Abstract:In this article, we present an algorithm to compute the 9th Dedekind Number. The key aspects are the use of matrix multiplication and symmetries in the free distributive lattice, which are detected with techniques from Formal Concept Analysis.

Abstract:This preprint makes the claim of having computed the $9^{th}$ Dedekind Number. This was done by building an efficient FPGA Accelerator for the core operation of the process, and parallelizing it on the Noctua 2 Supercluster at Paderborn University. The resulting value is 286386577668298411128469151667598498812366. This value can be verified in two steps. We have made the data file containing the 490M results available, each of which can be verified separately on CPU, and the whole file sums to our proposed value.

Solving systems of equations on antichains for the computation of the ninth Dedekind Number

Abstract:We study systems of equations on antichains, together with a way to count the number of solutions. We start with a simple example, generalise and show more applications. One of the results was used in the recent computation of D(9), the others have potential to speed up existing techniques in the future. In fact, the result of two independent computations of D(9) were published nearly at the same time, in one of them the authors of the present paper were involved. D(n) counts the monotone Boolean functions or antichains on subsets of a set of n elements. The number rises doubly exponentially in the number of elements n, and until now no algorithm of a lower combinatorial complexity is known to compute D(n). In our computation, we use coefficients representing the number of solutions of a specific set of equations on antichains over a finite set. We refer to these coefficients as P-coefficients. These can be computed efficiently. In this paper, we generalise this coefficient and apply it to four different systems of equations. Finally we show how the coefficient was used in our computation of D(9), and how its generalisations can be used to compute D(n).

Abstract:The literature on Dedekind sums is vast. In this expository paper we show that there is a common thread to many generalizations of Dedekind sums, namely through the study of lattice point enumeration of rational polytopes. In particular, there are some natural finite Fourier series which we call Fourier-Dedekind sums, and which form the building blocks of the number of partitions of an integer from a finite set of positive integers. This problem also goes by the name of the `coin exchange problem'. Dedekind sums have enjoyed a resurgence of interest recently, from such diverse fields as topology, number theory, and combinatorial geometry. The Fourier-Dedekind sums we study here include as special cases generalized Dedekind sums studied by Berndt, Carlitz, Grosswald, Knuth, Rademacher, and Zagier. Our interest in these sums stems from the appearance of Dedekind's and Zagier's sums in lattice point count formulas for polytopes. Using some simple generating functions, we show that generalized Dedekind sums are natural ingredients for such formulas. As immediate `geometric' corollaries to our formulas, we obtain and generalize reciprocity laws of Dedekind, Zagier, and Gessel. Finally, we prove a polynomial-time complexity result for Zagier's higher-dimensional Dedekind sums.

Abstract:We solve an open problem proposed in the book "Computing the continuous discretely" written by Matthias Beck and Sinai Robins. That is, we provide a practical polynomial time algorithm for calculating Fourier-Dedekind sums. The algorithm is simple modular Barvinok's simplicial cone decomposition. It can be easily adapted into De Leora et al.'s LattE package, which gives a nice implementation of Barvinok's polynomial time algorithm.

Abstract:We study the arithmetical structures on the complete graph $K_9$. Our method is based on studying the solutions to writing the unit as a sum of 9 unit fractions. We work from the perspective of the Diophantine equation and use some elementary properties on the $p$-adic valuations. The proofs are assisted by trees and automata.

Abstract:Dedekind sums are arithmetic sums that were first introduced by Dedekind in the context of elliptic functions and modular forms, and later recognized to be surprisingly ubiquitous. Among the variations and generalizations introduced since, there is a construction of Dedekind sums for lattices in $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbf{R}). Building upon work of Asai, we prove the reciprocity law for these Dedekind sums, based on a concrete realization of the Euler class. As an application, we obtain an explicit formula expressing Dedekind sums for Hecke triangle groups in terms of continued fractions.

Abstract:This is a complement to my previous article "Advanced Determinant Calculus" (Séminaire Lotharingien Combin. 42 (1999), Article B42q, 67 pp.). In the present article, I share with the reader my experience of applying the methods described in the previous article in order to solve a particular problem from number theory (G. Almkvist, J. Petersson and the author, Experiment. Math. 12 (2003), 441-456). Moreover, I add a list of determinant evaluations which I consider as interesting, which have been found since the appearance of the previous article, or which I failed to mention there, including several conjectures and open problems.

On Formulas for Dedekind Sums and the Number of Lattice Points in Tetrahedra

Abstract:This paper explores a simple yet powerful relationship between the problem of counting lattice points and the computation of Dedekind sums. We begin by constructing and proving a sharp upper estimate for the number of lattice points in tetrahedra with some irrational coordinates for the vertices. Besides providing a sharper estimate, this upper bound (Theorem 1.1) becomes an equality (i.e. gives the exact number of lattice points) in a tetrahedron where the lengths of the edges divide each other. This equality condition can then be applied to the explicit computation of the classical Dedekind sums, a topic that is the central focus in the second half of our paper. In this half of the paper, we come up with a number of interesting results related to Dedekind sums, based on our upper estimate (Theorem 1.1). Among these findings, Theorem 1.9 and Theorem 1.10 deserve special attention, for they successfully generalize two of Apostol's formulas in [T.M. Apostol, Modular Functions and Dirichlet Series in Number Theory, Springer-Verlag, New York, 1997], and also directly imply the famous Reciprocity Law of Dedekind sums.

Abstract:Dedekind symbols are generalizations of the classical Dedekind sums (symbols). There is a natural isomorphism between the space of Dedekind symbols with Laurent polynomial reciprocity laws and the space of modular forms. We will define a new elliptic analogue of the Apostol-Dedekind sums. Then we will show that the newly defined sums generate all odd Dedekind symbols with Laurent polynomial reciprocity laws. Our construction is based on Machide's result on his elliptic Dedekind-Rademacher sums. As an application of our results, we discover Eisenstein series identities which generalize certain formulas by Ramanujan, van der Pol, Rankin and Skoruppa.

Abstract:Let $A=(a_1, a_2, ..., a_n)$ be relative prime positive integers with $a_i\geq 2$. The Frobenius number $g(A)$ is the greatest integer not belonging to the set $\big\{ \sum_{i=1}^na_ix_i\ |x_i\in \mathbb{N}\big\}$. The general Frobenius problem includes the determination of $g(A)$ and the related Sylvester number $n(A)$ and Sylvester sum $s(A)$. We present a new approach to the Frobenius problem. Basically, we transform the problem into an easier optimization problem. If the new problem can be solved explicitly, then we will be able to obtain a formula of $g(A)$. We illustrate the idea by giving concise proof of some existing formulas and finding some interesting new formulas of $g(A), n(A), s(A)$. Moreover, we find that MacMahon's partition analysis applies to give a new way of calculating $n(A), s(A)$ by using a rational function representation of a polynomial determined by $A$.

A Syzygial Method for Equidimensional Decomposition

Abstract:Based on a theorem by Vasconcelos, we give an algorithm for equidimensional decomposition of algebraic sets using syzygy computations via Gröbner bases. This algorithm avoids the use of elimination, homological algebra and processing the input equations one-by-one present in previous algorithms. We experimentally demonstrate the practical interest of our algorithm compared to the state of the art.

An algebraic combinatorial approach to Sylvester's denumerant

Abstract:For a positive integer sequence $\boldsymbol{a}=(a_1, \dots, a_{N+1})$, Sylvester's denumerant $E(\boldsymbol{a}; t)$ counts the number of nonnegative integer solutions to $\sum_{i=1}^{N+1} a_i x_i = t$ for a nonnegative integer $t$. It has been extensively studied and a well-known result asserts that $E(\boldsymbol{a}; t)$ is a quasi-polynomial in $t$ of degree $N$. A milestone is Baldoni et al.'s polynomial algorithm in 2015 for computing the top $k$ coefficients when $k$ is fixed. Their development uses heavily lattice point counting theory in computational geometry. In this paper, we explain their work in the context of algebraic combinatorics and simplify their computation. Our work is based on constant term method, Barvinok's unimodular cone decomposition, and recent results on fast computation of generalized Todd polynomials. We develop the algorithm \texttt{CT-Knapsack}, together with an implementation in \texttt{Maple}. Our algorithm avoids plenty of repeated computations and is hence faster.

Abstract:We study a generalization of the classical Dedekind sum that incorporates two Dirichlet characters and develop properties that generalize those of the classical Dedekind sum. By calculating the Fourier transform of this generalized Dedekind sum, we obtain an explicit formula for its second moment. Finally, we derive upper and lower bounds for the second moment with nearly identical orders of magnitude.

Abstract:Fourier-Dedekind sums are a generalization of Dedekind sums - important number-theoretical objects that arise in many areas of mathematics, including lattice point enumeration, signature defects of manifolds and pseudo random number generators. A remarkable feature of Fourier-Dedekind sums is that they satisfy a reciprocity law called Rademacher reciprocity. In this paper, we study several aspects of Fourier-Dedekind sums: properties of general Fourier-Dedekind sums, extensions of the reciprocity law, average behavior of Fourier-Dedekind sums, and finally, extrema of 2-dimensional Fourier-Dedekind sums. On properties of general Fourier-Dedekind sums we show that a general Fourier-Dedekind sum is simultaneously a convolution of simpler Fourier-Dedekind sums, and a linear combination of these with integer coefficients. We show that Fourier-Dedekind sums can be extended naturally to a group under convolution. We introduce "Reduced Fourier-Dedekind sums", which encapsulate the complexity of a Fourier-Dedekind sum, describe these in terms of generating functions, and give a geometric interpretation. Next, by finding interrelations among Fourier-Dedekind sums, we extend the range on which Rademacher reciprocity Theorem holds. We go on to study the average behavior of Fourier-Dedekind sums, showing that the average behavior of a Fourier-Dedekind sum is described concisely by a lower-dimensional, simpler Fourier-Dedekind sum. Finally, we focus our study on 2-dimensional Fourier-Dedekind sums. We find tight upper and lower bounds on these for a fixed $t$, estimates on the argmax and argmin, and bounds on the sum of their "reciprocals".
