Abstract:V. Turaev defined recently an operation of "Trimming" for pseudo-metric spaces and analysed the tight span of (pseudo-)metric spaces via this process. In this work we investigate the trimming of finite subspaces of the Manhattan plane. We show that this operation amounts for them to taking the metric center set and we give an algorithm to construct the tight spans via trimming.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates that every ultrametric space is homeomorphic to a clade space of a pruned tree, i.e., a subspace of a tree's canopy. Furthermore, it characterizes several topological properties of ultrametrizable spaces through the features of their representing trees. This approach suggests that topological properties of ultrametrizable spaces should be studies via the study of naturally ordered pruned trees.

Abstract:A {\em tree cover} of a metric space $(X,d)$ is a collection of trees, so that every pair $x,y\in X$ has a low distortion path in one of the trees. If it has the stronger property that every point $x\in X$ has a single tree with low distortion paths to all other points, we call this a {\em Ramsey} tree cover. Tree covers and Ramsey tree covers have been studied by \cite{BLMN03,GKR04,CGMZ05,GHR06,MN07}, and have found several important algorithmic applications, e.g. routing and distance oracles. The union of trees in a tree cover also serves as a special type of spanner, that can be decomposed into a few trees with low distortion paths contained in a single tree; Such spanners for Euclidean pointsets were presented by \cite{ADMSS95}. In this paper we devise efficient algorithms to construct tree covers and Ramsey tree covers for general, planar and doubling metrics. We pay particular attention to the desirable case of distortion close to 1, and study what can be achieved when the number of trees is small. In particular, our work shows a large separation between what can be achieved by tree covers vs. Ramsey tree covers.

Abstract:Graph modification problems ask for the minimal number of vertex/edge additions/deletions needed to make a graph satisfy some predetermined property. A (meta) problem of this type, which was raised by Yannakakis in 1981, asks to determine for which properties ${\mathcal P}$, it is NP-hard to compute the smallest number of edge deletions needed to make a graph satisfy ${\mathcal P}$. Despite being extensively studied in the past 40 years, this problem is still wide open. In fact, it is open even when ${\mathcal P}$ is the property of being $H$-free, for some fixed graph $H$. In this case we use $\text{rem}_{H}(G)$ to denote the smallest number of edge deletions needed to turn $G$ into an $H$-free graph. Alon, Sudakov and Shapira [Annals of Math. 2009] proved that if $H$ is not bipartite, then computing $\text{rem}_{H}(G)$ is NP-hard. They left open the problem of classifying the bipartite graphs $H$ for which computing $\text{rem}_{H}(G)$ is NP-hard. In this paper we resolve this problem when $H$ is a forest, showing that computing $\text{rem}_{H}(G)$ is polynomial-time solvable if $H$ is a star forest and NP-hard otherwise. Our main innovation in this work lies in introducing a new graph theoretic approach for Yannakakis's problem, which differs significantly from all prior works on this subject. In particular, we prove new results concerning an old and famous conjecture of Erdős and Sós, which are of independent interest.

Abstract:Minimal spanning trees on infinite vertex sets are investigated. A criterion for minimality of a spanning tree having a finite length is obtained, which generalizes the corresponding classical result for finite sets. It is given an analytic description of the set of all infinite metric spaces which a minimal spanning tree exists for. A sufficient condition for a minimal spanning tree existence is obtained in terms of distances achievability between partitions elements of the metric space under consideration. Besides, a concept of locally minimal spanning tree is introduced, several properties of such trees are described, and relations of those trees with (globally) minimal spanning trees are investigated.

Abstract:It is shown that a locally finite ultrametric space $(X, d)$ is generated by labeled tree if and only if, for every open ball $B \subseteq X$, there is a point $c \in B$ such that $d(x, c) = \operatorname{diam} B$ whenever $x \in B$ and $x \neq c$. For every finite ultrametric space $Y$ we construct an ultrametric space $Z$ having the smallest possible number of points such that $Z$ is generated by labeled tree and $Y$ is isometric to a subspace of $Z$. It is proved that for a given $Y$, such a space $Z$ is unique up to isometry.

Abstract:For $t,g>0$, a vertex-weighted graph of total weight $W$ is $(t,g)$-trimmable if it contains a vertex-induced subgraph of total weight at least $(1-1/t)W$ and with no simple path of more than $g$ edges. A family of graphs is trimmable if for each constant $t>0$, there is a constant $g=g(t)$ such that every vertex-weighted graph in the family is $(t,g)$-trimmable. We show that every family of graphs of bounded domino treewidth is trimmable. This implies that every family of graphs of bounded degree is trimmable if the graphs in the family have bounded treewidth or are planar. Based on this result, we derive a polynomial-time approximation scheme for the problem of labeling weighted points with nonoverlapping sliding labels of unit height and given lengths so as to maximize the total weight of the labeled points. This settles one of the last major open questions in the theory of map labeling.

Lipschitz Functions on Unions and Quotients of Metric Spaces

Abstract:Given a finite collection $\{X_i\}_{i\in I}$ of metric spaces, each of which has finite Nagata dimension and Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $L^1$, we prove that their union has Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $L^1$. The short proof we provide is based on the Pelczyński decomposition method. A corollary is a solution to a question of Kaufmann about the union of two planar curves with tangential intersection. A second focus of the paper is on a special case of this result that can be studied using geometric methods. That is, we prove that the Lipschitz free space of a union of finitely many quasiconformal trees is isomorphic to $L^1$. These geometric methods also reveal that any metric quotient of a quasiconformal tree has Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $L^1$. Finally, we analyze Lipschitz light maps on unions and metric quotients of quasiconformal trees in order to prove that the Lipschitz dimension of any such union or quotient is equal to 1.

Abstract:For a finitely generated group $G$, we introduce an asymmetric pseudometric on projectivized deformation spaces of $G$-trees, using stretching factors of $G$-equivariant Lipschitz maps, that generalizes the Lipschitz metric on Outer space and is an analogue of the Thurston metric on Teichmüller space. We show that in the case of irreducible $G$-trees distances are always realized by minimal stretch maps, can be computed in terms of hyperbolic translation lengths, and geodesics exist. We then study displacement functions on projectivized deformation spaces of $G$-trees and classify automorphisms of $G$. As an application, we prove existence of train track representatives for irreducible automorphisms of virtually free groups and nonelementary generalized Baumslag-Solitar groups that contain no solvable Baumslag-Solitar group $BS(1,n)$ with $n\geq 2$.

Abstract:A new method of metric space investigation, based on classification of its finite subspaces, is suggested. It admits to derive information on metric space properties which is encoded in metric. The method describes geometry in terms of only metric. It admits to remove constraints imposed usually on metric (the triangle axiom and nonnegativity of the squared metric), and to use the metric space for description of the space-time and other geometries with indefinite metric. Describing space-time and using this method, one can explain quantum effects as geometric effects, i.e. as space-time properties

Abstract:We investigate path-, ray- and branch spaces of trees, certain topological spaces naturally associated with order theoretic trees, and provide topological characterisations for these spaces in terms of the existence of certain kinds of (sub-)bases. Our results yield a solution to a problem due to Diestel from 1992, by establishing the following equivalences for any Hausdorff space $X$: (1) $X$ is homeomorphic to the end space of a graph, (2) $X$ is homeomorphic to the ray space of a special order tree, (3) $X$ admits a nested clopen subbase that is noetherian, hereditarily complete and $\sigma$-disjoint.

Abstract:We study the subsets of metric spaces that are negligible for the infimal length of connecting curves; such sets are called metrically removable. In particular, we show that every closed totally disconnected set with finite Hausdorff measure of codimension 1 is metrically removable, which answers a question raised by Hakobyan and Herron. The metrically removable sets are shown to be related to other classes of “thin” sets that appeared in the literature. They are also related to the removability problems for classes of holomorphic functions with restrictions on the derivative.

Abstract:The authors' primary goal in this paper is to enhance the study of topological spaces by using the order of specialization of a -space to introduce the lower topology (with a subbasis of closed sets ) and studying the interaction of the original topology and the lower topology. Using the lower topology, one can define and study new properties of the original space that provide deeper insight into its structure. One focus of study is the property R, which asserts that if the intersection of a family of finitely generated sets , finite, is contained in an open set , then the same is true for finitely many of the family. We first show that property R is equivalent to several other interesting properties, for example, the property that all closed subsets of the original space are compact in the lower topology. We then find conditions under which these spaces are compact, well-filtered, and coherent, a weaker variant of stably compact spaces. We also investigate what have been called strong -spaces, develop some of their basic properties, and make connections with the earlier considerations involving spaces satisfying property R. Two key results we obtain are that if a dcpo with the Scott topology is a strong -space, then it is well-filtered, and if additionally the Scott topology of the product is the product of the Scott topologies of the factors, then the Scott space of is sober. We also exhibit connections of this work with de Groot duality.

Abstract:Let T=(V,E) be a tree graph with non-negative weights defined on the vertices. A vertex z is called a separating vertex for u and v if the distances of z to u and v are not equal. A set of vertices L\subseteq V is a feasible solution for the non-landmarks model (NL), if for every pair of distinct vertices, u,v \in V\setminus L, there are at least two vertices of L separating them. Such a feasible solution is called a "landmark set". We analyze the structure of landmark sets for trees and design a linear time algorithm for finding a minimum cost landmark set for a given tree graph.

Abstract:We define decorated $\alpha$-stable trees which are informally obtained from an $\alpha$-stable tree by blowing up its branchpoints into random metric spaces. This generalizes the $\alpha$-stable looptrees of Curien and Kortchemski, where those metric spaces are just deterministic circles. We provide different constructions for these objects, which allows us to understand some of their geometric properties, including compactness, Hausdorff dimension and self-similarity in distribution. We prove an invariance principle which states that under some conditions, analogous discrete objects, random decorated discrete trees, converge in the scaling limit to decorated $\alpha$-stable trees. We mention a few examples where those objects appear in the context of random trees and planar maps, and we expect them to naturally arise in many more cases.

Abstract:We consider a class of infinite weighted metric trees obtained as perturbations of self-similar regular trees. Possible definitions of the boundary traces of functions in the Sobolev space on such a structure are discussed by using identifications of the tree boundary with a surface. Our approach unifies some constructions proposed by Maury, Salort, Vannier (2009) for dyadic discrete weighted trees (expansion in orthogonal bases of harmonic functions on the graph and using Haar-type bases on the domain representing the boundary), and by Nicaise, Semin (2018) and Joly, Kachanovska, Semin (2019) for fractal metric trees (approximation by finite sections and identification of the boundary with a interval): we show that both machineries give the same trace map, and for a range of parameters we establish the precise Sobolev regularity of the traces. In addition, we introduce new geometric ingredients by proposing an identification with arbitrary Riemannian manifolds. It is shown that any compact manifold admits a suitable multiscale decomposition and, therefore, can be identified with a metric tree boundary in the context of trace theorems.
