Abstract:We report on ASCA energy spectra of Cir X-1 taken near its zero phase on 1994 August 4-5. The ASCA SIS detectors allow a more detailed study of the iron K complex than has been possible before. We find that prior to a sudden upward flux transition the dominant iron K feature appears to consist of a large edge from neutral or nearly-neutral iron. The depth of the edge corresponds to an absorption column of about 1.5E24 cm^{-2}, while little absorption over that expected from the Galaxy is seen at lower X-ray energies. The differential absorption at high and low X-ray energies combined with the iron edge energy are strong evidence that partial covering is a crucial determinant of the behaviour observed from Cir X-1. The continuum spectral variability observed by ASCA can also be understood naturally in terms of partial covering column changes. There is evidence for a relatively weak emission line from neutral iron with an equivalent width of only about 65 eV. After the flux transition, the strength of the edge feature is greatly reduced, suggesting a large reduction in the amount of partial covering. For a large region of statistically acceptable chi-squared parameter space, the luminosity of Cir X-1, after correction for partial covering, need not change during the transition. We discuss models for the partial covering and suggest that X-ray scattering by electrons may be important. Aspects of the Cir X-1 spectrum are very similar to those of Seyfert 2 galaxies with Compton-thin tori.

Abstract:The topological underpinnings are presented for a new algorithm which answers the question: `Is a given knot the unknot?' The algorithm uses the braid foliation technology of Bennequin and of Birman and Menasco. The approach is to consider the knot as a closed braid, and to use the fact that a knot is unknotted if and only if it is the boundary of a disc with a combinatorial foliation. The main problems which are solved in this paper are: how to systematically enumerate combinatorial braid foliations of a disc; how to verify whether a combinatorial foliation can be realized by an embedded disc; how to find a word in the the braid group whose conjugacy class represents the boundary of the embedded disc; how to check whether the given knot is isotopic to one of the enumerated examples; and finally, how to know when we can stop checking and be sure that our example is not the unknot.

Abstract:This paper gives new and elementary combinatorial topological proofs of the classification of unoriented and oriented rational knots and links. These proofs are based on the known classification of alternating knots through flyping, and the calculus of continued fractions. We characterize the class of strongly invertible rational links. Rational links are of fundamental importance in the study of DNA recombination.

Abstract:All knots have been shown to be isotopic to the unknot using a process known as virtualization. We extend and adapt this process to show that, up to fused isotopy, classical links are classified by their linking numbers. We provide an algebraic proof, utilizing Alexander’s Theorem and some simple results about the pure braid group.

Abstract:Both classical and virtual knots arise as formal Gauss diagrams modulo some abstract moves corresponding to Reidemeister moves. If we forget about both over/under crossings structure and writhe numbers of knots modulo the same Reidemeister moves, we get a dramatic simplification of virtual knots, which kills all classical knots. However, many virtual knots survive after this simplification. We construct invariants of these objects and present their applications to minimality problems of virtual knots as well as some questions related to graph-links. One can easily generalize these results for the orientable case and apply them for solving non-invertibility problems. The main idea behind these invariants is some geometrical construction which reduces the general equivalence to the equivalence only modulo Reidemeister - 2 move.

Abstract:This paper builds a novel bridge between algebraic coding theory and mathematical knot theory, with applications in both directions. We give methods to construct error-correcting codes starting from the colorings of a knot, describing through a series of results how the properties of the knot translate into code parameters. We show that knots can be used to obtain error-correcting codes with prescribed parameters and an efficient decoding algorithm.

A classification of symmetries of knots

Abstract:We classify all finite group actions on knots in the 3-sphere. By geometrization, all such actions are conjugate to actions by isometries, and so we may use orthogonal representation theory to describe three cyclic and seven dihedral families of symmetries. By constructing examples, we prove that all of the cyclic and four of the dihedral families arise as symmetries of prime knots. The remaining three dihedral families apply only to composite knots. We also explain how to distinguish different types of symmetries of knots using diagrammatic or topological data. Our classification immediately implies a previous result of Sakuma: a hyperbolic knot cannot be both freely periodic and amphichiral. In passing, we establish two technical results: one concerning finite cyclic or dihedral subgroups of isometries of the 3-sphere and another concerning linking numbers of symmetric knots.

Abstract:Knots are deeply entangled with every branch of science. One of the biggest open challenges in knot theory is to formalise a knot invariant that can unambiguously and efficiently distinguish any two knotted curves. Additionally, the conjecture that the geometrical embedding of a curve encodes information on its underlying topology is, albeit physically intuitive, far from proven. Here we attempt to tackle both these outstanding challenges by proposing a neural network (NN) approach that takes as input a geometric representation of a knotted curve and tries to make predictions of the curve's topology. Intriguingly, we discover that NNs trained with a so-called geometrical "local writhe" representation of a knot can distinguish curves that share one or many topological invariants and knot polynomials, such as mutant and composite knots, and can thus classify knotted curves more precisely than some knot polynomials. Additionally, we also show that our approach can be scaled up to classify all prime knots up to 10-crossings with more than 95\% accuracy. Finally, we show that our NNs can also be trained to solve knot localisation problems on open and closed curves. Our main discovery is that the pattern of "local writhe" is a potentially unique geometric signature of the underlying topology of a curve. We hope that our results will suggest new methods for quantifying generic entanglements in soft matter and even inform new topological invariants.

Abstract:We construct two complete invariants of oriented classical knots in space. The value of each invariant on any knot is a set, infinite for the first invariant and finite for the second. The finite set is computed algorithmically from any knot diagram in a finite number of steps. The algorithm reveals the knotting number of the knot as well.

Abstract:This manuscript introduces a new framework for the study of knots by exploring the neighborhood of knot embeddings in the space of simple open and closed curves in 3-space. The latter gives rise to a knotoid spectrum, which determines the knot type via its knot-type knotoids. We prove that the pure knotoids in the knotoid spectra of a knot, which are individually agnostic of the knot type, can distinguish knots of Gordian distance greater than one. We also prove that the neighborhood of some embeddings of the unknot can be distinguished from any embedding of any non-trivial knot that satisfies the cosmetic crossing conjecture. Topological invariants of knots can be extended to their open curve neighborhood to define continuous functions in the neighborhood of knots. We discuss their properties and prove that invariants in the neighborhood of knots may be able to distinguish more knots than their application to the knots themselves. For example, we prove that an invariant of knots that fails to distinguish mutant knots (and mutant knotoids), can distinguish them by their neighborhoods, unless it also fails to distinguish non-mutant pure knotoids in their spectra. Studying the neighborhood of knots opens the possibility of answering questions, such as if an invariant can detect the unknot, via examining possibly easier questions, such as whether it can distinguish height one knotoids from the trivial knotoid.

Abstract:In 2010, Turaev introduced knotoids as a variation on knots that replaces the embedding of a circle with the embedding of a closed interval with two endpoints which here we call poles. We define generalised knotoids to allow arbitrarily many poles, intervals and circles, each pole corresponding to any number of interval endpoints, including zero. This theory subsumes a variety of other related topological objects and introduces some particularly interesting new cases. We explore various analogs of knotoid invariants, including height, index polynomials, bracket polynomials and hyperbolicity. We further generalise to knotoidal graphs, which are a natural extension of spatial graphs that allow both poles and vertices.

FlatKnotInfo: the first 1.24 million flat knots

Abstract:We use matchings on Lyndon words to classify flat knots up to 8 crossings. Using flat knots invariants such as the based matrix, the $\phi$-invariant, the flat arrow polynomial, and the flat Jones-Krushkal polynomial, we distinguish all flat knots up to 7 crossings except for five pairs. Among the many flat knots considered, we find examples that are: (i) algebraically slice but not slice; (ii) almost classical (null-homologous) but not slice; (iii) nontrivial but with trivial (primitive) based matrix. The classification data has been curated and is available on FlatKnotInfo, which is an interactive searchable website listing flat knots up to 8 crossings and their invariants. It also provides access to algebraic and diagrammatic information on these knots and is designed to enable users to discover patterns and formulate conjectures on their own.

Classification of small links in the unmarked solid torus

Abstract:We introduce a framework to analyze knots and links in an unmarked solid torus. We discuss invariants that detect when such links are equivalent under an ambient homeomorphism, and show that the multivariable Alexander polynomial is such in invariant. We compute, for links with low wrapping number, bounds on the degree of a Dehn twist needed to transform one into the other that depend on the dichromatic Kauffman polynomial. Finally, we use this to give a classification of all non-split links up to 6 crossings in the unmarked solid torus.

Abstract:These notes are based on the lectures given by the author during Winter Braids IX in Reims in March 2019. We discuss slice knots and why they are interesting, as well as some ways to decide if a given knot is or is not slice. We describe various methods for drawing diagrams of double branched covers of knots in the 3-sphere and surfaces in the 4-ball, and how these can be useful to decide if an alternating knot is slice. We include a description of the computer search for slice alternating knots due to the author and Frank Swenton.

Abstract:Classical knot theory deals with {\em diagrams} and {\em invariants}. By means of horizontal {\em trisecants}, we construct a new theory of classical braids with invariants valued in {\em pictures}. These pictures are closely related to diagrams of the initial object. The main tool is the notion of {\em free $k$-braid group}. In the simplest case, for free $2$-braids, the word problem and the conjugacy problem can be solved by finding the minimal representative, which can be thought of as a graph, and is unique, as such. We prove a general theorem about invariants of dynamical systems which are valued in such groups and hence, in pictures. We describe various applications of the above theory: invariants of weavings (collections of skew lines in $\R^{3}$), and many other objects in geometry and topology. In general, provided that for some topological objects (considered up to isotopy, homotopy etc) some easy axioms (coming from some dimensional constraints) hold, one can construct similar dynamical systems and picture-valued invariants.

Abstract:We prove that each overtwisted contact structure has knot types that are represented by infinitely many distinct transverse knots all with the same self-linking number. In some cases, we can even classify all such knots. We also show similar results for Legendrian knots and prove a "folk" result concerning loose transverse and Legendrian knots (that is knots with overtwisted complements) which says that such knots are determined by their classical invariants (up to contactomorphism). Finally we discuss how these results partially fill in our understanding of the "geography" and "botany"' problems for Legendrian knots in overtwisted contact structures, as well as many open questions regarding these problems.

Abstract:We construct an algorithm to decide whether two given Legendrian or transverse links are equivalent. In general, the complexity of the algorithm is too high for practical implementation. However, in many cases, when the symmetry group of the link is small and explicitly known, the most time-consuming part of the algorithm can be bypassed, thus allowing one to compare many pairs of Legendrian and transverse links in practice.

Abstract:Knot theory is a branch of topology in pure mathematics, however, it has been increasingly used in different sciences such as chemistry. Mathematically, a knot is a subset of three-dimensional space which is homeomorphic to a circle and it is only defined in a closed loop. In chemistry, knots have been applied to synthetic molecular design. Mathematics and chemistry together can work to determine, characterize and create knots which help to understand different molecular designs and then forecast their physical features. In this study, we provide an introduction to the knot theory and its topological concepts, and then we extend it to the context of chemistry. We present parametric representations for several synthetic knots. The main goal of this paper is to develop a geometric and topological intuition for molecular knots using parametric equations. Since parameterizations are non-unique; there is more than one set of parametric equations to specify the same molecular knots. This parametric representation can be used easily to express geometrically molecular knots and would be helpful to find out more complicated molecular models.
