Abstract:The hydrogenation of 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde(3-HPA) to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) on Ni/Al_2O_3 catalyst was studied in a fixed-bed reactor. Under the conditions of 70(°C), 5.0 MPa, LHSV 6.0 h~(-1) and the molar ratio of H_2 to 3-HPA 7.0, the conversion of 3-HPA and the selectivity of 1,3-PDO could be 100% and greater than 99%, respectively.

Abstract:Ni-M/HM bimetal supported catalyst was used as first-stage hydrogenation catalyst in two stage hydrogenation of 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde(3-HPA) to 1,3-propanediol.Stability of Ni-M/HM catalyst was investigated in a fixed-bed reactor.Deactivation of the catalyst was studied by means of XRD,BET,TG-DTA,ICP-AES,XRF and element analysis.Under reaction conditions:5.0 MPa, LHSV of 3-HPA 2.0 h~(-1),mole ratio of H_2 to 3-HPA 8.0 and reaction temperature 50.0 - 72.0℃,the catalyst deactivated after 3 300 h on-stream time.Framework structure of HM in deactivated catalyst remained.Specific surface area and pore volume of the deactivated catalyst changed apparently,coke formed on the surface of the deactivated catalyst,and loss of Ni from surface of catalyst was determined.The main reason of the deactivation is deposition of oligomers and the secondary reason is loss of superficial Ni species.The activity of deactivated catalyst can be basically recovered after regeneration to the level of fresh catalyst.

Abstract:The catalyst for conversion of 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde to 1,3-propanediol was prepared by dry mixing, wet mixing, ion exchange and impregnation, respectively. The catalysts were characterized by transmission electron microscope and temperature programmed reduction and their catalytic performances for 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde to 1,3-propanediol were also studied. The results showed that, the carrier of hydrogen mordenite does not undermine its structure with introduction of Ni particles, the skeleton remains of its original features, the conversion of 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde was proportional with the dispersion of Ni on the catalyst, the stability of catalytic activity was related the binding force between the active sites of Ni with the carrier, the selectivity of 1,3-propanediol was more favorable with more Ni in the outer surface of the carrier.

Abstract:The structure and shape-appearance of nanon Cu-M-O/SiO2 catalyst prepared by co-precipitation method were characterized by XRD and SEM.The catalytic hydrogenation of methyl 3-hydroxypropionate(MHP) to 1,3-propanediol(1,3-PDO) on the nanon catalyst was studied in a fixed bed reactor.The results indicated that the prepared copper-based catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity for hydrogenation of MHP to 1,3-PDO and inhibited effectively the side-reaction of dehydration.Under the conditions of reaction temperature 160 ℃,pressure 6.8 MPa,hydrogen flux 95 mL/min and volume ratio of MHP to MeOH 1∶7,conversion of MHP and selectivity to 1,3-PDO could reach 98% and 80% respectively.

Abstract:3-Hydroxypropanal (3-HPA) is formed by the cross-aldol reaction of formaldehyde (HCHO) with acetaldehyde (CH3CHO), which further converts to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO). Mg/SiO2 and X-5Mg/SiO2 (X = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) catalysts were prepared using the sol–gel method and characterized with XRD, BET, TEM, and NH3- and CO2-TPD methods. The 5Mg/SiO2 showed higher activity in terms of the yield and selectivity due to its suitable basic and acidic density. The addition of Mn to the 5Mg/SiO2 catalyst caused dispelling of weak basic sites but maintained strong basic sites, and the high CH3CHO conversion was maintained. The increase of weak acidic sites contributed to the increase of 3-HPA selectivity for the 1Mn-5Mg/SiO2 catalyst. The cross-aldol reaction of HCHO with CH3CHO to produce 3-HPA more easily proceeded than the self-aldol reaction of CH3CHO according to the reaction kinetic analysis. Furthermore, Raney nickel was successfully applied to the hydrogenation process of 3-HPA to 1,3-PDO with over 90% HPA conversion and 1,3-PDO selectivity.

Abstract:The composite Ni/Al2O3-SiC catalyst was designed and synthesized for hydrogen production from propane partial oxidation. Through the composite of high thermal conductivity SiC and porous solid acid Al2O3, it improved the shortcoming of sintering and inactivation of high-temperature reaction for Ni-based catalysts. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 physical adsorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis etc. From the results, the SiC doped catalyst exhibited superior catalytic properties for hydrogen production by propane partial oxidation. By doping SiC with high thermal conductivity to Al2O3 support, the catalyst was improved for sintering and carbon deposition resistance and reducing the aggregation of Ni active sites reflected by improving the stability of hydrogen production.
DEACTIVATION OF THE CATALYST FOR TWO-STAGE HYDROGENATION OF 3-HYDROXYPROPIONALDEHYDE TO 1,3-PROPANEDIOL

Abstract:By using a fixed-bed reactor,the stability of the bimetal supported catalyst Ni-D/HM for two-stage hydrogenation of 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde to 1,3-propanediol was studied.The deactivation of the second-stage hydrogenation catalyst was studied by activity evaluation,XRD,BET,TG-DTA,atomic absorption spectroscopy and element analysis.It was found that for the second-stage hydrogenation of 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde to 1,3-propanediol,the surface area,pore volume and framework of the deactivated catalyst changed apparently compared to the fresh catalyst,and coke formed on and Ni was spilt from the surface of the deactivated catalyst,which were the main reasons of the deactivation of the catalyst.Long time stability test showed that the Ni-D/HM catalyst could keep relatively high activity and excellent stability with decreasing the reaction temperature and space velocity.

Abstract:Catalytic hydration of acrolein to 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde (3-HPA) is a key step for the chemical pro-duction of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) from renewable glycerol. However, a main issue of low reaction rate and long reaction time exists in the conventional hydration process. Here, we developed a microwave-assisted system for the efficient conversion of acrolein to 3-HPA. Simultaneous cooling method was adopted to maintain continuous microwave irradiation and meanwhile stable temperature during the reaction. The effects of catalyst type, temperature, catalyst loading and microwave power on acrolein conversion and 3-HPA selectivity were examined. Kinetic study showed that microwave irradi-ation could help for the reduction in activation energy, which led to acceleration in reaction rate during the acrolein hydration process. In addition, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the adsorption and reaction behavior of reactants molecules on the catalyst are consistent with the experi-mental results, which confirm the intensification effect of the microwave field.(c) 2023 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Nano copper-based catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation method and the performance of catalytic hydrogenation for methyl 3-hydroxypropionate (MHP) to 1, 3-propanediol (1, 3-PDO) on the nano catalysts were studied under a high-pressure microcontinuum fixed-bed reactor. The effects of structure, texture, and composition of the catalysts on the catalytic performance were investigated by characterizing the catalysts with XRD, TG–DTG, SEM, and N 2 adsorption/desorption analysis technique. The results showed that addition of promoters enhanced the activity and selectivity of copper-based catalysts, which promoted the dispersion of the active components effectively and stabilized the active center of the catalysts. Especially, the copper-based catalyst of loaded P could restrain side-reaction effectively and improve selectivity obviously, the conversion of MHP and the selectivity of 1, 3-PDO could be 91.30% and reach 90.15%, respectively.
Application of Co-Al Catalysts in Hydrogenation of Glycidol to 1,3-Propanediol

Abstract:1, 3-propanediol (1, 3-PDO) is an important intermediate for the synthesis of polytrimethylene terephthalate (PIT), and it is currently produced via the fermentation of glycerol. In this work, a series of Co-x/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared via the controlled calcination and reduction of Co-Al hydrotalcite, which were introduced to catalyze the hydrogenation of glycidol to produce 1, 3-PDO. The best performance was obtained over Co-x/Al2O3 catalyst after 5 h of reaction at 80 degrees C and 2 MPa H-2. The conversion of glycidol was 99.8%, and the yield of 1, 3-PDO was 68.0%. This result is not only higher than that of the Ni-2/Al2O3 and Cu-2/Al2O3 catalysts prepared by the same method, but also higher than that of the Al2O3 supported Pt, Pd, Ru catalysts. Characterization results indicated that the interaction between active site Co and the acid site of the Al2O3 support is of great importance to the activity of the catalyst and the selectivity towards 1, 3-PDO.

Abstract:The catalytic conversion of glycerol to 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO) is generally conducted batch-wise in an autoclave in the presence of high pressure H-2. The reforming and hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO over Ni/ZnO catalysts in a continuous flow fixed-bed reactor without added H-2 was reported. The Ni/ZnO catalysts were prepared by wetness impregnation (WI), co-precipitation (CP), hydrothermal treatment (HT), and carbon microsphere hard-templating (CT) methods. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and H-2 titration. At a low weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of glycerol, the 1,2-PDO produced got degraded to ethanol and gas phase products over catalysts with high Ni dispersion, while at a high WHSV, the selectivity for 1,2-PDO was limited by the hydrogenation of the acetol intermediate. At the optimized WHSV, the catalyst with a higher Ni dispersion was more selective for 1,2-PDO, and over the Ni/ZnO catalyst with the highest Ni dispersion, the highest selectivity of 54.9% for 1,2-PDO was obtained at a glycerol conversion of 85.4% at the WHSV of 0.84 h(-1).

Abstract:Hydrogen production from ethanol steam reforming over Ni/Al2O3 catalyst prepared from chelated with chitsan and impregnation was investigated. The catalyst was characterized by means of BET,XRD and TG. The catalytic properties of the catalyst were tested in a fixed-bed reactor fitted. Results showed that 10% Ni/Al2O3 catalyst exhibits high activity for the ethanol steam reforming when temperature was higher than 500℃ and the mole proportion of water and EtOH was 3,conversion of ethanol was 100 % and selectivity of hydrogen was higher than 68 %. The selectivity of hydrogen enhanced as increasing the mole proportion of water and EtOH.

Abstract:Diisopropylimine (DIPI) was used as a probe molecule to investigate the hydrogenation of C=N on the Ni/Al2O3, Ni/LaAIO and Ni/LaOx catalysts. Microcalorimetric adsorption and infrared spectroscopy were applied to determine the surface bond strengths and structures of the reactant and product. It was found that the acidic support favored the adsorption and activation of DIPI and H-2 on Ni, leading to the increased activity (TOF) for the hydrogenation of DIPI, while the basic support promoted the dehydrogenation of the amine product on Ni, being unfavorable for the hydrogenation of DIPI. In particular, the conversion of DIPI was significantly increased when isopropanol (IPA) was used as a solvent, due to the hydrogen transfer reaction (HTR) between IPA and DIPI, which was further evidenced by the infrared spectrum of co-adsorbed IPA and DIPI. Preparation and evaluation of catalysts for hydrogenation of 1,3-dichloropropene by group-protected technology

Abstract:The palladium (Pd) catalysts for the hydrogenation of 1,3-dichloropropene to 1,3-propanediol were prepared by dipping process. The effects of supports, impregnation methods, loadings, calcinations temperatures, reductant concentrations and solutions on the activity and selectivity of the catalysts were investigated. Under the conditions of temperature 30°C, atmospheric pressure and reaction time 10 h, the performance of the catalysts were evaluated. The optimum condition of the preparation process was as follows: γ-Al2O3 as support, PdCl2 in the aqueous ammonia as impregnation solution, 5% loading of Pd, calcinated under 400°C, reduced by hydrazine hydrate (volume ratio of water to 85% aqueous N2H4 1.5) and cyclohexane as solvent. The selectivity of hydrogenation was found up to 40.53% and conversion to 80.12%. It was concluded that the selectivity was deeply affected by the hydrogenolysis of C-O bond and C-Cl bond of 3-chloroally-lacetate.

Abstract:Hydrogen-free synthesis of 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO) from glycerol was carried out over a series of Cu-Mg-Al catalysts with different (Cu + Mg)/Al ratios. Several hydrogen donors were tested and it was found that ethanol was the best donor for this process, the efficiency of the ethanol donor reached 79.8%. Cu-0.4/Mg6.28Al1.32O8.26 showed the best performance among these tested catalysts. The conversion of glycerol and selectivity of 1,2-PDO reached 95.1% and 92.2%, respectively, at 210 degrees C. Characterizations indicated that the activity of Cu-Mg-Al for this hydrogen-free synthesis of 1,2-PDO depended mainly on the basicity of the catalysts. Both the conversion of glycerol and selectivity to 1,2-PDO could be improved with prolonged time, reaction temperature and the amount of hydrogen donor. The reaction mechanism was proposed.
Research on Hydrogenolysis of Glycerol to 1, 2-Propylene Glycol by Using Supported Raney-Cu/Al 2 O 3

Abstract:New supported Raney-Cu catalyst was prepared from pseudo-boelunite powder and copper aluminum alloy powder. It could be used in a continuous-flow fixed-bed reactor and it was also a good catalyst for hydrogenolysis of glycerol to propylene glycol after the two raw materials were processed by the following procedures: molding, drying, calcination, and leaching. XRD, H-2-TPR, as well as SEM technique were employed to study the physicochemical properties of the catalysts, and the hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-propylene glycol (1,2-PDO) was used as a probe to evaluate the performance of supported skeletal copper catalysts. The test result indicated that CuAl2 was the main crystal phase of precursor after the dried strips were calcined at 850 degrees C in air. A part of CuAl2 was oxidized to alpha-Al2O3, which was the main contributor to the strength of Raney-Cu/Al2O3, while the remaining CuAl2 was converted to active skeletal copper after the leaching process. The effects of reaction temperature, hydrogen pressure, LHSV, hydrogen-oil ratio, glycerol concentration, and alkaline additives on the catalytic performance were studied in water or ethanol, respectively. Conversion of glycerol and selectivity of 1,2-PDO were 30.9% and 91.4% in water, or 99.0% and 73.6% in the ethanol system, respectively, when the reaction was performed at a temperature of 215 degrees C, a H-2 pressure of 3 MPa, a LHSV of 1.0 h(-1), a hydrogen-oil ratio of 500, and a glycerol concentration of 20% (ethyl alcohol solution).
Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane over Ni-Mo-Mg-O Catalysts

Abstract:In this work, a series of Ni-Mo-Mg-O catalysts with mesoporous structure prepared by sol-gel method were investigated for the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP). The techniques of temperature-programmed reduction with H2 (H2-TPR), N2 adsorption-desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) were employed for catalyst characterization. It is found that the activity of the catalysts for ODHP increases first and then decreases with the increase of Mo content. The catalyst with a Mo/Ni atomic ratio of 1/1 exhibits the best catalytic activity, which gives the propene selectivity of 81.4% at a propane conversion of 11.3% under 600°C and maintains the good catalytic performance for 22 h on stream. This is related not only to its high reducibility and dispersion as revealed by TPR and XRD, but also to the formation of more selective oxygen species on the MoOx-NiO interface as identified by XPS.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3-Propanediol (1,3-PDO) presents a sustainable approach, leveraging a bio-renewable feedstock and significantly enhancing the economic viability of biodiesel production. However, the limited selectivity toward 1,3-PDO in glycerol hydrogenolysis has hindered its widespread adoption on an industrial scale. In this work, we synthesized a series of Pt/WO3–Al2O3 catalysts using a simple wetness sequential impregnation method. Comprehensive characterization and kinetic studies revealed that the surface tungsten content of the catalyst exerted a critical and multifaceted influence on the catalytic performances. Under optimal conditions, glycerol could be selectively converted to 1,3-PDO with a yield of 43% in a fixed-bed continuous flow reactor. Furthermore, a plausible reaction mechanism for glycerol hydrogenolysis was proposed based on the correlations between catalyst structure and catalytic performance.

Abstract:Ni-B amorphous catalysts were prepared by chemical reduction of nickel chloride with potassium borohydride aqueous solution and characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Tetter(BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), inductively coupled plasma (ICP) techniques. The catalytic performances of model compounds and bio-oil to produce saturated alcohols were evaluated in a semi-batch reactor. The results showed that the conversion of model compounds(acetone, furfural and phenol) and the selectivity of saturated alcohols reached 99.99% and 90.00% at 110 degrees C, 4.0 MPa(initial pressure). Under the conditions of 150 degrees C and 4.0 MPa, the yield of saturated alcohols reached 47.54%. High temperature of above 150 degrees C resulted in the transformation of amorphous phase to form crystal, which was attributed to the low catalytic activity. This work provides a new alternative for the production of saturated alcohols from bio-oil.

Abstract:Alumina supported Pt-Sn-Li catalyst (PtSnLi/Al_2O_3) was prepared by co-impregnation method and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD),transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Brunaure-Emmet-Teller (BET).The catalytic selective hydrogen oxidation performance of the catalysts for propane dehydrogenation was investigated in a fixed-bed reactor.The results showed that Sn and Li could improve the catalytic activity and selectivity of the PtSnLi/Al_2O_3.The selective oxidation of H_2 was about 80%,the conversion of O_2 was above 98% and the loss of the hydrocarbons was 0.2% under the conditions of normal presuure,550℃ and weight hourly space velocity 1.45 h~(-1). Compared with PtSn/Al_2O_3,the conversion of O_2 was the same,the selective oxidation of H_2 increased 29.2% and the loss of the hydrocarbons decreased 0.9%.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation plays an important role in chemical industries, yet its selectivity is usually limited by the mass transfer. In this work, the enhanced hydrogenation selectivity was achieved in a rotating packed bed (RPB) reactor with excellent mass transfer efficiency. Aiming to be used under the centrifugal filed, a monolithic catalyst Pd/γ-Al2O3/nickel foam suiting for the shape and size of the rotor of RPB reactor was prepared by the electrophoretic deposition method. The mechanical strength of the catalyst can meet the requirement of high centrifugal force in the RPB. The hydrogenation selectivity in the RPB reactor using the 3-methyl-1-pentyn-3-ol hydrogenation system was 3–8 times higher than that in a stirred tank reactor under similar conditions. This work proves the feasibility of intensifying the selectivity of hydrogenation process in the RPB reactor.
