Abstract:Recent experiments using innovative optical detectors and techniques have strongly increased the capacity of testing the violation of the Bell's inequalities in the Nature. Most of them have used the Eberhardt's inequality (EI) to close the "detection" loophole. Closing the "locality" loophole has been attempted by space-like separated detections and fast and random changes in the setting of the bases of observation. Also, pulsed pumping and time stamped data to close the "time-coincidence" loophole, and sophisticated statistical methods to close the "memory" loophole, have been used. In this paper, the meaning of the EI is reviewed. A simple hidden-variables theory based on a relaxation of the condition of "measurement independence", which was devised long ago for the Clauser-Horne-Shimony and Holt inequality, is adapted to the EI case. It is used here to evaluate the significance of the results of the new experiments, which are briefly described. A Table summarizes the main results.

Abstract:The Mathematical Intelligencer recently published a note by Y. Sergeyev that challenges both mathematics and intelligence. We examine Sergeyev's claims concerning his purported Infinity computer. We compare his grossone system with the classical Levi-Civita fields and with the hyperreal framework of A. Robinson, and analyze the related algorithmic issues inevitably arising in any genuine computer implementation. We show that Sergeyev's grossone system is unnecessary and vague, and that whatever consistent subsystem could be salvaged is subsumed entirely within a stronger and clearer system (IST). Lou Kauffman, who published an article on a grossone, places it squarely outside the historical panorama of ideas dealing with infinity and infinitesimals.

Abstract:We analyze foundational consequences of recently announced loophole free tests of violation of Bell's inequality. We consider two interpretations of these remarkable experiments. By the conventional one "Einstein was wrong and Bohr was right, there is spooky action at a distance, quantum realism is incompatible with locality." However, we show that it is still possible to treat quantum mechanics without appealing to nonlocality or denying realism. We hope that this note will attract attention of the experts in quantum foundations and convince them to come with their own comments on the final Bell's test.

The GHSZ argument: a gedankenexperiment requiring more denken

Abstract:I reassess the gedankenexperiment of Greenberger, Horne, Shimony and Zeilinger after twenty-five years, finding their influential claim to discovery of an inconsistency inherent in high dimensional formulations of local realism to arise from a fundamental error of logic. They manage this by presuming contradictory premises: that a specific linear combination of four angles involved in their proposed parallel experiments on two pairs of electrons equals both $\pi$ and $0$ at the same time. Ignoring this while presuming the contradictory implications of these two conditions, they introduce the contradiction themselves. The notation they use in their "derivation" is not sufficiently ornate to represent the entanglement in the double electron spin pair problem they design, confounding their error. The situation they propose actually motivates only an understanding of the full array of symmetries involved in their problem. In tandem with the error now recognized in the supposed defiance of Bell's inequality by quantum probabilities, my reassessment of their work should motivate a reevaluation of the current consensus outlook regarding the principle of local realism and the proposition of hidden variables.

Abstract:The violation of Mermin's inequalities is analyzed by making use of two different Bell setups built with pseudospin operators. Employing entangled states defined by means of squeezed and coherent states, the expectation value of Mermin's polynomials $M_n$ is evaluated for $n=3$ and $n=4$. In each case, we analyze the correlator $\langle M_n \rangle$ and identify the set of parameters leading to the violation of Mermin's inequalities and to the saturation of the bound predicted by Quantum Mechanics.

Abstract:In a remarkably insightful pair of papers recently, Sica demonstrated that: dichotomic data taken in any experiment that violates Bell's inequalities ``cannot represent any data streams that could possibly exist or be imagined'' if it is to be consistent with the derivation of the inequalities.\cite{sica} The present writer maintains, however, that corrections in the formulation of Bell's analysis loosen restrictions imposed by Bell inequalities. Moreover, it is argued that the resolution proposed by Sica for the conflict arising from the fact that real data does violate Bell inequalities, namely that the functional form of the correlations considered by Bell must be amended, is untenable on physical grounds. Finally, an alternate resolution is proposed.

Breaking a Combinatorial Symmetry Resolves the Paradox of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen and Bell

Abstract:We present a Monte Carlo model of Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen experiments that may be implemented on two independent computers and resembles the measurements of the Clauser–Aspect–Zeilinger-type which are performed in two distant stations SA and SB. Our computer model is local deterministic because we show that a theorist in station SB is able to conceive the products of the measurement outcomes of both stations, conditional to any possible equipment configuration in station SA. We show that the Monte Carlo model violates Bell-type inequalities and approaches the results of quantum theory for certain relationships between the number of measurements performed and the number of possible different physical properties of the entangled photon pairs. These relationships are clearly linked to Vorob'ev cyclicities, which always enforce Bell-type inequalities. The realization of this cyclicity depends, however, on combinatorial symmetry considerations that, in turn, depend on the mathematical properties of Einstein's elements of physical reality. Because these mathematical properties have never been investigated and, therefore, may be free to be chosen in the models for all published experiments, Einstein's physics does not contradict the experimental findings, instantaneous influences at a distance are put into question and the paradox of Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen and Bell is, thus, resolved.

Abstract:A finite non-classical framework for qubit physics is described that challenges the conclusion that the Bell Inequality has been shown to have been violated experimentally, even approximately. This framework postulates the primacy of a fractal-like 'invariant set' geometry I U in cosmological state space, on which the universe evolves deterministically and causally, and from which space-time and the laws of physics in space-time are emergent. Consistent with the assumed primacy of I U , a non-Euclidean (and hence non-classical) metric g p is defined in cosmological state space. Here, p is a large but finite integer (whose inverse may reflect the weakness of gravity). Points that do not lie on I U are necessarily g p -distant from points that do. g p is related to the p-adic metric of number theory. Using number-theoretic properties of spherical triangles, the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality, whose violation would rule out local realism, is shown to be undefined in this framework. Moreover, the CHSH-like inequalities violated experimentally are shown to be g p -distant from the CHSH inequality. This result fails in the singular limit p = ∞ , at which g p is Euclidean and the corresponding model classical. Although Invariant Set Theory is deterministic and locally causal, it is not conspiratorial and does not compromise experimenter free will. The relationship between Invariant Set Theory, Bohmian Theory, The Cellular Automaton Interpretation of Quantum Theory and p-adic Quantum Theory is discussed.

An inconsistency in the CHSH inequality

Abstract:Violation of the CHSH inequality supposedly demonstrates an irreconcilable conflict between quantum mechanics and local, realistic hidden variable theories. We show that the mathematical assumptions underlying the proof of the CHSH inequality are, in fact, incompatible with the physics of the experiments testing such inequality. This implies that we cannot dismiss local realistic hidden variable theories on the basis of currently available experimental data yet. However, we also show that an experimental proof of CHSH inequality is, in principle, possible, but it is unclear how to implement, in practice, such an experiment.

The Frauchiger-Renner Gedanken Experiment: Flaws in Its Analysis -- How Logic Works in Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:In a publication (Nature Comm. 3711, 9 (2018)), Daniela Frauchiger and Renato Renner used a Wigner/friend gedanken experiment to argue that quantum mechanics cannot describe complex systems involving measuring agents. They were able to produce a contradictory statement starting with four statements about measurements performed on an entangled spin system. These statements needed to be combined using the transitive property of logic: If A implies B and B implies C, then A implies C. However, in combining successive statements for the Frauchiger-Renner gedanken experiment we show that quantum mechanics does not obey transitivity and that this invalidates their analysis. We also demonstrate that certain pairs of premises among the four statements are logically incompatible, meaning that the statements cannot all be used at once. In addition, to produce the contradiction, Frauchiger and Renner choose a particular run, which they call the `OK' -- `OKbar' one. However, the restriction to this case invalidates three of the four statements. Hence, there are three separate problems with logic in the 2018 Nature Communication publication. We also demonstrate the violation of the rules of logic -- including transitivity -- in certain situations in quantum mechanics in general. We use the Frauchiger-Renner gedanken experiment as a laboratory to explore a number of topics in quantum mechanics including wavefunction logic, Wigner/friend experiments, and the deduction of mathematical statements from knowledge of a wavefunction and obtain a number of interesting results. We show that Wigner/friend experiments of the type used by Frauchiger and Renner are impossible if the Wigner measurements are performed on macroscopic objects. Abstract:Violation of Leggett-Garg inequalities allows proof of the incompatibility between quantum mechanics and the combined premises (called macrorealism) of macroscopic realism (MR) and non-invasive measurability (NIM). Arguments can be given that the incompatibility arises because MR fails $-$ or else, that NIM fails. In this paper, we consider a strong failure of macrorealism, involving superpositions of coherent states, where the NIM premise is replaced by Bell-locality. We follow recent work and propose validity of a subset of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) and Leggett-Garg premises, referred to as \emph{weak macroscopic realism} (wMR). In finding consistency with wMR, we identify that the Leggett-Garg inequalities are violated because of failure of both MR and NIM, but also that both are valid in a less restrictive sense. Weak MR is distinguished from \emph{deterministic macroscopic realism} (dMR) by recognizing that a measurement involves a reversible unitary interaction that establishes the measurement setting. Weak MR posits a predetermined value for the measurement outcome, for the system defined at the time after the interaction, when the measurement setting is experimentally specified. An extended definition of wMR considers the element of reality defined by EPR for a system A, where one can predict with certainty the outcome of a measurement on A, by measurement on a system B. Weak MR posits that the element of reality exists once the unitary interaction determining the setting at B has occurred. We show compatibility of systems violating Leggett-Garg inequalities with wMR, but point out that dMR is falsifiable. We compare with other MR models, and give an argument for wMR on the basis that wMR resolves inconsistencies pointed out by Leggett and Garg between failure of macrorealism and assumptions intrinsic to quantum measurement theory.

Abstract:I point out critical errors in the paper "Dr. Bertlmann's Socks in a Quaternionic World of Ambidextral Reality" by Joy~Christian, published in IEEE Access. Christian's model does not generate the singlet correlations but in fact simply reproduces the Bertlmann effect. John Bell's friend and colleague Reinhold Bertlmann of CERN, in his younger days, always wore one pink and one blue sock, at random. The moment you saw his left foot, you knew what colour sock would be on his right foot. Action at a distance? As John Bell liked to explain, quantum entanglement cannot be explained away in such an easy way. Yet Christian's model assigns the two particles of the EPR-B experiment an equal and opposite spin at the source, the choice being determined by a fair coin toss. However they are measured, these spins are recovered. Christian's computer simulation works by not actually simulating his model at all but by almost directly tracing the negative cosine built into his computer algebra package. Bell's theorem has not been disproved. Debate as to what it means for the foundations of physics as well as for quantum information engineering (quantum communication, computation) is more lively today than ever before. Christian's paper, alas, does not contribute to the debate, but distracts from it. A possible role for Geometric Algebra is still wide open and deserves further investigation, informed by a proper understanding of the mathematical content of Bell's theorem.

Abstract:We assess the analysis made by Bohr in 1935 of the Einstein Podolsky Rosen paradox/theorem. We explicitly describe Bohr's gedanken experiment involving a double-slit moving diaphragm interacting with two independent particles and show that the analysis provided by Bohr was flawed. We propose a different protocol correcting Bohr's version that confirms EPR dilemma: Quantum mechanics is either incomplete or non-local.

Reinterpreting Quantum Probabilities in a Realistic and Local Framework: The Modified BCHSH Inequalities

Abstract:Most physicists uphold that the tests of the Bell inequalities (BI) performed up to now confirm the predictions of standard quantum mechanics (SQM) and refute local realism. But some scholars criticize this conviction, defending local realism in various ways. We present here a new viewpoint based on an improved version of the extended semantic realism (ESR) model that has been recently worked out by one of the authors. The ESR model embodies the mathematical formalism of SQM into a more general framework in which not only local realism but also objectivity of physical properties holds, and the probabilities of SQM are reinterpreted as conditional instead of absolute. Hence the ESR model provides some predictions that are formally identical to those of SQM but have a different physical interpretation, and further predictions that differ also formally from those of SQM. In particular, we show here that the BI introduced by Clauser, Horne, Shimony and Holt (BCHSH inequalities) must be replaced by modified BCHSH inequalities. These depend on detection probabilities which may be such that the new inequalities are never violated by the conditional expectation values predicted by the model. The condition that no violation occurs implies the existence of upper bounds on detection probabilities, which makes the ESR model falsifiable. These results admit an intuitive explanation in terms of unfair sampling but basically differ from the seemingly similar results obtained by other approaches in which the efficiency problem is discussed in order to vindicate some kind of local realism.

The Bell experiment; an epistemological approach

Abstract:The Nobel prize in physics for 2022 was given for performing Bell experiments with varying degree of sophistication. The interpretation of this experiment is discussed by first recalling Bell's simple argument behind his inequalities, in particular the CHSH inequality. It is argued that any independent observer must have a limitation: He is not able to keep all relevant variables in his mind at the same time when trying to model the experiment. This is contrasted to the solution proposed by Tim Maudlin, where nonlocality is <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://crucial.Maudlin" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> criticizes the Nobel price committee, but this critique is countered. Finally, a related new approach to the foundation of quantum mechanics is briefly sketched, giving references to the relevant literature.

Abstract:We report on measurements of 11-18 cm wavelength radio emission from interactions of 15.2 MeV pulsed electron bunches at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator. The electrons were observed both in a configuration where they produced primarily transition radiation from an aluminum foil, and in a configuration designed for the electrons to produce Cherenkov radiation in a silica sand target. Our aim was to emulate the large electron excess expected to develop during an electromagnetic cascade initiated by an ultra high-energy particle. Such charge asymmetries are predicted to produce strong coherent radio pulses, which are the basis for several experiments to detect high-energy neutrinos from the showers they induce in Antarctic ice and in the lunar regolith. We detected coherent emission which we attribute both to transition and possibly Cherenkov radiation at different levels depending on the experimental conditions. We discuss implications for experiments relying on radio emission for detection of electromagnetic cascades produced by ultra high-energy neutrinos.

Abstract:The purpose of this comment is to show that a reinterpretation of the results from the Letter: "Physics and Metaphysics of Wigner's Friends: Even performed pre-measurements have no results" allows for reaching the conclusion "pre-measurements have no resul" [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2003.07464" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.07464">arXiv:2003.07464</a>] based only on postulates of quantum mechanics without additional assumptions on irreversibility. Additionally, with supplementary reasoning based on Bell's theorem, one can show that unitary decoherence cannot be solely responsible for the quantum-to-classical transition, and an additional irreversibility model is required for its full description. Consequently, the black hole information paradox has no physical basis.

Abstract:We propose an experiment that allows one to test the Einstein's intuitive objection to Bohr's quantum mechanics (QM), which was that if QM is correct, then there should be a nonlocality related to the collapse of a single-particle macroscopic wavefunction, which by no means is compatible with special relativity. The idea of the experiment is related to the so-called integer quantum Hall (IQH) systems known to have macroscopic quantum orbits often called extended states. The experiment appeared realizable in a modified IQH system and we have found that a single-particle nonlocality does exist precisely as it follows from QM. This fact makes one come back to the Bell-Popper idea to revive the Lorentz-Poincare "dynamic" version of relativity together with the classical concept of space and time. But now, if to add the single-particle nonlocality to the Bohm-Hiley model of undivided universe, one can solve the most formidable problem - to find a preferred reference frame without involving the vague notion "aether". Moreover, now one can adopt a deeper-than-relativistic concept of what we call "reality", which opens the door to a realistic interpretation of QM and, after all, to the awareness of the worldview of this extremely successful theory.
