Abstract:Among non-alternating knots with $n\le 12$ crossings given in \cite{1} Turaev genus is not known for 191 knot. For 154 of them we show that they are almost alternating, so their Turaev genus is 1.

Abstract:The non-orientable 4-genus of a knot K in the three sphere is defined to be the minimum first Betti number of a non-orientable surface F in the four-ball so that K bounds F. We will survey the tools used to compute the non-orientable 4-genus, and use various techniques to calculate this invariant for non-alternating 11 crossing knots. We also will view obstructions to a knot bounding a Möbius band given by the double branched cover of the three sphere branched over K.

Abstract:The Turaev surface of a link diagram D is a closed, oriented surface constructed from a cobordism between the all-A and all-B Kauffman states of D. The Turaev genus of a link L is the minimum genus of the Turaev surface of any diagram D of L. A link is alternating if and only if its Turaev genus is zero, and so one can view Turaev genus one links as being close to alternating links. In this paper, we study the Khovanov homology of a Turaev genus one link in the first and last two polynomial gradings where the homology is nontrivial. We show that a particular summand in the Khovanov homology of a Turaev genus one link is trivial. This trivial summand leads to a computation of the Rasmussen s invariant and to bounds on the smooth four genus for certain Turaev genus one knots.

Abstract:The genus non-increasing totally positive unknotting number is the minimum number of crossing changes that transform a knot into the unknot, such that all the crossing changes are positive-to-negative crossing changes that do not increase the genus. We show that the genus non-increasing totally positive unknotting number can be arbitrary large for genus one knots.

Abstract:Bankwitz characterized the alternating diagrams of the trivial knot. A non‐alternating diagram is called almost alternating if one crossing change makes the diagram alternating. We characterize the almost alternating diagrams of the trivial knot. As a corollary, we determine the unknotting number one alternating knots with the property that the unknotting operation can be done on its alternating diagram.

Abstract:The algebraic genus of a knot is an invariant that arises when one considers upper bounds for the topological slice genus coming from Freedman’s theorem that Alexander polynomial one knots are topologically slice. This paper develops null-homologous twisting operations as a tool for studying the algebraic genus and, consequently, for bounding the topological slice genus above. As applications we give new upper bounds on the algebraic genera of torus knots and satellite knots.

Abstract:We show that for genus one knots the Alexander polynomial and the homology of the double cover branching over the knot provide obstructions to cosmetic crossings. As an application we prove the nugatory crossing conjecture for the negatively twisted, positive Whitehead doubles of all knots. We also verify the conjecture for several families of pretzel knots and all genus one knots with up to 10 crossings.

Abstract:The unknotting number $u$ and the genus $g$ of braid positive knots are equal, as shown by Rudolph. We prove the stronger statement that any positive braid diagram of a genus $g$ knot contains $g$ crossings, such that changing them produces a diagram of the trivial knot. Then, we turn to unknotting the more general class of fibered positive knots, for which $u = g$ was conjectured by Stoimenow. We prove that the known ways to unknot braid positive knots do not generalize to fibered positive knots. Namely, we prove that there are fibered positive knots that cannot be unknotted optimally along fibered positive knots; there are fibered positive knots that do not arise as trefoil plumbings; and there are positive diagrams of fibered positive knots of genus $g$ that do not contain $g$ crossings, such that changing them produces a diagram of the trivial knot. In fact, we conjecture that one of our examples is a counterexample to Stoimenow's conjecture.

Abstract:We show that the torsion order $\mathrm{Ord}(K)$ of a knot $K$ in knot Floer homology gives a lower bound on the minimum number $n$ such that an oriented $(n+1)$-tangle replacement unknots $K$. This generalizes earlier results by Alishahi and the author and by Juhasz, Miller and Zemke, that $\mathrm{Ord}(K)$ is a lower bound for both the unknotting number $u(K)$ and for $br(K)-1$, where $br(K)$ denotes the bridge index of $K$.

Abstract:We calculate the alternating number of torus knots with braid index 4 and less. For the lower bound, we use the upsilon-invariant recently introduced by Ozsv\'ath, Stipsicz, and Szab\'o. For the upper bound, we use a known bound for braid index $3$ and a new bound for braid index $4$. Both bounds coincide, so that we obtain a sharp result.

Abstract:We give an obstruction for genus one knots $K$, $K'$ to have the Gordian distance one by using the $0$th coefficient of the HOMFLT polynomials. As an application, we give a new constraint for genus one knot to admit a (generalized) cosmetic crossing. Combining known results, we prove the (generalized) cosmetic crossing conjecture for genus one pretzel knots.

Abstract:We show that the order of torsion homology classes in Bar-Natan deformation of Khovanov homology is a lower bound for the unknotting number. We give examples of knots that this is a better lower bound than |s(K)/2|, where s(K) is the Rasmussen s invariant defined by the Bar-Natan spectral sequence.

Abstract:We exhibit an infinite family of knots with isomorphic knot Heegaard Floer homology. Each knot in this infinite family admits a nontrivial genus two mutant which shares the same total dimension in both knot Floer homology and Khovanov homology. Each knot is distinguished from its genus two mutant by both knot Floer homology and Khovanov homology as bigraded groups. Additionally, for both knot Heegaard Floer homology and Khovanov homology, the genus two mutation interchanges the groups in $\delta$-gradings $k$ and $-k$.

Abstract:We show that a special alternating knot with sufficiently large number (more than $63$) of twist regions has no chirally cosmetic surgeries, a pair of Dehn surgeries producing orientation-reversingly homeomorphic $3$-manifolds. In the course of proof, we provide the optimal upper bounds of the primitive finite type invariants of degree 2 and 3 that solve Willerton's conjecture.

Abstract:Ito-Takimura recently defined a splice-unknotting number $u^-(D)$ for knot diagrams. They proved that this number provides an upper bound for the crosscap number of any prime knot, asking whether equality holds in the alternating case. We answer their question in the affirmative. (Ito has independently proven the same result.) As an application, we compute the crosscap numbers of all prime alternating knots through at least 13 crossings, using Gauss codes.

Abstract:There are 46,972 prime knots with crossing number 14. Among them 19,536 are alternating and have arc index 16. Among the non-alternating knots, 17, 477, and 3,180 have arc index 10, 11, and 12, respectively. The remaining 23,762 have arc index 13 or 14. There are none with arc index smaller than 10 or larger than 14. We used the Dowker-Thistlethwaite code of the 23,762 knots provided by the program Knotscape to locate non-alternating edges in their diagrams. Our method requires at least six non-alternating edges to find arc presentations with 13 arcs. We obtained 8,027 knots having arc index 13. We show them by their minimal grid diagrams. The remaining 15,735 prime non-alternating 14 crossing knots have arc index 14 as determined by the lower bound obtained from the Kauffman polynomial.

Abstract:Marino's conjecture remains underexplored within the framework of $SO(N )$ string dualities. In this article, we investigated the reformulated invariants of a one-parameter family of knots $\left[ K\right]_p$ derived from tangle surgery on Manolescu's quasi-alternating knot diagrams. Within topological string dualities, we have verified Marino's integrality conjecture for these families of knots up to the Young diagram representation ${\bf R}$, with ${|\bf R|}\leq 2$. Furthermore, through our analysis, we have conjectured the closed structure of extremal refined BPS integers for the torus knots $ \left[{\bf 3_1}\right]_{2p+1}$ and $ \left[{\bf 8_{20}}\right]_{2p+1}$, $p \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$. As the parameter $p$ of the knot diagram increases, the total crossing number of a knot exceeds $16$, which we describe as a complex knot. Interestingly, we discovered a maximum number of gaps in the BPS spectra associated with complex knot families. Moreover, our observations indicated that as $p$ increases, the size of these gaps also expands.

Abstract:A knot is a closed loop in space without self-intersection. Two knots are equivalent if there is a self homeomorphism of space bringing one onto the other. An arc presentation is an embedding of a knot in the union of finitely many half planes with a common boundary line such that each half plane contains a simple arc of the knot. The minimal number of such half planes among all arc presentations of a given knot is called the arc index of the knot. A knot is usually presented as a planar diagram with finitely many crossings of two strands where one of the strands goes over the other. A grid diagram is a planar diagram which is a non-simple rectilinear polygon such that vertical edges always cross over horizontal edges at all crossings. It is easily seen that an arc presentation gives rise to a grid diagram and vice versa. It is known that the arc index of an alternating knot is two plus its minimal crossing number. There are 4878 prime alternating knots with minimal crossing number 13. We obtained minimal arc presentations of them in the form of grid diagrams having 15 vertical segments. This is a continuation of the works on prime alternating knots of 11 crossings and 12 crossings.

Abstract:By examining the homology groups of a 4-manifold associated to an integral surgery on a knot $K$ in a rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ yielding a rational homology 3-sphere $Y^*$ with surgery dual knot $K^*$, we show that the subgroups generated by $[K]$ and $[K^*]$ in $H_1(Y)$ and $H_1(Y^*)$, respectively, have co-prime orders. We obtain an immediate corollary that, in conjunction with an argument of Lidman and Moore, proves the cosmetic crossing conjecture for knots whose branched double covers are Heegaard Floer L-spaces.
