Abstract:Modular reduction is the basic operation of cryptographic systems. The Barrett's algorithm and Montgomery's algorithm are widely used nowadays and they are both based on pre-computation. In the field of elliptic curve cryptosystem (ECC) over GF(2m), the reduction polynomials recommended by SEC have few items and the degree of second item is much less than that of the first one. Making use of this characteristic, the paper presents a new method to accelerate modular reduction without pre-computation which speeds up modular reduction by 10-30 times over GF(2m) and speeds up ECC point multiplication by 40%-50%. This algorithm has been implemented in a high-speed public-key cipher accelerator

Abstract:We solve an open problem proposed in the book "Computing the continuous discretely" written by Matthias Beck and Sinai Robins. That is, we provide a practical polynomial time algorithm for calculating Fourier-Dedekind sums. The algorithm is simple modular Barvinok's simplicial cone decomposition. It can be easily adapted into De Leora et al.'s LattE package, which gives a nice implementation of Barvinok's polynomial time algorithm.

Abstract:The literature on Dedekind sums is vast. In this expository paper we show that there is a common thread to many generalizations of Dedekind sums, namely through the study of lattice point enumeration of rational polytopes. In particular, there are some natural finite Fourier series which we call Fourier-Dedekind sums, and which form the building blocks of the number of partitions of an integer from a finite set of positive integers. This problem also goes by the name of the `coin exchange problem'. Dedekind sums have enjoyed a resurgence of interest recently, from such diverse fields as topology, number theory, and combinatorial geometry. The Fourier-Dedekind sums we study here include as special cases generalized Dedekind sums studied by Berndt, Carlitz, Grosswald, Knuth, Rademacher, and Zagier. Our interest in these sums stems from the appearance of Dedekind's and Zagier's sums in lattice point count formulas for polytopes. Using some simple generating functions, we show that generalized Dedekind sums are natural ingredients for such formulas. As immediate `geometric' corollaries to our formulas, we obtain and generalize reciprocity laws of Dedekind, Zagier, and Gessel. Finally, we prove a polynomial-time complexity result for Zagier's higher-dimensional Dedekind sums.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider some hybrid Diophantine equations of addition and multiplication. We first improve a result on new Hilbert-Waring problem. Then we consider the equation \begin{equation} \begin{cases} A+B=C ABC=D^n \end{cases} \end{equation} where $A,B,C,D,n \in\ZZ_{+}$ and $n\geq3$, which may be regarded as a generalization of Fermat's equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$. When $\gcd(A,B,C)=1$, $(1)$ is equivalent to Fermat's equation, which means it has no positive integer solutions. We discuss several cases for $\gcd(A,B,C)=p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime. In particular, for $k=1$ we prove that $(1)$ has no nonzero integer solutions when $n=3$ and we conjecture that it is also true for any prime $n>3$. Finally, we consider equation $(1)$ in quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{t})$ for $n=3$.

Abstract:We study a generalization of the classical Dedekind sum that incorporates two Dirichlet characters and develop properties that generalize those of the classical Dedekind sum. By calculating the Fourier transform of this generalized Dedekind sum, we obtain an explicit formula for its second moment. Finally, we derive upper and lower bounds for the second moment with nearly identical orders of magnitude.

Abstract:We introduce the inversion polynomial for Dedekind sums $f_b(x)=\sum x^{\operatorname{inv}(a,b)}$ to study the number of $s(a,b)$ which have the same value for given $b$. We prove several properties of this polynomial and present some conjectures. We also introduce connections between Kloosterman sums and the inversion polynomial evaluated at particular roots of unity. Finally, we improve on previously known bounds for the second highest value of the Dedekind sum and provide a conjecture for a possible generalization. Lastly, we include a new restriction on equal Dedekind sums based on the reciprocity formula.

Abstract:We obtain two new algorithms for partial fraction decompositions; the first is over algebraically closed fields, and the second is over general fields. These algorithms takes $O(M^2)$ time, where $M$ is the degree of the denominator of the rational function. The new algorithms use less storage space, and are suitable for parallel programming. We also discuss full partial fraction decompositions.

Abstract:In ISSAC 2017, van der Hoeven and Larrieu showed that evaluating a polynomial P in GF(q)[x] of degree <n at all n-th roots of unity in GF($q^d$) can essentially be computed d-time faster than evaluating Q in GF($q^d$)[x] at all these roots, assuming GF($q^d$) contains a primitive n-th root of unity. Termed the Frobenius FFT, this discovery has a profound impact on polynomial multiplication, especially for multiplying binary polynomials, which finds ample application in coding theory and cryptography. In this paper, we show that the theory of Frobenius FFT beautifully generalizes to a class of additive FFT developed by Cantor and Gao-Mateer. Furthermore, we demonstrate the power of Frobenius additive FFT for q=2: to multiply two binary polynomials whose product is of degree <256, the new technique requires only 29,005 bit operations, while the best result previously reported was 33,397. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that FFT-based multiplication outperforms Karatsuba and the like at such a low degree in terms of bit-operation count.

Double Index Calculus Algorithm: Faster Solving Discrete Logarithm Problem in Finite Prime Field

Abstract:Solving the discrete logarithm problem in a finite prime field is an extremely important computing problem in modern cryptography. The hardness of solving the discrete logarithm problem in a finite prime field is the security foundation of numerous cryptography schemes. In this paper, we propose the double index calculus algorithm to solve the discrete logarithm problem in a finite prime field. Our algorithm is faster than the index calculus algorithm, which is the state-of-the-art algorithm for solving the discrete logarithm problem in a finite prime field. Empirical experiment results indicate that our algorithm could be more than a 30-fold increase in computing speed than the index calculus algorithm when the bit length of the order of prime field is 70 bits. In addition, our algorithm is more general than the index calculus algorithm. Specifically, when the base of the target discrete logarithm problem is not the multiplication generator, the index calculus algorithm may fail to solve the discrete logarithm problem while our algorithm still can work.

Abstract:We generalize recent matrix-based factorization theorems for Lambert series generating functions generating the coefficients $(f \ast 1)(n)$ for some arithmetic function $f$. Our new factorization theorems provide analogs to these established expansions generating sums of the form $\sum_{d: (d,n)=1} f(d)$ (type I) and the Anderson-Apostol sums $\sum_{d|(m,n)} f(d) g(n/d)$ (type II) for any arithmetic functions $f$ and $g$. Our treatment of the type II sums includes a matrix-based factorization method relating the partition function $p(n)$ to arbitrary arithmetic functions $f$. We also conclude the last section of the article by directly expanding new formulas for an arithmetic function $g$ by the type II sums using discrete Fourier transforms for functions over inputs of greatest common divisors and by suitably defined orthogonal polynomial sequences whose weight function we can define by a discrete time Fourier transform (DTFT) involving the partition function $p(n)$. There are numerous applications and special cases of our new results which we are able to cite as examples in the article. Particular cases of the applications we give in the article include new identities for Euler's totient function, the Ramanujan sums $c_q(n)$, the generalized sum-of-divisors functions, the Mertens function which is the summatory function of the Möbius function, and the cyclotomic polynomials.

A Combinatorial Approach to Frobenius Numbers of Some Special Sequences (Complete Version)

Abstract:Let $A=(a_1, a_2, ..., a_n)$ be relative prime positive integers with $a_i\geq 2$. The Frobenius number $g(A)$ is the greatest integer not belonging to the set $\big\{ \sum_{i=1}^na_ix_i\ |x_i\in \mathbb{N}\big\}$. The general Frobenius problem includes the determination of $g(A)$ and the related Sylvester number $n(A)$ and Sylvester sum $s(A)$. We present a new approach to the Frobenius problem. Basically, we transform the problem into an easier optimization problem. If the new problem can be solved explicitly, then we will be able to obtain a formula of $g(A)$. We illustrate the idea by giving concise proof of some existing formulas and finding some interesting new formulas of $g(A), n(A), s(A)$. Moreover, we find that MacMahon's partition analysis applies to give a new way of calculating $n(A), s(A)$ by using a rational function representation of a polynomial determined by $A$.

Abstract:We obtain new complexity bounds for computing a triangular integral basis of a number field or a function field. We reach for function fields a softly linear cost with respect to the size of the output when the residual characteristic is zero or big enough. Analogous results are obtained for integral basis of fractional ideals, key ingredients towards fast computation of Riemann-Roch spaces. The proof is based on the recent fast OM algorithm of the authors and on the MaxMin algorithm of Stainsby, together with optimal truncation bounds and a precise complexity analysis.

Fourier-Dedekind Sums and an Extension of Rademacher Reciprocity

Abstract:Fourier-Dedekind sums are a generalization of Dedekind sums - important number-theoretical objects that arise in many areas of mathematics, including lattice point enumeration, signature defects of manifolds and pseudo random number generators. A remarkable feature of Fourier-Dedekind sums is that they satisfy a reciprocity law called Rademacher reciprocity. In this paper, we study several aspects of Fourier-Dedekind sums: properties of general Fourier-Dedekind sums, extensions of the reciprocity law, average behavior of Fourier-Dedekind sums, and finally, extrema of 2-dimensional Fourier-Dedekind sums. On properties of general Fourier-Dedekind sums we show that a general Fourier-Dedekind sum is simultaneously a convolution of simpler Fourier-Dedekind sums, and a linear combination of these with integer coefficients. We show that Fourier-Dedekind sums can be extended naturally to a group under convolution. We introduce "Reduced Fourier-Dedekind sums", which encapsulate the complexity of a Fourier-Dedekind sum, describe these in terms of generating functions, and give a geometric interpretation. Next, by finding interrelations among Fourier-Dedekind sums, we extend the range on which Rademacher reciprocity Theorem holds. We go on to study the average behavior of Fourier-Dedekind sums, showing that the average behavior of a Fourier-Dedekind sum is described concisely by a lower-dimensional, simpler Fourier-Dedekind sum. Finally, we focus our study on 2-dimensional Fourier-Dedekind sums. We find tight upper and lower bounds on these for a fixed $t$, estimates on the argmax and argmin, and bounds on the sum of their "reciprocals".
