Obviously, the case for x = l of (1.1) could be generally treated by means of the well-known Euler-Maclaurin summation formula. The object of this paper is to find a general summation formula for (1.1) that could be applied readily to some interesting special cases, e.g., those with f{i)-t (2 ei?), / ( / ) = logf (V>1), and f(t) = q (0<q<l)9 respectively. Related results will be presented in Sections 3-5. Recall that for the particular case f(t) = t and [a, b) = [0, oo) with/? being a positive integer, we have the classical result (cf. [1], [2], [4])

Abstract:Given a multiplicative function $f$, we let $S(x,f)=\sum_{n\leq x}f(n)$ be the associated partial sum. In this note, we show that lower bounds on partial sums of divisor-bounded functions result in lower bounds on the partial sums associated to their products. More precisely, we let $f_j$, $j=1,2$ be such that $|f_j(n)|\leq \tau(n)^\kappa$ for some $\kappa\in\mathbb{N}$, and assume their partial sums satisfy $\left|S(x_j,f_j)\right|\geq \eta x_j (\log x_j)^{2^\kappa-1}$ for some $x_1, x_2\gg 1$ and $\eta>\max_j\{(\log x_j)^{-1/100}\}$. We then show that there exists $x\geq \min\{x_1, x_2\}^{\xi^2}$ such that $\left|S(x,f_1f_2)\right|\geq \xi x (\log x)^{2^{2\kappa}-1}$, where $\xi=C\eta^{1+2^{\kappa+3}}$ for some absolute constant $C>0$.

Since the error of approximating $li(x)$ using Stieltjes asymptotic series $\displaystyle li_{*}(x) = \frac{x}{\log(x)}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\frac{k!}{\log^{k}(x)} + (\log(x)-n)\frac{xn!}{\log^{n+1}(x)}$, with $\displaystyle n = \lfloor \log(x) \rfloor$ for all $x\ge e$, satisfies $\displaystyle |\varepsilon(x)| = |li(x)-li_{*}(x)| \le 1.265692883422\ldots$, by using Stirling's approximation and some facts about $\log(x)$ and floor functions, we show that $\displaystyle \varepsilon_{0}(x) = li(x) - li_{\underline{1/2},0}(x)$, $\displaystyle \underline{\varepsilon}(x) = li(x) - li_{\underline{1/2},\underline{\kappa}\log(x)}(x)$, $\displaystyle \overline{\varepsilon}(x) = li(x) - li_{\overline{1/2},\overline{\kappa}\log(x)}(x)$, and $\varepsilon_{1}(x) = li_{\overline{1/2},1}(x) - li(x)$ belong to $O\left(\sqrt{\frac{x}{\log(x)}}\right)$. Moreover, we conjecture that $li_{0}(x) \le \pi(x) \le li_{1}(x)$ and $\underline{li}(x) \le \pi(x) \le \overline{li}(x)$ for all $x \ge e$, here $\pi(x)$ is the prime counting function and we show that if one of those conjectures is true then the Riemann Hypothesis is true.

A better than $3/2$ exponent for iterated sums and products over $\mathbb R$

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the bound \[ \max \{ |8A-7A|,|5f(A)-4f(A)| \} \gg |A|^{\frac{3}{2} + \frac{1}{54}-o(1)} \] holds for all $A \subset \mathbb R$, and for all convex functions $f$ which satisfy an additional technical condition. This technical condition is satisfied by the logarithmic function, and this fact can be used to deduce a sum-product estimate \[ \max \{ |16A| , |A^{(16)}| \} \gg |A|^{\frac{3}{2} + c}, \] for some $c>0$. Previously, no sum-product estimate over $\mathbb R$ with exponent strictly greater than $3/2$ was known for any number of variables. Moreover, the technical condition on $f$ seems to be satisfied for most interesting cases, and we give some further applications. In particular, we show that \[ |AA| \leq K|A| \implies \,\forall d \in \mathbb R \setminus \{0 \}, \,\, |\{(a,b) \in A \times A : a-b=d \}| \ll K^C |A|^{\frac{2}{3}-c'}, \] where $c,C>0$ are absolute constants.

Explicit van der Corput's $d$-th derivative estimate

Abstract:We give an explicit version for van der Corput's $d$-th derivative estimate of exponential sums. $ \textbf{Theorem.}$ Let $X$, and $Y\in\mathbb{R}$ be such that $\lfloor Y\rfloor>d$ where $d\ge3$ is a natural number. Let $f\colon(X,X+Y]\to\mathbb{R}$ be a real function with continuous derivatives up to the order $d$. Assume that $0<\lambda\le f^{(d)}(x)\le\Lambda$ for $X<x\le X+Y$. Denote by $D=2^d$. Then \begin{equation}\Bigl|\frac{1}{Y}\sum_{X<n\le X+Y}e(f(n))\Bigr|\le\max\Bigl\{A_d\Bigl(\frac{\Lambda}{\lambda Y}\Bigr)^{2/D}, B_d\Bigl(\frac{\Lambda^2}{\lambda}\Bigr)^{1/(D-2)},C_d(\lambda Y^d)^{-2/D}\Bigr\},\end{equation} where $A_d$, $B_d$, and $C_d$ are explicit constants. They depend on $d$ but for $d\ge2$ for example $A_d< 7.5$, $B_d<5.8$ and $C_d<10.9$. We follow the reasoning of van der Corput in three papers published in 1937, that contained an error. I correct this error and try to get the smallest possible constants. We apply this theorem to zeta sums, giving the best choice of $d$ in each case. Also, we prove that our Theorem implies Titchmarsh's Theorem 5.13.

On multiplicative functions with small partial sums

Abstract:In analytic number theory, several results make use of information regarding the prime values of a multiplicative function in order to extract information about its averages. Examples of such results include Wirsing's theorem and the Landau-Selberg-Delange method. In this paper, we are interested in the opposite direction. In particular, we prove that when $f$ is a suitable divisor-bounded multiplicative function with small partial sums, then $f(p)\approx-p^{i\gamma_1}-\ldots-p^{i\gamma_m}$ on average, where the $\gamma_j$'s are the imaginary parts of the zeros of the Dirichet series of $f$ on the line $\Re(s)=1$. This extends a result of Koukoulopoulos and Soundararajan and it builds upon ideas coming from previous work of Koukoulopoulos for the case where $|f|\leqslant 1$.

Abstract:We prove that given $\lambda \in \mathbb{R}$ such that $0 < \lambda < 1$, then $\pi(x + x^\lambda) - \pi(x) \sim \displaystyle \frac{x^\lambda}{\log(x)}$. This solves a long-standing problem concerning the existence of primes in short intervals. In particular, we give a positive answer (for all sufficiently large number) to some old conjectures about prime numbers, such as Legendre's conjecture about the existence of at least two primes between two consecutive squares.

Abstract:Recently, Bordell\'{e}s, Dai, Heyman, Pan and Shparlinski in \cite{Igor} considered a partial sum involving the Euler totient function and the integer parts $\lfloor x/n\rfloor$ function. Among other things, they obtained reasonably tight upper and lower bounds for their sum using the theory of exponent pairs and in particular, using a recently discovered Bourgain's exponent pair. Based on numerical evidences, they also pose a question on the asymptotic behaviour for their sum which we state here as a conjecture. The aim of this paper is to prove an asymptotic formula for the average of their sum in the interval $[1,x]$. We show via Perron's formula that this average is a certain weighted analogue of the sum that Bordell\'{e}s \textit{et al} considered in their paper. Further, we show that their conjecture is true under certain conditions. Our proof involves Perron's contour integral method besides some analytic estimates of the Riemann zeta function $\zeta(s)$ in the zero-free region.

Abstract:We prove a quantitative version of the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture with an almost sharp error term. Precisely, let $\psi:\mathbb{N}\to[0,1/2]$ be a function such that the series $\sum_{q=1}^\infty \varphi(q)\psi(q)/q$ diverges. In addition, given $\alpha\in\mathbb{R}$ and $Q\geqslant1$, let $N(\alpha;Q)$ be the number of coprime pairs $(a,q)\in\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{N}$ with $q\leqslant Q$ and $|\alpha-a/q|<\psi(q)/q$. Lastly, let $\Psi(Q)=\sum_{q\leqslant Q}2\varphi(q)\psi(q)/q$, which is the expected value of $N(\alpha;Q)$ when $\alpha$ is uniformly chosen from $[0, 1]$. We prove that $N(\alpha;Q)=\Psi(Q)+O_{\alpha,\varepsilon}(\Psi(Q)^{1/2+\varepsilon})$ for almost all $\alpha$ (in the Lebesgue sense) and for every fixed $\varepsilon>0$. This improves upon results of Koukoulopoulos-Maynard and of Aistleitner-Borda-Hauke.

Euler Product Asymptotics for $L$-functions of Elliptic Curves

Abstract:Let $E/\mathbb Q$ be an elliptic curve and for each prime $p$, let $N_p$ denote the number of points of $E$ modulo $p$. The original version of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture asserts that $\prod \limits _{p \leq x} \frac{N_p}{p} \sim C (\log x) ^{\text{rank}(E(\mathbb Q))}$ as $x \to \infty$. Goldfeld showed that this conjecture implies both the Riemann Hypothesis for $L(E, s)$ and the modern formulation of the conjecture i.e. that $\text{ord}_{s=1} L(E, s)= \text{rank}(E(\mathbb Q))$. In this paper, we prove that if we let $r=\text{ord} _{s=1}L(E, s)$, then under the assumption of the Riemann Hypothesis for $L(E, s)$, we have that $\prod \limits _{p \leq x} \frac{N_p}{p} \sim C (\log x)^r$ for all $x$ outside a set of finite logarithmic measure. As corollaries, we recover not only Goldfeld's result, but we also prove a result in the direction of the converse. Our method of proof is based on establishing the asymptotic behaviour of partial Euler products of $L(E, s)$ in the right-half of the critical strip.

Abstract:In this paper we obtain a mean value theorem for a general Dirichlet series $f(s)= \sum_{j=1}^\infty a_j n_j^{-s}$ with positive coefficients for which the counting function $A(x) = \sum_{n_{j}\le x}a_{j}$ satisfies $A(x)=\rho x + O(x^\beta)$ for some $\rho>0$ and $\beta<1$. We prove that $\frac1T\int_0^T |f(\sigma+it)|^2\, dt \to \sum_{j=1}^\infty a_j^2n_j^{-2\sigma}$ for $\sigma>\frac{1+\beta}{2}$ and obtain an upper bound for this moment for $\beta<\sigma\le \frac{1+\beta}{2}$. We provide a number of examples indicating the sharpness of our results.

Abstract:We study the distribution functions of several classical error terms in analytic number theory, focusing on the remainder term in the Dirichlet divisor problem $\Delta(x)$. We first bound the discrepancy between the distribution function of $\Delta(x)$ and that of a corresponding probabilistic random model, improving results of Heath-Brown and Lau. We then determine the shape of its large deviations in a certain uniform range, which we believe to be the limit of our method, given our current knowledge about the linear relations among the $\sqrt{n}$ for square-free positive integers $n$. Finally, we obtain similar results for the error terms in the Gauss circle problem and in the second moment of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line.
