Abstract:The somatosensory system is important for many functions, such as tactile recognition, the perception of our body, and motor actions. We present a comprehensive review of the human and animal literature on somatosensory processing over the past 10 years and evaluate how well existing models can accommodate the new observations. Based on these observations and a survey of the brain structures involved in somatosensation, we suggest that a new model is needed that describes multiple networks involved in separate subfunctions. These networks are highly interconnected and often multimodal in nature. The model includes basic somatosensory processing and five higher-order networks involved in haptic object recognition and memory, body perception, body ownership, affective processing, and action.
Making developmental sense of the senses, their origin and function

Abstract:The primary senses-touch, taste, sight, smell, and hearing-connect animals with their environments and with one another. Aside from the eyes, the primary sense organs of vertebrates and the peripheral sensory pathways that relay their inputs arise from two transient stem cell populations: the neural crest and the cranial placodes. In this chapter we consider the senses from historical and cultural perspectives, and discuss the senses as biological faculties. We begin with the embryonic origin of the neural crest and cranial placodes from within the neural plate border of the ectodermal germ layer. Then, we describe the major chemical (i.e. olfactory and gustatory) and mechanical (i.e. vestibulo-auditory and somatosensory) senses, with an emphasis on the developmental interactions between neural crest and cranial placodes that shape their structures and functions.

Abstract:Emotional experiences are driven, in part, by the way we process and integrate information from different sensory modalities. Understanding how perceptual and emotional systems interact to give rise to subjective feelings is an important, complex and challenging issue, requiring new approaches and integrative thinking that fuses the fundamentals of low-level sensory perception with higher-level cognitive and affective processes. The Theme Issue 'Sensing and feeling: an integrative approach to sensory processing and emotional experience' showcases fifteen theoretical, empirical, and review articles from experts working at the intersection of perception and emotion, encompassing multiple sensory systems (visual, auditory, tactile and interoceptive), clinical and non-clinical perspectives (e.g. affective disorders and hearing loss), contextual and social perspectives, and complex emotional experiences in special populations. Articles in Part 1 emphasize recent advances across fields in sensory and emotion science and give insights into future directions. Each article in Part 2 provides more detailed and specific methodological approaches or theoretical models, and focuses on basic mechanisms linking sensation to emotional experience. This article is part of the theme issue 'Sensing and feeling: an integrative approach to sensory processing and emotional experience'.

Abstract:The somatosensory system helps the human body to become aware of various stimuli and to interact with its surroundings. Humans are able to identify and to process abundant sensory information quickly due to their unique perception characteristics. As the largest sensory organ, skin has a large number of discrete receptors to sense and to transform stimuli of touch, pressure, pain, temperature, <i>etc</i>. into electrical signals, which are preprocessed at various levels before reaching the brain, greatly reducing the computational burden on the central nervous system. In addition, the conduction speed varies for different stimulus information, which simplifies the parallel processing of a variety of information. In this Perspective, we discuss a bioinspired design for a flexible smart sensor system by simulating the human somatosensory system. In this design, sensors with selective responses, signals separated in time sequences, and hierarchical information processing are adopted to optimize the sensing and perceiving processes, to reduce power consumption, and to improve the speed of a flexible smart sensor system.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Small-diameter afferents do not just subserve pain and temperature sensibilities, important for protection of the body though they are: there is a system of low-threshold unmyelinated afferents that respond to light stroking (C-tactile afferents) and they are believed to subserve the affective components of touch. Patients with large-fibre sensory neuropathies exhibit skin sympathetic responses to stroking, and report the stimuli as feeling pleasant. Moreover, the posterior insula is activated. Patients with small-diameter sensory neuropathies, specifically those with congenital insensitivity to pain, suffer from cumulative injuries that can lead to joint degeneration. There is evidence that the nociceptive (and sympathetic) axons die because nerve growth factor is not being produced by the target tissues; patients with congenital insensitivity to pain have mutations in the NTRK1 gene, the gene responsible for producing the TrkA receptor, but there is also evidence for mutations in the SCN9A gene, which codes for a specific subunit of the voltage-gated sodium channel. Specific mutations, leading to clusters of cases of congenital insensitivity to pain, have been found in several geographical locations, with several genetic mutations having been documented. Interestingly, even patients with congenital insensitivity to pain, despite having never experienced pain, can still empathise with the pain in others-we do not need to feel pain in order to empathise, but we do need to feel pain in order to ensure that our body looks after itself.

Abstract:Biological senses are critical for the survival of organisms. A great deal of attention has focused on elucidating the underlying physiological mechanisms of the senses, inspiring various sensing techniques. Despite progress in this area, gaps remain between the biological senses and conventional sensing techniques. In this Perspective, we propose the concept of artificial sense technology, which mimics the biological senses but differs in terms of objective sensing and intelligent feedback capabilities. We first summarize recent progress in the use of nanotechnologies to emulate the biological senses and then outline the advantages of artificial sense technology, which extend the capabilities of its biological counterparts. We envision artificial sense technology as a powerful perceptual interface that will play key roles in sensation substitution, digital healthcare, animal interactions, plant electronics, smart robots, and other areas that enrich the connections of the physical and virtual worlds.

Abstract:Traditionally, architectural practice has been dominated by the eye/sight. In recent decades, though, architects and designers have increasingly started to consider the other senses, namely sound, touch (including proprioception, kinesthesis, and the vestibular sense), smell, and on rare occasions, even taste in their work. As yet, there has been little recognition of the growing understanding of the multisensory nature of the human mind that has emerged from the field of cognitive neuroscience research. This review therefore provides a summary of the role of the human senses in architectural design practice, both when considered individually and, more importantly, when studied collectively. For it is only by recognizing the fundamentally multisensory nature of perception that one can really hope to explain a number of surprising crossmodal environmental or atmospheric interactions, such as between lighting colour and thermal comfort and between sound and the perceived safety of public space. At the same time, however, the contemporary focus on synaesthetic design needs to be reframed in terms of the crossmodal correspondences and multisensory integration, at least if the most is to be made of multisensory interactions and synergies that have been uncovered in recent years. Looking to the future, the hope is that architectural design practice will increasingly incorporate our growing understanding of the human senses, and how they influence one another. Such a multisensory approach will hopefully lead to the development of buildings and urban spaces that do a better job of promoting our social, cognitive, and emotional development, rather than hindering it, as has too often been the case previously.

Abstract:Humans have seven main senses, each of which has its own unique sensory organs. These organs relay different kinds of information about the outside world (sights, sounds, etc.) to the brain. The information the sensory organs relay is then combined together throughout the brain. This combining of information from multiple senses is known as multisensory integration, and this is how healthy brains operate. However, for some people with a condition called synesthesia, activating a single sense (for instance, sight alone) can trigger multiple sensations such as sight and sound. Researchers are investigating how to use multisensory integration to help patients who have lost the ability to use one of their senses. For example, in blind patients, information from a healthy sense like the sense of touch could be used to make up for decreased vision. This is an exciting area of current and future research.

Abstract:Incorporating the fact that the senses are embodied is necessary for an organism to interpret sensory information. Before a unified perception of the world can be formed, sensory signals must be processed with reference to body representation. The various attributes of the body such as shape, proportion, posture, and movement can be both derived from the various sensory systems and can affect perception of the world (including the body itself). In this review we examine the relationships between sensory and motor information, body representations, and perceptions of the world and the body. We provide several examples of how the body affects perception (including but not limited to body perception). First we show that body orientation effects visual distance perception and object orientation. Also, visual-auditory crossmodal-correspondences depend on the orientation of the body: audio "high" frequencies correspond to a visual "up" defined by both gravity and body coordinates. Next, we show that perceived locations of touch is affected by the orientation of the head and eyes on the body, suggesting a visual component to coding body locations. Additionally, the reference-frame used for coding touch locations seems to depend on whether gaze is static or moved relative to the body during the tactile task. The perceived attributes of the body such as body size, affect tactile perception even at the level of detection thresholds and two-point discrimination. Next, long-range tactile masking provides clues to the posture of the body in a canonical body schema. Finally, ownership of seen body parts depends on the orientation and perspective of the body part in view. Together, all of these findings demonstrate how sensory and motor information, body representations, and perceptions (of the body and the world) are interdependent.

Abstract:Taste and smell are very important chemical senses that provide indispensable information on food quality, potential mates and potential danger. In recent decades, much progress has been achieved regarding the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms of taste and odor senses. Recently, biosensors have been developed for detecting odorants and tastants as well as for studying ligand-receptor interactions. This review summarizes the currently available biosensing approaches, which can be classified into two main categories: in vitro and in vivo approaches. The former is based on utilizing biological components such as taste and olfactory tissues, cells and receptors, as sensitive elements. The latter is dependent on signals recorded from animals' signaling pathways using implanted microelectrodes into living animals. Advantages and disadvantages of these two approaches, as well as differences in terms of sensing principles and applications are highlighted. The main current challenges, future trends and prospects of research in biomimetic taste and odor sensors are discussed.

The Senses Considered as One Perceptual System

Abstract:J. J. Gibson (1966) rejected many classical assumptions about perception but retained 1 that dates back to classical antiquity: the assumption of separate senses. We suggest that Gibson's retention of this assumption compromised his novel concept of perceptual systems. We argue that lawful, 1:1 specification of the animal--environment interaction, which is necessary for perception to be direct, cannot exist in individual forms of ambient energy, such as light, or sound. We argue that specification exists exclusively in emergent, higher order patterns that extend across different forms of ambient energy. These emergent, higher order patterns constitute the global array. If specification exists exclusively in the global array, then direct perception cannot be based upon detection of patterns that are confined to individual forms of ambient energy and, therefore, Gibson's argument for the existence of several distinct perceptual systems cannot be correct. We argue that the senses function as a single, irreducible perceptual system that is sensitive exclusively to patterns in the global array. That is, rather than distinct perceptual systems there exists only 1 perceptual system.

In the process of thinking and perception of architecture there is always more importance given to visual senses than the other senses and the problems of contemporary architecture is rooted in visual dominance and may be the result of unbalanced senses system. All our information about our surrounding world is achieved by our senses and this information help us in perception and recognition. Abstract:Synesthesia, conceived as a neuropsychological condition, may prove valuable in studying the interaction between humans and machines by analyzing the co-occurrence of sensory or cognitive responses triggered by a stimulus. In our approach, synesthesia is elevated beyond a mere perceptual-cognitive anomaly, offering insights into the reciprocal interaction between humans and the digital system, steering novel experimental design and enriching results interpretations.This review broadens the traditional scope, conventionally rooted in neuroscience and psychology, by considering how computer science can approach this condition. The interdisciplinary examination revolves around two primary viewpoints: one associating this condition with specific cognitive, perceptual, and behavioral anomalies, and the other acknowledging it as a prevalent human experience. Synesthesia, in this review, emerges as a significant model for Human Computer Interaction (HCI). The exploration of this specific condition aims to decipher how atypical pathways of perception and cognition can be encoded, empowering machines to actively engage in processing information from both the body and the environment. The authors attempt to amalgamate findings and insights from various disciplines, fostering collaboration between computer science, neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy.The overarching objective is to construct a comprehensive framework that elucidates how synesthesia and anomalies in information processing can be harnessed within HCI, with a particular emphasis on contributing to digital technologies for medical research and enhancing patients care and comfort. In this sense, the review endeavors also to fill the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application.

Abstract:The sensation of mechanical force underlies many of our daily activities. As the sense of touch determines the quality of life, the subconscious sense of proprioception and visceral mechanosensation is indispensible for survival. Many internal organs change shape, either as an active part of their physiology or passively due to body movements. Importantly, these shape changes need to be sensed and balanced properly to prevent organ failure and dysfunction. Consequently, a failure to properly sense volume changes of internal organs has a huge clinical relevance, manifested by a plethora of congenital and age-related diseases. Here we review novel data on mammalian stretch reception as well as classical studies from insect and nematode proprioceptors with the aim to highlight the missing link between organ-level deformation and mechanosensing on the molecular level.

Abstract:To classify human sensations, the phrase of “five senses” consisting of vision, hearing, touch, taste, and smell, has been used from olden days. This classification is triggered by the ancient Greeks. However, there are at least nine types or over twenty types of human sensory channels if the classification is considered from a practical standpoint. In the field of smart technology centered on humans, we can not fully utilize this perception. Also, perceptual phenomena that give rise to different kinds of sensations called synesthesia are unknown areas also in computer programming. In this paper, we will verify the possibility of systematization for its application.

Abstract:Age-related sensory impairment is a slow and gradual progress, which affects multiple modalities. Two contradictory hypotheses exist about the age-related decline of sensory thresholds. The common factor theory assumes one underlying factor-which accounts for the loss of several sensory modalities simultaneously-and the specific factor theory predicts that the sensory decline is uncorrelated between different modalities. In this study, we aimed to explore whether (i) there is a common factor of sensory thresholds in older people, (ii) older people assume that sensory decline in one modality also affects other modalities, (iii) there is a relation between sensory threshold and the subjective assessment of sensory function. This was accomplished by collecting both threshold measures and self-reported ratings for smell, hearing, taste, vision, and touch function in a group of 104 older people (mean age: 67.2 years; SD: 9.85; range: 50-100 years). Results indicated that there was no common factor of sensory thresholds, hence an impairment in one modality did not necessarily imply a shortfall in other modalities. In contrast, our results suggested one or two common factor(s) for the participants' ratings. Participants who reported a diminished function in one sense tended to generalize this rating to the other senses as well. The correspondence between subjective ratings and sensory thresholds was relatively good for vision and audition, although no correlations were observed for the other domains. These findings have implications for clinicians, suggesting that subjective measures should be combined with sensory threshold measurements when evaluating sensory dysfunction. Also, these data convey a positive message for older people and their physicians by showing that loss in one sensory modality does not necessarily generalize to losses across all sensory modalities.

Abstract:Somatosensory deficits from stroke, spinal cord injury, or other neurologic damage can lead to a significant degree of functional impairment. The primary (SI) and secondary (SII) somatosensory cortices encode information in a medial to lateral organization. SI is generally organized topographically, with more discrete cortical representations of specific body regions. SII regions corresponding to anatomical areas are less discrete and may represent a more functional rather than topographic organization. Human somatosensory research continues to map cortical areas of sensory processing with efforts primarily focused on hand and upper extremity information in SI. However, research into SII and other body regions is lacking. In this review, we synthesize the current state of knowledge regarding the cortical organization of human somatosensation and discuss potential applications for brain computer interface. In addition to accurate individualized mapping of cortical somatosensation, further research is required to uncover the neurophysiological mechanisms of how somatosensory information is encoded in the cortex.

Abstract:By use of suitable methods, different spots on the skin surface can be shown to be selectively sensitive to one of four sensory qualities in decreasing order of density: pain, touch, cool and warm. The presence of such spots was observed virtually simultaneously in the early 1880s by three independent investigators. Two papers on punctuate sensitivity of the skin were published in 1882 and 1883 by Magnus Blix of Uppsala University in Sweden; three papers were published in 1884 by Alfred Goldscheider, a German army doctor; and one was published in 1885 by Henry Donaldson of Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Donaldson's findings originated from a serendipitous observation. In contrast, Blix's and Goldscheider's experiments were based on Johannes Muller's concept of "specific sense energies" and the extension of this idea to sensory qualities (the law of "specific nerve energies") by others, including Hermann von Helmholtz. The discovery of different types of sensory spots had considerable influence on other researchers of the period, including Max von Frey, but has only recently been substantiated by electrophysiological experiments.
