Abstract:Reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) are widely used in many water treatment processes, such as seawater and brackish water desalination. Membranes with improved separation performance and antifouling properties can be prepared by incorporating nanoparticles into membrane matrix. A number of nanomaterials can serve as potential water transport channels and modify the structure and surface properties of the membrane thin film layers. Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) can benefit from the high performance of both the organic matrix and inorganic fillers, which are believed to be the next generation of novel membrane materials. Recent advances of the nanoparticle-filled RU, NF and forward osmosis (FO) MMMs are reviewed in this paper. The effects of nanomaterials with various properties on membrane structure and separation performance are discussed, including zeolites, nanotubes, mesoporous materials, pure metal, metallic oxides, graphene oxide and aquaporin. The dispersibility of nanofillers in MMMs and their compatibility with polymer matrix can be improved by surface modification. Different methods of nanoparticle addition and membrane preparation are also illustrated in detail. Based on the analysis of the recent works, the membrane formation and separation mechanisms are explored and the main problems of membrane synthesis and application are summarized. Finally, the future development of RO, NF and FO MMMs for water treatment process is suggested.

Abstract:Using the alumina powders with different average particle sizes as main raw materials, the tubular ceramic membrane support was prepared by extrusion method, and the membrane interlayer (thickness ~20 μm) and top layer (thickness ~5 μm) were deposited on the membrane support surface by dip coating process. In order to improve the separation performance of the membrane, it was modified with FAS, nano metal oxide or graphene oxide, respectively. During the oil/water treatment, the water flux of the modified membrane is higher about 27.8–43% than that of the original membrane. The modified membrane has higher oil rejection (99%) than that of the original membrane. The results show the modification has an important role on the oil/water separation performance of the membrane.

Abstract:As an important technology for drinking water safety guarantee, membrane separation has its promising application prospects in drinking water treatment. Due to relatively low fabrication cost, polymeric membrane has been widely studied and used in membrane separation technology for drinking water treatment. However, some disadvantages limit its further application, including poor physical, chemical and thermodynamic stability and short lifespan. Therefore the study of ceramic membrane with prominent material advantages becomes especially important. In this review, the classification and characteristics of ceramic membrane were introduced firstly; then the mechanisms of filtration and membrane fouling were analyzed, and the research progress of ceramic membrane technology, combined process of pretreatments and ceramic membrane, and surface modification technology for ceramic membrane in drinking water treatment were discussed;further the prospect of ceramic membrane technology in drinking water treatment was presented. The optimization of preparation technology, enhancement of the study of mechanisms for membrane fouling and pretreatments, and the optimization of hybrid processes are becoming important research directions of ceramic membrane technology for drinking water treatment.

Abstract:<p>Application of ceramic membrane technology in water and wastewater is rapidly growing. Inherent advantages of ceramic membrane including chemical/thermal stability, low fouling propensity and long lifespan make ceramic membrane technology attractive, and the ceramic membrane market is expected to achieve a compound annual growth rate of 12%. Ceramic membranes could be integrated with advanced oxidation processes such as <em>in-situ</em> ozonation that cannot be applied in the case of polymeric membrane due to their potential degradation during long-term exposure. In addition, the hybrid-ceramic membrane processes such as ceramic membrane bioreactor are superior to polymeric counterparts due to higher flux, higher pollutant removal, lower fouling rate and higher cleaning efficiency. Although ceramic membrane has high capital cost, life-cycle costs of ceramic and polymeric plants are comparable. Notably, full-scale ceramic membrane water/wastewater treatment plants have been installed in many countries such as Japan, USA, Singapore and United Kingdom. Given the attractiveness of this technology, performance of ceramic membrane is critically reviewed with a focus on their applications in water and wastewater treatment under mild conditions. In addition, fouling mechanisms and control strategies are elucidated and are compared with polymeric membranes. Importantly, for the first time, the status of full-scale applications and market prospects of ceramic membranes are critically analysed to show their future potential. Lastly, future research directions such as development of cost-effective ceramic membranes, understanding the biofouling evolution and economic evaluation of physicochemical processes for fouling control are proposed.</p>

Abstract:Porous ceramic membranes can offer a more robust and long-term alternative to polymeric membranes in aqueous microfiltration and ultrafiltration processes. Their superior chemical, thermal and mechanical properties mean that not only can they be operated under harsh conditions, they can also be backwashed and cleaned with strong cleaning agents as well as sterilized at high temperatures, offering reliable performance over long periods of time. These ceramic membranes are conventionally fabricated via multiple layer deposition steps on top of a membrane substrate followed by several heat treatment sessions to achieve the desired final selectivity for micro- or ultrafiltration. Because of the large number of steps required, conventional methods are time- and energy-consuming, contributing to the high capital costs of ceramic membranes. The combined phase-inversion and sintering technique is an emerging method for the fabrication of ceramic membranes and considerably reduces the number of steps required by eliminating the need to deposit layers on a substrate; thus, only one heat treatment step is required. Furthermore, it can produce membranes with a wide range of unique microstructures, which can be tailored for the application. The ability to produce much thinner hollow-fibre membranes can improve packing density considerably compared with the commonly used flat-sheet and tubular modules. This simpler fabrication cycle can potentially reduce the costs of ceramic membranes, but currently further research and development is required before commercialization of this method can commence. Potential applications of ceramic membranes for water treatment include the production of drinking water, treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater, treatment of produced water and use in the food and beverage industries. Successful implementation of ceramic membranes in these industries has been achieved with stable and long-term operation but the high capital cost of ceramic membranes remains the main deterrent to large-scale water treatment. However, anticipated cheaper ceramic membranes with higher packing densities of hollow-fibre configuration will increase applications in municipalities.

Abstract:Membrane technologies have broad applications in the removal of contaminants from drinking water and wastewater. In recent decades, ceramic membrane has made rapid progress in industrial/municipal wastewater treatment and drinking water treatment owing to their advantageous properties over conventional polymeric membrane. The beneficial characteristics of ceramic membranes include fouling resistance, high permeability, good recoverability, chemical stability, and long life time, which have found applications with the recent innovations in both fabrication methods and nanotechnology. Therefore, ceramic membranes hold great promise for potential applications in water treatment. This paper mainly reviews the progress in the research and development of ceramic membranes, with key focus on porous ceramic membranes and nanomaterial-functionalized ceramic membranes for nanofiltration or catalysis. The current state of the available ceramic membranes in industry and academia, and their potential advantages, limitations and applications are reviewed. The last section of the review focuses on ceramic membrane fouling and the efforts towards ceramic membrane fouling mitigation. The advances in ceramic membrane technologies have rarely been widely reviewed before, therefore, this review could be served as a guide for the new entrants to the field, as well to the established researchers.

Abstract:Ceramic membranes owning the advantages of mechanical and chemical stability, anti-fouling, high permeability, and good recoverability have achieved rapid development for industrial separation and pollution control. To further improve the separation efficiency and minimize the energy consumption, increasing attention is paid to the rational design and engineering of microstructures of ceramic membranes. Compared to the typical particulate powders, one-dimensional (1D) materials have been demonstrated as a competitive player that can both simply the preparation process and improve the filtration efficiency of ceramic membranes. This review will firstly introduce the types of 1D micro-/nano-materials that have been intensively used in the fabrication of ceramic membranes. Then, the benefits and concerns of these 1D materials in ceramic membranes will be detailed successively from their roles in the support, intermediate layer and top layer. Finally, the future research focus and development direction were prospected.

Abstract:In this study, a novel ceramic membrane was prepared with white corundum powders (CM), and its fouling behavior was evaluated in comparison with an alumina membrane (AM). Although the two membranes possessed almost the same pore size and porosity, the pure water permeability of CM was substantially lower than that of AM, possible due to the irregular pore structure of CM membrane. However, when employed in MBR, the CM exhibited much better antifouling performance with significantly decreased TMP development rate. Dissolved organic foulants (i.e. polysaccharides, proteins and DOC) extracted from the membrane surface of CM was shown to be much lower than that from AM. XDLVO analysis also demonstrated the repulsion force between sludge and CM membrane was stronger. More interestingly, largely different microorganism population was observed to form on the two membranes, which might contribute to the alleviation of CM membrane fouling in MBR. This work provides an easy but effective strategy for improving the antifouling ability of ceramic membrane in MBR.

Abstract:A test for separation characteristics of bathing wastewater by ceramic nanofiltration was carried out;the effects of operating time,and parameters such as pressure,temperature and pH value on the quality of the permeate and the flux of the membrane were discussed.The method of membrane cleaning was also preliminarily studied.The results showed that the ceramic nanofiltration membrane could remove COD,TOC,and turbidity of the bathing wastewater effectively,and washing the membarane with water,NaOH and HNO3 as cleaning agent could achieve better effect in this test.

Abstract:Experimental study was conducted for removal of particles from water with ceramic membrane filtration.Two kinds of membranes were used: the pore size is 200nm and the pore size is 50nm.The experiments were finished under three operation pressure: 0.1MPa,0.2MPa and 0.3MPa.Filtration performance was assessed with two parameters as turbidity and particle counts.The result showed that the turbidity of the raw water rang 10NTU to 1000NTU,the turbidities of the effluents were all below 0.12NTU.Most of the particle sizes in the effluents were below 4μm.The turbidity of the raw water affected the flux seriously.The operation pressure and the pore size of the membrane didn't affect the turbidity of the effluents,but affected the particle counts and the particle sizes of the effluents.When the turbidity of the water is very low,particle counts can show the changes of the particles in the water more exactly thanturbidity.
