Abstract:Polymeric ultra-low-density (ULD) proppants were successfully synthesized through the coating of 20-40 mesh polystyrene/graphite microspheres by epoxy/phenolic. The coated microspheres had very low densities of 1.038-1.080 g/cm(3) and were suspended in 5 wt% NaCI aqueous solution. Scanning electron micrographs showed that the coated microspheres had good sphericity (>= 0.9) with a smooth coating layer of 12.7 mu m. When a crosslinked epoxy/phenolic resin layer was introduced, the acid solubility, thermostability, and compression strength of the coated microspheres were dramatically improved. When the concentration of resin impregnating solution was reached 40%, the optimal performance of ULD proppants was achieved, and the following characteristics were obtained: (1) acid solubility as low as 0.06%; (2) 5% weight loss temperature as high as 378 degrees C; (3) percentage of damage as low as 1.2% at 68 MPa.

Abstract:Design, synthesis and application of low-density proppant (LDP) are of great significance for efficient and clean exploitation of low permeability oil and gas. On the basis of a brief introduction of hydraulic fracturing and the application of traditional proppants, this review systematically summarized the polymer application progress in LDP, including coated sand, coated ceramics, coated nutshells, especially for polymer composites based ultra-low density proppant (ULDP). Finally, the existing problems and future development direction are also prospected.

Abstract:Ultra-low-density proppants (ULDPs) play a crucial role to push the development of slick-water hydraulic fracturing technology to enhance oil and gas production. However, the polymer microspheres reported as ULDPs have certain drawbacks such as high cost and weak resistance to high-temperature and pressure. This paper aims to develop a low-cost type of ULDPs, which composed of hard but low-density framework and reinforcing modifier. To achieve this, activated carbon (ACs) was selected as the framework due to its abundant nano-porous structures and strong adsorption capacity. By combining the liquid-solid phase transition reaction of the KH570 and the coating effect of phenolic formaldehyde resin, activated carbon-based composite microspheres, referred to as KP-ACs, were produced as ULDPs. The nano-porous structures of ACs facilitate the penetration of KH570 solution into the pores through capillary action. The subsequent sol-gel reaction of KH570 within the pores significantly improved the compactness of ACs. As a result, the total pore volume and specific surface area of ACs decreased from 4.960×10-1 cm3/g and 1020.514 m2/g, respectively, to 3.383×10-4 cm3/g and 0.624 m2/g. Additionally, the average peak pressure of individual particles increased from the original 7.8 N to 44.94 N, and the crush ratio at a closure pressure of 52 MPa decreased by 31.5%. Furthermore, due to the low-density characteristics of the modified material, the KP-ACs exhibit a significant increase in compressive strength while maintaining their ultra-low-density properties of 1.4923 g/cm3. As a result, they perform much better than commercial quartz sand proppants in terms of compressive strength and durability.

The Fourier transform infrared (IR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analyses confirmed that the poly(St-co-MMA)/FA composites were successfully prepared. The morphology analysis indicated that the composite microspheres show good sphericity, and FA powder was evenly dispersed in the matrix. The apparent density of the microspheres was between 1 and 1.3 g/cm3, which is suitable for hydraulic fracturing. Furthermore, the compressive strength and thermostability were dramatically improved with the incorporation of FA, which could withstand high pressures and temperatures underground. The obtained poly(St-co-MMA)/FA composite microspheres are promising for application as an ultra-lightweight (ULW) proppant in oil or gas exploitation, which provides a new approach for the design of high performance proppants.

Abstract:The growing emphasis on environmental protection in petroleum exploitation results in a high demand for ultra-lightweight (ULW) proppants. This work involves fabricating ULW proppant utilizing suspension polymerization, in which alkyl chain decorated natural clay diatomite (Dia) is incorporated into poly(methyl methacrylate-co-styrene) (poly(MMA-co-St)). The obtained poly(MMA-co-St)/Dia composite beads exhibit a low apparent density ranging from 1.025 to 1.213 g cm−3, and show an impressively low crushing rate of 0.99 % under 52 MPa. The rigid and thermally stable Dia crosslinks with poly(MMA-co-St) matrix, which increases the network density and restricts the movement of the molecular chain, thereby enhancing both the mechanical and thermal stability of poly(MMA-co-St)/Dia. Additionally, these composite beads display minimal acid solubility and low turbidity. The exceptional mechanical and thermal stability (attributed to the reinforcement effect and thermal barrier effect of inorganic Dia, as well as the synergistic effect of the copolymerization of MMA and styrene), along with the low acid solubility and turbidity, enabling the poly(MMA-co-St)/Dia composite to replace traditional proppants and be applied in hydraulic fracturing for oil and gas exploitation.

Abstract:Aiming at the problems of the high density of conventional proppant and poor sand carrying performance of slick water in shale oil and gas exploitation. A kind of polymer microsphere with low density and high strength and strong hydrophobic properties (LHSPs) was synthesized by using a silane coupling agent in one step and used as proppants in petroleum fracturing. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra showed that the silane coupling agent formed a rough interface on the particles, which greatly improved the strength and hydrophobicity of the microspheres. The density of LHSPs is 1.075 g·cm - 3; Under 69 MPa, the breakage rate of LHSPs was 6.3%. The static water contact Angle is 124°, showing strong hydrophobic state. Meanwhile, the suspension performance test further shows that the ratio of quartz sand to LHSPs settlement is 288 at 120 °C. Water control experiments have also been used to prove that LHSPs can reduce the velocity of water flow and achieve the purpose of water control. The conductivity test shows that LHSPs have good conductivity in gas phase. As the pressure rises to 69 MPa, the quartz sand and LHSPs deflection capacity multiple reached 20 times. This work proves that the preparation of LHSPs is successful and has a broad application prospect in improving the fracturing effect and enhancing shale oil and gas recovery. Graphical

Preparation and Properties of Lightweight Amphiphobic Proppant for Hydraulic Fracturing

Abstract:The wettability of the proppant is crucial in optimizing the flowback of fracturing fluids and improving the recovery of the produced hydrocarbons. Neutral wet proppants have been proven to improve the fluid flow by reducing the interaction between the fluid and the proppant surface. In this study, a lightweight amphiphobic proppant (LWAP) was prepared by coating a lightweight ceramic proppant (LWCP) with phenolic resin, epoxy resin, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and trimethoxy(1H,1H,2H,2H-heptadecafluorodecyl)silane (TMHFS) using a layer-by-layer method. The results indicated that the LWAP exhibited a breakage ratio of 2% under 52 MPa (7.5 K) closure stress, with an apparent density of 2.12 g/cm3 and a bulk density of 1.21 g/cm3. The contact angles of water and olive oil were 125° and 104°, respectively, changing to 124° and 96° after displacement by water and diesel oil. A comparison showed that the LWAP could transport over a significantly longer distance than the LWCP, with the length increasing by more than 80%. Meanwhile, the LWAP displayed notable resistance to scale deposition on the proppant surface compared to the LWCP. Furthermore, the maintained conductivity of the LWAP was higher than that of the LWCP after displacement by water and oil phases alternately. The modified proppant could minimize production declines during hydrocarbon extraction in unconventional reservoirs.
Hydrophobic epoxy resin coated proppants with ultra-high self-suspension ability and enhanced liquid conductivity

Abstract:Proppant is a key material for enhancing unconventional oil and gas production which requires a long distance of migration and efficient liquid conductivity paths within the hydraulic fracture. However, it is difficult to find a proppant with both high self-suspension ability and liquid conductivity. Here, a simple method is developed to coat epoxy resin onto the ceramic proppant and fabricate a novel coated proppant with high hydrophobicity, self-suspension, and liquid conductivity performance. Compared with uncoated ceramic proppants, the epoxy resin coated (ERC) proppant has a high self-suspension ability nearly 16 times that of the uncoated proppants. Besides, the hydrophobic property and the liquid conductivity of the ERC proppant increased by 83.8% and 16.71%, respectively, compared with the uncoated proppants. In summary, this novel ERC proppant provides new insights into the design of functional proppants, which are expected to be applied to oil and gas production.

Abstract:Abstract Proppant plays a critical role in the exploitation of oil and gas, especially in the development of nonconventional oil and gas resources. Proppants are small spheres that have adequate strength to withstand high closure stresses to keep cracks open; therefore, hydrocarbon flows smoothly into the wellbore. However, traditional proppants are prone to settling in hydraulic fracturing operations, which seriously affects the operation effect. To this end, ultralow-weight proppants have been extensively employed in the petroleum industry. One of the widespread forms of ultralow-weight proppant application in the oil and gas industry is related to light density. Ultralow-weight proppants will provide substantial flow paths with a considerably high propped surface area and remarkably reduce fine generation and scaling. This paper presents a comprehensive review of over 50 papers published in the past several decades on ultralow-weight proppants. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the current ultralow-weight proppant development status in raw materials, manufacturing process, performance characteristics, hydrophobic and lipophilic capabilities, and field application to promote the research of new ultralow-weight proppants. Lastly, this study analyzes the current challenges and emphasizes the development direction of fractured proppants.

Abstract:A series of polystyrene/carbon black composite microspheres as oil fracturing low-density proppant have been successfully synthesized via one-step technique of suspension polymerization. The apparent density of the microspheres was around 1.025-1.077 g/cm(3) which favored the hydraulic transportation in oil drilling; the thermal stability of the proppants was improved remarkably. The oil permeation performance of low density proppants with optimum addition of CB was superior to commercial available products. Hence, PS/CB composite microspheres serving as the newly developed low-cost and low-density proppant would have a good prospect in the field of oil exploitation.

Abstract:Proppant plays a significant role in the hydraulic fracturing process, which can affect the production of oil and gas wells. Due to the high density and low adhesion force, the settling speed of traditional proppants is fast, which will lead to the blockage of a crack channel. In this study, a proppant with double layer structure is fabricated by coating epoxy-resin and shaly detritus on ceramic proppants for the first time, respectively. The epoxy-resin enables the shaly detritus to be coated on the proppant successfully, which can provide a new method for shaly detritus treatment. The adhesive ability of shaly detritus and epoxy-resin coated proppants (SEPs) is improved by 10.4% under the load force of 500 nN, which prolongs the time for the fracture to close. At the same time, the suspending ability of SEPs is two times higher than the uncoated proppants. Once the guar gum solution concentration is 0.3 wt%, the settling time of SEPs is 36.7% longer than that of the uncoated proppants, which can effectively reduce the settlement of proppants in the crack. In addition, the hydrophobicity of the SEPs is enhanced, which reduces the water-oil ratio of crude oil and increases the liquid conductivity tested by deionized water. In summary, this new proppant is expected to promote the development of unconventional oil and gas resources.

Abstract:Proppants play an important role to increase oil and gas output in shale oil and gas development process. Tracers are used to study the degree of heterogeneity and dynamic equivalence between injection and production wells to judge the state of oil reservoir. However, it is difficult to integrate both slow-release tracing and shale supporting functions in one material. The development of functional coated proppants with tracer slow-release function is of great significance. Here a simple method is developed to introduce a carbon quantum dots (CQDs) into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) coated proppants and fabricate novel self-suspension proppants with tracer slow-release function. The PVA coating layer on ceramic proppants achieves the self-suspension ability. In the well, the PVA film melted in fracturing fluid and the CQDs were released as a tracer for downhole monitoring. The surface adhesion force of PVA-CQDs coated proppants is 2 times larger than that of ordinary ceramic proppants, and the liquid conductivity of the self-suspension slow-release tracer proppants (SSTP) can reach 51 D cm, which is 22.45% higher than original ceramic proppants at the closure pressure of 40 MPa. This work combined the coated proppants with the quantum dot tracer and obtained a new type of coated proppants with tracer slow-release function, which has a promising significance to improve oil and gas production and conducting cross-well monitoring.

Abstract:The efficient treatment of oil-water emulsions under acidic condition remains a widespread concern. Poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer with hyperbranched structures and a large amount of primary and tertiary amino groups has exhibited advantages to solve this issue. Here, a novel poly(vinylidene fluoride)-graft-(SiO2 nanoparticles and PAMAM dendrimers) (PVDF-g-SiO2 NPs/PAMAM) membrane was fabricated using a surface-grafting strategy. SiO2 NPs were immobilized on PVDF-g-poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) membranes for improving the surface roughness, and PAMAM dendrimers were further immobilized on the membrane surface by interfacial polymerization (IP) for improving the surface energy. The obtained membrane demonstrated a water contact angle and a stable underwater-oil contact angle of 0 degrees and >150 degrees, respectively. These characteristics endowed the membrane with excellent water permeability [>3100 L/(m(2).h) at 0.9 bar] and separation efficiency (>99%) during oil-water separation. Furthermore, the PAMAM chain will extend from a collapsed state into a fully extension state because of the protonation of amine groups under acidic condition, thus achieving a low underwater oil-adhesion property, fouling resistance, desirable stability, and recyclability (over 12 cycles) during usage. This work shows a promising prospect for the treatment of corrosive emulsions under acidic condition.
Preparation of Poly(methyl Methacrylate)/ultrafine CaCO3 Composite Particles by In-Situ Dispersion Polymerization

Abstract:In order to improve the grafting and coating of polymer on ultrafine CaCO3 particles, the anchoring of 4,4’-azobis(4-cyanopentanoic acid) (ACPA) onto ultrafine CaCO3, and dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of CaCO3 anchored with azo initiator were investigated. CaCO3 was treated with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane at first, followed by the condensation reaction with the hydroxy group of ACPA. The coupling and anchoring reactions are confirmed by infrared spectrum and element analysis. The rate of MMA dispersion polymerization increases with the amount of ACPA anchored on CaCO3, but the initiation efficiency of anchored ACPA is lower than that of free ACPA in polymerization. The grafting of PMMA on CaCO3 is also confirmed by infrared spectrum. It shows that the grafting ratio of PMMA increases with the polymerization conversion, while the grafting efficiency of PMMA decreases. The amount of anchored ACPA has no significant influence on the grafting efficiency of PMMA. PMMA/CaCO3 composite particles with higher PMMA grafting degree could be prepared by in-situ dispersion polymerization initiated by ACPA anchored on CaCO3. The dispersion stability of CaCO3 grafted with PMMA in MMA and tetrahydrofuran is significantly improved in comparison with that of unmodified CaCO3.

Abstract:Oil-based drilling cutting pyrolysis residues (ODCPRs), bauxite, and sintering additives were applied to manufacture ceramic proppants with low density and high strength in this work. The effect of ODCPRs ratio, sintering temperature, holding time, and the content of additives on the performance of the proppants was comprehensively investigated, respectively. And the sintering mechanism of proppants was also discussed according to the phase, microstructure, and thermal behavior analyses. The results revealed that at the best sintering condition (1280 °C, holding for 60 min), and a mass ratio (ODCPRs: bauxite: MnO 2 at 3:7:0.1), the well-developed granular corundum and acicular mullite formed inside the proppants and interspersed with each other to form a dense structure. The proppants presented low density and high strength as the bulk density of 1.48 g/cm 3 , the apparent density of 2.94 g/cm 3 , a breakage ratio of 5.25% under 52 MPa closed pressure, and the acid solubility of 4.80%, which could well meet the requirement of the standards of SY/T 5108-2014. This work provided a new pathway for recycling ODCPRs and the fabrication of high-performance proppants.

Abstract:A novel heterogeneous polymerization technique, termed as self-stabilized precipitation (2SP) polymerization, was developed beyond emulsion/dispersion/suspension. Through quiescent polymerization, self-nucleation and surface deposition process, a stable colloid composed of uniform polymer particles and reaction medium was formed without the use of any stabilizers. More importantly, the polymer particles can be easily separated from the solvent and the supernatant liquid can be recycled, making this strategy a truly “green” polymerization process. This technique leads to several revolutionary advances: (1) one of the most simple, efficient and green strategies to produce uniform, size-tunable and functional polymer nanoparticles; (2) the polymerization reactivity of α-olefin is highly enhanced through copolymerization with maleic anhydride; (3) generation of functional copolymer particles directly from single olefinic monomer or complex olefinic mixtures (including C4/C5/C9 fractions) without any further purification, which provides a new way to transform huge amount of olefinic compounds in C4/C5/C9 fractions into valuable functional polymers.

Abstract:Fracturing (hydraulic fracturing technology) treatment in an unconventional reservoir was a key technology. For an increased in production, effective proppant placement in hydraulic fracture systems was important in operating conditions. Especially, two key factors, proppant transportation distance and packing height, determined the final conductivity and gas production. This study aimed to develop a new type of proppant and evaluated its properties. Based on two new types of materials that could modify the surface of the proppant and fiber, the fiber and proppant coupled with each other due to the surface treatment and could transport longer and pile up higher in the fracture. Therefore, to furtherly figure out this new proppant property, visual fracture models were designed and used with some key factors. This study showed that this new proppant had some remarkable properties and had a better transportation efficiency in visual fracture models.The findings of the study were as follows: (1) The fully coupled fiber–proppant (FCFP) had high grafting distributed channel rate and pavement efficiency in both fresh water and slick water. (2) The FCFP formed a cellular pattern in the fracture and established high-porosity channels.The findings might guide the new operation technology, optimize operation parameters, improve proppant transportation efficiency, and maintain a good proppant distribution in fracture systems in the future.

Abstract:Abstract Hydraulic fracturing is an important method to improve the oil and gas production in low and ultra-low permeability reservoirs. A remarkable progress has been made in the technology and materials. However, the existing conventional hydraulic fracturing technology faces problems, such as reservoir damage, equipment abrasion, low effective propped area, and early screen-out. Therefore, a novel self-propped fracturing fluid (SPFF) was proposed, which remains in the liquid-phase before entering the fracture, and forms solid proppant particles when stimulated by the reservoir temperature after entering the fracture (Chemical proppant, CP). In this paper, the micro-morphology of CP was studied by SEM, and the temperature of the CP-formed was measured by the CP formation experiments at room temperature and field conditions. Furthermore, the compressive strength, thermal stability, stability in formation fluid, acid and alkali, leak-off, core damage, and fracture conductivity of the developed SPFF were tested. The test results show that the leak-off volume and core damage level of SPFF were less than that of conventional fracturing fluid, thereby effectively reducing the damage to the reservoir permeability. The CP exhibited good performance in terms of compressive strength, thermal stability, stability in reservoir fluid and treatment fluid. Besides, the conductivity of the propped fracture was high. These advantages determine that CP can meet the field treatment requirements. The CP could enter any narrow fractures, and effectively solved the existing problems in the conventional fracturing technology by significantly improving the fracturing effect, especially the network fracturing effect in tight reservoir systems.

Abstract:Polymer microspheres with temperature and salt resistance were synthesized using the anti-suspension polymerization method, incorporating the functional monomers AMPS, AM, and AA. To enhance their self-gelling properties, the microspheres were designed with a core–shell structure. The shell is composed of a polymeric surfactant, fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether methacrylate (AEOMA), which serves as a thermosensitive crosslinking agent, enabling self-crosslinking upon shell decomposition, addressing compatibility with reservoir pore throat dimensions. Comprehensive characterizations including infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, and laser particle size analysis were conducted. The microspheres exhibited successful synthesis, a nanoscale size, and regular spherical morphology. They demonstrated excellent temperature and salt resistance, making them suitable for high-temperature, high-salinity reservoir profile control. With a stable three-dimensional network structure, the microspheres displayed good expansion behavior due to hydrophilic groups along the polymer chains, resulting in favorable water affinity. Even after aging, the microspheres maintained their gelling state with a distinct and stable microscopic network skeleton. They exhibited superior plugging performance in low-permeability reservoirs, while effectively improving water absorption profiles in reservoirs with permeability contrasts of 10 to 80, thereby enhancing oil recovery.
