Abstract:Well-defined organic nanostructures with controllable size and morphology are increasingly exploited in optoelectronic devices. As promising building blocks, porphyrins have demonstrated great potentials in visible-light photocatalytic applications, because of their electrical, optical and catalytic properties. From this perspective, we have summarized the recent significant advances on the design and photocatalytic applications of porphyrin-based nanostructures. The rational strategies, such as texture or crystal modification and interfacial heterostructuring, are described. The applications of the porphyrin-based nanostructures in photocatalytic pollutant degradation and hydrogen evolution are presented. Finally, the ongoing challenges and opportunities for the future development of porphyrin nanostructures in high-quality nanodevices are also proposed.

Abstract:Porphyrins are a class of macromolecular heterocyclic compounds formed by the inter-carbon atoms of four pyrrole-like subunits through the submethyl bridge (〓CH▬). Porphyrin rings have 26 electrons in highly conjugated system and are easily modified peripheral structures, often serve as ideal building blocks to construct self-assembled nanostructures with excellent physical and chemical properties. Porphyrin nanostructures have excellent visible light absorption properties, which will significantly improve the efficiency of electron–hole separation, and are also commonly used in photocatalysis fields. Porphyrin photosensitizers have superior strong phototoxicity and little side effects, and are widely used in tumor photothermal/photodynamic treatment. This chapter summarizes the self-assembly methods of porphyrins, the applications progress of porphyrin self-assembled nanomaterials in photocatalysis and tumor therapy, and discusses the development trend in future of porphyrin nanomaterials.

Abstract:Porphyrins are cyclic molecules with large π-conjugated structure. They can form ordered nanostructures through controllable self-assembly via multiple non-covalent interactions, to regulate their photoelectric properties effectively. However, it is still a great challenge to accurately regulate the self-assembly process to obtain self-assembled nanostructures with controllable morphology, uniform size and ordered internal structure, and further to clarify the key factors controlling the performance. This paper reviews the development of solution phase self-assembly strategy of porphyrin self-assemblies in recent years and its applications in the fields of photocatalysis, chemical sensor and biological phototherapy, and preliminarily summarizes the structure-performance relationship between the morphology, size and internal structure of porphyrin self-assembled nanostructures and related applications.

Abstract:Supramolecular self-assembly as a breakthrough methodology in the nanoscience and nanotechnology fields has attracted increasing attention. Highly ordered self-assembled supramolecular nanostructures aim to emulate natural light-harvesting and energy transfer and electron transfer processes, which have been an active and rapidly developing field for visible-light-driven photocatalytic applications. This Research Update aims to present the recent progress of the self-assembly of π-conjugated molecules, including perylene diimides (PDIs), porphyrin, and co-assembly of peptide–porphyrin as well as the shape-defined functional hierarchical structures. First, the basic principles of π-conjugated molecular structure design are described. The two nitrogen positions and the bay positions of PDIs can effectively regulate their electronic properties and geometric skeleton, and the functional groups and the good solvents of porphyrin effectively determine the choice of self-assembly methods. Then, the key morphology dependent optoelectronic properties and charge-transport and energy-transport functionalities are also discussed. These self-assembled supramolecular nanostructures' inherent optoelectronic properties correlated with applications in photocatalytic water splitting into hydrogen evolution are overviewed. By now, the self-assembled In(III) meso-tetraphenylporphine (InTPP) porphyrin nanostructures exhibited the highest photocatalytic hydrogen generation activity among the reported supramolecular nanostructures owing to the central metal of porphyrin and small size of the InTPP nanostructure. Finally, perspectives on the crucial issues and potential future research directions are addressed. This Research Update will provide a new reference for building high performance, stable, and durable photosensitizers based on the supramolecular assembly.

Abstract:While tremendous advances have been made in dimensionality‐dependent performances of inorganic‐based low‐dimensional nanostructures, paradigms concerning π‐conjugated molecule‐based supramolecular nanoassemblies are relatively fewer despite their various intrinsic advantages. It is herein reported that 0D, 1D, and 2D supramolecular nanostructures of a porphyrin, 5,10,15,20‐tetrakis(4‐aminophenyl)‐21H,23H‐porphine, with a spherical, fibrous and sheetlike architecture, respectively, could be fabricated via a reprecipitation protocol. As a typical example to demonstrate their dimensionality‐dependent optoelectronic performances, it is shown that the nanomaterials could serve as photocatalysts for water remediation, where the catalytic reactivity exhibits a trend of nanofibers>nanospheres>nanosheets. The superior catalytic reactivity of the nanofibers stems from the formation of relatively well‐defined J‐aggregates with orderly and tightly organized chromophores, conferring them with strong photoinduced electron–hole transport and separation capability. The higher catalytic reactivity of the nanospheres than nanosheets results from their larger specific surface area, which facilitates efficient accessibility of photogenerated charge carriers, although the porphyrins therein form unspecific J‐aggregates with disorderly and loosely stacked chromophores. The investigation likely initiates a simple method for π‐conjugated molecule‐based 0D, 1D and 2D nanoassemblies by using the same tectons, based on which the highlighted underlying scientific insights might provide useful clues for rational design of organic‐based low‐dimensional advanced soft materials.

Abstract:Photoactive artificial nanocatalysts that mimic natural photoenergy systems can yield clean and renewable energy. However, their poor photoabsorption capability and disfavored photogenic electron-hole recombination hinder their production. Herein, we designed two nanocatalysts with various microstructures by combining the tailored self-assembly of the meso-tetra(p-hydroxyphenyl) porphine photosensitizer with the growth of titanium dioxide (TiO2). The porphyrin photoabsorption antenna efficiently extended the absorption range of TiO2 in the visible region, while anatase TiO2 promoted the efficient electron-hole separation of porphyrin. The photo-induced electrons were transferred to the surface of the Pt co-catalyst for the generation of hydrogen via water splitting, and the hole was utilized for the decomposition of methyl orange dye. The hybrid structure showed greatly increased photocatalytic performance compared to the core@shell structure due to massive active sites and increased photo-generated electron output. This controlled assembly regulation provides a new approach for the fabrication of advanced, structure-dependent photocatalysts.

Abstract:A series of (4-cyanophenyl)porphyrins have been prepared and structurally characterized by H-1 NMR, IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. The relative singlet-oxygen quantum yields, two-photon absorption cross-sections and DNA photocleavage activities of these porphyrins were measured. The results show that (4-cyanophenyl)porphyrins with a properly designed hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance for better cellular uptake have potential application in two-photon-absorption photodynamic therapy. Abstract:The design and engineering of the size, shape, and chemistry of photoactive building blocks enables the fabrication of functional nanoparticles for applications in light harvesting, photocatalytic synthesis, water splitting, phototherapy, and photodegradation. Here, we report the synthesis of such nanoparticles through a surfactant-assisted interfacial self-assembly process using optically active porphyrin as a functional building block. The self-assembly process relies on specific interactions such as p-p stacking and metalation (metal atoms and ligand coordination) between individual porphyrin building blocks. Depending on the kinetic conditions and type of surfactants, resulting structures exhibit well-defined one- to three-dimensional morphologies such as nanowires, nanooctahedra, and hierarchically ordered internal architectures. Specifically, electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction results indicate that these nanoparticles exhibit stable single-crystalline and nanoporous frameworks. Due to the hierarchical ordering of the porphyrins, the nanoparticles exhibit collective optical properties resulted from coupling of molecular porphyrins and photocatalytic activities such as photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) pollutants and hydrogen production.

Abstract:A series of novel porphyrin-grafted poly (phenylene vinylene) derivatives, Porp-RO-PPV, were synthesized by a simple two-step method. These copolymers contain conjugated poly(phenylene vinylene) derivatives as polymer backbone and covalently linked porphyrin units as side chain, which were confirmed by FTIR and H-1 NMR, and used for photovoltaic devices. The thermal, optical properties and sensitizing effect, and photovoltaic properties have been investigated. The emission spectra of Porp-RO-PPV copolymers revealed the existence of strong energy transfer from PPV backbone to porphyrin units. The energy conversion efficiency (eta(e),) of photovoltaic devices based on Porp-RO-PPV+PCBM reached 0.33% (78.2 mW/cm(2), AMI.5) and porphyrin units in the copolymers showed good sensitizing effect at low concentration. Two Novel Self-Assemblies of Supramolecular Solar Cells Using N-heterocyclic-anchoring Porphyrins.

Abstract:Two novel N-substituted anchoring porphyrins (ZnPAtz and ZnPAim) have been devised and synthesized. Moreover, these two anchoring porphyrins were linked to the TiO2 semiconductor through carboxyl groups and then a zinc porphyrin ZnP was bound to the anchoring porphyrin using a zinc-to-ligand axial coordination approach. The different performances of these assemblies were compared with single anchoring porphyrin devices ZnPAtz and ZnPAim. The photoelectric conversion efficiency of the new supramolecular solar cells sensitized by ZnP-ZnPAx (x=tz, im) has been improved. The ZnP-ZnPAtz-based DSSCs provided the highest photovoltaic efficiency (1.86%). Fundamental studies showed that incorporation of these assemblies promote light-harvesting efficiency.

Abstract:Inspired by the hierarchical chiral assembly of porphyrin–proteins in photosynthetic systems, the hierarchical self-assembly of porphyrin–amino acids/peptides provides a novel strategy for constructing functional materials. How to artificially simulate the assembly of porphyrins, proteins, and other cofactors in the photosynthesis system to obtain persistent strong light capture, charge separation and catalytic reactions has become an important concern in the construction of biomimetic photosynthesis systems. This paper summarizes the different assembly strategies adopted in recent years, the effects of driving forces on self-assembly, and the application of porphyrin–peptides in catalysis and biomedicine, and briefly discusses the challenges and prospects for future research.

Abstract:Molecular self-assembly is a natured-inspired strategy to integrate individual functional molecules into supramolecular nanostructured materials through noncovalent bond interactions for solar to fuel conversion. However, the design and engineering of the morphology, size, and orderly stacking of supramolecular nanostructures remain a great challenge. In this study, regular porphyrin nanocrystals with different orderly stacked structures are synthesized through noncovalent self-assembly of Pt(II) meso-tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphine (PtTCPP), using surfactants with different electronegativity. The synergy of noncovalent bond interactions between porphyrin molecules, and between porphyrin molecules and surfactants resulted in different molecular packing patterns. Due to the spatial ordering of PtTCPP molecules, the different nanocrystals exhibit both collective optical properties and morphology-dependent activities in photocatalytic hydrogen production. The measurements of the photodeposition of dual cocatalysts showed that the photogenerated electrons and holes selectively aggregated at different active sites, revealing separation pathways and directional transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes in the assemblies. This study provides a new strategy to exert rational control over porphyrin self-assembly nanocrystals for highly efficient water splitting.

Abstract:A series of functionalized porphyrin molecules containing electron- rich alkynes, synthesized by means of the Sonogashira coupling reaction were further modified by reacting the ethynyl groups with click reagent through a formal [2+2] click reaction. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of the porphyrin derivatives were studied by UV/Vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. We show that the optoelectronic properties are affected by the click reagent groups and central metal ions. The functionalized porphyrin molecules show strong charge-transfer (CT) bands in the visible region (near-IR region) and potent redox activities. Through a phase-exchange self-assembly method, the highly organized morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The functionalized porphyrin molecules represent an interesting set of candidates for optoelectronic device components. The effect of the metal ions or click reagent groups on the self-assembly properties were also studied by the UV/Vis spectroscopic titration experiments.

Abstract:Two new acetohydrazide zinc porphyrin with different donor units based Mn (Ⅱ) ion coordination polymers (CPsx, x=1,2) have been designed, synthesized, and well-characterized. Two coordination polymers and anchor porphyrin (ZnPA) self-assembly by metal-ligand axial coordination to modify the nano-structured TiO2 electrode surface has been investigated in photoelectrochemical device. Our results reveal that the self-assemblies devices show significantly improved photocurrent conversion efficiency. Particularly, CPs1 based solar cell showed higher short circuit current density and conversion efficiency. Their optical performance, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and transient photovoltage decay were also investigated to further understand the photoelectrochemical results. In addition, the assembled modes of the assemblies immobilized on TiO2 electrode surfaces were also verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), theory calculations and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX).

Abstract:Porphyrins are naturally occurring macrocyclic compounds containing four pyrroles connected through four methine carbons at their alpha-positions. Porphyrins and their derivatives are widely found in biological systems and they engage in many essential processes that sustain living systems, such as enzyme catalysis, oxygen transportation and photosynthesis. The unique biological functions and physiochemical properties of porphyrin and its derivatives have made them interesting candidates in the preparation of functional materials for various applications. The recent progress on the synthesis and application of porphyrin derivatives and particularly the related macromolecular and supramolecular structures, is summarized in this review. Following a brief introduction on porphyrin and its derivatives in nature and on the binding and adsorption studies on porphyrin-related bile pigments such as bilirubin, the strategies for the preparation of porphyrin-based polymers are reviewed, including the covalent polymerization and supramolecular self-assembly of linear polymers based on porphyrin, as well as two- and three-dimensional porphyrin assemblies and frameworks. The applications of porphyrin-based polymers and supramolecular-structures are also covered, which include: artificial enzymes, photo-dynamic therapy, chemical sensors, light-energy harvesting and medical imaging. These versatile functions are a synergetic result of porphyrin and its conjunct polymers: the porphyrin has unique photo-physical properties, and the polymers manifested porphyrin moieties stable and switchable chemical environment. Despite the progress having been made, the great potential as functional materials of porphyrin and its derivatives has not been fully exploited. In the future, tailoring the molecular topology of porphyrins-based polymer is believed to be an effective strategy of obtaining functional materials with controlled self-assembly structure. Constructing higher-ordered structure with supramolecular self-assembled porphyrin derivatives is a promising field, because the hierarchical structure would bring more interesting functions that cannot be realized with single molecules. Combination of porphyrin with other biomolecules is worthwhile to pay attention to. With covalent or supramolecular conjunction of porphyrin and biomolecules, functional materials with novel properties that even do not exist in nature might be created.

Abstract:TCPP‐(FF)4, a derivative of porphyrin‐dipeptide with both chiral structure and optical properties, was synthesized by chemical coupling method. TCPP‐d‐(FF)4 and TCPP‐l‐(FF)4 with different chiral structures can self‐assemble into nanohelix with opposite spirals at specific solutions and pH, and show photocatalytic activity and chiral selectivity in the reaction of tyrosine to dityrosine. Inspired by the photosynthesis and protein structure of green plants in nature, TCPP‐(FF)4, a porphyrin‐dipeptide derivative with chiral and optical properties, was synthesized by chemical coupling. The experimental results show that the optical properties and structural morphology of TCPP‐(FF)4 supermolecular assemblies can be precisely controlled by adjusting the types of solvents and pH. Moreover, the TCPP‐(FF)4 can self‐assemble into nanohelix with photocatalytic activity, which can be used as a catalyst for enantioselective photocatalysis of tyrosine (Tyr) into di‐tyrosine (di‐Tyr), which provides a promising strategy for the development of enantioselective photocatalysts.

Abstract:Two zinc porphyrins substituted at the meso-positions with different donor units (denoted as ZnP1 and ZnP2) have been designed and synthesized to construct new self-assemblies (denoted as ZnPx-ZnPA) with anchor porphyrin (ZnPA) dyads formed by the coordination bonds of Zn-to-ligand approach. Then these assemblies were absorbed on the semiconducting TiO2 electrode surfaces by the carboxylic groups of anchor porphyrin (ZnPA) to build dye sensitized solar cells. Their spectral properties, electrochemical, theoretical calculations and photovoltaic properties were systematically investigated. Interestingly, these self-assemblies devices compared to monomer anchoring porphyrin device showed higher [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. Especially, the dyad of ester-based zinc porphyrin (ZnP2) assembly device has the highest photoelectric conversion efficiency. The assembled modes of the assemblies immobilized on TiO2 electrode surfaces were also verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Abstract:Abstract As an emerging organic semiconductor, perylene diimide (PDI) self-assembly has attracted tremendous attention in the aspects of solar cells, sensors, fluorescence probes and n-transistors, etc. In term of photocatalysis, various photocatalysts based on PDI self-assembly exhibit some unique properties, such as intrinsic Π-Π stacking structure, fast internal charge transfer, band-like electronic structure, flexible structural modifiability, well-defined morphological adjustability and excellent light absorption. This paper mainly presents recent progress on PDI self-assembly regarding how to regulate the electronic structure of PDI self-assembly. In addition, the photocatalytic applications of PDI self-assembly and its complexes were reviewed, such as environmental remedy, energy productions, organic synthesis and photodynamic/photothermal therapy, further highlighting related photocatalytic mechanisms. Finally, the review contents and some perspectives on photocatalytic research of PDI self-assembly were summarized, and some key scientific problems were put forward to direct related photocatalytic research in future.

Abstract:Designing visible-light-driven, high-efficiency, robust photocatalysts with practical potential is an important direction in the photocatalysis field. Herein, pyrimidine-modified g-C3N4 (Pym-CN) photocatalysts with curled nanosheet morphology were prepared through a facile supramolecular assembly method. Pyrimidine has only two N atoms, thus leading to the deficiency formation in the supramolecular assembly of cyanuric acid with melamine. Upon calcination, the deficiency decreases the polycondensation degree of g-C3N4, thereby further affecting its morphology and optoelectronic property. The pyrimidine modification can enhance the absorption capacity toward visible light and facilitates the separation of photo-generated carriers. By changing the adding amount of pyrimidine, the optimal Pym-CN photocatalyst exhibits a H2 evolution rate of 1046 μmol g−1 h−1 under visible light, which is almost 30 times higher than that of pristine g-C3N4. This work may afford a novel approach to modifying organic polymer semiconductor photocatalysts with small organic molecules of nonplanar structure.
