Abstract:Lehner’s 1949 results on the jj-invariant showed high divisibility of the function’s coefficients by the primes p∈{2,3,5,7}p\in \{2,3,5,7\}. Expanding his results, we examine a canonical basis for the space of level pp modular functions holomorphic at the cusp 00. We show that the Fourier coefficients of these functions are often highly divisible by these same primes.

Divisors in Residue Classes Revisited

Abstract:In 1984, H. W. Lenstra described an algorithm finding divisors of $N$ congruent to $r \mod S$. When $S^3 > N$, this algorithm runs in polynomial time and hence factors $N$ in time $N^{1/3+o(1)}$. Lenstra's algorithm relies on a sign change in a constructed sequence and so cannot be adapted directly to larger euclidean number rings. We present a new method that generalizes to a larger class of euclidean rings and the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Z}[x]$. The algorithm is implemented and timed confirming its polynomial run time.

Dedekind sums: a combinatorial-geometric viewpoint

Abstract:The literature on Dedekind sums is vast. In this expository paper we show that there is a common thread to many generalizations of Dedekind sums, namely through the study of lattice point enumeration of rational polytopes. In particular, there are some natural finite Fourier series which we call Fourier-Dedekind sums, and which form the building blocks of the number of partitions of an integer from a finite set of positive integers. This problem also goes by the name of the `coin exchange problem'. Dedekind sums have enjoyed a resurgence of interest recently, from such diverse fields as topology, number theory, and combinatorial geometry. The Fourier-Dedekind sums we study here include as special cases generalized Dedekind sums studied by Berndt, Carlitz, Grosswald, Knuth, Rademacher, and Zagier. Our interest in these sums stems from the appearance of Dedekind's and Zagier's sums in lattice point count formulas for polytopes. Using some simple generating functions, we show that generalized Dedekind sums are natural ingredients for such formulas. As immediate `geometric' corollaries to our formulas, we obtain and generalize reciprocity laws of Dedekind, Zagier, and Gessel. Finally, we prove a polynomial-time complexity result for Zagier's higher-dimensional Dedekind sums.

Congruence properties modulo prime powers for a class of partition functions

Abstract:Let $p$ be prime, and let $p_{[1,p]}$ denote the function whose generating function is $\prod (1-q^n)^{-1}(1 - q^{pn})^{-1}$. This function and its generalizations $p_{[c^{\ell}, d^m]}$ are the subject of study in several recent papers. Let $\ell \geq 5$, and let $j\geq 1$ and let $p \in \{2, 3, 5 \}$. In this paper, we prove that the generating function for $p_{[1, p]}(n)$ in the progression $\beta_{p, \ell, j}$ modulo $\ell^j$ with $24\beta_{p, \ell, j} \equiv p + 1\pmod{\ell^j}$ lies in a Hecke-invariant subspace of type $\{\eta(Dz)\eta(Dpz)F(Dz) : F(z) \in M_{s}(\Gamma_0(p), \chi)\}$ for suitable $D\geq 1$, $s\geq 0$, and character $\chi$. When $p\in \{2, 3, 5\}$, we use the Hecke-invariance of these subspaces to prove, for distinct primes $\ell$ and $m\geq 5$ and $j\geq 1$, congruences of the form \[ p_{[1, p]}\left(\frac{\ell^jm^k n + 1}{D}\right)\equiv 0\pmod{\ell^j} \] for all $n\geq 1$ with $m\nmid n$, where $k$ is an explicitly computable constant depending on the modular forms in the invariant subspace. Our proofs requires adapting and extending analogous results on $p(n)$ in [1] and [19].

Abstract:Recently, Drema and N. Saikia (2023) and M. P. Saikia, Sarma, and Sellers (2023) proved several congruences modulo powers of $2$ for overpartition triples with odd parts. In this paper, we study further divisibility properties of overpartition $k$-tuples with odd parts using elementary means as well as properties of modular forms. In particular, we prove several congruences modulo multiples of $3$, and an infinite family of congruences modulo powers of $3$; we also prove some cases of a conjecture of Saikia, Sarma, and Sellers.

Abstract:DefineDn(x)=∑k=0n(nk)2xk(x+1)n−kforn=0,1,2,… andsn(x)=∑k=1n1n(nk)(nk−1)xk−1(x+1)n−kforn=1,2,3,…. Then Dn(1) is the n-th central Delannoy number Dn, and sn(1) is the n-th little Schröder number sn. In this paper we obtain some surprising arithmetic properties of Dn(x) and sn(x). We show that1n∑k=0n−1Dk(x)sk+1(x)∈Z[x(x+1)]for alln=1,2,3,…. Moreover, for any odd prime p and p-adic integer x≢0,−1(modp), we establish the supercongruence∑k=0p−1Dk(x)sk+1(x)≡0(modp2). As an application we confirm Conjecture 5.5 in [S14a], in particular we prove that1n∑k=0n−1TkMk(−3)n−1−k∈Zfor alln=1,2,3,…, where Tk is the k-th central trinomial coefficient and Mk is the k-th Motzkin number.
On the Divisibility of 7-Elongated Plane Partition Diamonds by Powers of 8

Abstract:In 2021 da Silva, Hirschhorn, and Sellers studied a wide variety of congruences for the $k$-elongated plane partition function $d_k(n)$ by various primes. They also conjectured the existence of an infinite congruence family modulo arbitrarily high powers of 2 for the function $d_7(n)$. We prove that such a congruence family exists -- indeed, for powers of 8. The proof utilizes only classical methods, i.e., integer polynomial manipulations in a single function, in contrast to all other known infinite congruence families for $d_k(n)$ which require more modern methods to prove.

Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $K$, $E/K$ be an elliptic curve, and $\phi:A\to E^m$ be an isogeny defined over $K$. Let $P\in A(K)$ be such that $\phi(P)=(Q_1,\dots, Q_m)$ with $\text{Rank}_\mathbb{Z}(\langle Q_1,\dots, Q_m\rangle)=1$. We will study a divisibility sequence related to the point $P$ and show its relation with elliptic divisibility sequences.

A note on odd partition numbers

Abstract:Ramanujan's celebrated partition congruences modulo $\ell\in \{5, 7, 11\}$ assert that $$ p(\ell n+\delta_{\ell})\equiv 0\pmod{\ell}, $$ where $0<\delta_{\ell}<\ell$ satisfies $24\delta_{\ell}\equiv 1\pmod{\ell}.$ By proving Subbarao's Conjecture, Radu showed that there are no such congruences when it comes to parity. There are infinitely many odd (resp. even) partition numbers in every arithmetic progression. For primes $\ell \geq 5,$ we give a new proof of the conclusion that there are infinitely many $m$ for which $p(\ell m+\delta_{\ell})$ is odd. This proof uses a generalization, due to the second author and Ramsey, of a result of Mazur in his classic paper on the Eisenstein ideal. We also refine a classical criterion of Sturm for modular form congruences, which allows us to show that the smallest such $m$ satisfies $m<(\ell^2-1)/24,$ representing a significant improvement to the previous bound.

Abstract:In 2002, Andrews, Lewis, and Lovejoy introduced the combinatorial objects which they called \emph{partitions with designated summands}. These are built by taking unrestricted integer partitions and designating exactly one of each occurrence of a part. In that same work, Andrews, Lewis, and Lovejoy also studied such partitions wherein all parts must be odd, and they denoted the number of such partitions of size $n$ by the function $PDO(n)$. Since then, numerous authors have proven a variety of divisibility properties satisfied by $PDO(n)$. Recently, the second author proved the following internal congruences satisfied by $PDO(n)$: For all $n\geq 0$, \begin{align*} PDO(4n) &\equiv PDO(n) \pmod{4},\\ PDO(16n) &\equiv PDO(4n) \pmod{8}. \end{align*} In this work, we significantly extend these internal congruence results by proving the following new infinite family of congruences: For all $k\geq 0$ and all $n\geq 0$, $$PDO(2^{2k+3}n) \equiv PDO(2^{2k+1}n) \pmod{2^{2k+3}}.$$ We utilize several classical tools to prove this family, including generating function dissections via the unitizing operator of degree two, various modular relations and recurrences involving a Hauptmodul on the classical modular curve $X_0(6)$, and an induction argument which provides the final step in proving the necessary divisibilities. It is notable that the construction of each $2$-dissection slice of our generating function bears an entirely different nature to those studied in the past literature.

Abstract:We consider the set of monic irreducible polynomials $P$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ such that the multiplicative order modulo $P$ of some a in $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ is divisible by a fixed positive integer $d$. Call $R_q(a,d)$ this set. We show the existence or non-existence of the density of $R_q(a,d)$ for three distinct notions of density. In particular, the sets $R_q(a,d)$ have a Dirichlet density. Under some assumptions, we prove simple formulas for the density values.

Abstract:Dedekind sums occur in the transformation behaviour of the logarithm of the Dedekind eta-function under substitutions from the modular group. In 1892, Dedekind showed a reciprocity relation for the Dedekind sums. Apostol generalized Dedekind sums by replacing the first Bernoulli function appearing in them by any Bernoulli functions and derived a reciprocity relation for the generalized Dedekind sums. In this paper, we consider poly-Dedekind sums which are obtained from the Dedekind sums by replacing the first Bernoulli function by any type 2 poly-Bernoulli functions of arbitrary indices and prove a reciprocity relation for the poly-Dedekind sums.

Abstract:We obtain new bounds, pointwisely and on average, for Dedekind sums $\mathsf{s}(\lambda,p)$ modulo a prime $p$ with $\lambda$ of small multiplicative order $d$ modulo $p$. Assuming the infinitude of Mersenne primes, the range of our results is optimal. Moreover, we relate high moments of $L(1,\chi)$ over subgroups of characters to some correlations of Dedekind sums and use our recent results to study these correlations.
