Abstract:Several types of WTs have been used in wind farms, such as WT with induction generator, WT with doubly fed induction generator, and WT with direct drive permanent magnet generator, which are different in terms of power-speed characteristics, generators and ways of interfacing with power grids. In this paper, the models of the three types of WTs are presented. Simulations are performed on a single machine infinite bus system, and the fault ride-through capabilities of different types of WTs are studied. The Critical Clear Time (CCT) analysis is carried out to investigate the impact of different types of WTs on power system stability. Dynamic responses are also simulated on the four-machine system under system disturbances, the damping performances of the power system with the different types of WTs are compared.

Abstract:As the integration of renewable energy generation increases and as conventional generation is phased out, there is a gradual decline in the grid's strength and resilience at the connection point of wind turbines (WTs). Previous studies have shown that traditional grid-following controlled converters exhibit deteriorating dynamic characteristics and may result in an unstable system when connected to a weak grid. Due to the limitations of linear analysis, transient stability investigations are necessary. However, existing methods, such as standalone time-domain simulations or analytical Lyapunov stability criteria, have drawbacks, including computational intensity or excessive conservatism. Our prior research proposed an innovative approach to estimate the system boundary - a time-limited region of attraction (TLRoA), using a hybrid linearised Lyapunov function-based method and the time-reversal technique to compensate for the known limitations. However, in that work, the accuracy of the estimated TLRoA was not investigated, i.e. the TLRoA was not compared against a forward simulated region of attraction, and the sensitivity of the system parameters on the TLRoA was not explored. Moreover, the framework did not consider nonlinear control elements such as PLL saturation. In this paper, we not only build upon our previous work and propose directions that address these gaps but also enhance its effectiveness by introducing optimal sampling to improve further the speed of estimating the TLRoA. Furthermore, the stability boundary is verified using time-domain simulation studies in PSCAD.

Abstract:It has been found in existing research works that the dc-link dynamics are significant internal dynamics in the type-IV wind turbine system, which can shape system characteristics and influence system stability. If dc-link dynamics are weakly damped, this dynamic behavior may reduce system damping and worsen system stability. Considering that dc-link dynamics are determined by the interaction effects of controllers and different control structures can be adopted to regulate dc-link voltage in the type-IV wind turbine system, analytical models are needed to accurately evaluate and analyze dc-link dynamics under different control structures, which are lacked in existing publications. In this article, the mechanism of dc-link dynamics in the system is described at first. A single-in-single-out indicator function is proposed to model the dc-link dynamics, based on which a linearized state-space model of dc-link dynamics is obtained. Then, the eigenvalue sensitivity matrix is applied to determine the influencing factors of dc-link dynamics and possible causes of weakly damped dc-link dynamics. DC-link dynamics under different control structures are compared. The influenced system characteristics can also be modeled by the proposed model of dc-link dynamics and the system stability with weakly damped dc-link dynamics is also investigated with experiments based on control-hardware-in-loop platform.
Stability Analysis of a Wind Turbine Controlled by Direct Torque Control

Abstract:Increasingly, electricity network managers, through their grid codes, require renewable energy production systems to participate in system services, which includes requirements such as the stability of these production systems, the quality of the energy injected into the networks, the ability to withstand voltage dips, etc. To meet these requirements, the use of appropriate commands for the control of the production systems is necessary. Various control methods have been proposed, among which direct torque control (DTC) stands out. However, several studies have highlighted the impact of parametric variations on this control method. The contribution of the work presented in this article is the improvement of DTC when combined with a fuzzy estimate applied to a wind production system based on an asynchronous machine. Robustness tests were simulated to highlight the sensitivity of this control to variations in the stator resistance of asynchronous machines. To make this command robust and stable, a fuzzy estimator was used with this command. The simulation results demonstrated that this combination (DTC with a fuzzy estimator) makes the wind system more stable. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed solution, the root mean square error index was used.

Impedance Aggregation Method of Multiple Wind Turbines and Accuracy Analysis

Abstract:The sequence domain impedance modeling of wind turbines (WTs) has been widely used in the stability analysis between WTs and weak grids with high line impedance. An aggregated impedance model of the wind farm is required in the system-level analysis. However, directly aggregating WT small-signal impedance models will lead to an inaccurate aggregated impedance model due to the mismatch of reference frame definitions among different WT subsystems, which may lead to inaccuracy in the stability analysis. In this paper, we analyze the impacts of the reference frame mismatch between a local small-signal impedance model and a global one on the accuracy of aggregated impedance and the accuracy of impedance-based stability analysis. The results revealed that the impact is related to the power distribution of the studied network. It was found that that the influence of mismatch on stability analysis became subtle when subsystems were balanced loaded. Considering that balanced loading is a common configuration of the practical application, direct impedance aggregation by local small-signal models can be applied due to its acceptable accuracy.

Abstract:In order to address the stability problems and the lack of inertial, the control strategy based on the concept of virtual synchronous generator (VSG) is applied to wind turbine system (WTS) to realize the grid-forming WTS. Question remains that whether potential stability risk will be caused if the grid-forming WTS accesses to the power grid in parallel with the traditional grid-following WTS. In this paper, a 2*2 admittance matrix model is novelly developed for the grid-forming type-IV WTS, based on which the impedance characteristics between the grid-forming and grid-following modes are compared. Impedance-based analysis reveals that the grid-forming type-IV WTS matches the grid-following type-IV WTS, while potential stability risk can be caused when it operates in parallel with the type-III WTS in grid-following mode. It is also found that this mismatch lies below the fundamental frequency where the connected grid is inductive, the type-IV WTS is capacitive in grid-forming mode and the type-III WTS has negative damp in grid-following mode. The developed impedance models and theoretical analysis are verified by experiments.

Abstract:As the number of converter-based renewable generations in the power system is increasing, the inertia provided by the synchronous generators is reducing, which in turn is reducing the stability margins of the power system. In order to assess the large-signal stability, it is essential to model the wind power plant connections accurately. However, the actual EMT models are often unavailable, black-boxed, or computationally too heavy to model in detail. Hence, simplified reduced-order models (ROMs) resembling the actual system behaviour have gained prominence in stability studies. In this regard, an improved WT ROM was proposed to investigate large signal stability during unbalanced grid faults. The methodology presents a systematic way to model the coupled sequence components of the WT ROM for various grid faults. Based on the studies carried out in this paper, it is observed that post unbalanced grid disturbances the proposed WT ROM correctly tracks the angle and frequency, and its trajectory is a good match when compared to a detailed simulation model in PSCAD.

Abstract:Wind power generation is making an increasingly significant contribution to global electricity production. The high penetration of wind power greatly affects the stability of modern power systems. Recently, new-type stability has been defined for power systems with high-penetration power electronic interfaced technologies (including wind power generation). Moreover, it has been widely reported that the classical types of stability have been altered significantly because of the extensive use of power electronic interfaced technologies. This great transformation presents new challenges to the modeling of power system dynamic behaviors. In the past two decades, extensive research on wind turbine generator modeling has been carried out both by academia and industry, and fruitful results have been achieved. However, comprehensive surveys on a wide range of modeling needs and the applicability of existing modeling methods to current various types of stability studies have received less attention in the literature. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview on wind turbine generator modeling for various stability studies. Considering the aspects of time scale, disturbance size, stability study methodology, and modeling methodology, a broad classification of models is presented to distinguish the modeling needs in various stability studies. A conceptual modeling framework is established to address how to custom-tailor an appropriate model for specific types of stability studies. Moreover, the achievements made in various aspects of modeling are comprehensively reviewed. A number of unresolved issues are identified, in particular toward the new-type stability studies, and future research trends are also discussed.

Abstract:Stability is the major factor that should be maintained in every power system. To predict and to optimize the nonlinear parameters this research provides a control system transient analysis using Bode plot and Nyquist plot to regulate the stability in wind power generation. The rotor speed should be balanced with respect to the generation of generator power for viable wind power generation. This study introduces a sliding mode controller for controlling wind speed and preserving system stability, and it may be improved using an Artificial Neural Network based Radial Basis Function Neural Network to eliminate nonlinearities induced by changing wind speed. The tip speed ratio approach is utilized in this study to harvest the most power from wind energy. To optimize this TSR method, a PI-RBFN tuned sliding mode controller was utilized to get maximum power while minimizing active power losses. This proposed approach may be used to address nonlinearities in the pitch angle caused by changing wind speed. As a result, the resilience of the redesigned Type-III wind turbine system is investigated using MATLAB simulink in this study. The simulation results are compared to the current DFIG-based modified Type-III wind turbine method.

Abstract:With consideration of the volatility and intermittency of wind power, the impacts of grid-connected wind power on power system dynamics is explored and exploited in this paper. A transient stability analysis simulation platform is designed and implemented incorporating wind power intermittency. Based on the MATLABTM GUI development environment as well as integration of commercial dynamic security assessment software package, the transient stability index and critical clearing time as evaluation criteria are employed to assess the transient stability of test system under different simulation scenarios involving different wind speed condition, wind turbine generator (WTG) types and WTGs parameters and locations of wind farm etc. through applying the Monte Carlo simulation technique and taken wake effect of wind farm into account.

Abstract:In this paper, a 15 DOF elastic beam element is developed. Hodges-Dowell's partial differential equations are adopted as blade motion equations, but gravity effect is included also. The nonlinear aerodynamic force is calculated by BEMT combined with the Raj 3-D stall-delay model. Then the aerodynamic model is coupled into the structural dynamic model. The equations of motion for the nonlinear periodic time variant system are calculated by implicit Newmark scheme. Finally, the aerodynamic model is verified and shows good agreement with experiment data. An engineering example on wind turbine is carried out by this coupled model. The result is compared with results in other literatures. The gravity effect is focused. And the blade response under different condition is present and discussed.
The influence of wind characteristic on aeroelastic stability for wind turbine blades

Abstract:Modern wind turbine blades become larger and larger. Careful analysis in the blade development is needed to avoid unstable vibration of the blade. In this paper, a numerical model is developed for investigating the aeroelastic response of a single wind turbine blade. The structural dynamic model is developed based on the Hamilton variation principle combining with FEM. Each element is a 15 degree-of-freedom (DOF) elastic beam element with five nodes including three translation DOFS, two rotation DOFS and one torsion DOF in each end. And Hodges-Dowell's partial differential equations are adopted as the basis. A nonlinear aerodynamic analysis for attached flow separated flow and dynamic stall based on a modified B-L model for low mach numbers is incorporated and used to investigate rotor blade section aerodynamic loads. Then, the equations of motion for the nonlinear periodic time variant system are calculated by implicit Newmark scheme. Wind speed in the real wind farm is random. So, the running wind turbine blade will encounter complex situations which can't be predicted in the designing procedure. In order to find the function of the wind characteristic in the aeroelastic stability analysis, many wind speed signal serials with different frequency are feed into the coupled model. Results are presented and discussed for a paper blade. © 2009 IEEE.
Mechanism of Small Signal Stability of Asynchronous Wind Turbines

Abstract:The definition and classification of stability analysis on conventional power system is mainly aimed at the dynamics of synchronous generator system. Based on the method combining physical process analysis and characteristics modal analysis,as well as the rule "from simple to complex," the small signal stabilities of squirrel-cage induction generator, squirrel-cage induction wind turbine and doubly-fed induction wind turbine are discussed. The results show that: the small signal stability of squirrel-cage induction wind turbine is determined by the non-oscillation mode correlated with rotor speed, whereas the small signal stability of doubly-fed induction wind turbine is determined by the oscillation mode correlated with rotor transient voltage and rotor-side converter controller. Although the dominate mode differs with each other,it is the low voltage that causes the eigenvalues to cross the imaginary axis. Therefore,from the point of the physical process,the small signal stability of induction wind turbines is suggested to be one type of voltage stability of power system.

Abstract:The increasing penetration of wind power leads to diverse stability issues, which present more extreme fluctuation and nonlinearity, especially under a weak grid. For the nonlinear transient process, it is particularly complex to estimate since no analytical solution can be found in math. To determine the transient stability of the grid-following (GFL) wind turbine, this article develops a third-order transient model of the GFL-doubly fed induction generator, which consists of a second-order phase-locked loop model and a first-order active power control model. Then, a motion discretization equal area criterion (MD-EAC) method is proposed to estimate the damping effect in the second-order system, which could enhance transient trajectory accuracy and improve stable region reliability. Based on MD-EAC, a power angle to time sequence mapping EAC (SM-EAC) method is proposed to perform the stability analysis in third-order systems with active power control. Finally, numerical simulation results are given to validate the effectiveness of the proposed MD-EAC and SM-EAC under various scenarios. And the mechanism of multi-swing stability is analyzed by numerical simulation and SM-EAC.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Pitch angle control strategy has been applied to mitigate the influence of mechanical load and also output power control at above-rated wind speeds. In this paper, a wind turbine is modeled based on simplified two-mass model and an adaptive fractional-order non-singular fast terminal sliding mode controller (AFO-NFTSMC) is proposed based on individual pitch control strategy to control pitch angle of wind turbine against uncertainties and external disturbances. To do this, the single-blade approach is used and the wind turbine is divided into aerodynamics and mechanical subsystems and governing equations of each subsystem are derived. By designing and applying the AFO-NFTSMC to the two-mass model, system behavior is observed and simulated in terms of step and turbulent wind speed inputs. In addition, to verify the validity of the AFO-NFTSMC, the proposed controller is implemented in the FAST environment in which the wind speed profiles are generated using TurbSim. In order to analyze the environmental effects on the dynamic behavior of the system, the controller performance is explored in presence of parametric uncertainties. Simulation results reveal the priority and high-precision performance of the controller compared to conventional adaptive and adaptive sliding mode controller. Moreover, rotor speed tracking error is evaluated and demonstrated through different criteria.</p>

Abstract:Although the stability regions of wind turbines in the islanding mode have been widely researched, small-signal modeling of grid-forming wind turbines (GFWTs) in the islanding mode has yet to be explored. In addition, the state-space matrix of the wind turbine system has yet to be fully represented. Therefore, this paper proposes a small-signal modeling of GFWT and a method for identifying the stabilization region of a system with variable parameters. First, small-signal modeling of a GFWT based on virtual synchronous generator control is developed. Second, the bialternate sum matrix approach is used to determine the system stabilization region. The system matrix with multiple variable parameters is first decomposed into the sum of several matrices in this paper. Furthermore, the rotor-side generator control is simplified. It can reduce the dimensionality of the system matrix model. Finally, the simulation shows that the proposed method for determining the stabilization region of the variable system is accurate.

Abstract:The issue of nonlinear aerodynamic stability of blades is a significant technological bottleneck in the development of large-scale wind turbines. In order to explore the influencing parameters and mechanisms of the nonlinear aerodynamic stability of large-scale wind turbine blades, the flexible blade was simplified into a two-dimensional rigid blade segment with elastic supports, which formed the pitch single-degree-of-freedom aeroelastic wind tunnel test system. Through wind tunnel vibration and pressure measurement synchronization tests, the torsional vibration characteristics and the flow field development mechanism of the airfoil under different wind speeds and attack angles were studied in detail. The wind tunnel tests revealed two distinct torsional aeroelastic behaviors: the static equilibrium state with negligible amplitude and high vibrational randomness, and the stall flutter state with larger amplitude, which was changed according to sinusoidal law substantially. The stall flutter state was confined within a specific wind speed range, and its stability boundary, which included the critical initiation wind speed and the critical cessation wind speed, all varied linearly with the installation attack angle. The growth rate of the critical cessation wind speed with the installation attack angle was significantly higher than that of the critical initiation wind speed, making the wind speed range for the occurrence of stall flutter also linearly larger. Additionally, the frequency of the stall flutter was significantly higher than the natural frequency of the model, and it exhibited a positive correlation with the critical initiation wind speed. The flow state around the airfoil during stall flutter was primarily distinguished from its static counterpart by the presence of leading-edge vortices. The formation and shedding of these leading-edge vortices would significantly influence the characteristics of stall flutter.

Abstract:Load calculations on wind turbines are an essential part of its development. In the preliminary design phase simplified multibody models are used for the estimation of the interface loads. The interface loads are used within an iterative development loop to design the components of the wind turbine such as gearbox, blades, tower and so on. Due to the early application of load calculations within the development process, the quality of the simulation results has a great influence on the wind turbine design. In this contribution the simulation results of the multibody codes alaska/Wind, MSC.Adams and SIMPACK are compared with measurements obtained from a prototype of a 2.05 MW wind turbine developed by W2e Wind to Energy. Furthermore, simulation results of the special wind turbine design code Flex5, developed at the Technical University of Denmark Copenhagen, are taken into account. A statistical and dynamical evaluation of the simulation and measurement results has been done. Due to the use of the same controller procedures as used on the physical wind turbine, the wind turbine models show almost the same behaviour (electrical power, pitch angle, rotor speed) as the wind turbine in the field. Differences occur during the evaluation of the interface loads due to the different kinds of wind turbine modelling.
