Abstract:Replicated an earlier study by the present author and colleagues (see record 1984-14773-001) on self-attribution and dimensions of self-concept. 559 Australian 5th graders were assessed for (1) multiple dimensions of self-attribution for causes of academic outcomes,(2) multiple dimensions of self-concept,(3) multiple dimensions of inferred self-concept (by teachers and peers), and (4) achievements in reading and mathematics. Results show that the empirically derived dimensions of academic self-attribution yielded findings similar to the earlier study—no bipolar dimensions (eg, internal–external) were found. Abstract:Academic abilities were substantially correlated with academic self-concept for Year 6 students (n = 305), but were uncorrelated with non-academic self-concepts. Schools for this study were specifically chosen to represent the highest and lowest strata of socioeconomic status (SES) within the same geographical area, and students from the high-SES schools were substantially higher in family SES, reading ability, IQ, and teacher ratings of academic ability. Nevertheless, students from the high-SES schools had paradoxically lower academic self-concepts after controlling for academic ability and/or family SES. Thus, academic self-concept is positively affected by individual ability and SES, but is negatively affected by school-average values of these same variables. Abstract:Do causal attributions serve the need to protect and / or enhance self‐esteem? In a recent review, Miller and Ross (1975) proposed that there is evidence for self‐serving effect in the attribution of success but not in the attribution of failure; and that this effect reflects biases in information‐processing rather than self‐esteem maintenance. The present review indicated that self‐serving effects for both success and failure are obtained in most but not all experimental paradigms. Processes which may suppress or even reverse the self‐serving effect were discussed. Most important, the examination of research in which self‐serving effects are obtained suggested that these attributions are better understood in motivational than in information‐processing terms.

Abstract:Background. A positive self‐concept is valued as a desirable outcome in many disciplines of psychology as well as an important mediator to other outcomes. Aims. The present review examines support for the reciprocal effects model (REM) that posits academic self‐concept (ASC) and achievement are mutually reinforcing, each leading to gains in the other – and its extension to other achievement domains. Method. We review theoretical, methodological, and empirical support for the REM. Critical features in this research are a theoretical emphasis on multidimensional perspectives that focus on specific components of self‐concept and a methodological focus on a construct validity approach to evaluating the REM. Abstract:In their influential review, Baumeister, Campbell, Krueger, and Vohs (2003) concluded that self-esteem— the global component of self-concept—has no effect on subsequent academic performance. In contrast, Marsh and Craven's (2006) review of reciprocal effects models from an explicitly multidimensional perspective demonstrated that academic self-concept and achievement are both a cause and an effect of each other. Ironically, both reviews cited classic Youth in Transition studies in support of their respective claims. Abstract:Academic self-concept, originally posited by Shavelson as a single higher-order facet, was found by Marsh and Shavelson to comprise at least 2 higher-order academic facets (verbal and math). Marsh developed the internal/external (I/E) frame of reference model to account for the extreme separation of math and verbal self-concepts and their relations to math and verbal achievements. In our investigation, students completed the academic self-concept scales from 3 instruments that were the basis of 2 studies. In the 1st study, the 2 higher-order academic factors posited by Marsh and Shavelson fit the data substantially better than did a single higher order facet. In subsequent discussion, the Marsh/Shavelson model is more clearly defined, and directions for further research are identified. Abstract:Marsh and Parker (1984) described the big-fish–little-pond effect ({bflpe}), whereby equally able students have lower academic self-concepts in high-ability schools than in low-ability schools. The present investigation, a reanalysis of the Youth in Transition data, supported the generality of the earlier findings and demonstrated new theoretical implications of the {bflpe}. First, differences in the academic self-concepts of Black and White students, sometimes assumed to represent response biases, were explicable in terms of the {bflpe}. Second, equally able students earned higher grades in lower ability schools. This frame-of-reference effect for grades was distinct from, but contributed to, the {bflpe} for academic self-concept. Abstract:In extension of research on the Marsh/Shavelson model of self-concept, a set of 14 academic self-concept scales was related to school performances in 8 school subjects for a sample of 507 high school boys. Correlations between matching areas of self-concept and achievement (. 45 to. 70; mean r=. 57) were much larger than those typically found in previous research. Path models and multitrait–multimethod analyses demonstrated that self-concept/academic achievement relations were very specific to particular school subjects. The findings indicate that components of academic self-concepts are more differentiated—less correlated—than are achievement scores and that relations between academic self-concepts and academic achievements are more content specific than has been previously assumed.

Abstract:Academic self-concept, school marks, and teacher ratings of achievement were collected in 3 high-school subjects in each of 3 years (N= 603). In the structural equation models (SEMs) considered, both school-based performance and academic self-concept were measured with multiple indicators for each school subject. SEMs were used to evaluate the effects of prior academic self-concept on subsequent achievement after controlling for the effects of prior achievement, and the effects of prior achievement on subsequent academic self-concept after controlling for the effects of prior academic self-concept. Abstract:Generalized self-enhancing and self-protective attributional dispositions were investigated by having subjects indicate, in terms of percentage allocations, the extent to which "typical outcomes" in a person's life are determined by (a) the person's abilities, judgments, and actions and (b) factors beyond the person's control. In Study 1, respondents made such allocations with respect to either positive or negative outcomes in their own lives or in the lives of others. Sharp sex differences were evident in the obtained attributional patterns, with males revealing self-serving and females self-deprecating inclinations. Study 2 replicated the procedure of Study 1, with the major exception that the typical outcomes were designated as either "academic" or "social." Evidence for self-serving bias was obtained for both males and females, becoming most clearly apparent where the outcome domain was associated with high sex-related involvement (male-academic; female-social).

Abstract:Examined correlations of multiple dimensions of self-concepts in 305 6th graders from high-and low-SES schools with teacher ratings of student self-concepts and academic ability and with academic test scores. Ss were administered the Self-Description Questionnaire. The pattern of correlations demonstrated the clear separation between different areas of self-concept. Ss in low-SES/low-ability schools had higher self-concepts than in high-SES/high-ability schools, thus replicating the controversial findings by AT Soares and LM Coares (see record 1970-01244-001) and by N. Trowbridge (see record 1973-09316-001). This negative effect was substantially larger after controlling for the effect of individual SES and academic ability. Abstract:The self-leadership construct has received great attention from scholars over the last 40 years due to its capacity to influence personal effectiveness. However, despite strongly influencing individuals’ self-efficacy, performed studies did not determine whether self-leadership is connected, and how, with the Core-Self Evaluation (CSE) trait—a complex personality disposition based on self-efficacy, self-esteem, locus of control, and emotional stability—that has been found impacting decision-making processes within organizations. Moreover, it has not been identified whether individuals with a high level of self-leadership are more prone to be victims of some cognitive biases in decision-making processes, such as the internal attribution of successes and external attribution of failures (i.e., Self-Serving Bias, SSB) that are usually led by the strong belief of individuals in their own capacities. The outlined gaps can be substantiated by the following two research questions: “How is self-leadership related with CSE?” and “How does self-leadership influence the attribution of successes/failures?”. To answer these questions, the following were identified and analyzed for 93 executives: (i) the tendency in the attribution of successes and failures, (ii) the CSE, and (iii) their self-leadership level. Results show that: (i) a high level of CSE is connected with high levels of self-leadership; (ii) high levels of self-leadership bring individuals to the internal attribution of successes and external attribution of failures. This work reinforces the stream of (the few) studies that considers a high level of CSE and self-leadership as not always being desirable for managerial decision-making processes and consequent performance. This paper aims to enrich the debate concerning the relations between, on the one hand, self-leadership and, on the other hand, personality traits between self-leadership and decision making.

Abstract:Abstract People often receive feedback influenced by external factors, yet little is known about how this affects self-serving biases. Our theoretical model explores how multi-dimensional uncertainty allows additional degrees of freedom for self-serving bias. In our Primary experiment, feedback combining an individual’s ability and a teammate’s ability leads to biased belief updating. However, in a Follow-up with a random fundamental replacing the teammate, unbiased updating occurs. A Validation experiment shows belief distortion is greater when outcomes originate from human actions. Overall, our experiments highlight how multi-dimensional environments can enable self-serving biases.

Abstract:A literature review is used to clarify the distinction between dispositional and situational approaches to attribution research and to outline particular issues that are important for the study of individual differences in self-attributions. These issues are examined in relation to results obtained from 248 5th graders on the Self-Description Questionnaire and a new self-attribution measure, the Sydney Attribution Scale, that assesses students' attributions of their success or failure in different academic areas.
