Abstract:We give some concrete constructions of real equiangular line sets. The emphasis here is on {\em building blocks} for certain angles which are then used to build up larger equiangular line sets. We concentrate on angles greater than or equal to 1/7.

Abstract:A set of lines through the origin in Euclidean space is called equiangular when any pair of lines from the set intersects with each other at a common angle. We study the maximum size of equiangular lines in Euclidean space and use a graph theoretic approach to prove that all the currently known constructions for maximum equiangular lines in <math>Rd</math> cannot be added by any more lines to form a larger equiangular set of lines when <math>d=14,16,17,18,19</math>, and 20. We give new constructions of large equiangular lines which are 248 equiangular lines in <math>R42</math>, 200 equiangular lines in <math>R41</math>, 168 equiangular lines in <math>R40</math>, 152 equiangular lines in <math>R39</math> with angle 1/7, and 56 equiangular lines in <math>R18</math> with angle 1/5.

Abstract:In this paper, claims by Lemmens and Seidel in 1973 about equiangular sets of lines with angle $1/5$ are proved by carefully analyzing pillar decompositions, with the aid of the uniqueness of two-graphs on $276$ vertices. The Neumann Theorem is generalized in the sense that if there are more than $2r-2$ equiangular lines in $\mathbb{R}^r$, then the angle is quite restricted. Together with techniques on finding saturated equiangular sets, we determine the maximum size of equiangular sets "exactly" in an $r$-dimensional Euclidean space for $r = 8$, $9$, and $10$.

Abstract:I introduce the problem of finding maximal sets of equiangular lines, in both its real and complex versions, attempting to write the treatment that I would have wanted when I first encountered the subject. Equiangular lines intersect in the overlap region of quantum information theory, the octonions and Hilbert's twelfth problem. The question of how many equiangular lines can fit into a space of a given dimension is easy to pose -- a high-school student can grasp it -- yet it is hard to answer, being as yet unresolved. This contrast of ease and difficulty gives the problem a classic charm.

Abstract:In 2018, Szöllősi and Östergård enumerated some sets of equiangular lines with common angle $\arccos(1/3)$ with a computer. Furthermore, they verified that the numbers $\omega(n)$ of sets of $n$ equiangular lines with common angle $\arccos(1/3)$ in dimension $7$ are almost symmetric around $n=14$. In this paper, we construct the other sets of equiangular lines with common angle $\arccos(1/3)$ from root lattices of type $A$ or $D$ with the aid of switching roots. In addition, we prove that the numbers $\omega(n)$ are almost symmetric without a computer.

Abstract:A p -set of equiangular lines in C 3 is a set of p lines spanning C 3 each pair of which has the same nonzero angle arccos c , where 0 < c < 1. It is known that via a real matrix representation, a pair of lines in R 3 with angle arccos c yields a pair of isoclinic planes in R 6 with angle arccos c . In this article we characterize all p -tuples of equi-isoclinic planes in R 6 which come via our real matrix representation from p -tuples of equiangular lines in C 3 . More precisely, we describe quadruples, quintuples up to nine-tuples of equiangular lines in C 3 .

Abstract:We show that the maximum cardinality of an equiangular line system in 14 and 16 dimensions is 28 and 40, respectively, thereby solving a longstanding open problem. We also improve the upper bounds on the cardinality of equiangular line systems in 19 and 20 dimensions to 74 and 94, respectively.

Abstract:THE classical Euclidean constructions allow only the unmarked straightedge and a pair of compasses, now commonly called “a compass.” With these limited tools we can carry through the many beautiful constructions of elementary geometry. A lack of understanding of the “rules of the game” leads to such confused and incorrect statements as “It is impossible to trisect an angle.” But of course we can trisect a right angle; and as for trisecting any angle, there is a simple and elegant construction by Plato that does this very nicely, if we allow such a slight concession as two marks on the straightedge, or even one mark and the endpoint!

Abstract:We will present a relation between real equiangular frames and certain special sets in groups which we call signature sets and show that many equiangular frames arise in this manner. Then we will define quasi-signature sets and will examine equiangular frames associated to these subsets of groups. We will extend these results to complex equiangular frames where the inner product between any pair of vectors is a common multiple of a cube root of unity and exhibit equiangular frames that arise from groups in this manner.

Abstract:We present two new constructions in the usual euclidean plane. We only deal with 'Grecian Geometry', with this phrase we mean elementary geometry in the two-dimensional space R 2 . We describe and prove two propositions about 'projections'. The proofs need only elementary analytical knowledge.

Abstract:We show that the maximum cardinality of an equiangular line system in $\mathbb R^{18}$ is at most $59$. Our proof includes a novel application of the Jacobi identity for complementary subgraphs. In particular, we show that there does not exist a graph whose adjacency matrix has characteristic polynomial $(x-22)(x-2)^{42} (x+6)^{15} (x+8)^2$.

A Finite, Feasible, Quantifier-free Foundation for Constructive Geometry

Abstract:In this paper we will develop an axiomatic foundation for the geometric study of straight edge, protractor, and compass constructions, which while being related to previous foundations, will be the first to have all axioms written and all proofs conducted in quantifier-free first order logic. All constructions within the system will be justified to be feasible by basic human faculties. No statement in the system will refer to infinitely many objects and one can posit an interpretation of the system which is in accordance to our free, creative process of geometric constructions. We are also able to capture analogous results to Euclid's work on non-planar geometry in Book XI of The Elements. This paper primarily builds on Suppes' paper Quantifier-Free Axioms for Constructive Affine Plane Geometry and draws from Beeson's article A Constructive Version of Tarski's Geometry. By further developing Suppes' work on parallel line segments, we are able to develop analogs to most theorems about parallel lines without assuming an equivalent to Euclid's Fifth Postulate which we deem as introducing non-feasible constructions. In A Constructive Version of Tarski's Geometry, Beeson defines the characteristics such a geometric foundation should have to called constructive. This work satisfies these characteristics. Additionally this work would be considered constructive as Suppes defined it.

Abstract:A set of lines in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is called equiangular if the angle between each pair of lines is the same. We derive new upper bounds on the cardinality of equiangular lines. Let us denote the maximum cardinality of equiangular lines in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with the common angle $\arccos \alpha$ by $M_{\alpha}(n)$. We prove that $M_{\frac 1 a} (n) \leq \frac 1 2 ( a^2-2) ( a^2-1)$ for any $n \in \mathbb{N}$ in the interval $a^2 -2 \leq n \leq 3 a^2-16$ and $a \geq 3$. Moreover, we discuss the relation between equiangular lines and spherical two-distance sets and we obtain the new results on the maximum spherical two-distance sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$ up to $n \leq 417$.

Equiangular lines via improved eigenvalue multiplicity

Abstract:A family of lines passing through the origin in an inner product space is said to be equiangular if every pair of lines defines the same angle. In 1973, Lemmens and Seidel raised what has since become a central question in the study of equiangular lines in Euclidean spaces. They asked for the maximum number of equiangular lines in $\mathbb{R}^r$ with a common angle of $\arccos{\frac{1}{2k-1}}$ for any integer $k \geq 2$. We show that the answer equals $r-1+\left\lfloor\frac{r-1}{k-1}\right\rfloor,$ provided that $r$ is at least exponential in a polynomial in $k$. This improves upon a recent breakthrough of Jiang, Tidor, Yao, Zhang, and Zhao [Ann. of Math. (2) 194 (2021), no. 3, 729-743], who showed that this holds for $r$ at least doubly exponential in a polynomial in $k$. We also show that for any common angle $\arccos{\alpha}$, the answer equals $r+o(r)$ already when $r$ is superpolynomial in $1/\alpha \to \infty$. The key new ingredient underlying our results is an improved upper bound on the multiplicity of the second-largest eigenvalue of a graph. In one of the regimes, this improves and significantly extends a result of McKenzie, Rasmussen, and Srivastava [STOC 2021, pp. 396-407].

On the affine geometry of congruences of lines

Abstract:Congruences, or $2$-parameter families of lines in $3$-space are of interest in many situations, in particular in geometric optics. In this paper we consider elements of their geometry which are invariant under affine changes of co-ordinates, for example that associated with their focal sets, and less well studied focal planes. We use tools from singularity theory to describe some generic phenomena. In particular we determine the generic singularities of various surfaces in affine 3-space associated to these congruences. We identify a projective quadric in the projectivised tangent space to the manifold of lines which plays a key role in understanding the affine geometry of ruled surfaces, congruences and $3$-parameter families or complexes. Many of the results generalise to lines in $\mathbb R^n, n>3$.

Abstract:In this note, we introduce a new approach to abstract ``synthetic'' projective lines. We discuss various aspects of our approach, and compare these aspects with the classical one. A number of intriguing questions arise. Amongst these aspects, we discuss geometric closures, and introduce automorphism-blocking sets. We also construct a number of (counter) examples in infinite cases.

Abstract:The classical theory of plane projective geometry is examined constructively, using both synthetic and analytic methods. The topics include Desargues's Theorem, harmonic conjugates, projectivities, involutions, conics, Pascal's Theorem, poles and polars. The axioms used for the synthetic treatment are constructive versions of the traditional axioms. The analytic construction is used to verify the consistency of the axioms; it is based on the usual model in three-dimensional Euclidean space, using only constructive properties of the real numbers. The methods of strict constructivism, following principles put forward by Errett Bishop, reveal the hidden constructive content of a portion of classical geometry. A number of open problems remain for future studies.

Equiangular tight frames from group divisible designs

Abstract:An equiangular tight frame (ETF) is a type of optimal packing of lines in a real or complex Hilbert space. In the complex case, the existence of an ETF of a given size remains an open problem in many cases. In this paper, we observe that many of the known constructions of ETFs are of one of two types. We further provide a new method for combining a given ETF of one of these two types with an appropriate group divisible design (GDD) in order to produce a larger ETF of the same type. By applying this method to known families of ETFs and GDDs, we obtain several new infinite families of ETFs. The real instances of these ETFs correspond to several new infinite families of strongly regular graphs. Our approach was inspired by a seminal paper of Davis and Jedwab which both unified and generalized McFarland and Spence difference sets. We provide combinatorial analogs of their algebraic results, unifying Steiner ETFs with hyperoval ETFs and Tremain ETFs.

Equiangular lines via matrix projection

Abstract:In 1973, Lemmens and Seidel posed the problem of determining the maximum number of equiangular lines in $\mathbb{R}^r$ with angle $\arccos(\alpha)$ and gave a partial answer in the regime $r \leq 1/\alpha^2 - 2$. At the other extreme where $r$ is at least exponential in $1/\alpha$, recent breakthroughs have led to an almost complete resolution of this problem. In this paper, we introduce a new method for obtaining upper bounds which unifies and improves upon previous approaches, thereby yielding bounds which bridge the gap between the aforementioned regimes and are best possible either exactly or up to a small multiplicative constant. Our approach relies on orthogonal projection of matrices with respect to the Frobenius inner product and as a byproduct, it yields the first extension of the Alon-Boppana theorem to dense graphs, with equality for strongly regular graphs corresponding to $\binom{r+1}{2}$ equiangular lines in $\mathbb{R}^r$. Applications of our method in the complex setting will be discussed as well.
