Abstract:Layer-structured Zr doped Li[Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1−x/3Zrx/3]O2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.05) were synthesized via slurry spray drying method. The powders were characterized by XRD, SEM and galvanostatic charge/discharge tests. The products remained single-phase within the range of 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.03. The charge and discharge cycling of the cells showed that Zr doping enhanced cycle life compared to the bare one, while did not cause the reduction of the discharge capacity of Li[Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3]O2. The unchanged peak shape in the differential capacity versus voltage curve suggested that the Zr had the effect to stabilize the structure during cycling. More interestingly, the rate capability was greatly improved. The sample with x = 0.01 presented a capacity of 160.2 mAh g−1 at current density of 640 mA g−1(4 C), corresponding to 92.4% of its capacity at 32 mA g−1(0.2 C). The favorable performance of the doped sample could be attributed to its increased lattice parameter.

Abstract:Li x Co 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 2, as the cathode materials for lithium-ion battery, were prepared from the precursors, Co 0.8 Ni 0.2 (OH) 2, which were synthesized by the controlled crystallization technology. The experiments of energy diffraction spectroscopy showed that the elements of Co and Ni were distributed uniformly in the active materials. Because the elements of Co and Ni have been distributed uniformly in the M layer of M(OH) 2 during the controlled crystallization process, the long-term calcining process was avoided, when the recomposing process of diffusion happened in the common solid solutions. The microphotographs of SEM indicated the change of microcosmic morphology. The results of XRD proved that the Li x Co 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 2 were single phase with α-NaFeO 2 layered structure, and have no other phases. The crystal lattices of a and c underwent a process from small to big and then to small, and c/a underwent a process from big to small and then to big.

Abstract:Ni-rich Li[NixCoyMn1-x-y]O-2 (x >= 0.8) layered oxides are the most promising cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high reversible capacity of over 200 mAh g(-1). Unfortunately, the anisotropic properties associated with the alpha-NaFeO2 structured crystal grains result in poor rate capability and insufficient cycle life. To address these issues, a micrometer-sized Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 secondary cathode material consisting of radially aligned single-crystal primary particles is proposed and synthesized. Concomitant with this unique crystallographic texture, all the exposed surfaces are active {010} facets, and 3D Li+ ion diffusion channels penetrate straightforwardly from surface to center, remarkably improving the Li+ diffusion coefficient. Moreover, coordinated charge-discharge volume change upon cycling is achieved by the consistent crystal orientation, significantly alleviating the volume-change-induced intergrain stress. Accordingly, this material delivers superior reversible capacity (203.4 mAh g(-1) at 3.0-4.3 V) and rate capability (152.7 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 1000 mA g(-1)). Further, this structure demonstrates excellent cycling stability without any degradation after 300 cycles. The anisotropic morphology modulation provides a simple, efficient, and scalable way to boost the performance and applicability of Ni-rich layered oxide cathode materials.

Abstract:Single-crystal nickel (Ni)-rich cathode materials (Li[Ni[Formula: see text]Co[Formula: see text]Mn[Formula: see text]]O 2 , (NCMs)) of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) have displayed promising application potential due to the merits of stable structure, minor side reaction, and high energy density. The Ni[Formula: see text]Co[Formula: see text]Mn[Formula: see text](OH) 2 as the precursor of single-crystal NCM faces the issues of tedious preparation process and serious pollutant emission for traditional preparation methods during the industrial preparation. Herein, an improved continuous two-step spray pyrolysis strategy is adopted to prepare the precursor of single-crystal NCM. Combining with the industrial devices, ton-scale preparation of single-crystal NCM is realized after dynamic lithiation post-treatment. This improved strategy not only shortens the preparation process, but also reduces metal segregation and sintering temperature, effectively balancing the cost control and production efficiency. The samples sintering at 850[Formula: see text]C show uniform morphology with a diameter of 4.5 [Formula: see text] m and delivers an initial discharge capacity of 169 mAh/g at 0.1 C after 100 cycles. This work provides a new route for the industrial preparation single-crystal NCM cathode materials of LIBs.

Abstract:In order to investigate the influences of modification on industrial-grade cathode materials, layered Ti-doped Li(Ni0.5Co0.2Mn0.3)(1-x)TixO2 cathode materials have been synthesized via a simple solid state method using industrial raw materials in bulk scale ( > 10 kg) in this work. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) mapping, particle size distribution and electrochemical tests including cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) have been used to characterize electrochemical performance of industrial-grade cathode materials. The results of XRD, SEM and EDS mapping characterization indicate that all the modified cathode materials with their Ni, Co and Mn components doped by titanium keep a typical alpha-NaFeO2 layered structure with R-3m space group and titanium atoms are uniformly distributed in all series of Ti-doped materials as prepared. Electrochemical characterization confirms that the material of 0.2% Ti doping has the best cycling performance and the least capacity loss because of its best cation ordering figured by Rietveld refinement of XRD. The initial discharge capacity of 0.2% Ti doping material achieves 185.0 mA h/g at 1 C between 2.8 and 4.6 V. Abstract:Active cathode materials with ultra-high specific capacities, including nickel-rich substrates, are promising candidates for future high-energy density batteries. However, the poor stability of nickel-rich cathodes has limited the development of long-life batteries. Herein, the electrochemical properties of layered cathode materials were optimized by tuning the transition metal ratio (Co/Mn) in precursor preparation. The effects of transition metals Co and Mn on the specific capacities and cyclabilities of layered cathode materials were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Keeping Co and Mn equal allows extreme nickel cathode materials to have the best performance. The as-obtained LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2 cathode exhibited a high capacity of 221.0 mAh g−1, combined with excellent interfacial structure and thermal stability. The enhanced nickel ions mechanism of the active cathode materials by transition metal regulation was clarified. Overall, the proposed materials containing transition metals with improved capacity and cycling stability are promising for the development of future advanced batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-manganese-rich transition metal oxides have attracted substantial R&D attention due to their potential for high energy-density lithium-ion batteries. In this work, in situ high-energy X-ray diffraction was deployed to investigate the phase evolution during the solid-state synthesis of Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O-2. A step-wise consumption of the starting materials was observed during the one-step heating process primarily due to the heterogeneous nature of the precursor. According to observations from in situ high-energy X-ray diffraction, a two-step process was adopted to minimize the elemental heterogeneity of the final product. The electrochemical characterization results showed a substantial improvement on the reversible specific capacity for the material synthesized through the two-step process.

Abstract:LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 is considered as a promising Ni-rich layered cathode material of lithium-ion batteries due to low cost and high capacity. However, it is generally prepared by complicated precursor methods. In this work, LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 is synthesized by a solid-state method with manganese acetate as manganese source and an effective mixing way. The as-prepared samples are characterized by XRD, FESEM, XPS and electrochemical techniques. The results show that the synthesized LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 cathode materials have an α-NaFeO2 type structure with insignificant cation mixing, octahedral single crystal and quasi sphere morphology, smaller particle size and good dispersion, so that it displays an initial discharge capacity of 163.6 mAh g−1 with a coulombic efficiency of 85.6% at 0.1C, a capacity retention of 99.1% after 100 cycles at 0.5C and an excellent rate performance, and also an initial discharge capacity of 177.3 mAh g−1 with capacity retention of 94.6% after 155 cycles at 55 °C.

Abstract:An amorphous complex precursor with uniform Mn/Ni cation distribution is attempted for preparing a nano-structured layered Li-rich oxide (Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2)cathode material, using diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) as a chelating agent. The materials are characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electrochemical tests. The crystal structure of Li-rich materials is found to be closely related to synthesis temperature. As-obtained nano materials sintered at 850 °C for 10 h show an average size of 200 nm with a single crystal phase and good crystallinity. At a current density of 20 mA·g−1, the specific discharge capacity reaches 221 mAh·g−1 for the first cycle and the capacity retention is 81% over 50 cycles. Even at a current density of 1000 mA·g−1, the capacity is as high as 118 mAh·g−1. The enhanced rate capability can be ascribed to the nano-sized morphology and good crystal structure.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, as the most advanced energy storage devices currently available, urgently require the development of cathode materials with high capacity, large specific energy, and fast charge/discharge performance to satisfy the continuous technological innovation. Here, a Li-rich Mn-based ternary cathode material Li7/6Nil/6Co1/6Mn1/2O2 is designed, and the geometrical structure, electronic properties, and thermodynamic properties of this material are investigated employing first-principles method. Six layered structure models are established by adjusting the ratio of Ni, Co, and Mn elements, and the effects of various elements on material properties are evaluated. Based on the performance of Ni, Co, and Mn in the structure, Li1.2Ni0.15Co0.1Mn0.55O2 features favorbale electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and excellent stability. This material obtained through co-precipitation high temperature solid phase synthesis presents high actual capacity (245 mA·h/g) and superior cycling performance (capacity retention rate of the material is 84% after 60 cycles at 0.2 C). This effort discusses the Li-rich Mn-based cathode materials in terms of structural basis, reaction mechanism, and application exploration, which are valuable for guiding their theoretical design, optimization modification, and industrial application.

Abstract:One popular study of the recent research is to develop the cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. As a new cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, the LiNil/3Col/3Mnl/3O2 has drawn widespread attention because of its high capacity, high cut-off voltage and high tap density. Its theoretical capacity is 277.8 mAh/g. The crystal structure of LiNil/3Col/3Mnl/3O2 is α-NaFeO 2 . The structural and morphological features of the LiNil/3Col/3Mnl/3O2 are introduced in this paper. The emphasis is to present the methods for promoting electrochemical properties. The electrochemical properties and structure characteristics are discussed. And the prospect of layered LiNil/3Col/3Mnl/3O2 is forecast in the end.

Abstract:Li-rich layered Li1+xMnyM1-x-yO2 (or denoted xLi2MnO3·(1 -x)LiMO2, M = Ni, Co, Mn, etc.) are promising cathode materials for high energy-density Li-ion batteries. However, their commercial applications suffer from problems such as a drop in the capacity and discharge voltage during cycling. In this work, the cycling performance of a layered oxide Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2 is improved by integration with spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 to obtain a layered-spinel composite. Characterization by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) as well as cyclic voltammetry (CV) indicates that delayed degradation of layered Li2MnO3 and the suppressed growth of LiMn2O4-like spinel are responsible for the performance improvement.

Abstract:In this work,an orthogonal experiment with four factors and three levels were conducted to study the effect of preparation conditions on the microstructure and electrochemical performance of Li[Ni1/3Mn1/3Co1/3]O2(NMC). The analysis suggests that calcination temperature is the main factor affects the specific capacity of NMC. The morphology and microstructure of the NMC were investigated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). By improving the equipment condition based on the orthogonal analysis,NMC with small particle sizes,complete layered structure and excellent crystallinity which would contribute positively to the electrochemical performance can be prepared.

Abstract:Abstract Ternary cathode material LiNi x Co y Mn1-x-yO 2 (NCM) has been widely studied as a kind of cathode material with high voltage, high theoretical capacity, good cycling performance and high thermal stability, which is one of the most popular cathode materials for lithium ion battery. Nickle-rich NCM (⩾0.5) can meet the market demand for high-specific capacity power batteries due to its high nickel content and large charge-discharge capacity, But the safety and thermal stability are poor. Therefore, this paper mainly studies how to obtain Ni-rich NCM with high specific capacity and good thermal stability from three aspects of precursor preparation, surface coating and doping.

Abstract:Ni‐rich layered oxides (LiNi1–xMxO2; M = Co, Mn, …) are appealing alternatives to conventional LiCoO2 as cathodes in Li‐ion batteries for automobile and other large‐scale applications due to their high theoretical capacity and low cost. However, preparing stoichiometric LiNi1–xMxO2 with ordered layer structure and high reversible capacity, has proven difficult due to cation mixing in octahedral sites. Herein, in situ studies of synthesis reactions and the associated structural ordering in preparing LiNiO2 and the Co‐substituted variant, LiNi0.8Co0.2O2, are made, to gain insights into synthetic control of the structure and electrochemical properties of Ni‐rich layered oxides. Results from this study indicate a direct transformation of the intermediate from the rock salt structure into hexagonal phase, and during the process, Co substitution facilities the nucleation of a Co‐rich layered phase at low temperatures and subsequent growth and stabilization of solid solution Li(Ni, Co)O2 upon further heat treatment. Optimal conditions are identified from the in situ studies and utilized to obtain stoichiometric LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 that exhibits high capacity (up to 200 mA h g−1 ) with excellent retention. The findings shed light on designing high performance Ni‐rich layered oxide cathodes through synthetic control of the structural ordering in the materials.

With oxalic acid instead of citric acid as the chelating agent, the amount of chelating agent used in this experiment is only 36% of the traditional weight. Segmented sintering method is adopted to decrease the calcination temperature and reduce the calcination time. X-ray diffraction spectrometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are used to characterize the structure and micromorphology of the material. Meanwhile, charge–discharge test, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) are employed to explore its electrochemical performance. Our results demonstrate that Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2 electrode delivers a high reversible capacity of 277.3mAhg−1 and keeps excellent capacity retention of 98.4% after 50 cycles when tested at a 0.1C rate within the potential range of 2.0–4.8V at room temperature.

Abstract:Modified LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4-based materials with Cr-doped (LiNi0.5Mn1.4Cr0.1O4) and additional lithium (Li1.1Ni0.5Mn1.4Cr0.1O4) have been synthesized by a solid-state method and their physicochemical and electrochemical performances have been investigated. The experimental results show that the Cr doping in LiNi0.5Mn1.4Cr0.1O4 and Li1.1Ni0.5Mn1.4Cr0.1O4 suppresses the generation of Mn3+, decreases the polarization, improves the conductivity and optimizes the cyclic performance and rate stability compared to the pristine LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4. Besides, Li1.1Ni0.5Mn1.4Cr0.1O4 delivers a higher discharge capacity of 108 mAh g−1 for the first cycle and 99 mAh g−1 after 50 cycles, which is much better than LiNi0.5Mn1.4Cr0.1O4 and LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4. All these results show the vital role of the synergic effects between Cr3+ doping and additional lithium on the enhancement of electrochemical performance for LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4, which will guide the development of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4-based cathode material in the future.
