by the unstable electrode/electrolyte interfaces. Herein, a novel bifunctional electrolyte additive, trifluoromethane sulfonamide (TFMSA), is introduced to stabilize both electrode/electrolyte interfaces to enhance the electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries. The TFMSA molecule can not only alleviate the passivation of the sulfur cathode surface, but also suppress Li dendrites growth and prevent the lithium anode from the corrosion of polysulfides. As a result, the assembled Li-S battery with TFMSA-containing electrolyte displays excellent long-cycle performance and rate capability. Moreover, the Li||Li symmetric cell using TFMSA electrolyte can stably cycle for 1200 h at 1 mA cm−2 and 1 mAh cm−2. The Li-S pouch cell with TFMSA also exhibits outstanding performance, indicating the prospect of practical application. This work sheds light on an innovative idea for interface modification via an electrolyte additive to overcome the inherent issues of Li-S batteries.

Abstract:The mass fraction of electrolytes is the crucial factor affecting the energy density of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Due to the high porosity within the C/S cathode, high concentration of polysulfides, and side reaction in lithiun metal anode under lean electrolyte, it is extremely challenging to improve performance while reducing the electrolyte volume. Here, we report a novel electrolyte with relatively low density (1.16 g cm−3), low viscosity (1.84 mPa s), and high ionic conductivity, which significantly promotes energy density and cyclability of Li-S batteries under practical conditions. Moreover, such electrolyte enables a hybrid cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer with plentiful LiF, which leads to fast kinetics of ions transport and stable cyclability even under low temperatures. Compared to Li-S batteries in electrolyte employing 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE) diluent, the ultra-thick cathode (20 mg cm−2) shows a high capacity of 9.48 mAh cm−2 and excellent capacity retention of 80.3% over 191 cycles at a low electrolyte-to-sulfur ratio (E/S = 2) and negative-to-positive capacity ratio (N/P = 2.5), realizing a 19.2% improvement in energy density in coin cells (from 370 to 441 Wh kg−1) and a high energy density up to 467 Wh kg−1 in pouch cells. This study not only provides guidance for the electrolyte design but also paves the way for the development of high performance Li-S batteries under practical conditions.

Abstract:Rechargeable Li–S batteries are regarded as one of the most promising next‐generation energy‐storage systems. However, the inevitable formation of Li dendrites and the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides significantly weakens electrochemical performance, preventing its practical application. Herein, a new class of localized high‐concentration electrolyte (LHCE) enabled by adding inert fluoroalkyl ether of 1H,1H,5H‐octafluoropentyl‐1,1,2,2‐tetrafluoroethyl ether into highly‐concentrated electrolytes (HCE) lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl) imide/dimethoxyether (DME) system is reported to suppress Li dendrite formation and minimize the solubility of the high‐order polysulfides in electrolytes, thus reducing the amount of electrolyte in cells. Such a unique LHCE can achieve a high coulombic efficiency of Li plating/stripping up to 99.3% and completely suppressing the shuttling effect, thus maintaining a S cathode capacity of 775 mAh g−1 for 150 cycles with a lean electrolyte of 4.56 g A−1 h−1. The LHCE reduces the solubility of lithium polysulfides, allowing the Li/S cell to achieve super performance in a lean electrolyte. This conception of using inert diluents in a highly concentrated electrolyte can accelerate commercialization of Li–S battery technology.

Abstract:Polysulfide shuttle effects, active material losses, formation of resistive surface layers, and continuous electrolyte consumption create a major barrier for the lightweight and low-cost lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery adoption. Tuning electrolyte composition by using additives and most importantly by substantially increasing electrolyte molarity was previously shown to be one of the most effective strategies. Contrarily, little attention has been paid to dilute and super-diluted LiTFSI/DME/DOL/LiNO3 based-electrolytes, which have been thought to aggravate the polysulfide dissolution and shuttle effects. Here we challenge this conventional wisdom and demonstrate outstanding capabilities of a dilute (0.1 mol L-1 of LiTFSI in DME/DOL with 1 wt. % LiNO3) electrolyte to enable better electrode wetting, greatly improved high-rate capability, and stable cycle performance for high sulfur loading cathodes and low electrolyte/sulfur ratio in Li-S cells. Overall, the presented study shines light on the extraordinary ability of such electrolyte systems to suppress short-chain polysulfide dissolution and polysulfide shuttle effects.
Impact of Fluorination Degree of Ether-Based Electrolyte Solvent on Li-metal Battery Performance

Abstract:Electrolytes using fluorinated solvents have proven effective in improving the cycling life of Li-metal batteries, by forming a robust solid-electrolyte interphase through decomposition of anion and fluorinated solvent molecules. Herein, we modulated the fluorination degree of ether-based electrolyte solvents to investigate their performance in Li-metal batteries. We tuned the fluorination degree by installing a monofluorine substituent on one ethoxy group of 1,2-diethoxyethane (DEE) and varying the fluorination degree on the other one, providing three fluorinated DEE solvent molecules (i.e., F1F0, F1F1 and F1F2) with a relatively low fluorination degree. All the three electrolytes showed improved solvation strength and ionic conductivities compared with previous highly fluorinated DEE electrolytes, while retaining good oxidative stability. Full cell test using Li-metal anode and nickel-rich cathode revealed that a higher degree of fluorination is beneficial to the cycling performance, and the cycling stability follows F1F0 < F1F1 < F1F2. Specifically, F1F0 exhibited poor cycling stability due to its instability against both anode and cathode. While F1F1 and F1F2 both showed good stability against Li-metal anode, their relative long-term oxidative stability was responsive for the distinct performance, in which the cycle numbers at 80% capacity retention for F1F1 and F1F2 were ~20 and ~80, respectively. Finally, we demonstrated that F1F2 was able to achieve 90 cycles before reaching 80% capacity retention in practice lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pouch cells. Flame-retardant concentrated electrolyte enabling a LiF-rich solid electrolyte interface to improve cycle performance of wide-temperature lithium–sulfur batteries

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries have been regarded as the most promising high-energy electrochemical energy storage device owing to the high energy density, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, traditional lithium-sulfur batteries using ether-based electrolytes often suffer from severe safety risks (i.e. combustion). Herein, we demonstrated a novel kind of flame-retardant concentrated electrolyte (6.5 M lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulphonyl)imide/fluoroethylene carbonate) for highly-safe and wide-temperature lithium-sulfur batteries. It was found that such concentrated electrolyte showed superior flame retardancy, high lithium-ion transference number (0.69) and steady lithium plating/stripping behavior (2.5 mAh cm−2 over 3000 h). Moreover, lithium-sulfur batteries using this flame-retardant concentrated electrolyte delivered outstanding cycle performance in a wide range of temperatures (−10 °C, 25 °C and 90 °C). This superior battery performance is mainly attributed to the LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase formed on lithium metal anode, which can effectively suppress the continuous growth of lithium dendrites. Above-mentioned fascinating characteristics would endow this flame-retardant concentrated electrolyte a very promising candidate for highly-safe and wide-temperature lithium-sulfur batteries.

Abstract:Li-S battery concept is promising for the next generation energy storage due to its distinct advantage of high theoretical capacity (1675 mA/g) and energy density (2600 Wh/gm). Yet the formation of polysulfides as intermediate discharge products (Li 2 S n , 4<n<8) and their dissolution result in the loss of active material and ultimate deposition at the anode. This shuttle phenomenon gives rise to irreversible loss of active material, rapid capacity fading, low coulombic efficiency and short cycle life with an ambiguity of its mechanism. To our best knowledge, we will be the first to employ the in-situ characterization techniques including Raman spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to investigate the kinetics evolution with various electrolyte systems. This work presented the formation change of polysulfides intermediates at various fluorinated additives environment with different formula and composition based on in-situ/operando Raman spectroscopy. The Raman results clearly revealed the long-chain polysulfide conversion (400 cm -1 ) was pushed forward and an increasing concentration of short-chain polysulfide (453 cm -1 ) was appeared when fluorinated carboxylate ester-based electrolyte was used at its optimized formula compared to the baseline. Cyclic voltammetry results correspond to the chemistry evolution proposed by Raman. In-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy was also conducted on sulfur K-edge to monitor the polysulfide intermediates formation. X-ray fluorescence mapping (XRF) on cathode and anode also confirmed that the sulfur shuttle phenomenon was significantly suppressed in fluorinated carboxylate ester-based electrolyte by changing the sluggish kinetics. Abstract:This paper presents a robust control scheme for the tracking control of singularly perturbed uncertain systems. The design problem is divided into two parts: tracking the reference trajectory and enhancing the robustness of the dynamic systems. By using the time-scale techniques, dynamic inversion approach and linear parameter-varying methods, a set of singularly perturbed state feedback controllers are employed to enhance the tracking performance and robustness of a dynamic system against parameter uncertainties, actuator and sensor unmodelled dynamics, and external disturbances. The longitudinal control of an F16 aircraft model is included to show the merits and and effectiveness of the proposed design scheme.

Abstract:Developing electrolytes with a higher oxidation potential is essential to the performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Fluorine-containing solvent (1, 1, 2, 2-tetrafluoroethyl-2, 2, 3, 3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE)) is a promising candidate for high-voltage use; however, its weak interaction with lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) containing electrolyte results in phase separation and causes concerns in practical applications. In this work, ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) is selected to resolve the phase separation. The solvation structure, oxidation stability, and transport property of 1 M LiPF6 in fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC)/TTE and FEC/TTE/EMC (3:7 and 3:5:2 by vol., respectively) are investigated. The solvation energy of TTE in LiPF6 can be greatly increased by the inclusion of EMC and achieve improved thermodynamic stability. Upon adding EMC, the solvation structure is altered from Li+(FEC)2(PF6−) to Li+(FEC)(EMC)(PF6−) and confirmed by the Raman spectroscopy result. The transference number of Li+ in the improved electrolyte also evidently increases, as confirmed both theoretically and experimentally. Besides, 1 M LiPF6 in EFC/TTE/EMC (3:5: 2 by vol.) exhibits high oxidation potential ~ 5.31 V (vs. Li/Li+) and significantly enhances the transference number of Li+. This work offers a fluorine-containing electrolyte with a stable phase and high oxidation potential for LIB's practical application.
