Abstract:In this research article, we examine why so few of the most promising young scientists in South Africa, those who obtain a P or 'prestigious' rating from the South African National Research Foundation, go on to obtain an A rating, i.e. become leading international scholars in their fields. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 36 P-rated scientists in the period 1983 to 2022, we found that personal characteristics (such as work ethic), the right international networks, and strong departmental support are among the key factors that explain the research accomplishments of highly successful achievers. SIGNIFICANCE: The research is significant for two reasons. It explains why so few promising young scientists in South Africa become world leaders in their respective fields and, in particular, why even fewer young black scientists achieve the highest ratings in their disciplines.

Abstract:Qualitative Inquiry, Ahead of Print. As a Black woman recovering engineer, I shine a light on the damaging effects of racial stereotypes in academia, notably on Black women scholars. The unchecked emphasis on relentless pursuit of traditional academic excellence often results in profound negative consequences. Drawing from personal experiences and illuminating case studies of high-achieving Black women who met tragic ends prematurely, I underscore the pervasive systemic educational disparities, with a specific lens on STEM fields. My work pushes for an overhaul of the system, aimed at creating nurturing spaces where marginalized communities can thrive with dignity and respect. We need to shift the burden of battling systemic racism endured by Black women scholars. It's time we transition from an unhealthy emphasis on relentless individual resilience to a systemic reorientation that prioritizes fostering inclusive academic environments. An intentional recognition and confrontation of overlapping identities is the key to cultivating intersectionality and eradicating gendered racism in education. This vital transformation holds the promise of creating an academia that truly values and benefits from Black women academics.

Abstract:Underrepresentation of women in scientific leadership is a global problem. To understand and counter narratives that limit gender equity in African science, we conducted a public engagement campaign. Scientists representing six sub-Saharan African countries and multiple career stages used superhero imagery to create a diverse and unified team advocating for gender equity in science. In contrast to many traditional scientific environments and global campaigns, this "PowerPack of SuperScientists" was led by early-career Black female scientists whose perspectives are often under-represented in discussions about gender equity in science. The superhero imagery served as a powerful and fun antidote to imposter syndrome and helped to subvert traditional power structures based on age, race and sex. In an interactive social media campaign, the PowerPack developed insights into three themes: a) cultural stereotypes that limit women's scientific careers, b) the perception of a "conflict" between family and career responsibilities for women scientists, and c) solutions that can be adopted by key stakeholders to promote gender equity in African science. The PowerPack proposed solutions that could be undertaken by women working individually or collectively and interventions that require allyship from men, commitment from scientific institutions, and wider societal change. Further work is required to fully engage African scientists from even more diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds and institutions in these solutions and to enhance commitment by different stakeholders to achieving gender equity in science. Our experience suggests that creative tools should be used to subvert power dynamics and bring fresh perspectives and urgency to this topic.

Abstract:This longitudinal case study utilizes critical race theory methodology to chronicle the journey of an African American female in science teacher education. The study looks at her educational history first as a young child and then how she navigates a contested, racialized predominantly White teacher education program, grows and develops in science education, and secures her first full-time teaching appointment as an elementary teacher. The implications for practice in both teacher education and science education show that educational and emotional support for teachers of color throughout their educational and professional journey is imperative to increasing and sustaining Black teachers. In addition, intersectionality foregrounds and adds to the complexity of understanding race, racism, and science in teacher education.

Abstract:In this personal perspective, we reflect on our personal journey, highlighting the significance that role models and mentoring played in them, and explore how they benefit early-career researchers, promote academic success, and contribute to the overall growth of the academic community. We – the co-authors of this article (Prof. Tatjana Parac-Vogt and Dr. Ann van der Jeugd) – share some special connections: we were both presidents of Belgium Women in Science (BeWiSe), a non-profit association that promotes the role and position of women in science in Belgium (Tatjana from 2012 to 2016; Ann from 2020 to 2024), and we have a thriving mentor/mentee relationship, which started in 2015 through the BeWiSe mentoring programme.

Abstract:The prevalence and pervasive nature of emerging chemicals of concern have created widespread environmental injustice apprehensions in vulnerable communities. To alleviate and address these concerns, identifying, engaging, and training a diverse environmental health research workforce will be critical and necessary steps to combat and prevent the consequences of environmental injustice. While there is an obvious need to enhance diversity in environmental health research, this process is hampered by facets of systemic racism that reduce access to educational resources needed to build interest and knowledge in students and teachers. We present here a historical perspective to offer a guide for building programs and relationships with underserved schools to help overcome limiting factors that have plagued certain public school systems. With the proper training and mentorship, the untapped workforce present within these schools will be empowered to understand and address current and emerging environmental health and safety threats. Through this transformative 8-week high school research program, we will develop well-prepared, ethical researchers committed to scientific inquiry, intensive fieldwork, and collaborative problem solving to address environmental health challenges. Following the four-step risk assessment process, students, teachers, and faculty mentors will work collaboratively to identify toxicants, potential hazards and risks, and environmental disparities in urban neighborhoods, which provides the necessary training to formulate critical thinking skills for use in academic or nonacademic careers.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The Engaging Multidisciplinary Professional Opportunities for Women in Environmental Research (EMPOWER) program is a one-of-a-kind research summer experience for minority female high school students in the state of Georgia. In addition, this program provides high school teachers with hands-on experiences that can be adapted to use in the classrooms. This combination of lab and field research immerses participants in understanding urban environmental exposures and their health effects. The EMPOWER program was established to meet the critical need for increasing diversity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Abstract:The purpose of the school described in this paper was to outline a new national curriculum for a new and free Namibia, and the particular project in question illustrates the question of power over the curriculum, as exercised by representatives of (sometimes) conflicting values, in a lived cultural and curricular setting. An important point in this discussion is the evolution of competing ‘codes’ for the content of the curriculum, each connected with one of the ethnic groups that make up the team of teachers. The suggested codes are the ‘instrumental‐centralist’, the ‘contextual‐centralist’, and the ‘contextual‐populist’ code appearing in the complex micro‐society of the school. The aim of this article is to capture this complexity by describing it as a form of neo‐colonialism in the name of solidarity, taking the shape of a political alliance between SWAPO and external donor agencies. The wider context is to demonstrate how the shaping of the future curriculum of an entire nation is a kind of micropolitics, influenced by global, ethnic, and interpersonal factors. This ethnographic account tries to recognise the functionally linked, interactive and mutually conditioning nature of coloniser‐colonised relationships.

Is it transformation or reform? The lived experiences of African women doctoral students in STEM disciplines in South African universities

Abstract:Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields have historically been disciplines dominated by white men. The colonial ideology designated Africans as subhuman, inferior intellectually, socially, and culturally to the white masculine norm in STEM disciplines. STEM education and careers were thus constructed to attract white, heterosexual, middle-to-upper class, Christian, able-bodied men. This positioning ensured that STEM environments remained inhospitable to anyone whose identity was outside the constructed somatic norm. The calls and imperatives to transform notwithstanding, the transformation process in STEM disciplines is moving at a snail-like pace. This article argues that what is occurring in STEM disciplines in South African universities is reform not transformation. It is underpinned by the intersectional theory within the qualitative paradigm. Seventy-three African doctoral and postdoctoral women students in STEM were interviewed from five South African universities. The findings highlighted how African women in STEM face challenges based on their racial and gendered identities and that what is presented as transformation is still oppressive to them. The study also found that equity through access to education in democratic South Africa does not equate to transformation. The argument presented is that despite existing policies and initiatives in South African universities to transform, the demographic inclusion of African, female staff and students does not necessarily equate to transforming the STEM environment. What needs to occur is a shift beyond reform and towards transformation through the use of strategic inventions which dismantle the racist, sexist, classist, and xenophobic ideology that permeates these environments.

Abstract:Despite acknowledging issues of inequity within science education, practices, standards, and reform-guiding documents like the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) still fall short in actions that result in substantive and sustained progress in achieving their expressed goals and expectations. Issues of inequity in science education have been and are continuously documented for certain populations, Black students are of particular interest in this study. Using student responses to a survey to elicit the students' nominations of teachers to receive a fictitious "Best Science Teacher Award" and reasons for their selections, we explored what captured Black high school students' attention within their science educational experiences over time (N = 261). Deductive and inductive coding resulted in a category system which was synthesized into three dimensions: affect, praxis, and personal traits. These dimensions encapsulated what students deemed most important in supporting their nominations for the best science teacher award. Collectively, these dimensions suggested that emotion and pedagogy captured Black students' attention. Additionally, the category system was used to derive student profiles which reflected the various reasons posited in a student's rationale. Chi-square analyses of student profiles showed significant associations at p < .05 between student profiles and level taught by the nominated teacher (Cramer's V of 0.783) and student profiles and survey respondent's grade level (Cramer's V of 0.480). Implications for studying attention as it relates to learning and the importance of incorporating student perceptions and experiences into policy, reform, and implementation efforts that ensue from each are discussed.

Abstract:With this article, we describe and analyze the experience of a scientist as she delineated the meaning of scientific inquiry and developed a new professional identity as a science teacher educator. Our inquiry adopted a self-study methodology with a variety of data sources, including sixteen-weeks of journal entries, critical friends’ meetings and reflections, video and audio-taped lessons and students’ artifacts. The self-study process captured her conflict between scientific inquiry in the classroom and her chemistry research. We captured three stages of her understanding of scientific inquiry. The idea of “authentic scientific novice research” finally resolved her conflicts. This study also revealed three factors that influenced the formation of her professional identity (i.e., competing identities, contextual influences, and personal struggles). This finding and resulting conclusions not only report the evolution of personal understanding, but also bring out the discussion of teacher educator development, especially for those transitioning to science education from natural sciences.

Abstract:Chemical innovations enhance our quality of life by responding to challenges in e.g., energy production, medical care, and material development. Studying and understanding chemistry is essential for future solutions. However, chemistry is not accessible to all learners. In South Africa, the challenge is to make chemistry accessible to all participants, especially in the North West province, in poor schools without easy access to resources and with inadequately trained teachers. One way to make chemistry more accessible is through micro-scale chemistry. With this goal in mind, the MYLAB small-scale chemistry kit was designed. The kit was developed around the 5 ml test tube (our size determinant). We wanted all learners and teachers to have hands-on, minds-on chemistry practical experience. Thus, workshops were organised to (i) train the teachers in the use of the kits and (ii) to allow learners to experience practicals hands-on. This article gives an overview of how the use of the MYLAB small-scale chemistry kit was successful in making chemistry accessible to all.

Abstract:The success of environmental education has been attributed to several factors including teachers’ competencies and attitudes, teaching methodologies, availability of resources, and curriculum design. Many researchers in environmental education suggest that innovative and resourceful teaching approaches may translate into meaningful environmental education. This study provides an insight into the influence of this on environmental education in a South African classroom through a qualitative approach. Interviews were conducted to understand the teaching approaches used in the subject of Life Skills. The findings of the study suggest that the pedagogical content knowledge and identity of the teacher are determining factors for teachers’ pedagogical choices. This paper suggests that it is not the resources that are crucial to learning, rather the presence of a resourceful teacher. A resourceful teacher is able to introduce innovation regardless of the availability of teaching resources. This information could inform pre-service teacher training programmesin focusing on the development of a resourceful environmental education teacher.
