Abstract:A major focus in the STEM public engagement sector concerns engaging with young people, typically through schools. The aims of these interventions are often to positively affect students' aspirations towards continuing STEM education and ultimately into STEM-related careers. Most schools engagement activities take the form of short one-off interventions that, while able to achieve positive outcomes, are limited in the extent to which they can have lasting impacts on aspirations. In this paper we discuss various different emerging programmes of repeated interventions with young people, assessing what impacts can realistically be expected. Short series of interventions appear also to suffer some limitations in the types of impacts achievable. However, deeper programmes that interact with both young people and those that influence them over significant periods of time (months to years) seem to be more effective in influencing aspirations. We discuss how developing a Theory of Change and considering young people's wider learning ecologies are required in enabling lasting impacts in a range of areas. Finally, we raise several sector-wide challenges to implementing and evaluating these emerging approaches.

Abstract:This article reflects on the author's career journey, from beginnings in southern Chile to leading a research lab. It emphasizes the importance of relatable role models, resilience and leveraging personal strengths to navigate challenges. The piece offers advice for young scientists and draws parallels between managing a lab and coaching a soccer team. Role models play a crucial role in inspiring and guiding careers in science, offering tangible examples of success and resilience. Reflecting on my journey from a small town in southern Chile to leading a lab at Karolinska Institutet, I've learned that relatable role models are particularly impactful for overcoming imposter syndrome and fostering a sense of belonging in academia. Early in my career, I drew inspiration from peers and mentors, gradually building my confidence and embracing my strengths. Later, exposure to interdisciplinary role models expanded my horizons and shaped my approach to science. Now, as a PI, I see my role as both a coach and mentor, fostering a team dynamic that amplifies individual strengths. Success in science often stems from fearlessness, adaptability and a willingness to seize opportunities, even when the outcome is uncertain. My journey demonstrates that good scientists can come from anywhere, including a small town in southern Chile.

Abstract:Creative, motivated, and high-achieving students are found in every college and university, but not all of these students participate in honors programs which might support their talent development. This comparative case study investigated the perceptions of 10 participants who completed university-level “Type III experiences.” It extends the sparse research on enrichment and gifted education pedagogy in undergraduate students, framed on Renzulli’s Four-Part Theoretical Model for Gifted Education in the 21st Century. Interviews explored students’ perceptions of the experience and effects on their executive functions and future plans. Using Strauss and Corbin’s technique of open, axial, and selective coding, one overarching theme of this study emerged: support provided for creative productivity led to autonomy and enabled students to complete advanced and creative projects.

Abstract:Despite the critical role of creativity in advancing science and technology, our understanding of the funding schemes that drive creativity remains remarkably limited. Concerns have arisen that grants supporting predetermined projects may unintentionally encourage incremental research, prompting governments to explore different funding approaches. For instance, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) initiated the Excellent Young Scientists Fund (EYS), a prestigious talent funding program designed to support junior scientists. Given that radical innovation is a key concern for contemporary China, we empirically estimate the impact of the EYS program on scientific productivity, citation impact, and the generation of radical research. Utilizing a unique dataset, we find that the EYS program enhances both the productivity and citation impact of early-career Chinese scientists. Strikingly, we observe that EYS investigators tend to consolidate current science, resulting in a reduction of disruption compared to their counterparts. We propose several theories to explain this reduced level of disruption, with a particular focus on research strategies. Our investigations suggest that exploitation strategies and a focus on publishing hot-topic papers contribute to this observed effect. These findings provide valuable insights into the impact of funding and hold important policy implications for supporting disruptive research endeavors.

Abstract:Learning and creation are the two mutually reinforcing aspects in the cultivation of top-notch innovative talents. The capability to innovate and create is one of the key factors for the evaluation of top-notch talents. Zhiyuan College of Shanghai Jiao Tong University has implemented the Zhiyuan Future Scholar Program since 2016. This program guides undergraduates to challenge cutting-edge and interdisciplinary research projects, targeting at the frontiers of science and technology or major national strategic needs. The roles of undergraduate research programs in top universities in China and some developed countries have been summarized. The analysis of the survey on the Zhiyuan Future Scholar Program and the summary of interviews with the students who participated in the program shows that this program has played positive roles in training undergraduates to develop critical thinking ability, teamwork ability, scientific research practice ability, innovation awareness. In addition, suggestions on how to improve the quality of undergraduate research programs have been proposed, which would provide new ideas for the cultivation of top-notch innovative talents in China.

Abstract:Top faculty talent recruitment, mentoring, productivity, and retention are paramount for organizational success among institutions of higher learning. Programs would do well to treat these various aspects of faculty management/development as inextricably linked to one another, rather than viewing recruitment or retention in a vacuum. The Strategic Academic Recruitment (StAR) program at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Dublin was founded to bear these things, along with best practices in faculty development, in mind to enhance organizational effectiveness. This paper provides some background, description, and outcomes of the program thus far, revealing positive trends in scholarly productivity, teaching, program faculty commitment, and the development of future leaders for the institution, even while further evaluation and continued quality improvement for the StAR initiative are called for. It is hoped that the details provided here can be helpful for other academic organizations as they consider any of various initiatives aimed to attract high-quality labor capital, position those faculty for success, and enhance organizational effectiveness and reputation.

Abstract:Nature Communications has been striving to support Early Career Researchers (ECRs) through different pilot schemes including the peer review mentoring programs and co-review mentoring initiative . The 2nd Rising Stars workshop, held at the Henry Royce Institute on the 9th of February, 2024, aims to celebrate and support rising stars within underrepresented groups in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects and this greatly aligns with the aspirations in our journal. Abstract:In science, mentees often follow their mentors' career paths, but exceptional mentees frequently break from this routine, sometimes even outperforming their mentors. However, the pathways to independence for these excellent mentees and their interactions with mentors remain unclear. We analyzed the careers of over 500,000 mentees in Chemistry, Neuroscience, and Physics over the past 60 years to examine the strategies mentees employ in selecting research topics relative to their mentors, how these strategies evolve, and their resulting impact. Utilizing co-citation network analysis and a topic-specific impact allocation algorithm, we mapped the topic territory for each mentor-mentee pair and quantified their academic impact accrued within the topic. Our findings reveal mentees tend to engage with their mentors' less-dominated topics and explore new topics at the same time, and through this exaptive process, they begin to progressively establish their own research territories. This trend is particularly pronounced among those who outperform their mentors. Moreover, we identified an inverted U-shaped curve between the extent of topic divergence and the mentees' long-term impact, suggesting a moderate divergence from the mentors' research focus optimizes the mentees' academic impact. Finally, along the path to independence, increased coauthorship with mentors impedes the mentees' impact, whereas extending their collaboration networks with the mentors' former collaborators proves beneficial. These findings fill a crucial gap in understanding how mentees' research topic selection strategies affect academic success and offer valuable guidance for early-career researchers on pursuing independent research paths.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this study was to make sense of the individual perspectives of former undergraduate student mentors from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields who took part in an after-school STEM mentoring program. The study examined the following research questions: (1) How do former undergraduate student STEM mentors interpret and give meaning to their after-school STEM mentoring experiences? (2) In what way can an after-school STEM mentoring experience lead to a deeper understanding of the long-term implications of a STEM mentorship program? Design/methodology/approach The sample comprised 21 former undergraduate STEM mentors. The study was guided by the methods of content analysis and repertory grid (RepGrid), with data collected via highly structured interviews. Eight elements were pre-selected for the RepGrid to elicit constructs from participants. These include (1) mentoring, (2) teaching, (3) research, (4) career, (5) workforce, (6) Nebraska STEM for you (NE STEM 4U), (7) networking, and (8) communication. The researcher employed content analysis for cross-case analysis and used interpretative clustering to analyze nuanced similarities and differences among participants. Personal construct theory was used to understand how former STEM mentors made sense of their experiences. Findings The results highlight the diversity of viewpoints among participants, as well as their connections to various career paths, communication strategies, and mentorship styles. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of how STEM mentorship experiences can be tailored to the experiences of mentees. The study stresses the significance of clear communication in STEM and advises professionals to avoid excessive technical jargon to convey complex ideas. Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the motivations, perspectives, and benefits of former undergraduate mentors. Ultimately, recognizing how these factors impact STEM mentoring programs is vital for the long-term success and advancement of the STEM pipeline. Research limitations/implications The study has several limitations, including the inclusion of participants lacking knowledge or experience with the eight elements used in the RepGrids. While participants had completed a bachelor's degree in a STEM field, not all had pursued advanced schooling or careers that required knowledge or implementation of research. Practical implications Findings underscore the importance of acknowledging the diverse career paths within STEM fields to understand participants' perspectives toward mentorship. Considering the incorporation of STEM mentorship within regular school hours and making it a graduation prerequisite could enhance student participation and advancement. Integrating STEM outreach programs into higher education curricula could facilitate the development of essential professional skills (e.g. critical thinking, problem-solving) among STEM undergraduate students. These implications highlight the importance of diverse mentorship styles and professional skills to foster a more inclusive STEM workforce. Originality/value The study focused on the individual perspectives of participants rather than employing a thematic analysis.

Abstract:Prof. Lesley Rees belongs to the women who changed science and has inspired so many young researchers, including myself. These inspiring women deserve more credit and recognition than they get because they serve as a role model for us. Indeed, despite advances towards women empowerment, progress has been slow, and discrepancy persists around the world. Unfortunately, science is not immune to such inequalities, and the voices of female leaders are important in cracking this gender filter. Women represent only a third of researchers globally and often face gender-based discrimination and lack equal opportunities. In this letter, I would like to highlight three astonishing researchers in an effort to underscore the importance of existing women mentorship, while transmitting the pride of the red lipstick rather than the victimization of the red cheeks.

Abstract:A strong feature of the widening participation agenda is improving the aspirations of groups that are underrepresented in higher education. This paper seeks to reposition the utility of this as a focal point of educational interventions by showcasing the success of a mentoring program that takes a different approach. The Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) significantly and positively impacts Australian Indigenous high school students’ aspirations to finish school and continue to further study, training or employment. AIME is not read as a classic intervention program for raising aspirations. Instead, AIME builds upon the cultural wealth of participants and adopts an approach that seeks to inspire individuals rather than remediate them. The paper draws on survey data and fieldwork to present an example case study for resisting the assumption that young people’s aspirations are deficit and in need of ‘improving’. The paper describes how AIME works within young people’s ‘windows of aspiration’ to positively impact their engagement in school and further education, training and employment.

Abstract:The focus of this paper lies in the understanding of the experiences of five scholars from underrepresented groups in the Reinvigorating Engineering and Changing History (REACH) Program using a case study framework. Fieldnotes of the REACH scholars’ activities and meetings and one-on-one interviews with REACH scholars were the main data sources to understand scholars’ experiences in the REACH program. Their experiences include transitioning from undergraduate to graduate school, mentoring through and outside of the REACH program, and professional development trajectories. Findings from our case-by-case analyses offer a unique perspective on the challenges in their transitioning from undergraduate programs to graduate engineering programs, their mentoring experiences throughout the first year of graduate school and the different supports they received from REACH or other programs. The findings on the scholars’ experiences provide direct feedback for the REACH program and also inform our next steps in the evaluation effort. Moreover, implications from this study offer practical suggestions for the transitioning from undergraduate to graduate programs and the development of mentoring support for graduate students.
