Abstract:MOF-on-MOF (ZIF-67@MIL-125) derived S-scheme Co3O4@C-TiO2 (Co@Ti) homologous heterojunction is fabricated with a precisely regulated d-band center by constructing tight interface to enhance the Fenton-like activity. The regulation of d-band center of Co@Ti enhances the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) adsorption and the electron transfer rate, boosting the chloroquine phosphate (CQ) degradation rate constant by more than 20 times. Moreover, the self-made reactor adopting Co@Ti/graphite felt (GF) as immoblized catalyst accomplished long-term and continuous 100.0% CQ degradation efficiency in the simulated pulluted aqueous solution formulated from tap water up to 168.0h. For the first time, the newly-developed feature-based molecular networking (FBMN) technique is applied to analyze the intermediate products of CQ, which improved the efficiency and accuracy in analyzing intermediate products of various micropollutants. This work provides valuable guidance to regulate electronic structure of the catalyst by constructing MOF-on-MOF derived homologous heterojunctions with tight interface for enhanced Fenton-like ability toward water purification.
In Situ Generation of Hydrogen Peroxide Using Polymetallic-Doped G-C3n4 for Pollutant Removal

Abstract:Fenton reaction is a powerful technology for pollutants’ removal from water. However, the cost of H2O2 becomes one of the major stumbling blocks in its application. H2O2 has a relatively high price and is easily decomposed during transportation and use; therefore, in situ synthesis of H2O2 could improve economic benefits effectively. In this study, a Fe/Ni/Pd ternary metal-doped graphitic carbon nitride (FeNi-Pd@CN) is prepared, and in situ H2O2 generation using formic acid as hydrogen sources for organics removal was proved. The catalyst is advantageous, as H2O2 could accumulate to 1.69 mmol/L in 150 min when pumping air rather than oxygen gases in other studies. Furthermore, 92.0% of Acid Red 73 (200 mg/L) and 93.2% of tetracycline hydrochloride (10 mg/L) could be removed in 150 min without any pH adjustment. Characterization results show that the catalyst has good stability in metal leaching and reuse tests. It is proved that •OH and •O2− are the main reactive oxygen species, and a synergistic effect between Fe and Ni exists that enhances ROS generation for organics degradation. This work offers a promising method to remove refectory organic contaminants from industrial wastewater.
Facile self-assembly synthesis of titanate/Fe3O4 nanocomposites for the efficient removal of Pb2+ from aqueous systems

Abstract:We report a novel process for the self-assembly of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) onto titanate nanotubes (TNTs), nanofibers (TNFs) and nanosheets (TNSs) to synthesize magnetic titanate nanocomposites. Both coulombic and van der Waals forces made important contributions to control the assembly process, in which the Fe3O4 NPs were uniformly dispersed onto the surfaces of the titanate nanostructures by a facile acid-induced method. The Fe3O4 NPs possessed unique magnetic properties for adsorbent separation, while the structures of the titanates determined the efficiency of Pb2+ removal. Interestingly, it was found that Pb2+ can be completely and quickly removed by the TNTs/Fe3O4 and TNSs/Fe3O4 nanocomposites. It is worth noting that the TNTs/Fe3O4 nanocomposite possessed the maximum adsorption capacity of 382.3 mg g−1, displaying a high efficiency for Pb2+ removal. The effects of pH value and contact time at different initial Pb2+ concentrations have been investigated. Based on the characterization results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy, a possible removal mechanism was proposed. This work provides a facile and general approach to synthesize magnetic functional nanocomposites for water treatment.

Abstract:We present a simple and effective method for the synthesis of nanostructured Fe(3)O(4) micron-spheres (NFMSs) by annealing hydrothermally formed FeCO(3) spheres in argon. The phase structure, particle size, and magnetic properties of the product have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and by means of a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The results have shown that the as-obtained NFMSs have a diameter of about 5 μm and are composed of nanometer-sized porous lamellae. The NFMSs have a large specific surface area (135.9 m(2) g(-1)), reductive Fe(2+) incorporated into their structure, and intense magnetic properties. These properties suggest that NFMSs have potential application in removing toxic Cr(6+) ions from polluted water. At 25°C, each gram of NFMSs product can remove 43.48 mg of Cr(6+) ions, as compared to just 10.2 mg for nanometer-sized Fe(3)O(4) and 1.89 mg for micron-sized Fe(3)O(4). The enhanced removal performance can be ascribed to the structural features. Moreover, the Cr(6+) ion removal capacity of the NFMSs can reach up to 71.2 mg g(-1) at 50°C. The influencing parameters in the removal of Cr(6+) ions, such as contact time, pH, and temperature, have been evaluated. The Cr(6+)-removal mechanism has been investigated. We have found that the NFMSs product not only serves as an effective adsorbent to remove toxic Cr(6+) ions from polluted water, but also as an effective reductant in reducing the adsorbed toxic Cr(6+) ions to much less toxic Cr(3+) through the Fe(2+) incorporated into its structure.
In situ growth of iron incorporated Ni3S2 nanosheet on nickel foam in mediating electron transfer to peroxymonosulfate for pollutant abatement

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of organic pollutants is a well-known and effective technique for pollutant abatement. Unfortunately, this method is significantly hindered in practical applications by the low efficiency and difficult recovery of the catalysts in a powdery form. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) framework of Fe-incorporated Ni3S2 nanosheets in-situ grown on Ni foam (Fe-Ni3S2@NF) was fabricated by a facile two-step hydrothermal process and applied to trigger peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation of organic compounds in water. A homogeneous growth environment enabled the uniform and scalable growth of Fe-Ni3S2 nanosheets on the Ni foam. Fe-Ni3S2@NF possessed outstanding activity and durability in activating PMS, as it effectively facilitated electron transfer from organic pollutants to PMS. Fe-Ni3S2@NF initially supplied electrons to PMS, causing the catalyst to undergo oxidation, and subsequently accepted electrons from organic compounds, returning to its initial state. The introduction of Fe into the Ni3S2 lattice enhanced electrical conductivity, promoting mediated electron transfer between PMS and organic compounds. The 3D conductive Ni foam provided an ideal platform for the nucleation and growth of Fe-Ni3S2, accelerating pollutant abatement due to its porous structure and high conductivity. Furthermore, its monolithic nature simplified the catalyst recycling process. A continuous flow packed-bed reactor by encapsulating Fe-Ni3S2@NF catalyst achieved complete pollutant abatement with continuous operation for 240 h, highlighting its immense potential for practical environmental remediation. This study presents a facile synthesis method for creating a novel type of monolithic catalyst with high activity and durability for decontamination through Fenton-like processes.
Structure-activity relationship, adsorption, and fenton-like catalytic oxidation capacity of iron-oxide nano-confined materials

Abstract:In this study, iron-oxide was loaded into polystyrene macroporous microspheres containing sulfonate groups to prepare an environmental purification material with adsorption and Fenton-like oxidizing abilities. Iron-oxide is prone to inactivation due to reunion in the process of preparation and application, and this modification aimed to mitigate this problem. Subsequently, based on the microscopic characterization results and the effect on the treatment of methylene blue (MB) simulated wastewater, the structure-activity relationship of two key (OH- concentrations in precipitation solution and iron ion compositions in the impregnation solution) factors with the adsorption and catalytic oxidation ability of the iron-oxide nano-confined materials were explored. The results indicated that the samples both exhibited adsorption and catalytic oxidation capabilities. The removal efficiency of MB simulated wastewater can reached 95.3% after adsorption for 9 h, reaching 99.98% after catalytic oxidation for 6 h. In addition, the removal efficiency of the MB simulated wastewater exceeded 95% after 6 cycles. The concentration of OH- in precipitation solution could affect the volume of iron crystals on the carrier which affected the pore size of the sample and the adsorption capacity. It also influenced whether iron ions could be stably loaded inside the carrier, determining the conducting homogeneous or heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions and the stability of the samples. The composition of iron ions in the impregnating solution regulated the volume of the crystals and adsorption sites, which influenced the adsorption ability of the samples. In addition, the presence of Fe2+ could promote the progress of Fenton-like reactions. The identification results of the ROSs showed that •OH was the main free radical. The quenching experiment results showed that the contribution rate of •OH toward MB degradation reached 99.81%. In addition, the possible degradation pathways of MB were analyzed.
Ultrafast degradation of emerging organic pollutants via activation of peroxymonosulfate over Fe3C/Fe@N-C-x: Singlet oxygen evolution and electron-transfer mechanisms

Abstract:Fe3C/Fe decorated N-doped magnetic carbon materials (denoted as Fe3C/Fe@N-C-x) were successfully fabricated via facile one-pot calcination of MIL-88B(Fe) with a green precursor of melamine. Benefiting from the co-existence of sp2-hybridized C–π moieties, oxygen-containing groups (CO and O–CO), N-doping species and ferreous nanoparticles (FNPs), the as-obtained Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 exhibited excellent activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for ultrafast elimination of various emerging organic contaminants with high mineralization capacities. Inspired by the unique nanotube morphology and encapsulation of FNPs, the Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 possessed trace Fe leaching and can be magnetically separated for an easy recycling. Combining with competitive radical scavenging tests, electron spin resonance (ESR), electrochemical analysis and in-situ Raman spectra, the singlet oxygen (1O2) and electron-transfer can be accounted for the organic pollutant removal. Because of that, the Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 exhibited good resistance to inorganic anions and natural organic matters (NOMs). It was fascinating that Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 achieved satisfactory treatment efficiency for real pharmaceutical wastewater.

Abstract:Organic contamination of water results in significant risks to the biosphere and to human health. The treatment of organic pollutants in effluents urgently requires a green, sustainable, and effective approach. Herein, a straightforward one-step procedure was developed to create the photocatalytic mesh, using iron mesh as the substrate and heterostructure g-C3N4/MIL-101(Fe) as photocatalytic material to activate persulfate (PS) to removal methyl orange (MO) in water. Fluorescence stereo microscopes (FSM), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Nitrogen adsorption-desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray powder diffractometer (XRD) were used to characterize the morphological and physicochemical properties of synthesized composites, which confirmed successful growth of g-C3N4/MIL-101(Fe) on iron mesh. The g-C3N4/MIL-101(Fe)'s outstanding PS activation capacity promoted electron transfer and accelerated generation of SO4•- with up to 91.05 % MO degradation under 60 min visible light condition. The removal mechanisms induced by quenching experiment, and electron spin resonance (ESR) proved that •OH, •O2- and h+ contributed to the removal of MO. Moreover, the degradation pathway of MO and the assessment of intermediates were identified by high resolutions mass spectrum (HRMS). This study provided a convenient and economical method to build innovative photocatalytic systems for organic pollution degradation.

Abstract:In this work, core–shell structured Fe 3 O 4 @PCN-333 (Fe) composite was constructed using a self-template method, in which Fe 3 O 4 microspheres not only serve as magnetic centers but also provide Fe (III) for the preparation of PCN-333 (Fe). PCN-333 (Fe) uniformly grew as a shell on the surfaces of the microspheres, and the shell thickness was approximately 38 nm. The composite exhibited high adsorption performance, with maximum adsorption capacities of 471.7, 303.3 and 314.5 mg/g for chlortetracycline, tetracycline and oxytetracycline, respectively. The adsorption of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) was based on the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order model, and external diffusion and pore diffusion were the rate-limiting steps in adsorption. The strong adsorption capacity was attributed to the mechanism of π–π interaction, coordination bonds, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals force. Fe 3 O 4 @PCN-333 (Fe) composite displayed good stability in the aqueous solution, strong TCs adsorption capacity, high selectivity, anti-interference performance for adsorbing TCs, fast recovery with external magnetic field, reusability, thus effectively reducing the cost for removing water pollutants. These features make the composite a potential material for removing TCs in the environment.

Removal of pollutants in banknote printing wastewater by mesoporous Fe/SiO2 prepared from rice husk pyrolytic residues

Abstract:Iron-incorporated silica (Fe/SiO2) with different Fe/Si molar ratio was successfully prepared from rice husk pyrolytic residues (RHR) through alkali pretreatment, co-precipitation, and calcination. Various characterization methods indicated that the Fe/SiO2 samples possessed mesoporous structure with Fe species incorporated into the framework of silica. The obtained materials were applied in the treatment of hazardous banknote printing wastewater, and under the optimal conditions, colored pollutants, humic acid-like and soluble microbial by-product-like organics were removed significantly. It was found that Fe/SiO2 acted as both flocculant and catalyst, and the framework iron species catalyzed the oxidative degradation of refractory organics in the presence of H2O2. A heterogeneous Fenton-like system was formed in the wastewater treatment process.
TiO2 pillared montmorillonite in-situ growth of CeOx/MnOy nanoparticles for effective arsenic (III) adsorption in wastewater

Abstract:Compared with As(V), As(III) is a tricky issue worldwide for its higher toxicity and more difficult to remove in aqueous solution. In present study, a novel CeOx/MnOy nanoparticles anchored layered structural TiO2 pillared montmorillonite (TiO2-Mt-Ce-Mn) was fabricated and applied as an efficient absorbent for As(III) removal. Under the condition of the initial As(III) concentration = 20 mg/L and adsorbent dose = 0.4 g/L, TiO2-Mt-Ce-Mn with a high specific surface area (148.099 m2/g) has an outstanding adsorption capacity (46.58 mg/g) for As(III) at pH 4.2, and the effect of oxy-anions on adsorption efficiency is slight except for H2PO4-. Interestingly, the layered structure provides sufficient attachment space for CeOx/MnOy nanoparticles, while CeOx/MnOy nanoparticles in turn endows TiO2-Mt a high redox potential, which further facilitates the oxidation of As(III), and this significantly reduces the toxicity of wastewater. The adsorption mechanism includes the oxidation of As(III) to As(V) by both CeOx/MnOy nanoparticles and TiO2 and effective adsorption of the residual As(III) and the formed As(V) subsequently. In addition, the adsorption efficiency of TiO2-Mt-Ce-Mn can still maintain 79.6% after five cycles through a facile regeneration method. Thus, the nanocomposite with low-cost synthesis process, high adsorption capacity, and regenerability is a promising candidate for As(III) treatment of wastewater.
Effect of Γ-Fe2o3 Nanoparticles on the Composition of Montmorillonite and Its Sorption Capacity for Pyrene.

Abstract:Fe content and distribution on montmorillonite would probably enhance its sorption capacity for hydrophobic organic pollutants. Thus, Fe modified montmorillonites with different ratios of FeSO4 center dot 7H2O and Camontmorillonite were prepared. The results indicated that gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were not only generated at the montmorillonite surfaces, but that the gamma-Fe2O3 also extended the edges of montmorillonite surfaces. The sorption capacities for pyrene were enhanced and even reached 834.79 mu g g-1 with increase in ferrous iron content, but were then suppressed due to aggregation of gamma-Fe2O3 on montmorillonite surfaces. Furthermore, pyrene was directly observed on gamma-Fe2O3-montmorillonite surfaces with a lattice spacing parameter of approximately 0.27 nm, indicating that a new phase that mainly contained pyrene was generated during the sorption process. Additionally, after regenerating the gamma-Fe2O3-montmorillonite composites, they could be reused for at least 5 cycles. It is therefore proposed that the prepared gamma-Fe2O3-montmorillonite could be exploited as a potential green composite for remediation of hydrophobic organic pollutants in soil and sediment. Abstract:In the work, 3-dimensional (3D) flower-like NiFe2O4 was prepared for the removal of water contaminants via a facile hydrothermal method and using Ni foam as substrate. The as-prepared NiFe2O4 was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Nitrogen adsorption-desorption, vibrating sample magnetometer and Fourier transformed infrared. The as-prepared NiFe2O4 owns a high specific surface which is favorable for adsorption of water contaminants. And the magnetic property of the as-prepared material, which is also preferred in wastewater treatment, makes it easy to be separated from the water. To investigate adsorption behavior, UV–visible spectrophotometer, adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics were studied. It is demonstrated that the adsorption process fits well with the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order model. The maximum adsorbing capacity (qm) of the 3D flower-like NiFe2O4 for Congo red adsorption was 229.89 mg g−1, and the adsorption capacity reached 80% in 10 min. The enhanced results suggest that the as-prepared 3D flower-like NiFe2O4 is a potential adsorbent for industrial wastewater treatment.
Catalytic degradation of micropollutant by peroxymonosulfate activation through Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle confined in the nanoscale interlayer of Fe(III)-saturated montmorillonite

Abstract:Low cost, green, regenerable catalyst for persulfate activation is the popularly concerned topic for the degradation of persistent organic micropollutants in drinking water. In this work, natural montmorillonite (MMT) saturated with Fe(III) ions was used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of atrazine in raw drinking water. Results showed that the adsorption of atrazine was quickly completed within 1 min and the percentage degradation was finally increased up to 94.1% in 60 min. The d001-spacing of MMT was enlarged to 2.91 nm at the most by Fe(III) saturation. Atrazine was adsorbed into the nanoscale interlayer of Fe(III)-saturated montmorillonite (Fe-MMT), where the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle was sustainably realized through the accelerated transformation of electrons between Fe(III) and PMS. Meanwhile, the in-situ generated Fe(II) accelerated the decomposition of PMS to further proceed the degradation of atrazine through the oxidation of HO• and SO4•- radicals. This nanoconfined effect of PMS activation by Fe(III) was further confirmed through the degradation of various micropollutants in the backgrounds of river water. The selective catalytic oxidation of micropollutants through PMS activation was attributed to the 2D mesoporous structure of Fe-MMT, inhibiting the interlayer adsorption of larger molecular backgrounds (humic acids etc.). Fe(III)-saturated montmorillonite (Fe-MMT) provided a feasible and scalable method of PMS activation by Fe(III) for the degradation of micropollutants in drinking water.

Abstract:The development of high-performance heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts boosts their practical application under different scenario requirements. Herein, we put forward a MXene-like 2D MOF-derived carbon loaded Fe3O4 nanoparticles strategy to assemble NSC@Fe3O4 catalyst, which achieved effective removal of target pollutant via size-exclusion effect of 2D intervals. Under humic acid and tetracycline (TTCH) coexist condition, the degradation rate of target pollutant tetracycline presented negligible impact. To confirm the possible size -exclusion effect, Fe3O4 nanoparticles and unloaded NSC were also prepared to remove tetracycline. By quenching experiments, fluorescence detection, and EPR analysis, a non-radical mechanism dominated by O-1(2) and electron transfer was hypothesized. The degradation products were analyzed by 3D EEM fluorescence and LC-MS, and the possible degradation pathways were inferred. Further toxicity analysis of intermediates and E. coli culture indicated that the toxicity of TTCH was reduced under NSC@Fe3O4/PMS system. Overall, this research proposes a novel method for selective and effective removal of target pollutants in complex water bodies using 2D MOF-derived carbon compounds.

Abstract:Carbon microspheres supported sulfurized nano zero-valent iron (CMS@S-nFe 0 ) was successfully prepared. The interaction impact of different dosages on the removal of Cr(VI) and p-nitrophenol (PNP) complex contamination was explored by response surface method (RSM). The results showed both the C group and Fe 2+ on the surface of carbon microspheres could be used as activators of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) decomposition, and •OH and SO 4 •- could be produced to promote the oxidative degradation of PNP. Among them, SO 4 •- was the main reactive oxygen species. The presence of PNP could further promote the reduction of Cr(VI). Besides, loading nFe 0 and FeS compounds on the carbon base could significantly reduce the production of free iron ions, which could effectively remove Cr(VI) and PNP from polluted water. In terms of treatment results, CMS@S- nFe 0 was a promising material for wastewater treatment because of its excellent performance in adsorption of heavy metals and degradation of organic pollutants.

Adsorption of heavy metals in water by modifying Fe3O4 nanoparticles with oxidized humic acid

Abstract:Magnetic nanoparticles require a protective coating to enable them to be used to adsorb heavy metals from wastewater, given their oxidation properties and instability in acidic media. Humic acid (HA) has an affinity for magnetic nanoparticles, but its adsorption capacity is low. To improve adsorption capacity, we synthesized a novel adsorbent (HA-O/Fe3O4) through chemical modification and examined its adsorption of Pb (II), Cu (II), Cd (II), and Ni (II) ions. The effects of pH competition, adsorption mechanism, isotherm, kinetics, regeneration, and stability were investigated. The HA-O/Fe3O4 exhibited faster kinetic performance (10 min), conforming to the pseudo-two kinetics equation, and the adsorption isotherm conforms to the Langmuir model with maximum adsorption capacities of 111.10, 76.92, 71.43, and 33.33 mg/g, respectively. The interaction between metal ions and functional groups of the adsorbent was further characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and the results indicated that adsorption by cation exchange at low pH and complexation at high pH. Additionally, the adsorbent was recycled four times, and the removal rate was not significantly affected. A recycling efficiency of more than 90 % indicates good sustainability and reusability. The stability test shows that the amount of organic matter and heavy metals desorbed by the adsorbent were negligible. Most importantly, at low concentrations, all four metal ions meet the industrial emission standards, and Pb (II) and Cu (II) meet the drinking water standards.
Preparation of Fe3O4@NiSiO3 Nanocatalyst and Performance of Catalytic Fenton Oxidation to Degrade Dye Wastewater

Abstract:The Fe3 O4@NiSiO3 nanoparticle was synthesized by solvothermal method and sol-gel method .It was characterized by XRD, TEM, BET and VSM.It was used as heterogeneous Fenton catalyst to degrade rhodamine B.The optimal reaction conditions are 5.5 of pH, 1.00 g· L-1 of catalyst dosage and 2.5% of H2 O2 dosage,the degradation efficiency of rhodamine B reached over 95%.After reusing 5 times the degradation efficiency was still stable at 95%.Acid scarlet 3R, methyl orange, methylene blue, malachite green were also used as target pollu-tants to study on the Fenton catalytic performance of Fe 3 O4@NiSiO3, the degradation efficiency of all dyes except the azo-dye reached over 95%.The Fe3 O4@NiSiO3 have good magnetic separability and recycling ability .Further research showed that Ni has a promoting effect on Fenton oxidation .
An Energetic MOF-assistant Confined Expansion Strategy to Fabricate Fe-doped Porous Carbon Beads for Advanced Oxidation Processes: Interfacial Reaction Mechanism and Biological Toxicity

Abstract:Porous carbon material catalysts derived from MOFs-based precursors are gradually being used extensively in advanced oxidation possesses. However, some of the existing problems such as hard to recovery and easy to secondary pollution still need to be solved. Here, a series of Fe-doped energetic metal-organic framework (EMOF)-derived porous carbon spheres (EMFexS) were obtained by the phase inversion route. EMOFs puffed up during pyrolysis at high temperatures to create large-sized hierarchically porous structure. The large specific surface area (483.4 m2/g) and high nitrogen content, and hierarchically porous structure endow EMFe0.2S with excellent catalytic performance to remove tetracycline removal efficiency. By activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS), it was found that the rate constant (k) in EMFe0.2S/PMS system was 0.058 min-1, which was 1.75, 1.56 and 1.52 times than that of EMFe0S/PMS system, EMFe0.1S/PMS system and EMFe0.25S/PMS system, respectively. Experiments and material characterization point that the existence of nitrogen and iron in the catalyst were the potential active sites. The continuous flow catalytic reaction and biological toxicity experiments were employed to evaluate practical application value. This study provides new insights into the preparation of microspheres for water treatment with the help of EMOF-assisted confined expansion strategy.
