Abstract:Currently, photocatalytic technology mostly uses powdered TiO 2 catalysts, which are not conducive to recycling, limit the contact between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and the photocatalyst, and result in lower mass transfer efficiency in gas-solid reactions. Meanwhile, TiO 2 catalysts including the electrospun TiO 2 nanofibers with hydrophilic surfaces are not favorable for the infiltration and adsorption of non-polar VOCs. To solve these problems, in this work, the monolithic composites TiO 2 /HKUST-1/RGO@melamine foam (named MRTH) with improved surface mass transfer composed of metal-organic framework (HKUST-1), graphene oxide (GO) and electrospun TiO 2 nanofibers was designed. The metal-organic framework HKUST-1 plays a role in promoting the adsorption of toluene, while the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) facilitates the infiltration of non-polar molecules on the surface of the composite and has better electron transport capability. A type II heterojunction between the electrospun TiO 2 nanofibers and HKUST-1 formed in the monolithic composites suppresses the recombination of electron-hole pairs and extends their lifespan. Comparing with the bare electrospun TiO 2 nanofibers, the MRTH foam composites exhibit a wider light absorption range, hydrophilic and oleophobic properties and a higher separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. In 90 min of dark adsorption, the removal rate of toluene over MRTH-8 was 52.32 %, while under irradiation by xenon lamp for 150 min, the removal rate over MRTH-8 reached 90.15 %. The amount of monolithic foam composites can also be easily adjusted in the reactor to achieve the best possible removal of the contaminant. The prepared composite materials have been characterized in detail, and the possible mechanisms have also been discussed. The foam composites prepared in this work have high catalytic activity and gas-solid reaction mass transfer efficiency, so they have wide practical application prospects in the field of VOCs abatement.

Oxygen-vacancy-assisted construction of Ce–TiO2 aerogel for efficiently boosting photocatalytic CO2 reduction without any sacrifice agent

Abstract:The development of efficient photocatalysts with high activity and high selectivity remains the biggest challenge limiting the development of photocatalysis. Herein, a novel Ce-doped TiO2 aerogel (Ce–TiO2) is synthesized via a simple one-step sol-gel technique, which integrates simultaneously supercritical drying, heat treatment, nano structuring, and self-diffusion for the formation of the Ce embedded in porous TiO2 matrix with strong coupling. The Ce–TiO2 aerogel exhibits typically homogeneous structures, and the resulting Ce–TiO2 aerogel shows an extremely large BET specific surface area of 246.53 m2/g, which is responsible for the much-enhanced photocatalytic active sites. The incorporation of Ce has induced an impurity level in the band gap of the pristine TiO2 aerogel, extending the light response range to the visible region. Meanwhile, the structural and compositional advantages are exploited to achieve fast separation and transfer of charge carriers. The yields of CH4 and CO are 0.6 and 2.1 μmol/(g·h) under visible light without any additional co-catalysts or sacrificial agents, which are 1.4 and 15.6 times as high as those of pristine TiO2 aerogel. In addition, the yields of CH4 and CO are as high as 10.3 and 26.9 μmol/(g·h) under simulated solar spectrum conditions, which are 34.3 and 1.6 times as high as those of pristine TiO2 aerogel. The density function theory (DFT) calculation confirms that the resulting Ce–TiO2 aerogel enables efficient H2O and CO2 adsorption and activation through the Ce cooperation and O vacancy, which greatly improves photocatalytic CO2 reduction. This work reveals the development of aerogel photocatalyst for the photoreduction of CO2 with H2O and CO2 as feedstock.

Abstract:Abstract Photocatalysis is a new type of renewable energy technology used in environmental treatment and hydrogen energy production. In this regard, a new class of photocatalysts, TiO2 aerogels, are attractive for having the chemical characteristics of TiO2 nanomaterials such as high catalytic activity, good stability, non-toxic, and non-polluting, and the structural characteristics of aerogels such as large specific surface area, high porosity, the 3-dimensional interconnected network structure composed of relatively uniform nanoparticles, and high light transmittance. Here we review the recent progress in TiO2 aerogels for photocatalysis, focusing on preparation techniques, the crystalline phases’ influence on photocatalytic properties, the modification of photocatalytic properties, and the analysis and discussion of future development. In particular, we first summarize various preparation techniques, including sol–gel method, nanoparticles self-assembly synthesis, and high-temperature aerosol technique, then detail the structure and composition of TiO2 crystalline phases that affect the photocatalytic properties. Subsequently, we discuss strategies to further enhance the photocatalytic properties of TiO2 aerogels by the composite of SiO2 aerogel semiconductors, the doping of metal dopants, and the doping or composite of non-metallic substances, and elaborate the modification mechanism and the modification effect achieved. Finally, combined with the research status of TiO2 aerogels and the development experience of other aerogels, we conduct a reasonable analysis and discussion on their further research directions and industrialization roads.
Modulating Charge Separation of Ce-TiO2 Aerogel Supported on Chitosan Derived Ordered Porous Carbonaceous Frameworks for Promoting CO2 Photoreduction Activity

Abstract:Developing efficient photocatalysts with low cost, high performance, and high selectivity is essential and imperative for CO2 conversion and utilization, yet it remains a big challenge. Herein, a novel Ce-doped TiO2 aerogel with oxygen vacancy anchored on the oriented carbonaceous (Ce-TiO2@CS) is synthesized by the sol-gel technique, combined with the freeze casting, supercritical drying technique, and heat treatment processes. The Ce-TiO2@CS aerogel has a typical aerogel-like structure, with the Ce-TiO2 aerogel anchored on the oriented porous carbon, rendering a large BET-specific surface area of 124 m2/g, which leads to enhanced photocatalytic activity. The Ce-doping into the pristine TiO2 results in impurity levels within the band gap, which extends the light response range to the visible light region. In addition, the rapid combination of electrons and holes is prevented via the two-phase microstructures and rapid transfer rate of electrons within the oriented porous carbon. The yields of CH4 and CO are as high as 9.45 μmol h-1 g-1 and 42.26 μmol h-1 g-1, respectively, which are 28.6 and 2.46 times higher than those of pristine TiO2 aerogel under simulated solar spectrum conditions without any sacrificial agents or co-catalysts, The density functional theory (DFT) calculation shows that larger C-O bonds of CO2 molecule and more negative adsorption energy have occurred on the Ce-TiO2@CS aerogel, indicating that the CO2 activation has been enhanced, which greatly improves the CO2 photoreduction activity. This work may guide the designing of aerogel-based photocatalysts for CO2 photocatalytic reduction.
Decorating {0 0 1} TiO 2 nanosheets on hydrophobic NaY zeolite: An efficient deactivation-resistant photocatalyst for gaseous toluene removal

Abstract:Photocatalysis is regarded as a promising in situ air purification technology for the removal of volatile organic compounds. However, the deactivation of photocatalysts remains a serious issue that needs to be addressed. Herein, we report a novel dual-functional photocatalyst (TiO 2 @HYZ) with spatially separated catalytic sites and adsorption sites, which has been obtained by combining hydrophilic {0 0 1} TiO 2 nanosheets with hydrophobic NaY zeolite. TiO 2 @HYZ showed excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of gaseous toluene under UV irradiation in humid air. The optimized TiO 2 @HYZ-2 (containing 45.7 wt% TiO 2 ) achieved 96.6% toluene removal and 87.4% mineralization within 120 min. The specific reaction rate constant of TiO 2 @HYZ-2, pristine TiO 2 and P25 normalized by the unit amount of TiO 2 during the photocatalytic degradation process were calculated to be 0.481, 0.230 and 0.250 min −1 g −1 , respectively. Moreover, TiO 2 @HYZ-2 showed superior durability, maintaining stable performance over repeated toluene degradation processes, even at high toluene concentration, whereas pristine TiO 2 incurred severe deactivation with increasing number of photocatalysis cycles. The significantly enhanced activity and anti-deactivation property was attributed to a synergistic effect between HYZ and TiO 2 in the catalyst structure, which strengthened the adsorption of toluene on HYZ and facilitated effective separation of photoexcited charge carriers on TiO 2 , thus avoiding the deposition of degradation intermediates on the active sites and simultaneously improving mineralization. This work provided a new perspective for the design of efficient and deactivation-resistant photocatalysts for air pollution remediation.

Robust Photocatalytic Performance of Tio2/Bi2wo6 Photocatalysts with Trace Fe Dopant for Gaseous Toluene Decomposition

Abstract:As one of the typical volatile organic compounds, toluene is harmful to human health and challenging to decompose effectively with traditional photocatalysts, such as TiO 2 or ZnO. Here, a trace Fe doped TiO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 composite photocatalyst with abundant oxygen vacancies was successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal method and subsequently impregnation treatment. Fe doped TiO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 were optimized by adjusting the molar ration of TiO 2 and Bi 2 WO 6 . The obtained Fe (0.1) -TB 2 with only 0.1wt% Fe dopant exhibited superior photocatalytic activity with over 90% toluene removal efficiency after 180 min under visible light irradiation. A series of characterizations reveal that the improved photocatalytic activity of Fe doped TiO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 can be attributed to synergistic effects between the extension of photogenerated carrier lifetime, the increase of visible light absorption range by narrowing the energy bandgap and the formation of oxygen vacancies. Furthermore, hydroxyl radicals and holes as the key reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the photodegradation reaction were confirmed by electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments. Therefore, introducing Fe-ions into TiO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalysts is an effective way to enhance the photocatalytic activities, and the modified catalysts can be considered as a promising material for decomposing toluene and other VOCs.

Abstract:The TiO2/diatomite composite was synthesized through a mild hydrolysis of titanyl sulfate. The prepared composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV-vis diffused reflectance spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that the anatase TiO2 nanopartilces anchored on the surface of diatomite with Ti-O-Si bonds between diatomite and TiO2. The photodegradation of gaseous formaldehyde under UV irradiation by the TiO2/diatomite composite was studied under various operating conditions, including relative humidity, illumination intensity and catalyst amount, which have significant influence on the degradation process. The TiO2/diatomite composite exhibited better photocatalytic activity than pure TiO2, which could be attributed to the favorable nanoparticles dispersibility and strong formaldehyde adsorption capacity. In addition, the composite exhibited outstanding reusability over five cycles. The TiO2/diatomite composite shows great promising application foreground in formaldehyde degradation. 2D N-doped graphene/CoFe MOFs heterostructure functionalized CNF aerogels impart highly efficient photocatalytic oxidation of gaseous VOCs

Abstract:Developing efficient photocatalysts for degrading volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has aroused great interest. Herein, the 3D composite aerogel catalysts (CLGM-A) with cellulose nanofibers (CNF) skeleton-supported 2D CoFe bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (2D CoFe MOFs) and 2D N-doped graphene (2D N-GE) heterostructures were prepared by freeze-drying and were successfully applied to the photocatalytic degradation of toluene. With 2D–2D (face-contact) heterojunction, the separation efficiency of photo-generated electron-hole pairs was significantly improved by the rapid transfer of electrons and inhibition of electron backflow on the N-GE/2D CoFe MOFs (GM) during the photocatalytic process. As a result, the CLGM-A achieved 95.4% toluene removal in 120 minutes, 83.6% mineralization efficiency, and demonstrated good stability and reusability in continuous cycle tests. Radical analysis suggested that •O2 - was the main active species produced in the CLGM-A system, which could realize the efficient degradation of volatile organic pollutants at room temperature.

Optimizing Nanoscale TiO2 for adsorption-enhanced photocatalytic degradation of low-concentration air pollutants

Abstract:Adsorption and photodegradation are key steps in environmental air purification. Micropores have been introduced into anatase TiO2 nanocatalysts to enhance the adsorption of pollutant molecules onto the photocatalyst surface, which increases the use of the photoinduced electron-hole pairs. Three nanocomposites have been synthesized with dodecylamine as a pore-forming agent under mild hydrothermal conditions and at varying temperature of preparation. Samples synthesized at 100, 115, and 130 degrees C, labeled TiO2-100, TiO2-115, and TiO2-130, respectively, provided insights into the effect of crystallinity and micropore area on the removal efficiency of gas-phase organic pollutants. Of the three, TiO2-100 had the largest micropore area (493m(2)g(-1)) but amorphous phase. TiO2-130 had anatase phase but only mesopores, whereas TiO2-115 had both a relatively large micropore area (258m(2)g(-1)) and an anatase crystal structure. Toluene was chosen as a model air pollutant. Experiments were performed in a single-pass reactor in the presence of UV irradiation under various experimental conditions, such as varying partial pressures of toluene, contact times, and relative humidities of the mobile gas phase, to approximate realistic conditions for this air purification system. Of the three prototype catalysts, TiO2-115 showed the highest removal and mineralization efficiencies owing to the optimized availability of photogenerated holes and adsorbed toluene. The key parameters for optimized photocatalysis of low-concentration air pollutants are the micropore area and the crystallinity of the photocatalyst.
Preparation of Monolithic Tio2 Aerogel Via Ambient Drying and Photocatalytic Degradation of Oily Wastewater

Abstract:The monolithic TiO2 aerogel was sucessfully synthesized at ambient pressure through Sol-Gel technique with TBT as the raw material and its photocatalyst property for degradation of the aqueous emulsion of crude oil in the Bohai Sea was investigated. During the ambient drying process, aging liquor and pinhole drying technology were found to be critical to the properties of TiO2, aerogels. It was shown that the pinhole drying was favorable in reducing the asymmetric stress on the framework of TiO2 gel in the drying process and the TEOS-Ethanol or TBT-Ethanol solution as the aging liquor for TiO2 wet-gel could enhance the strength of TiO2 gel skeleton. Combining these effects, the cracking problem of TiO2 alcohol gel in the drying could be solved and the high-performance TiO2 aerogel monolith was eventually achieved. The most integrated TiO2 aerogel block exhibited low density (0.184 g/cm(3)) and high specific surface area (389.5 m(2)/g). By calcinations at high temperature, the TiO2 aerogels changed from amorphous to anatase structure. The photocatalytic properties of the heat-treated TiO2 aerogels were investigated via the degradation experiment for the aqueous emulsion of crude oil in the Bohai Sea. The results of photocatalytic experiments showed that the catalytic degradation rate was up to 91% with the addition of TiO2 aerogel of 400 mg/L.
Accelerating the Photocatalytic Degradation of Toluene by Unidirectional Electron Transfer Via FRET Strategy

Abstract:Humanity's need for clean air has stimulated their research interest in the remediation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). As an environmentally friendly pollution control technology, photocatalysis can easily generate oxidative free radicals for the mineralization of VOCs. Herein, we report a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET)-inspired Ag/SrSO4/TiO2 photocatalyst with 2.5-fold higher activity for toluene degradation than pristine TiO2. The study of the catalyst reaction mechanism shows that the interlayer SrSO4 between the plasmonic Ag and the photocatalyst TiO2 is the key factor to guide the unidirectional transfer of electrons. A proper thickness of the insulator interlayer (whether SrSO4 or BaSO4) can reduce the recombination efficiency of photo-generated electrons and holes, resulting in an excellent toluene degradation ability. This finding demonstrates the excellent versatility of the catalyst system, which provides a novel direction for the modification of typical photocatalysts.
Titania and Pt/titania aerogels as superior mesoporous structures for photocatalytic water splitting

Abstract:The highly porous, three-dimensionally well-connected through-pore structure of TiO2 aerogels is proven a superior material form for applications in photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production. At the reaction temperature of 30 °C, the specific hydrogen evolution rate achieved by the TiO2 aerogel is 3.40 and 9.63 times those obtained by hydrothermally prepared TiO2 nanocrystals and commercial P25 TiO2 nanoparticles, respectively. Decoration of Pt nanocrystals onto the backbone of the TiO2 aerogel leads to a one-order of magnitude improvement in hydrogen evolution rate over the plain TiO2 aerogel. Two methods are developed for the Pt decoration: a polyol process and an immersion-calcination-reduction process. The latter produces smaller sized Pt nanocrystals of around 1.9 nm, versus 4.7 nm from the polyol process, and achieves the same level of maximum specific hydrogen evolution rates as the polyol process at only a 1/10 Pt loading.
Novel modified nonalkoxide sol–gel synthesis of multiphase high surface area TiO2 aerogels for photocatalysis

Abstract:Multiphase TiO2 aerogels were synthesized through a simple, environment friendly sol–gel route. TiCl3 was used as nonalkoxide precursor with ethanol as solvent. The formed alcogels were converted into aerogels by CO2 supercritical drying. The results revealed that the increase in TiCl3 concentration leads to the decay of the gelation time, possibly due to the availability of Ti+4 ions in the medium that led to the formation of the interconnected gel network more easily. The aerogels produced from 0.75 M TiCl3 and calcined at 450 °C exhibited the three main crystalline phases of titania (anatase, brookite, and rutile) and a specific surface area of 124 m2/g. Through transmission electron microscopy, it was possible to visualize the morphology of the nanostructured aerogels, comprised of a network of nanoparticles with sizes between 5 and 15 nm. The combination of high specific surface area, particle size in nanometer scale, and crystallinity of the material allowed greater photocatalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol compared with commercial Degussa P-25.

Abstract:In recent years, TiO2-graphene composites of various forms have attracted considerable attention as high-performance photocatalysts because of their desirable attributes including high adsorptivity of pollutants, extended light absorption range, and efficient charge separation. However, TiO2-graphene powders prepared via the classic hydrothermal method is faced with the obstacle of heavy agglomeration between graphene layers, which can cause a huge loss in adsorption and reaction sites. To improve this, we have employed graphene aerogel, which was synthesized via thermal reduction of graphene oxide (GO) aerogel, as an auxiliary material for TiO2. Herein, a highly porous TiO2-reduced graphene oxide (RGO) aerogel with high specific volume and enlarged specific surface area was presented, exhibiting considerably higher adsorption rate and capacity as well as improved photocatalytic efficiency, compared with classic hydrothermal-synthesized TiO2-graphene powders. The TiO2-RGO aerogels also showed high visible light absorption, endowing it with higher utilization of sunlight. This work presents a new approach for the synthesis of high-performance TiO2-graphene photocatalyst, and also provides a general graphene aerogel-based strategy for the improvement of various other photocatalysts.
Photocatalytic activity of epoxide sol–gel derived titania transformed into nanocrystalline aerogel powders by supercritical drying

Abstract:Nanocrystalline aerogel TiO2 photocatalysts prepared by a facile epoxide sol–gel synthesis followed by subsequent supercritical drying and thermal processing were studied in regard to their performance in the photocatalytic degradation of phenol. Xerogel TiO2 catalysts obtained by direct drying were also examined. A variety of techniques including N2 adsorption, XRD, DRIFTS, TEM, and DR UV–vis were employed to characterize the microstructural and surface properties of the as-obtained aerogel and xerogel TiO2 samples. It is shown that the aerogel samples showed particular advantage in controlling the microstructural properties in terms of crystallite size, surface area, crystallinity as well as anatase and rutile phase composition, which are responsible for the high activity of these photocatalysts. The aerogel sample obtained by calcination at 650°C afforded the highest specific activity for photodegradation of phenol, which is also found to be far superior to that of the commercial photocatalyst Degussa P-25.
Photocatalytic Degradation of Gaseous Toluene on Fe-TiO2 under Visible Light Irradiation: A Study on the Structure, Activity and Deactivation Mechanism

Abstract:The Fe-TiO2 photocatalysts synthesized by a sol–gel method have the mesoporous structure with a narrow pore size distribution, large pore volume and high surface area. The incorporated Fe3+ substitutes the octahedrally coordinated Ti4+ in the TiO2 lattice to extend the absorption of TiO2 to visible light region and promote the formation of electron–hole pair. Additionally, the separation and transportation efficiency increase with the doping of Fe3+ increasing from 0.1% to 0.7%, while decreases remarkably with the doping concentration increasing from 0.7% to 1.5%. The Fe-TiO2 shows excellent photocatalytic performance for toluene degradation under visible light irradiation. The optimal Fe/Ti ratio is 0.7%. Partial deactivation of the photocatalytic activity was observed after 20 consecutive reaction runs. From the in situ DRIFTS experiment, the deactivation reason can be attributed to the formation of stable intermediates, such as benzaldehyde and benzoic acid, which occupied the active sites on the surface of the photocatalyst. The adsorbed benzaldehyde and benzoic acid can be removed with heat treatment at 653K for 3h and the deactivated photocatalyst can be regenerated completely.

Abstract:The novel photocatalytic advanced oxidation catalyst, ZIF-67@MXene-TA-CNF (ZIF-67@MTC) aerogels, was prepared via introducing tannic acid-coated cellulose nanofibril (TA-CNF), two-dimensional layered MXene, and ZIF-67 into a composite aerogel network. Specially, TA assisted the crosslinking of CNF through hydrogen bonds to construct the flexible aerogel skeleton, accompanied by assembly of MXene and ZIF-67. MXene not only provided sufficient attachment sites for the anchoring of ZIF-67, but also can be used as a repository for electron transfer to facilitate the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. In the peroxymonosulfate (PMS)/aerogels/visible light system, the SO4-, OH and 1O2 were generated, and 1O2 was the main reactive species. As a result, 99.9 % of Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) can be degraded and the total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency reached 81.8 % within 40 min in this system. The results might provide a new concept for the design of biomass aerogels for applications in organic pollutant removal.

Abstract:This paper reports on the degradation of gaseous toluene by the photocatalytic oxidation process. The photocatalyst, TiO2 film, was prepared by the sol-gel method and was coated on porous nickel. The photocatalytic decomposition of toluene was carried out in a recirculating batch reactor. The factors that affect toluene decomposition were studied, including particle size of the catalyst, initial toluene concentration, flow rate of toluene in the reactor, relative humidity and reactive temperature. In addition, deactivation of the catalyst is also discussed. The experiment results showed that toluene can be decomposed effectively by the photocatalytic oxidation process, and that toluene degradation obeys the first-order reaction.

Abstract:TiO 2 /SiO 2 composite aerogel was prepared by sol–gel method with atmospheric pressure drying. However, the aerogel suffered from poor structural strength, and in most cases, they lost their shape under thermal stress. Herein, a novel strategy that improved the structure chunkiness and photocatalytic activity of aerogel was proposed. The formation process of sepiolite fiber-reinforced TiO 2 /SiO 2 composite aerogel explored effect of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as a "template" on the physicochemical properties of aerogel and the toughened mechanism of sepiolite fiber in gel network. The synergistic effect of CTAB, sepiolite fiber and TiO 2 /SiO 2 composite aerogel is conducive to optimizing the structure of aerogel and improving the photocatalytic degradation efficiency. The results showed that sepiolite fiber-reinforced TiO 2 /SiO 2 composite aerogel not only had good chunk formation, but also enhanced the photocatalytic activity of rhodamine B (Rh B) solution by three times under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation.

Abstract:The synergistic effect of adsorption and photothermal can be used to develop new efficient pollutant treatment technologies. Here, porous covalent triazine frameworks modified 2 O 4 catalyst (PCTF-CCM) was constructed and applied to the full spectrum driven photothermal degradation of toluene. Toluene conversion and CO 2 yield over PCTF-CCM under simulated solar irradiation (optical power density=350 mW cm -2 ) could be reached 100% and 98% with 40 minutes. Oxygen vacancies play an important role in thermal and photothermal catalysis by enhancing the adsorption of pollutant gases and the mobility of oxygen. The porous covalent triazine frameworks enriched the concentration of pollutants on the surface of catalyst and significantly improved the water resistant capability, leading to the performance of photothermal catalytic oxidation of toluene highly improved. The designed system extends the range and service life of catalyst in practical applications and provides a new idea for the design of adsorption-photothermal catalyst.
