Abstract:Within this work, we firstly report the self-assemblies of zinc porphyrin coordination polymers (CPs) appended isonicotinic acid ligands by metal-ligand axial coordination approach immobilized on the nanostructured TiO2 electrode surfaces in photoelectrochemical devices. Compared to the assemblies based on zinc porphyrins integrated isonicotinic acid ligands via metal-ligand axial coordination or metal-ligand edged binding approach, the CPs-based assemblies exhibit significantly improved photovoltaic performances. Especially, the assembly based on iminazole-substituted zinc porphyrin coordination polymer exhibits an excellent photovoltaic performance with a short circuit photocurrent density (J(sc)) of 3.8 mA cm(-2), an open circuit voltage (V-oc) of 0.31 V, a fill factor (FF) of 0.67 and an overall conversion efficiency (eta) of 0.48% under AM 1.5 conditions. Abstract:Two new acetohydrazide zinc porphyrin with different donor units based Mn (Ⅱ) ion coordination polymers (CPsx, x=1,2) have been designed, synthesized, and well-characterized. Two coordination polymers and anchor porphyrin (ZnPA) self-assembly by metal-ligand axial coordination to modify the nano-structured TiO2 electrode surface has been investigated in photoelectrochemical device. Our results reveal that the self-assemblies devices show significantly improved photocurrent conversion efficiency. Particularly, CPs1 based solar cell showed higher short circuit current density and conversion efficiency. Their optical performance, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and transient photovoltage decay were also investigated to further understand the photoelectrochemical results. In addition, the assembled modes of the assemblies immobilized on TiO2 electrode surfaces were also verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), theory calculations and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX).

Abstract:In this work, a new zinc meso-tetra[3-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenyl]porphyrin (ZnP) was synthesized. Further, the porphyrin ZnP was immobilized by metal-ligand axial coordination (ZnP-A) and a metal-ligand edged binding approach (ZnP-Zn-A) on the nanostructured TiO2 electrode surface modified with coordinating ligand functionality, isonicotinic acid (A). The performances of the assemblies-sensitized solar cells were performed under irradiance of 100 mWcm(-2) AM 1.5G sunlight. Photo-electrochemical studies reveal significantly improved performance of the assembly ZnP-A. These assemblies can afford a fertile base for further design and fabrication of new supramolecular solar cells in future.

Abstract:Two zinc porphyrins substituted at the meso-positions with different donor units (denoted as ZnP1 and ZnP2) have been designed and synthesized to construct new self-assemblies (denoted as ZnPx-ZnPA) with anchor porphyrin (ZnPA) dyads formed by the coordination bonds of Zn-to-ligand approach. Then these assemblies were absorbed on the semiconducting TiO2 electrode surfaces by the carboxylic groups of anchor porphyrin (ZnPA) to build dye sensitized solar cells. Their spectral properties, electrochemical, theoretical calculations and photovoltaic properties were systematically investigated. Interestingly, these self-assemblies devices compared to monomer anchoring porphyrin device showed higher [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. Especially, the dyad of ester-based zinc porphyrin (ZnP2) assembly device has the highest photoelectric conversion efficiency. The assembled modes of the assemblies immobilized on TiO2 electrode surfaces were also verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Abstract:Abstract Two new self-assemblies based on zinc porphyrin dyes ZnPx-ZnPA (x = 1, 2) were synthesized and used for dye-sensitized solar cells. Capping layer dyes consist of zinc porphyrin (ZnP) as core unit and carbazole (P1), phenothiazine (P2) as electron-donating group. The dye ZnPA contains carboxylic group as an anchor porphyrin with upper dyes (denoted as ZnP1 and ZnP2) formed dyads by coordination bonds of Zn-to-ligand self-assembled devices. The assembly modes were also verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The influence of the upper porphyrins on molecular structure as well as photovoltaic performance was investigated via photophysical and electrochemical studies and calculations. With addition of the phenothiazine unit, the ZnP2-ZnPA possesses better light-harvesting capability with a significantly red-shifted Q-band. The photoelectrochemical efficiencies for ZnP2-ZnPA are better than those of ZnP1-ZnPA ascribed to larger Jsc and Voc.

Abstract:We prepared in this work an anchoring porphyrin and a series of hat-porphyrins. The zinc atom of the hat-porphyrins can be coordinated axially with the pyridine moiety of the anchoring porphyrin which is anchored on the titania surface by a carboxyl group. The structures of the assemblies were confirmed using computational calculations, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). Solar cell devices of the monomer anchoring porphyrin and its assemblies were fabricated and the photovoltaic performances were measured under standard AM 1.5 sunlight irradiance. We found that the assembly devices showed higher J(SC) and lower V-OC than that of the monomer anchoring porphyrin device. However, the comprehensive influence of J(SC) and V-OC led to an enhancement in the solarto- electric power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of the assemblies. We also studied the variation of J(SC) and V-OC using electronic absorption and emission spectroscopy, charge extraction measurements, transient photovoltage decay measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

Abstract:Two novel N-substituted anchoring porphyrins (ZnPAtz and ZnPAim) have been devised and synthesized. Moreover, these two anchoring porphyrins were linked to the TiO2 semiconductor through carboxyl groups and then a zinc porphyrin ZnP was bound to the anchoring porphyrin using a zinc-to-ligand axial coordination approach. The different performances of these assemblies were compared with single anchoring porphyrin devices ZnPAtz and ZnPAim. The photoelectric conversion efficiency of the new supramolecular solar cells sensitized by ZnP-ZnPAx (x=tz, im) has been improved. The ZnP-ZnPAtz-based DSSCs provided the highest photovoltaic efficiency (1.86%). Fundamental studies showed that incorporation of these assemblies promote light-harvesting efficiency.

Abstract:In this work, two self-assembled N-heterocyclic-substituted zinc porphyrins and isonicotinic acid dyads formed by the coordination bonds of Zn-to-ligand, have been designed and organized. Further, the dyads were immobilized on the semiconducting TiO2 electrode surfaces by the carboxylic groups of isonicotinic acid ligands, and their photovoltaic performances were measured under irradiance of 100mWcm−2 AM 1.5G sunlight. Photoelectrochemical studies reveal a significantly improved photovoltaic behavior for the dyad of tetrazole-based zinc porphyrin compared to the dyad with iminazole-based zinc porphyrin under the similar experimental conditions. The UV–Vis absorption, fluorescence spectra, molecular orbital (MO) patterns and HOMO–LUMO energy gaps of the dyads were studied to further reflect these photovoltaic features. In addition, the assembled modes of the dyads modified on TiO2 electrode surfaces were also determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Abstract:<p>Porphyrin sensitizers have attracted great attention due to their admirable performance in dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). In this work, three antenna zinc porphyrins ZnPi (i = 1-3) and anchored porphyrin ZnPA have been designed, synthesized, and characterized. The antenna molecules ZnPi adhere on to the anchored porphyrin ZnPA via metal–ligand axial coordination self-assembly, and then the ZnPA bonding to nanostructured TiO<sub>2</sub> to prepared ZnPi(i=1-3)-ZnPA based DSSCs. Optical performance analysis showed that the devices based on self-assemblies exhibited obviously enhanced light-harvesting ability than the monomer anchor molecule ZnPA. The photovoltaic results showed that, compared with the ZnPA-sensitized solar cell, the ZnPi(i=1-3)-ZnPA-sensitized solar cells have higher short - circuit photocurrent density (Jsc). However, the open circuit voltage (Voc) of the self-assembled porphyrin-sensitized solar cells are lower than the ZnPA-sensitized solar cell, this is because of the increase of charge recombination rate of the self-assembled porphyrin-sensitized solar cells on the electrode. As a result, the devices based ZnPi (i=1-3)-ZnPA exhibited enhanced photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) than monomer ZnPA-sensitized solar cell. Especially for the ZnP3-ZnPA-sensitized solar cell with a optimal PCE is 3.44 %, indicating that the trifluoromethyl substituent of the antenna molecule ZnP3 porphyrin was a more suitable group. Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are used to further verify the test results of the assembled sensitized solar cells. Therefore, our new method, metal-ligand self-assembly strategy provides new ideas for the high-performance DSSC.</p>

Abstract:In this work, a metal-mediated assembling strategy has been used to organize a series of new assemblies based on tetrapyridylporphyrin () on nanostructured TiO2 electrode surfaces, wherein the metal ions (, = Zn(2+), Cd(2+), Hg(2+) and Mn(2+)) bridge the pyridyl units of and (E)-4-[(pyridin-4-ylmethylene)-amino]benzoic acid (), resulting in a assembled mode. The assembled structures were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), computational calculations, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), IR, UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra. The performances of the assembly-sensitized solar cells were also measured under an irradiance of 100 mW cm(-2) AM 1.5G sunlight. Photoelectrochemical results reveal a relatively large photocurrent of the device. Simultaneously, a large open-circuit photovoltage and a significantly improved conversion efficiency of the device are also observed. These findings may serve as another good testing ground for the fabrication of supramolecular solar cells in future.

Abstract:In this work, employing the metal-mediated assembling strategy for organizing acetohydrazide zinc porphyrin (ZnP) and different organic acid (Ai) ligands on the nanostructured TiO2 electrode surfaces have been prepared, wherein the ZnP and Ai units are bound by a series of differently bivalent metal ions (M, M=Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+), resulting in a ZnP–M–Ai assembled approach. The photovoltaic performances of these assemblies-sensitized solar cells were performed under irradiance of 100mWcm−2 AM 1.5G sunlight. A significantly improved conversion efficiency of ZnP–Mn–A5 and ZnP–Cd–A5 devices occurs, indicating well-ordered arrangements of ZnP molecules on the TiO2 electrode surfaces for ZnP–Mn–A5 and ZnP–Cd–A5, where A5 is a pyridine–monocarboxylic acid ligand bearing longer arm. The results were also verified by the HOMO–LUMO gaps, UV–vis and fluorescence spectra.

Abstract:A novel zinc porphyrin ZnP bearing a 1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine unit has been designed and synthesized in good yields to construct axial-coordinated assemblies (denoted as ZnP-Ai, i = 1, 2, 3 and 4) with different isonicotinic acid analogues (assigned as Al, A2, A3 and A4) through zinc-to-ligand axial coordination approach. Then these assemblies were grafted onto TiO2 electrode surface to build dye sensitized solar cells. The performance of these cells also was examined. Photoelectrochemical measurements illustrate that all the assembly based cells have certain capabilities to export photocurrent. Especially, the ZnP-A2 assembly with a cyanoacrylic acid group based solar cell has the highest conversion efficiency of 0.81% with J(SC) of 3.0 mA/cm(2), a V-OC of 0.38 V, and a FF of 0.71 among these assembly based solar cells. Additionally, the UV-vis absorption, fluorescence spectra, density functional theory (OFT) calculations, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) were performed to determine the photoelectric behavior as well as morphological structure on the TiO2 surface modified by these assemblies. Abstract:Two new zinc porphyrin with different donor units based Mn(II) ion coordination polymers (CPsx, x=1, 2) have been designed, synthesized, and well-characterized. Two coordination polymers and anchor porphyrin (ZnPA) self-assembly by metal-ligand axial coordination to modify the nano-structured TiO2 electrode surface has been investigated in photoelectrochemical device. The assembled processes of CPsx-ZnPA on TiO2 surface were as follows:a porphyrin molecule (ZnPA) as anchoring group was immobilized on the TiO2 electrode surface through carboxylic groups, then the desired dye of CPsx was bound to the anchoring group through axially coordination bonded from porphyrin central Zn(II) ions of CPsx and the N atom of ZnPA. Our results reveal that the self-assemblies devices show significantly improved photocurrent conversion efficiency. Particularly, CPs2 based solar cell displayed a PCE (power conversion efficiency) of 1.89%, and the J(sc) was 4.82 mA.cm(-2). This indicates that the supramolecular coordination polymers self-assembly strategy has been successfully applied in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). Their optical performance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were also investigated to further understand the photoelectrochemical results. In addition, the assembled modes of the assemblies immobilized on TiO2 electrode surfaces were also verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
Bilayer Structured Supramolecular Light Harvesting Arrays Based on Zinc Porphyrin Coordination Polymers for Enhanced Photocurrent Generation in Dye Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:An acylhydrazone zinc porphyrin P1 and its coordination polymers (CPs, denoted as P1M, M = Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) with different metal ions (Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+) were synthesized. Then these coordination polymers were assembled into bilayer structured supramolecular chromophores through axially coordinating with anchoring porphyrin AP, and their performance in dye sensitized solar cells was investigated. Our results reveal that the bilayer structured supramolecular chromophore based solar cells show significantly improved photocurrent conversion efficiency. Particularly, P1Mn and P1Zn based solar cells showed a relatively higher short circuit current density (JSC) due to their broad absorption bands and remarkable light harvesting abilities. Meanwhile, the VOC values of the cells fabricated with the bilayered chromophores slightly decreased. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in combination with charge extraction (CE) and transient photovoltage decay (TPD) measurements indicates that the decreased VOC resulted from the vigorous electron recombination and the downward shifted conduction band edge (ECB) of titania.
Metal (cadmium and Manganese)-Mediated Assemblies of Two Acetohydrazide Zinc Porphyrins for Use in Supramolecular Solar Cells

The assembled structures were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), computational calculations and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Photoelectrochemical studies reveal a significantly improved photovoltaic performance for ZnP2–Mn–A compared to other assemblies, which are also reflected by their corresponding UV–Vis absorption, fluorescence spectra and HOMO–LUMO energy gaps.

Abstract:Anchoring groups are extremely important in controlling the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The design and characterization of sensitizers with new anchoring groups, in particular non-carboxylic acid groups, has become a recent focus of DSC research. Herein, new donoracceptor zincporphyrin dyes with a pyridine ring as an anchoring group have been designed and synthesized for applications in DSCs. Photophysical and electrochemical investigations demonstrated that the pyridine ring worked effectively as an anchoring group for the porphyrin sensitizers. DSCs that were based on these new porphyrins showed an overall power-conversion efficiency of about 4.0% under full sunlight (AM1.5G, 100mWcm2).
