Abstract:We prove a totally explicit bound for short sums of certain non-negative arithmetic functions satisfying a general growth condition, and apply this result to derive two explicit estimates for the Erd\H{o}s-Hooley $\Delta$-function in short intervals.

Abstract:We prove a quantitative version of the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture with an almost sharp error term. Precisely, let $\psi:\mathbb{N}\to[0,1/2]$ be a function such that the series $\sum_{q=1}^\infty \varphi(q)\psi(q)/q$ diverges. In addition, given $\alpha\in\mathbb{R}$ and $Q\geqslant1$, let $N(\alpha;Q)$ be the number of coprime pairs $(a,q)\in\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{N}$ with $q\leqslant Q$ and $|\alpha-a/q|<\psi(q)/q$. Lastly, let $\Psi(Q)=\sum_{q\leqslant Q}2\varphi(q)\psi(q)/q$, which is the expected value of $N(\alpha;Q)$ when $\alpha$ is uniformly chosen from $[0, 1]$. We prove that $N(\alpha;Q)=\Psi(Q)+O_{\alpha,\varepsilon}(\Psi(Q)^{1/2+\varepsilon})$ for almost all $\alpha$ (in the Lebesgue sense) and for every fixed $\varepsilon>0$. This improves upon results of Koukoulopoulos-Maynard and of Aistleitner-Borda-Hauke.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the bound holds for all , and for all convex functions f which satisfy an additional technical condition. This technical condition is satisfied by the logarithmic function, and this fact can be used to deduce a sum-product estimate for some . Previously, no sum-product estimate over with exponent strictly greater than was known for any number of variables. Moreover, the technical condition on f seems to be satisfied for most interesting cases, and we give some further applications. In particular, we show that where are absolute constants.

Abstract:Recently, Bordell\'{e}s, Dai, Heyman, Pan and Shparlinski in \cite{Igor} considered a partial sum involving the Euler totient function and the integer parts $\lfloor x/n\rfloor$ function. Among other things, they obtained reasonably tight upper and lower bounds for their sum using the theory of exponent pairs and in particular, using a recently discovered Bourgain's exponent pair. Based on numerical evidences, they also pose a question on the asymptotic behaviour for their sum which we state here as a conjecture. The aim of this paper is to prove an asymptotic formula for the average of their sum in the interval $[1,x]$. We show via Perron's formula that this average is a certain weighted analogue of the sum that Bordell\'{e}s \textit{et al} considered in their paper. Further, we show that their conjecture is true under certain conditions. Our proof involves Perron's contour integral method besides some analytic estimates of the Riemann zeta function $\zeta(s)$ in the zero-free region.

Abstract:In this short, we study sums of the shape $\sum_{n\leqslant x}{f([x/n])}/{[x/n]},$ where $f$ is Euler totient function $\varphi$, Dedekind function $\Psi$, sum-of-divisors function $\sigma$ or the alternating sum-of-divisors function $\beta.$ We improve previous results when $f=\varphi$ and derive new estimates when $f=\Psi, f=\sigma$ and $f=\beta.$

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the bound \[ \max \{ |8A-7A|,|5f(A)-4f(A)| \} \gg |A|^{\frac{3}{2} + \frac{1}{54}-o(1)} \] holds for all $A \subset \mathbb R$, and for all convex functions $f$ which satisfy an additional technical condition. Abstract:We study higher uniformity properties of the Möbius function $\mu$, the von Mangoldt function $\Lambda$, and the divisor functions $d_k$ on short intervals $(X,X+H]$ with $X^{\theta+\varepsilon} \leq H \leq X^{1-\varepsilon}$ for a fixed constant $0 \leq \theta < 1$ and any $\varepsilon>0$. More precisely, letting $\Lambda^\sharp$ and $d_k^\sharp$ be suitable approximants of $\Lambda$ and $d_k$ and $\mu^\sharp = 0$, we show for instance that, for any nilsequence $F(g(n)\Gamma)$, we have \[ \sum_{X < n \leq X+H} (f(n)-f^\sharp(n)) F(g(n) \Gamma) \ll H \log^{-A} X \] when $\theta = 5/8$ and $f \in \{\Lambda, \mu, d_k\}$ or $\theta = 1/3$ and $f = d_2$. As a consequence, we show that the short interval Gowers norms $\|f-f^\sharp\|_{U^s(X,X+H]}$ are also asymptotically small for any fixed $s$ for these choices of $f,\theta$. As applications, we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of solutions to linear equations in primes in short intervals, and show that multiple ergodic averages along primes in short intervals converge in $L^2$. Our innovations include the use of multi-parameter nilsequence equidistribution theorems to control type $II$ sums, and an elementary decomposition of the neighbourhood of a hyperbola into arithmetic progressions to control type $I_2$ sums.

Exponential sums over integers without large prime divisors

Abstract:We obtain a new bound on exponential sums over integers without large prime divisors, improving that of Fouvry and Tenenbaum (1991). The improvement is based on exploiting the trilinear structure of certain exponential sums, appearing in the argument. We combine this idea with some input from additive combinatorics and, for a fixed integer $\nu\ne 0$, we also obtain new bounds on exponential sums with $\nu$-th powers of such integers.

Abstract:We are interested in finding an explicit estimate to the binomial sum $Q_n(x)=\sum_{k=0}^{n} k! {n\choose k}^2 (-x)^{k}$ at $x=1$ for $n=0,1,2,\ldots$. Despite of its own interest the polynomial $Q_n(x)$ is important as the denominator in the Padé identity of the Euler's factorial series $E(x) = \sum_{k=0}^{\infty} k! x^k$ as well as its close connection to a classical Laguerre polynomial $L_n(x) = \frac{1}{n!} e^x \left(\frac{d}{dx}\right)^n (e^{-x}x^n)$. Our main result is the explicit bound $$\left|L_n(1)-\sqrt{\frac{e}{\pi}}\cdot \frac{\cos (2\sqrt{n}-\frac{\pi}{4})}{n^{1/4}} +\frac{17}{48}\sqrt{\frac{e}{\pi}}\frac{\sin(2\sqrt{n}-\frac{\pi}{4})}{n^{3/4}}\right|<\frac{0.51}{n}$$ for all $n=0,1,2,\ldots$, which replaces the Fejér's asymptotic formula from 1909. As a corollary of this, one also gets a new proof for the bound $|Q_{n}(1)| \le n!$, and even more.

Abstract:By making use of arithmetic information inequalities, we give a short new proof of the discretised ring theorem for sets of real numbers. Our proof gives a strong quantitative bound. In particular, we show that if $A \subset [1,2]$ is a $(\delta,\sigma)$-set, then $A+A$ or $A\cdot A$ has $\delta$-covering number at least $\delta^{-c}|A|$ for any $0 < c < \min\{\sigma/6, (1-\sigma)/6\}$ provided that $\delta > 0$ is small enough.

Then our results imply for instance that when $X^{1/3+\varepsilon} \leq H \leq X$ we have, for almost all $x \in [X, 2X]$, \[ \sup_{g \in \text{Poly}(\mathbb{Z} \to G)} \left| \sum_{x < n \leq x+H} (\Lambda(n)-\Lambda^\sharp(n)) \overline{F}(g(n)\Gamma) \right| \ll H\log^{-A} X \] for any fixed $A>0$, and that when $X^{\varepsilon} \leq H \leq X$ we have, for almost all $x \in [X, 2X]$, \[ \sup_{g \in \text{Poly}(\mathbb{Z} \to G)} \left| \sum_{x < n \leq x+H} (d_k(n)-d_k^\sharp(n)) \overline{F}(g(n)\Gamma) \right| = o(H \log^{k-1} X). \] As a consequence, we show that the short interval Gowers norms $\|\Lambda-\Lambda^\sharp\|_{U^s(X,X+H]}$ and $\|d_k-d_k^\sharp\|_{U^s(X,X+H]}$ are also asymptotically small for any fixed $s$ in the same ranges of $H$. This in turn allows us to establish the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture and the divisor correlation conjecture with a short average over one variable. Our main new ingredients are type $II$ estimates obtained by developing a "contagion lemma" for nilsequences and then using this to "scale up" an approximate functional equation for the nilsequence to a larger scale. This extends an approach developed by Walsh for Fourier uniformity.

Abstract:In order to study the analytic properties of the Goldbach generating function we consider a smooth version, similar to the Chebyshev function for the Prime Number Theorem. In this paper we obtain explicit numerical estimates for the average order of its summatory function both in the classical case and in arithmetic progressions. These support the existing asymptotic results, under the (Generalised) Riemann Hypothesis, involving error terms.

Let $f\colon(X,X+Y]\to\mathbb{R}$ be a real function with continuous derivatives up to the order $d$. Assume that $0<\lambda\le f^{(d)}(x)\le\Lambda$ for $X<x\le X+Y$. Denote by $D=2^d$. Then \begin{equation}\Bigl|\frac{1}{Y}\sum_{X<n\le X+Y}e(f(n))\Bigr|\le\max\Bigl\{A_d\Bigl(\frac{\Lambda}{\lambda Y}\Bigr)^{2/D}, B_d\Bigl(\frac{\Lambda^2}{\lambda}\Bigr)^{1/(D-2)},C_d(\lambda Y^d)^{-2/D}\Bigr\},\end{equation} where $A_d$, $B_d$, and $C_d$ are explicit constants. They depend on $d$ but for $d\ge2$ for example $A_d< 7.5$, $B_d<5.8$ and $C_d<10.9$. We follow the reasoning of van der Corput in three papers published in 1937, that contained an error. I correct this error and try to get the smallest possible constants. We apply this theorem to zeta sums, giving the best choice of $d$ in each case. Also, we prove that our Theorem implies Titchmarsh's Theorem 5.13.

Abstract:The Erdős-Hooley Delta function is defined for $n\in\mathbb{N}$ as $\Delta(n)=\sup_{u\in\mathbb{R}} \#\{d|n : e^u<d\le e^{u+1}\}$. We prove that $\sum_{n\le x} \Delta(n) \ll x(\log\log x)^{11/4}$ for all $x\ge100$. This improves on earlier work of Hooley, Hall--Tenenbaum and La Bretèche-Tenenbaum.
