Abstract:Using the alumina powders with different average particle sizes as main raw materials, the tubular ceramic membrane support was prepared by extrusion method, and the membrane interlayer (thickness ~20 μm) and top layer (thickness ~5 μm) were deposited on the membrane support surface by dip coating process. In order to improve the separation performance of the membrane, it was modified with FAS, nano metal oxide or graphene oxide, respectively. During the oil/water treatment, the water flux of the modified membrane is higher about 27.8–43% than that of the original membrane. The modified membrane has higher oil rejection (99%) than that of the original membrane. The results show the modification has an important role on the oil/water separation performance of the membrane.

Abstract:Nanotechnology-enabled water treatment is a promising solution to the challenges in the current water treatment processes, particularly to the crisis of persistent and trace emerging contaminants. Taking the integrated process coupling membrane filtration with ozonation that has been developed and widely applied in field as examples, we analyze the scientific rationale of catalytic ceramic membranes and nano-effects in membrane pores, which are considered as nano-reactors. The confinement effects are analyzed from four aspects, including the high specific surface area in membrane nano-pores, enrichment of reactants and enhancement of reaction kinetics in nano-pores, organized arrangement of water molecules in nano-reactors and the role of electric double layer during reactions. For each aspect, we build the correlation between the confinement effects and the phenomena in membrane nano-pores. Moreover, we present opportunities for the future research on nanotechnology-enabled water treatment.

Abstract:Ceramic membranes offer considerable promise for future industrial applications due to their superior chemical, mechanical, and thermal stabilities, resistance to harsh operating conditions, and long‐term operating processes. However, several bottlenecks still limit their commercial scale‐up in filtration and separation applications, including brittleness, the high costs of conventional ceramic materials, and fouling. Despite several articles in the literature on ceramic membranes, this review focuses on recent progress, technical strategies, and methods to mitigate these limitations that significantly impact their separation and filtration performance. The use of alternative naturally occurring ceramic materials to mitigate the high costs of conventional ceramic materials is discussed, as well as strategies to improve the mechanical strength of brittle ceramic membranes by increasing sintering temperatures and using support materials. Additionally, advanced techniques to mitigate fouling accumulation and wetting in the pores and on the ceramic membrane surface, such as increasing membrane hydrophilicity and surface modification, are addressed. Despite progress in technical solutions for mitigating the bottlenecks of ceramic membranes, these limitations persist. Abstract:Abstract Ceramic membranes are gaining rapid traction in water and wastewater treatment applications due to their inherent advantages, such as chemical/thermal stability, low fouling propensity, and extended lifespan. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of ceramic membranes, exploring their composition, fabrication techniques, filtration principles, and diverse applications. Various types of ceramic membranes, including alumina, zirconia, titania, silica, and zeolite, are discussed. As global challenges related to water scarcity and pollution intensify, the implementation of ceramic membranes offers a sustainable and effective approach for water and wastewater treatment and safeguarding vital water resources. Despite the dominance of polymeric membranes in the field, the constant pursuit of reduced production costs and the apparent benefits of ceramic membrane are fueling their rapid growth. The review also examines applications that demonstrate the effectiveness of pressure-driven ceramic membrane technology for treating industrial wastewaters from diverse industries, including textile, pharmaceutical, and petrochemical. While the technology shows efficiency in various wastewater treatment scenarios, future research should focus on optimizing investment costs through new fabrication technologies, improving selectivity, permeability, and packing densities, minimizing fouling, and proposing scale-up strategies based on experimental research results. The collective findings reveal the potential of ceramic membranes to revolutionize wastewater treatment and environmental remediation.

Abstract:Membrane technologies have broad applications in the removal of contaminants from drinking water and wastewater. In recent decades, ceramic membrane has made rapid progress in industrial/municipal wastewater treatment and drinking water treatment owing to their advantageous properties over conventional polymeric membrane. The beneficial characteristics of ceramic membranes include fouling resistance, high permeability, good recoverability, chemical stability, and long life time, which have found applications with the recent innovations in both fabrication methods and nanotechnology. Therefore, ceramic membranes hold great promise for potential applications in water treatment. This paper mainly reviews the progress in the research and development of ceramic membranes, with key focus on porous ceramic membranes and nanomaterial-functionalized ceramic membranes for nanofiltration or catalysis. The current state of the available ceramic membranes in industry and academia, and their potential advantages, limitations and applications are reviewed. The last section of the review focuses on ceramic membrane fouling and the efforts towards ceramic membrane fouling mitigation. The advances in ceramic membrane technologies have rarely been widely reviewed before, therefore, this review could be served as a guide for the new entrants to the field, as well to the established researchers.

Abstract:Ceramic membranes, well-known for their high stability and resistance, are crucial in water filtration and treatment applications. However, they encounter challenges related to fabrication costs and operational lifespan. This review summarizes efforts to use low-cost ceramic materials, primarily those abundant in alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) and silica (SiO 2 ), as alternatives to overcome cost barriers. While these materials exhibit promising separation properties, their commercial viability is hindered by short lifespans and structural defects. Researchers have responded with multifaceted strategies to enhance the performance and durability of low-cost ceramic membranes. The article systematically delineates strategies to improve ceramic membranes, emphasizing increased ceramic content in low-cost materials. This approach enhances thermal and chemical stability, which is crucial for effective water treatment while boosting porosity, water flow, and filtration capacity. The review explores strategies to eliminate fouling and wetting resistance, including hierarchical structures, air pocket enhancement, and surface functionalization. Each technique presents distinct advantages and challenges, necessitating careful tailoring to specific application requirements. Durability is further addressed through two primary strategies, namely incorporating micro/nanomaterials and fabricating dual-layer ceramic membranes. While offering increased mechanical strength and separation performance, these methods pose challenges regarding material incorporation complexity and potential cost escalation. Achieving a balance between advantages and drawbacks is crucial for practical water filtration and treatment processes. In addition, the current study has explored the potential of strategies to enhance low-cost ceramic membranes, making them more competitive in water filtration and treatment processes.

Abstract:Ceramic membranes have been increasingly employed in water treatment owing to their merits such as high-stability, anti-oxidation, long lifespan and environmental friendliness. The application of ceramic membranes mainly focuses on microfiltration and ultrafiltration processes, and some precise separation can be achieved by introducing novel porous materials with superior selectivity. Recently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have developed a wide spectrum of applications in the fields of the environment, energy, water treatment and gas separation due to the diversity and tunable advantages of metal clusters and organic ligands. Although the issue of water stability in MOF materials inhibits the development of MOF membranes in water treatment, researchers still overcome many obstacles to advance the application of MOF membranes in water treatment processes. To the best of our knowledge, there is still a lack of a reviews on the development process and prospects of ceramic-based MOF membranes for water treatment. Therefore, in this review, we mainly summarize the fabrication method for ceramic-based MOF membranes and their application in water treatment, such as water/salt separation, pollutant separation, heavy metal separation, etc. Following this, based on the high structural, thermal and chemical stability of ceramic substrates, and the high controllability of MOF materials, the superiority and insufficient use of ceramic-based MOF membranes in the field of water treatment are critically discussed.

Abstract:Porous ceramic membranes can offer a more robust and long-term alternative to polymeric membranes in aqueous microfiltration and ultrafiltration processes. Their superior chemical, thermal and mechanical properties mean that not only can they be operated under harsh conditions, they can also be backwashed and cleaned with strong cleaning agents as well as sterilized at high temperatures, offering reliable performance over long periods of time. These ceramic membranes are conventionally fabricated via multiple layer deposition steps on top of a membrane substrate followed by several heat treatment sessions to achieve the desired final selectivity for micro- or ultrafiltration. Because of the large number of steps required, conventional methods are time- and energy-consuming, contributing to the high capital costs of ceramic membranes. The combined phase-inversion and sintering technique is an emerging method for the fabrication of ceramic membranes and considerably reduces the number of steps required by eliminating the need to deposit layers on a substrate; thus, only one heat treatment step is required. Furthermore, it can produce membranes with a wide range of unique microstructures, which can be tailored for the application. The ability to produce much thinner hollow-fibre membranes can improve packing density considerably compared with the commonly used flat-sheet and tubular modules. This simpler fabrication cycle can potentially reduce the costs of ceramic membranes, but currently further research and development is required before commercialization of this method can commence. Potential applications of ceramic membranes for water treatment include the production of drinking water, treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater, treatment of produced water and use in the food and beverage industries. Successful implementation of ceramic membranes in these industries has been achieved with stable and long-term operation but the high capital cost of ceramic membranes remains the main deterrent to large-scale water treatment. However, anticipated cheaper ceramic membranes with higher packing densities of hollow-fibre configuration will increase applications in municipalities.

Abstract:Membrane-based separation is an essential part of water purification, however, traditional polymeric membranes suffer from a trade-off limitation between selectivity and permeability. In recent years, owing to high porosity and adjustable pore structure, 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic framework (COFs), and zeolites exhibit promising potential in the separation membranes to break the trade-off law. In this comprehensive review, we endeavour to present the state-of-art progress on 2D MOFs , COFs and zeolites nanosheets as ideal candidates for membrane separations with a particular emphasis on the water-related applications. Recent researches on the typical fabrication methods for the above 2D porous nanosheets are summarized. The assembling strategies into pure 2D porous membranes involve in-situ growth and layer stacking assembly, while 2D MMMs normally employ phase-inversion or interfacial polymerization methods. Subsequently, particular attention is devoted to introduce the latest advances on these novel membranes for water-related separation processes, including desalination, heavy metals removal, oil/water separation, dyes, pharmaceutical and agricultural pollutants separations. Finally, challenges and future perspective for the industrial implementation of these membranes are pointed out. This review is expected to provide an insight view for the production and applications of highly efficient 2D porous membranes in water-related separations.

Abstract:Porous ceramic membranes with low-cost and high performance are desirable in industrial filtration field. To improve the performance while reducing the production cost, various measures were developed, however, pre-sintering of supports, preparation of membrane-forming suspensions and adoption of extensive organic additives that involved were adverse to cost reduction. Herein, cost-effective one-step co-pressing and co-sintering technique was proposed to prepare asymmetric ceramic membranes. The results revealed that pore parameters and performance of the fabricated membranes could be adjusted by altering mole ratio of Al 2 O 3 to SiO 2 (Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 ) in the support and sintering temperature. The influence of supports on the permeation flux of membranes surpassed that of the parameters of membrane layer. Additionally, the oil rejection rate of the membranes exceeded 96 % within 2 min and even reached 100 % (~60 min), the water flux and steady-state feed flux were 1330–1730 L·m −2 ·h −1 and 470–620 L·m −2 ·h −1 at 1 bar, respectively. Moreover, cake filtration was the main fouling mechanism throughout the separation process. This research provides a feasible and simple method for preparing low-cost high-performance ceramic membrane for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Great progress in the development of low-cost ceramic membranes from alternative materials have been achieved recently towards various application especially water and wastewater treatment. However, their significance has not been fully recognized and understood especially in term of their microstructural analysis such as formation of grain growth and microcracks. This review paper summarizes fabrication method, alternative materials, microstructure, wettability, mechanical properties and application of low-cost ceramic membrane. The fabrication method including slip casting, tape casting, extrusion, pressing method and phase inversion technique are described. Alternative materials used in low-cost ceramic membrane fabrication are discussed and categorized into clays, agricultural waste, industrial waste and animal bone waste. The mechanisms of morphology formation, microstructure and wettability properties are analysed. Modification strategies for the surface of low-cost ceramic membrane are discussed, and classified into modification for separation application, modification for photocatalytic application and modification for membrane distillation and membrane contactor system. Modification improves the membrane structure by changing the pore size, porosity and wettability properties of low-cost ceramic membranes. Mechanical properties of low-cost ceramic membranes are also discussed in detail towards several mechanism, like grain growth phenomenon and formation of microcracks which also considered as membrane defects. Grain growth phenomenon can be divided into normal and abnormal grain growth. Meanwhile, formation of microcracks could be occurred in single-phase polycrystalline ceramics that have anisotropic grains or biphasic polycrystalline grains. The application of low-cost ceramic membrane in seawater desalination, oily wastewater treatment, heavy metal adsorption, textile separation and photocatalytic application are reviewed. Finally, some possible opportunities and challenges for further development of low-cost ceramic membrane are pointed out.

Abstract:Sustainable and affordable supply of clean, safe, and adequate water is one of the most challenging issues facing the world. Membrane separation technology is one of the most cost-effective and widely applied technologies for water purification. Polymeric membranes such as cellulose-based (CA) membranes and thin-film composite (TFC) membranes have dominated the industry since 1980. Although further development of polymeric membranes for better performance is laborious, the research findings and sustained progress in inorganic membrane development have grown fast and solve some remaining problems. In addition to conventional ceramic metal oxide membranes, membranes prepared by graphene oxide (GO), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and mixed matrix materials (MMMs) have attracted enormous attention due to their desirable properties such as tunable pore structure, excellent chemical, mechanical, and thermal tolerance, good salt rejection and/or high water permeability. This review provides insight into synthesis approaches and structural properties of recent reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes which are used to retain dissolved species such as heavy metals, electrolytes, and inorganic salts in various aqueous solutions. A specific focus has been placed on introducing and comparing water purification performance of different classes of polymeric and ceramic membranes in related water treatment industries. Furthermore, the development challenges and research opportunities of organic and inorganic membranes are discussed and the further perspectives are analyzed.

Abstract:Membrane technologies are used intensively for desalination and wastewater treatment. Water filtration using ceramic membranes exhibited high performance compared with polymeric membranes due to various properties such as high resistance to fouling, permeability, rejection rate, and chemical stability. Recently, the performance of nanocomposite ceramic membranes was improved due to the development in nanotechnology. This article focusses on the development of porous ceramic membranes and nanomaterial functionalized ceramic membranes for water filtration applications. At the beginning, various fabrication methods of ceramic membranes were described, and the effect of surface modification techniques on the membrane intrinsic properties was reviewed. Then, the performance of nanoparticles functionalized ceramic membranes was evaluated in terms of physicochemical properties, rejection rate, and water permeability. This work can help new entrants and established researchers to become familiar with the current challenges and developments of nanoparticle-incorporated ceramic membranes for water filtration applications.

Abstract:<p>Application of ceramic membrane technology in water and wastewater is rapidly growing. Inherent advantages of ceramic membrane including chemical/thermal stability, low fouling propensity and long lifespan make ceramic membrane technology attractive, and the ceramic membrane market is expected to achieve a compound annual growth rate of 12%. Ceramic membranes could be integrated with advanced oxidation processes such as <em>in-situ</em> ozonation that cannot be applied in the case of polymeric membrane due to their potential degradation during long-term exposure. In addition, the hybrid-ceramic membrane processes such as ceramic membrane bioreactor are superior to polymeric counterparts due to higher flux, higher pollutant removal, lower fouling rate and higher cleaning efficiency. Although ceramic membrane has high capital cost, life-cycle costs of ceramic and polymeric plants are comparable. Notably, full-scale ceramic membrane water/wastewater treatment plants have been installed in many countries such as Japan, USA, Singapore and United Kingdom. Given the attractiveness of this technology, performance of ceramic membrane is critically reviewed with a focus on their applications in water and wastewater treatment under mild conditions. In addition, fouling mechanisms and control strategies are elucidated and are compared with polymeric membranes. Importantly, for the first time, the status of full-scale applications and market prospects of ceramic membranes are critically analysed to show their future potential. Lastly, future research directions such as development of cost-effective ceramic membranes, understanding the biofouling evolution and economic evaluation of physicochemical processes for fouling control are proposed.</p>

Abstract:Ceramic membranes have received more attention currently from researchers in membrane distillation (MD) applications due to their outstanding properties. However, despite their superior mechanical, thermochemical stability, and resistance to harsh operating conditions, several bottlenecks still limit their applications in MD. Although there are several published articles on ceramic membranes in MD, the uniqueness of this review lies in the fact that it discusses the critical bottlenecks that significantly affect the performance of ceramic membranes in long-term operation and limit their scale-up to commercial MD applications. Furthermore, recent advances, strategies, and techniques to mitigate these limitations have also been discussed. A discussion on high ceramic membrane fabrication costs and mitigation strategies using alternative low-cost ceramic materials to erstwhile conventional ceramic materials has been presented. In addition, the inherent problems of the brittleness and wetting/fouling of ceramic membranes and recent advances in strengthening ceramic membranes and fouling/wetting control via the development of superhydrophobic and omniphobic ceramic surfaces in MD have been addressed. Consequently, technical bottlenecks that still exist despite recent development in ceramic membranes for MD applications have been highlighted and future research direction in developing robust ceramic membranes in MD applications has been elaborated.

Abstract:Among many separation membranes reported to date, the favorable polymer affinity and unique physio-chemical performances of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) including ultra-high surface area, regular and highly controlled porosity have drawn widespread attention in industrial and academic communities. In this comprehensive review, the developmental timeline of MOF containing membranes for water treatment were clarified. The removal efficiencies, elimination mechanisms, as well as possible influencing factors of various MOF containing membranes that applied to water treatment were systematically summarized. The excellent removal performances of MOF containing membranes for various pollutants were determined by the size-exclusion, pi-pi stacking interaction, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding and so on. Since the progress of engineered MOF containing membranes for practical wastewater treatment applications lags, we further ana-lyzed the potential environmental application of MOF containing membranes from four aspects (stability of MOFs, antifouling performance of membranes, compatibility between MOF fillers and polymer matrix, dispersity of MOF nanoparticles in matrix), hoping to provide some meaningful insights. Ultra-Stable Inorganic Mesoporous Membranes for Water Purification

Abstract:Thin, supported inorganic mesoporous membranes are used for the removal of salts, small molecules (PFAS, dyes, and polyanions) and particulate species (oil droplets) from aqueous sources with high flux and selectivity. Nanofiltration membranes can reject simple salts with 80–100% selectivity through a space charge mechanism. Rejection by size selectivity can be near 100% since the membranes can have a very narrow size distribution. Mesoporous membranes have received particular interest due to their (potential) stability under operational conditions and during defouling operations. More recently, membranes with extreme stability became interesting with the advent of in situ fouling mitigation by means of ultrasound emitted from within the membrane structure. For this reason, we explored the stability of available and new membranes with accelerated lifetime tests in aqueous solutions at various temperatures and pH values. Of the available ceria, titania, and magnetite membranes, none were actually stable under all test conditions. In earlier work, it was established that mesoporous alumina membranes have very poor stability. A new nanofiltration membrane was made of cubic zirconia membranes that exhibited near-perfect stability. A new ultrafiltration membrane was made of amorphous silica that was fully stable in ultrapure water at 80 °C. This work provides details of membrane synthesis, stability characterization and data and their interpretation.

Abstract:As a water purification strategy, electrochemically coupled ceramic membrane separation (ECMS) has attracted growing research interests in various water treatment applications due to its in-situ cleaning of fouling, sustainability, and high removal of refractory pollutants. We first describe the current state of research, conductive ceramic membranes (CCMs) materials, and synthesis methods. Next, we highlight the membrane interfacial reaction mechanisms of CCMs and the impact of critical parameters in water purification applications. Additionally, we analyze membrane fouling types, influencing factors, and blockage models. Finally, based on the limitations of the existing studies, we make recommendations for future research and applications. Summarizing the discussion, we identified Semiconductor material-loaded CCMs (S-CCMs) as the most promising CCMs regarding cost (material cost and preparation cost), efficacy, and technology maturity. The Janus membrane design concept utilizes both sides of the CCM as the cathode and anode, greatly reducing reactor complexity and increasing energy efficiency. Further, electro-oxidation, electro-evolutionary bubbling, and electro-repulsion at the membrane interface are the main in-situ self-cleaning mechanisms. Current density and membrane flux are crucial parameters for ECMS in the water purification process as they affect the efficacy of contaminant removal. We suggest that a combined blockage model based on the principle of energy head loss in describing the membrane blockage process is optimum. Overall, the review provides essential guidance for CCMs to reduce fabrication costs and improve water purification efficiency.
