Abstract:Bankwitz characterized the alternating diagrams of the trivial knot. A non‐alternating diagram is called almost alternating if one crossing change makes the diagram alternating. We characterize the almost alternating diagrams of the trivial knot. As a corollary, we determine the unknotting number one alternating knots with the property that the unknotting operation can be done on its alternating diagram.

Abstract:We give a topological characterisation of alternating knot exteriors based on the presence of special spanning surfaces. This shows that alternating is a topological property of the knot exterior and not just a property of diagrams, answering an old question of Fox. We also give a characterisation of alternating link exteriors which have marked meridians. We then describe a normal surface algorithm which can decide if a knot is prime and alternating given a triangulation of its exterior as input.

Abstract:We establish a characterization of alternating links in terms of definite spanning surfaces. We apply it to obtain a new proof of Tait's conjecture that reduced alternating diagrams of the same link have the same crossing number and writhe. We also deduce a result of Banks and Hirasawa-Sakuma about Seifert surfaces for special alternating links. The appendix, written by Juhász and Lackenby, applies the characterization to derive an exponential time algorithm for alternating knot recognition.

Abstract:We prove a simple necessary and sufficient condition for a two-bridge knot K(p,q) to be quasipositive, based on the continued fraction expansion of p/q. As an application, coupled with some classification results in contact and symplectic topology, we give a new proof of the fact that smoothly slice two-bridge knots are non-quasipositive. Another proof of this fact using methods within the scope of knot theory is presented in the Appendix.

Abstract:We show that a special alternating knot with sufficiently large number (more than $63$) of twist regions has no chirally cosmetic surgeries, a pair of Dehn surgeries producing orientation-reversingly homeomorphic $3$-manifolds. In the course of proof, we provide the optimal upper bounds of the primitive finite type invariants of degree 2 and 3 that solve Willerton's conjecture.

Abstract:Link equivalence up to isotopy in a 3-space is the problem that lies at the root of knot theory, and is important in 3-dimensional topology and geometry. We consider its restriction to alternating links, given by two alternating diagrams with $n_1$ and $n_2$ crossings, and show that this problem has polynomial algorithm in terms of $max\{n_1, n_2\}$. For the proof, we use Tait flyping conjectures, observations from the work of Lackenby, Menasco, Sundberg and Thistlethwaite on alternating links, and algorithmic complexity of some problems from graph theory and topological graph theory.

Abstract:An alternating distance is a link invariant that measures how far away a link is from alternating. We study several alternating distances and demonstrate that there exist families of links for which the difference between certain alternating distances is arbitrarily large. We also show that two alternating distances, the alternation number and the alternating genus, are not comparable.

Abstract:In 2010, Turaev introduced knotoids as a variation on knots that replaces the embedding of a circle with the embedding of a closed interval with two endpoints which here we call poles. We define generalised knotoids to allow arbitrarily many poles, intervals and circles, each pole corresponding to any number of interval endpoints, including zero. This theory subsumes a variety of other related topological objects and introduces some particularly interesting new cases. We explore various analogs of knotoid invariants, including height, index polynomials, bracket polynomials and hyperbolicity. We further generalise to knotoidal graphs, which are a natural extension of spatial graphs that allow both poles and vertices.

Non-integer characterizing slopes and knot Floer homology

Abstract:Conjecturally, a knot in the 3-sphere has only finitely many non-integer non-characterizing slopes. We verify this conjecture for all knots with knot Floer homology satisfying certain simplicity conditions. The class of knots satisfying our notion of simplicity includes alternating knots, $L$-space knots and the vast majority of knots with at most 12 crossings. For arbitrary knots in the 3-sphere we show that almost all slopes $p/q$ with $|q|\geq 3$ are characterizing. In addition, we show that all $L$-space knots and almost $L$-space knots have infinitely many integer characterizing slopes.

Abstract:The notion of almost alternating links was introduced by C. Adams et al ([1]). We give a sufficient condition for an almost alternating link diagram to represent a non-splittable link. This solves a question asked in [1, 3]. A partial solution for special almost alternating links has been obtained by M. Hirasawa ([5]). As an application, Theorem 2.2 gives us a simple finite algorithm to decide if a given almost alternating link diagram represents a splittable link without increasing the number of crossings of diagrams in the process. Moreover, we show that almost alternating links with more than two components are non-trivial. In Section 2, we state these results in detail. To prove our theorem, we use a technique invented by W. Menasco (see [6, 7]), this is reviewed in Section 3. We also apply “the charge and discharge method” to our graph-theoretic argument, which was used to prove the four color theorem in [4], we explain this in Section 4.

Abstract:A homogeneous knot is a generalization of alternating knots and positive knots. We determine the Rasmussen invariant of a homogeneous knot. This is a new class of knots such that the Rasmussen invariant is explicitly described in terms of its diagrams. As a corollary, we obtain some characterizations of a positive knot. In particular, we recover Baader's theorem which states that a knot is positive if and only if it is homogeneous and strongly quasipositive.

Abstract:In this article, we characterize joint completely alternating nets in terms of joint completely monotonic nets. We also discuss completely alternating sequences induced by a class of rational functions. Using the elementary techniques, we obtain a set of conditions sufficient to determine completely alternating sequences interpolated by a class of rational functions. As an application, we obtain a complete characterization of several classes of joint completely monotonic nets induced by rational functions in two variables.

Abstract:Heegaard Floer homology and knot Floer homology are powerful invariants of 3-manifolds and links respectively. L-space knots are knots which admit Dehn surgeries to 3-manifolds with Heegaard Floer homology of minimal rank. In this paper we study almost L-space knots, which are knots admitting large Dehn surgeries to 3-manifolds with Heegaard Floer homology of next-to-minimal rank. Our main result is a classification of the $CFK^\infty$ type of almost L-space knots. As corollaries we show that almost L-space knots satisfy various topological properties, including some given by Baldwin-Sivek. We also give some new cable link detection results.

Abstract:Given a knot K in S^3, let u^-(K) (respectively, u^+(K)) denote the minimum number of negative (respectively, positive) crossing changes among all unknotting sequences for K. We use knot Floer homology to construct the invariants l^-(K), l^+(K) and l(K), which give lower bounds on u^-(K), u^+(K) and the unknotting number u(K), respectively. The invariant l(K) only vanishes for the unknot, and is greater than or equal to the \nu^-(K). Moreover, the difference l(K)-\nu^-(K) can be arbitrarily large. We also present several applications towards bounding the unknotting number, the alteration number and the Gordian distance.

Abstract:We give a complete classification of toroidal Seifert fibered surgeries on alternating knots. Precisely, we show that if an alternating knot admits a toroidal Seifert fibered surgery, then the knot is either the trefoil knot and the surgery slope is zero, or the connected sum of a (2,p)-torus knot and a (2,q)-torus knot and the surgery slope is 2(p+q) with |p|, |q| at least three.

Abstract:Given a reduced alternating diagram for a link, we obtain conditions that guarantee that the link complement has a complete hyperbolic structure, crossing arcs are the edges of an ideal geodesic triangulation, and every crossing arc is isotopic to a simple geodesic. The latter was conjectured by Sakuma and Weeks in 1995. We provide infinite families of closed braids for which our conditions hold.
