Abstract:A facile solvothermal method coupled with an annealing strategy is developed to synthesize Fe 3 O 4 /carbon (Fe 3 O 4 @C) magnetic composite microstructures with different morphologies, including flower-like, hollow spheres and egg-like. The unique multiporous and hollow structure of the as-prepared hierarchical Fe 3 O 4 @C hollow microsphere results in an appealing performance as an absorber of Cr(VI) ions in aqueous solution, delivering a high capacity of ~ 197.2 mg/g. Meanwhile, the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 ‘‘core’’ in the hierarchical microstructures can be easily separated from aqueous systems by magnetic separation. Furthermore, the carbon layers effectively prevent the aggregation of magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The excellent absorbing ability of Cr(VI) ions and easy separation process strongly suggest that the Fe 3 O 4 @C magnetic microstructures would have a great potential as adsorbing materials in the large-scale application in environmental purification.
Removal of Hexavalent Chromium from Wastewater by Cu/Fe Bimetallic Nanoparticles

Abstract:Passivation of nanoscale zerovalent iron hinders its efficiency in water treatment, and loading another catalytic metal has been found to improve the efficiency significantly. In this study, Cu/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles were prepared by liquid-phase chemical reduction for removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater. Synthesized bimetallic nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmet-Teller isotherm, and X-ray diffraction. The results showed that Cu loading can significantly enhance the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by 29.3% to 84.0%, and the optimal Cu loading rate was 3% (wt%). The removal efficiency decreased with increasing initial pH and Cr(VI) concentration. The removal of Cr(VI) was better fitted by pseudo-second-order model than pseudo-first-order model. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the Cr(VI) removal was spontaneous and endothermic, and the increase of reaction temperature facilitated the process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that Cr(VI) was completely reduced to Cr(III) and precipitated on the particle surface as hydroxylated Cr(OH)3 and CrxFe1-x(OH)3 coprecipitation. Our work could be beneficial for the application of iron-based nanomaterials in remediation of wastewater.
Synthesis of Magnetic Core–shell Iron Nanochains for Potential Applications in Cr(VI) Ion Pollution Treatment

Abstract:Fe nanochains with diameters of 50–150 nm and average length of about 1 μm were synthesized by titrating NaBH4 solution into FeCl2 aqueous solution (i.e., reduction of Fe(II) ions). The microstructures and magnetic properties were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results reveal that the nanochains have a core–shell structure with α-Fe as the core and amorphous iron oxide as the shell. The Fe core–shell nanochains show the characteristic of soft magnetic materials, achieving the highest magnetization of 200.74 mA·m2·g−1. The influences of the titrating rate of NaBH4 aqueous solution on the morphology of the Fe nanochains were also studied. It reveals that low titrating rate is beneficial for synthesizing Fe nanochains with uniform morphology. The reduction experiments indicate that these Fe nanochains are of high reducibility. About 90 % Cr(VI) ions are successfully removed after 10 min reaction of 100 mg Fe nanochains in the 100 ml K2Cr2O7 solution (100 mg·L−1) and more than 99 % after 30 min.
Self-assembled morphology-controlled hierarchical Fe3O4 @LDH for Cr(VI) removal

Abstract:The efficient removal of Cr(VI) in water with high solubility and mobility is of great significance because Cr(VI) is one of the most toxic heavy metals, but it also faces some major challenges. The dispersibility and recyclability of nanoadsorbents are closely related to their Cr(VI) removal efficiency. Herein, the self-assembly method was used to synthesize core-shell hybrid nanoparticles, named Fe3O4 @LDH, with a vertically aligned layered double hydroxide (MgAl-LDH) nanosheet shell and a Fe3O4 magnetite core. The obtained Fe3O4 @LDH nanoparticles exhibit a highly porous and well-ordered three-dimensional core-shell structure with a wool-ball-like morphology. The self-assembled morphology of the core-shell structure can be effectively controlled and induced by regulating the Mg2+/Al3+ ratio of the reaction system. The influence mechanism of charge density of LDH brucite-like layers on the self-assembled morphology was proposed. Fe3O4 @LDH nanoparticles exhibit a Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of 108.7 mg/g. The synergetic contribution of the hybrid self-assembly of Fe3O4 and MgAl-LDH leads to more dispersion, better adsorption capability, and faster kinetics. Moreover, because of the super-paramagnetic and highly saturated magnetization (34.53 emu/g) of the Fe3O4 @LDH nanoparticles, they can be used as efficient magnetic adsorbents and easily separated using a magnetic field and reused. The prepared Fe3O4 @LDH nanoparticles are a cost-effective nanoadsorbent for removing Cr(VI) from wastewater and provide a reference for the structural design and construction of nanocomposites.

Abstract:Electrospun polyacrylonitrile/iron nitrate (PAN/Fe(NO3)3) nanofibers were prepared, and used as precursor nanofibers for production of carbon/iron nanofibers via the carbonization process. The catalytic effects of metallic iron on morphologies, chemical structures, graphitic carbon growth, and thermal behavior during and after the carbonization process were carefully investigated. The existence of iron nitrate can increase the fiber size and convert the non-woven morphology into self-aligned assembly. The presence of catalytic iron facilitates the stabilization and the carbonization of PAN fibers resulting in an increased carbon yield, along with more ordered and larger graphitic crystallites. The developed carbon/iron nanofibers can be used as an ultra-effective nanoadsorbent to remove the toxic Cr(VI) in water, as one of the potential applications. The nanoadsorbent shows a fast and powerful performance in Cr(VI) removal through reduction and adsorption (maximum removal capacity of 445.3 mg/g). The α-Fe nanoparticles on carbon nanofiber surface is first oxidized to rapidly reduce the mobile Cr(VI) into the static Cr(III). Subsequently, the diffusion controlled redox reactions between the iron inside of carbon matrix and the Cr(VI) achieve a sustained continuous Cr(VI) removal for 60 days. Furthermore, this versatile material is magnetic making separation and recycle easy to perform.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution has posed a potential hazard to the ecological environment and human health. Herein, a novel ternary magnetic adsorbent (Fe3O4/g-C3N4/Carbon layer, Carbon layer: hydrothermal products from sucrose) was synthesized through a simple hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) method for removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) removal. The Carbon layer (CL) formed during the HTC of carbon precursors (sucrose) acted as a reducing agent. Also, it has abundant oxygen-containing groups on its surface. The Fe3O4/g-C3N4/CL had a high removal capacity for Cr (VI) (50.09 mg/g), and excellent regeneration and magnetic separation performance. Importantly, the Fe3O4/g-C3N4/CL could not only improve the adsorption ability for Cr (VI), but also strengthen the immobilization of Cr (III). Based on the comprehensive experiments and characterization, combined with DFT calculations, we proposed that, the first time, the removal of Cr (VI) was controlled by three consecutive processes: (1) ion exchange of Cr (VI) by hydroxyl groups, (2) reduction of Cr (VI) to Cr (III) by electron-donor (oxygen-containing) groups (EDGs), and (3) complexation of Cr (III) by amine groups. This study provides a new avenue for the removal of toxic oxygen anions and reveals an original removal mechanism of Fe3O4/g-C3N4/CLx (x = hydrothermal products from carbon precursors (glucose, ascorbic acid, cellulose)).

Abstract:To eliminate trace toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from water with different pHs, researchers focused on adsorption, reduction of Cr(VI) to trivalent chromium with followed precipitation while the complex and costly reactivity regulations via adjusting pHs was inevitable. Here we exploit Fe-Cu nanocomposites (CnZVI/Cu) with galvanic reactions and engineered nanoconfinement effect for removing Cr(VI) from acidic/alkaline water directly, consisting of phosphorylated cracked nanoscale zero-valent iron (CnZVI, crack width of 1–2 nm) anode and Cu aggregates cathode. The formed primary battery exhibits strong electrostatic interactions towards ions and outstanding reactivity of reduction and precipitation at acidic/alkaline conditions. The pH inside the cracks at neutral or alkaline conditions is calculated to turn lower for enhancing the dynamics relevant to remediation. Benefiting from those two effects, the removal efficiencies of Cr(VI) through CnZVI/Cu attain more than 99.5 % at pH ≤ 8 and even 96 % at pH of 12 in only 30 min, outperforming the previous works. Its protection on beings (water spinach, zebrafish, and cell) from suffering poisonous Cr(VI), control of adsorbed Cr from migration, and magnetic collectability demonstrate the admirable removal performance, biosafety, and stability, respectively. This work proposes highly-efficient, eco-friendly, convenient, and low-cost technology to scavenge Cr(VI) from acidic/alkaline water.

Abstract:Carbon microspheres supported sulfurized nano zero-valent iron (CMS@S-nFe 0 ) was successfully prepared. The interaction impact of different dosages on the removal of Cr(VI) and p-nitrophenol (PNP) complex contamination was explored by response surface method (RSM). The results showed both the C group and Fe 2+ on the surface of carbon microspheres could be used as activators of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) decomposition, and •OH and SO 4 •- could be produced to promote the oxidative degradation of PNP. Among them, SO 4 •- was the main reactive oxygen species. The presence of PNP could further promote the reduction of Cr(VI). Besides, loading nFe 0 and FeS compounds on the carbon base could significantly reduce the production of free iron ions, which could effectively remove Cr(VI) and PNP from polluted water. In terms of treatment results, CMS@S- nFe 0 was a promising material for wastewater treatment because of its excellent performance in adsorption of heavy metals and degradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract:To date, highly toxic heavy metal ions from wastewater seriously deteriorate the aquatic environment safety. This study proposes an adsorbent that can be adopted to remove heavy metal ions by combining environmentally friendly cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), sodium alginate (SA), and amino-rich polyethyleneimine using a ferric chloride- and glutaraldehyde-mediated crosslinking process and yielding a porous hollow bead (CS-Fe@PEI). The bead has a hollow porous structure according to SEM and a high nitrogen content of 13.85 wt% with numerous active adsorption sites, which are beneficial to the adsorption of heavy metal ions. Chromium was chosen as the main model pollutant for batch adsorption experiments. CS-Fe@PEI has excellent adsorption capacity of 526.32 mg/g for Cr(VI) at 298 K, which conforms with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order model. The stable hollow structure allowed the regeneration of the CS-Fe@PEI beads for more than six cycles after Cr(VI) adsorption. According to FT-IR, Zeta, and XPS analyses, the beads effectively adsorbed the pollutants by electrostatic interaction, reducing the hypertoxic Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Furthermore, the beads also possessed a superior adsorption capacity for heavy metal cations (Cu(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), and Pb(II)). These results demonstrated that the fabricated CS-Fe@PEI beads were an efficient and reusable adsorbent, with a high potential for removing heavy metal ions from industrial wastewater.

Abstract:The increasing usage of an important heavy metal chromium for industrial purposes, such as metallurgy, electroplating, leather tanning, and other fields, has contributed to an augmented level of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in watercourses negatively impacting the ecosystems and significantly making Cr(VI) pollution a serious environmental issue. In this regard, iron nanoparticles exhibited great reactivity in remediation of Cr(VI)-polluted waters and soils, but, the persistence and dispersion of the raw iron should be improved. Herein, this article utilized an environment-friendly celite as a modifying reagent and described the preparation of a novel composites namaly celite decorated iron nanoparticles (C-Fe0) and evaluation of C-Fe0 for the sequestration performance of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. The results indicated that initial Cr(VI) concentration, adsorbent dosage, and especially solution pH are all critical factors to control C-Fe0 performance in Cr(VI) sequestration. We demonstrated that C-Fe0 could achieve a high Cr(VI) sequestration efficiency with an optimized adsorbent dosage. Fitness of the pseudo-second-order kinetics model with data indicated that adsorption was the rate-controlling step and chemical interaction controlled Cr(VI) sequestration on C-Fe0. The adsorption isotherm of Cr(VI) could be the best depicted by Langmuir model with a monolayer adsorption. The underlying sequestration path of Cr(VI) by C-Fe0 was then put forward, and the combined effect of adsorption and reduction implied the potentials of C-Fe0 in Cr(VI) removal.

Abstract:3D hierarchically porous NiO/NF (Ni foam) was synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method and a subsequent annealing process in different atmospheres for the simultaneous Cr(VI) removal and hydrogen generation from wastewater by the electrocoagulation method. O2 atmosphere for annealing increased the Ni3+ content in NiO, thus led to an enhanced electrostatic interaction with Cr(VI)/OH− anions and subsequently increased the Cr(VI) adsorption and Ni hydroxide flocculant production. Thus, the NiO-O2/NF electrode exhibited the best Cr(VI) removal performance of 99.5% within 20 min at the applied potential of 0.97 V vs. RHE, along with a hydrogen generation rate of 1.1 mmol g−1 h−1. The removal mechanism was suggested, including the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III), direct complexation reactions with the freshly produced amorphous Ni hydroxides, and adsorption on NiO-X/NF electrodes.

Abstract:The structural, textural, and optical properties of (Mg0.4Co0.4Mn0.2)Fe2‐2xSmxSnxO4 nanoparticles (0.000 ≤ x ≤ 0.050), synthesized using the coprecipitation method, were analyzed. The adsorption process follows a second‐order kinetic model, with nanoparticles at x = 0.050 showing the highest adsorption rates for Cr(III), Fe(III), and Zn(II). These nanoparticles successfully removed Cr(III), Fe(III), and Zn(II) ions with removal efficiencies of 93.3%, 98.8%, and 80.6%, respectively. However, there was negligible removal of Cu(II) ions. Water contamination by heavy metal ions poses a significant environmental threat. This study investigates (Mg0.4Co0.4Mn0.2)Fe2−2xSmxSnxO4 (0.000 ≤ x ≤ 0.050) ferrite nanoparticles (NPs) as eco‐friendly adsorbents for Cu(II), Cr(III), Fe(III), and Zn(II). X‐ray powder diffraction (XRD) confirmed sample purity, with crystallite size decreasing from 20.28 to 13.31 nm as x increased. Scanning and transmission electron microscopies revealed irregular morphology, whereas energy‐dispersive X‐ray showed successful dopant incorporation into the ferrite lattice. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis indicated a surface area increase from 76.5 to 91.4 m2/g with doping. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy identified oxidation states, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the spinel structure. Doping also increased the direct bandgap energy from 3.224 to 3.245 eV and decreased Urbach energy from 0.374 to 0.352 eV. The NPs achieved high removal efficiencies for Cr(III) at 93.3%, Fe(III) at 98.8%, and Zn(II) at 80.6%, though removal of Cu(II) was minimal. The optimal adsorption performance was observed at x = 0.050. Adsorption followed second‐order kinetics and fit the Langmuir isotherm.

Abstract:The Fe3O4@nSiO2@mSiO2/NTA (FNMs-NTA) was prepared by grafting magnetic mesoporous microspheres with nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) and applied as an adsorbent for the removal of Cr(III) from complex solutions. Some characterization techniques including Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), small-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXS), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to characterize functional groups and pore structure of FNMs-NTA, which proved that NTA was successfully decorated onto the magnetic Fe3O4@nSiO2@mSiO2 (FNMs) and FNMs-NTA featured a regular mesoporous structure. The batch adsorption of Cr(III) by FNMs-NTA exhibited high adsorption capacity (16.0 mg·g−1 at pH 3.0, and 25 °C). Adsorption data followed Freundlich isotherm and adsorption process was a spontaneous adsorption process. Moreover, the kinetics of adsorption were well explained by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. FNMs-NTA showed resistance to interfering inorganic cations (Na+, Ca2+) and complexing agents (EDTA). Furthermore, FNMs-NTA exhibited remarkable regeneration performance and easy separation under external magnetic field. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed the FNMs-NTA had excellent adsorption ability for Cr(III) because of the ion exchange and surface complexation.

Abstract:A novel porous NiFe-oxide nanocubes (NiFe NCs) binary material was successfully fabricated via a facile and scalable tactic, which involved a morphology-inherited heat treating of Ni-3[Fe(CN)(6)](2)center dot xH(2)O prussian blue analogue nanocubes as self-sacrificial templates. Consequently, it was demonstrated that the NiFe NCs consisted of primary nanostructure units and interconnected pores, with an average size of (similar to)80 nm. When employed as adsorbents, the as-prepared NiFe NCs displayed remarkable adsorption capacities for heavy metal ions (232.3 mg g(-1) for As(V) and 350.71 mg g(-1) for Cr(VI)) and organic dyes (284.99 mg g(-1) for XO and 31.97 mg g(-1) for CR at 298 K). The resulting NiFe NCs further revealed efficient regeneration and reusability even after five consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles. The microscopic spectrum analysis demonstrated that the interaction between As(V) and NiFe NCs was mainly ascribed to the metal-oxide bonds (M-O) and hydroxyl groups (-OH), while Cr(VI) adsorption was in conjunction with the reduction reaction of Cr(VI) to Cr(Ill). Furthermore, the adsorption of organic dyes on NiFe NCs depended on the pore structure and molecule sizes of the organic dye molecules. These findings make cost-efficient NiFe NCs materials a powerful candidate for remediating water contaminated with inorganic and organic contaminants.

Abstract:In this work, water-soluble Fe 3 O 4 nanopowder with mesoporous structure was prepared by the thermal decomposition of Fe-urea complex ([Fe(NH 2 CONH 2 ) 6 ](NO 3 ) 3 ) in triethylene glycol (TEG), and the effects of reflux time and the concentration of precursor on the properties of Fe 3 O 4 nanopowder were investigated. In addition, the adsorptive properties of the material were studied using Cr(VI) as a target pollutant. Prolonging reflux time and increase in concentration of [Fe(NH 2 CONH 2 ) 6 ](NO 3 ) 3 in TEG can effectively improve the crystallinity and magnetic properties of the Fe 3 O 4 nanopowder. The saturation magnetization (Ms) increases from 21.4 to 48.5 emu/g when the reflux time increases from 2 to 20 h. The maximum adsorption capacity of the Fe 3 O 4 nanopowder for Cr(VI) is estimated to be 21.6 mg/g.
Preparation, characterization and performance of an electrospun carbon nanofiber mat applied in hexavalent chromium removal from aqueous solution

Abstract:Hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), a highly toxic oxyanion known as a carcinogen and mutagen, is an issue of concern due to its adverse impact on human health. Therefore, development of effective technologies and/or materials for Cr(VI) removal from water has been of great interest for researchers. In this study, an electrospun carbon nanofiber (CNF) mat was prepared via electrospinning polyacrylonitrile (PAN), followed by thermal pre-oxidation and carbonization. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation showed that the fiber diameter of the CNF with carbonization temperature of 950°C (CNF950) was about 266 nm. Potentiometric titration analysis demonstrated that the point of zero charge pH (pHpzc) of CNF950 was around 7.93. CNF950 demonstrated high adsorption capacity and fast adsorption kinetics for Cr(VI) at pH < 3. Langmuir isotherm calculations showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) on CNF950 was 118.8 mg/g at pH 2. The adsorption isotherm of Cr(VI) on CNF950 was well described by the Redlich-Peterson model, revealing that Cr(VI) adsorption was the result of a combination of monolayer and multilayer adsorption, depending on the initial Cr(VI) concentration. Solution pH greatly affected Cr(VI) adsorption onto CNF950 due to the electrostatic interaction, and the adsorption capacity was relatively high when pH was below 3. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed that the removal of Cr(VI) might be the result of a combination of redox reaction and electrostatic adsorption. The adsorption-saturated CNF950 could be regenerated by NaOH solution. This study extends the potential applicability of electrospun CNF mats for Cr(VI)-contaminated water purification.

Abstract:Reactive Brilliant Blue (KN-R) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) are two types of environmental pollutants that can be simultaneously released into the environment through industrial wastewater and domestic sewage, leading to severe combined pollution. Therefore, the simultaneous and effective removal of both KN-R and Cr(VI) is a critical challenge to reduce their environmental impacts. In this work, a waste disposable facial cleansing tissue (DFCT)-based nanosystem was fabricated to simultaneously remove KN-R and Cr(VI) from water. This nanosystem, called DFCT/MIL-100(Fe)/MoS 2 , incorporated polyhedral MIL-100(Fe) and flower-shaped MoS 2 onto the DFCT surface. MoS 2 exhibited high reduction and adsorption capabilities for Cr(VI), while MIL-100(Fe) possessed high adsorption abilities for KN-R through chelation. Moreover, DFCT had excellent immobilization capacity for both MIL-100(Fe) and MoS 2 , making it convenient for DFCT/MIL-100(Fe)/MoS 2 to be removed from water after treating KN-R and Cr(VI). The maximum removal efficiencies of DFCT/MIL-100(Fe)/MoS 2 for KN-R and Cr(VI) could reach 96.4 % and 97.9 % in 13 h and 5 h, respectively. The removal process fit the Langmuir (R 2 = 0.9956 of KN-R and R 2 = 0.9976 of Cr(VI)) and pseudo-second-order kinetic models (R 2 = 0.9876 of KN-R and R 2 = 0.9922 of Cr(VI)). Thermodynamic data indicated that the removal process of KN-R and Cr(VI) was spontaneous and endothermic. Furthermore, pot experiments result demonstrated that DFCT/MIL-100(Fe)/MoS 2 could reduce the harm of KN-R and Cr(VI) for water spinach and enhance the food safety. This work presents a valuable method for remediating KN-R/Cr(VI)-contaminated water with significant application potential.

Abstract:The discharge of chromium-containing wastewater in industrial production causes resource loss and damage to the ecological environment. Currently, various phenolamine materials have been used to remove chromium, but their harsh adsorption conditions bring many difficulties. For example, ideal chromium removal is only achieved at low pH. In this study, we synthesized catechol/m-phenylenediamine nanospheres (CMN) and combined CMN with Fe(II) for Cr removal from aqueous solutions, and Fe(II) comes from FeSO4·7H2O. CMN was characterized and analyzed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron (XPS). The adsorption performance was studied through a series of adsorption experiments. When C0 = 900 mg/L and pH = 6, the maximum adsorption capacity obtained in the experiment was 977.1 mg/g. It maintains excellent adsorption properties in acidic, neutral and alkaline environments. The results of the adsorption mechanism showed that the ultra-high adsorption capacity of CMN and Fe(II) for Cr was the result of the synergistic effect of adsorption and reduction, including electrostatic attraction, reduction and coprecipitation. CMN is expected to be an ideal adsorbent for Cr removal in aqueous solution due to its low cost, high biocompatibility and high efficiency in Cr removal.
Functionalized hollow MnFe2O4 nanospheres: design, applications and mechanism for efficient adsorption of heavy metal ions

Abstract:The spread of heavy metal ions has given rise to severe environmental problems, and eliminating heavy metal pollutants from the environment has become a difficult task facing the world. Developing a new material with efficient adsorption of heavy metal ions has become a hot focus of the academic community recently. This work presents a l-cysteine functionalized magnetite hollow MnFe2O4 nanosphere (H-MnFe2O4-Cys) material used to remove heavy metal ions in water, and this could be mass-produced using carbonized MnFe2O4 as a matrix, mixed acid as etchant and l-cysteine as the modification agent in a process-controllable reactor. The morphology of H-MnFe2O4-Cys could be effectively controlled by adjusting the etching time. The possible mechanism of the synthesis of H-MnFe2O4-Cys and the efficiency of the removal of Cr6+ and Pb2+ were discussed in detail. Based on the high magnetism, large interior cavities, high porosity, and abundant functional groups (-SH, -NH2), H-MnFe2O4-Cys exhibits excellent adsorption of heavy metal ions (Cr6+ and Pb2+ for instance) from wastewater. The high absorption efficiency and low manufacturing costs, coupled with the advantages of fast removal and magnetic recycling capability, make H-MnFe2O4-Cys a potential adsorbent for heavy metal ion contaminated water.
