Abstract:Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and CO 2 Enhanced Oil Recovery (CO 2 -EOR) are crucial in reducing CO 2 emissions. They focus on both climate change mitigation and enhance oil recovery by injecting CO 2 . A key aspect of CCS and CO 2 -EOR is the control of CO 2 flow. Influenced by reservoir heterogeneity, gas/liquid viscosity differences, and gravitational segregation, CO 2 flow control face challenges. Chemical agents, primarily gels and foams, are used to plug major flow channels and enhance the conformance of CO 2 front in reservoirs. However, only one or a few materials discussed in existing reviews and the comparisons between different systems are missed. For better application of chemical agents, a comprehensive discussion of factors affecting performances of gels and foams, a summary of the advantages and disadvantages of different agents, and results in core flow experiments are given in this review. Innovatively, the mechanisms and performances of the incorporating of nanoparticles in gel and foam systems are investigated, and the maturity of flow control agents are assessed according to TRL criteria. The results show that common gels and foams are still the current agents in flow control with rich experiences and economy. Nevertheless, special agents, especially those with CO 2 responsiveness, exhibit outstanding performances in CO 2 flow control while lacking of maturity. Other agents, the self-assembled gel or polymer enhanced foams, certainly viable in some cases, but their drawbacks are obvious. Therefore, the further researches are required in special agents. For the synergistic use of nanoparticles, enhanced performances of foams and gels are demonstrated by introducing nanoparticles, but the long-term effects and removal methods of nanoparticles are missing.
