Abstract:In recent years the orthopedic and sports medicine communities have given considerable attention to the issues surrounding the role of proprioception in mediating muscle function and contributing to joint stabilization. In the general consensus of the participants of the workshop, however, there is confusion across the various disciplines, related to the mechanisms being described and the contribution that proprioception affords to joint homeostasis. This lack of a unified and conclusive body of knowledge, and the absence of a true appreciation of the sensory and motor systems associated with proprioception, has resulted in the inappropriate use of both terminology and the modes for testing the various mechanisms. This introductory section provides a basis for the terminology used to describe the mechanisms within the nervous and musculoskeletal systems as they relate to proprioception and neuromuscular control. At the end of this section we include a glossary of terms, Sensorimotor System Terminology, which define the system and its components. We have attempted to provide definitions based upon the original anatomical and physiological descriptions within which they are embedded. At the very least, the participants in the workshop aspired to produce a common language that will be used for future investigation and reporting of relevant findings related to the sensorimotor system. This section also highlights a few of the contemporary issues and controversies essential to understanding the sensorimotor system, which are detailed in the chapters to follow.
