Abstract:Let $\{q_n\}_{n=0}^\infty\subset [0,1]$ satisfy $q_0=0$, $\sum_{n=0}^\infty q_n=1$, and $\gcd\{n\geq 1\mid q_n\neq 0\}=1$. We consider the following process: Let $x$ be a real number. We first set $x=0$. Then $x$ is increased by $i$ with probability $q_i~(i=0,1,2,\cdots)$ every time. For $n\geq 0$, let $p_n$ be the probability such that $x=n$ occurs, so we have $p_0=1$ and $p_n=q_1p_{n-1}+q_2p_{n-2}+\cdots+q_np_0~(n\geq 1)$. In this setting, we have $\lim_n p_n=1/\sum_{i=0}^\infty iq_i$, where we define $1/\sum_{i=0}^\infty iq_i=0$ if $\sum_{i=0}^\infty iq_i=+\infty$. This result is known as (discrete case of) Blackwell's renewal theorem. The proof of $\lim_n p_n=1/\sum_{i=0}^\infty iq_i$ is not trivial, while the meaning of $\lim_n p_n=1/\sum_{i=0}^\infty iq_i$ is clear since the expected value of increasing number $i$ is $\sum_{i=0}^\infty iq_i$. Many proofs of this result have been given. In this paper, we will also provide a proof of this result. The idea of our proof is based on Fourier-analytic methods and Tauberian theorems for almost convergent sequences, while we actually need only elementary analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, by establishing a Borel–Cantelli lemma for a capacity which is not necessarily continuous, and a link between a sequence of independent random variables under the sub-linear expectation and a sequence of independent random variables on ℝ∞ under a probability, we give the sufficient and necessary conditions of the strong law of large numbers for independent and identically distributed random variables under the sub-linear expectation, and the sufficient and necessary conditions for the convergence of an infinite series of independent random variables, without the assumption on the continuity of the capacities. A purely probabilistic proof of a weak law of large numbers is also given.

Abstract:A general method to prove the strong law of large numbers is given by using the maximal tail probability. As a result the convergence rate of Sn/n for both positively associated sequences and negatively associated sequences is n-1/2(logn)1/2(loglogn)δ/2 for any δ>1. This result closes to the optimal achievable convergence rate under independent random variables, and improves the rates n-1/3(logn)2/3 and n-1/3(logn)5/3 obtained by Ioannides and Roussas [1999. Abstract:For absolutely convergent series we state explicitly a one-sided summation estimate that can be viewed as the discrete analogue of the change of variable formula on the half line. This estimate is implicit in Pascal Lefèvre's recent elegant proof of the classical discrete Hardy inequality. Here we remove a superfluous irrationality condition therein and point out the change of variable character of his approach. This leads to a simpler, shorter and \textit{bona fide} Ingham type proof of the discrete Hardy inequality, and also provides the optimal constant.

Abstract:Let X1,X2,…, be a sequence of i.i.d. random variables. Xj,j⩽n is called a near-maximum iff Xj falls within a distance of the maximum Mn=max{X1,…,Xn}. In this paper, we focus on medium tailed distributions. A useful relationship on the number of near-maxima is built between general medium tailed and exponential distributions. Limit properties of the ratio Sn(a)/Sn are discussed, where Sn(a) is the sum of near-maxima.

Abstract:Sun, in 2022, introduced a conjectured evaluation for a series of convergence rate $\frac{1}{2}$ involving harmonic numbers. We prove both this conjecture and a stronger version of this conjecture, using a summation technique based on a beta-type integral we had previously introduced. Our full proof also requires applications of Bailey's ${}_{2}F_{1}\left( \frac{1}{2} \right)$-formula, Dixon's ${}_{3}F_{2}(1)$-formula, an almost-poised version of Dixon's formula due to Chu, Watson's formula for ${}_{3}F_{2}(1)$-series, the Gauss summation theorem, Euler's formula for ${}_{2}F_{1}$-series, elliptic integral singular values, and lemniscate-like constants recently introduced by Campbell and Chu. The techniques involved in our proof are useful, more broadly, in the reduction of difficult sums of convergence rate $\frac{1}{2}$ to previously evaluable expressions.
