Abstract:We present a new fragment of axiomatic set theory for pure sets and for the iteration of power sets within given transitive sets. It turns out that this formal system admits an interesting hierarchy of models with true membership relation and with only finite or countably infinite ordinals. Still a considerable part of mathematics can be formalized within this system.

Abstract:In the several contexts such as combinatorial number theory, families of sets of positive integers closed under taking subsets have been investigated. %To investigate some property of an infinite set of positive integers, Then it is sometimes useful to give bijections between the set of the one-sided infinite sequences on the alphabet set $\{0,1\}$ and such a family of sets. The most typical example is the family of sum-free sets. Although such a kind of families covers a large class of families of sets, there are only a few considerations on bijections for the case where the sum-free property is replaced by another property. In this paper, we explicitly give a bijection and its inverse between the set of one-sided infinite sequences on the alphabet set $\{0,1\}$ and a family of sets which may be contained in a class of families closed under taking subsets. Moreover, we show that some extremal property in a particular family of sets is characterized by a discrete dynamical system based on this kind of bijections.

Abstract:We define a natural equivalence relation on collections of cards from the card game SET, and enumerate some of the equivalence classes, vastly generalizing the standard game. On this basis, we describe several alternative games for the SET deck, including the game of STUN, in which the goal is to find three cards with exactly two values in each attribute.

Abstract:The theory of finitely supported algebraic structures represents a reformulation of Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory in which every construction is finitely supported according to the action of a group of permutations of some basic elements named atoms. In this paper we study the properties of finitely supported sets that contain infinite uniformly supported subsets, as well as the properties of finitely supported sets that do not contain infinite uniformly supported subsets. For classical atomic sets, we study whether they contain or not infinite uniformly supported subsets.

Abstract:We study an abstract notion of tree structure which lies at the common core of various tree-like discrete structures commonly used in combinatorics: trees in graphs, order trees, nested subsets of a set, tree-decompositions of graphs and matroids etc. Unlike graph-theoretical or order trees, these _tree sets_ can provide a suitable formalization of tree structure also for infinite graphs, matroids, and set partitions. Order trees reappear as oriented tree sets. We show how each of the above structures defines a tree set, and which additional information, if any, is needed to reconstruct it from this tree set.

Constructive semigroups with apartness -- a state of the art

Abstract:This chapter aims to provide a clear and understandable picture of constructive semigroups with apartness in Bishop's style of constructive mathematics, BISH. Our theory is partly inspired by the classical case, but it is distinguished from it in two significant aspects: we use intuitionistic logic rather than classical throughout; our work is based on the notion of apartness (between elements of the set, and, later, between elements and its subsets). Following Heyting, at least initially, classical semigroup theory is seen as a guide that helps us to develop the constructive theory of semigroups with apartness. To have a structure, we need a set, a relation, and rules establishing how we will put them together. Working within classical or intuitionistic logic, in order to analyze algebraic structures, it is necessary to start with study on sets and ordered sets, relational systems, etc. A comparative analysis between presented classical and constructive results is also a part of this chapter. All proofs can be found in the Appendix.

Abstract:We present an abstract framework for asymptotic analysis of convergence based on the notions of eventual families of sets that we define. A family of subsets of a given set is called here an "eventual family" if it is upper hereditary with respect to inclusion. We define accumulation points of eventual families in a Hausdorff Topological space and define the "image family" of an eventual family. Focusing on eventual families in the set of the integers enables us to talk about sequences of points. We expand our work to the notion of a "multiset" which is a modification of the concept of a set that allows for multiple instances of its elements and enable the development of "multifamilies" which are either "increasing" or "decreasing". The abstract structure created here is motivated by, and feeds back to, our look at the convergence analysis of an iterative process for asymptotically finding a common fixed point of a family of operators.

Abstract:Bishop's measure theory (BMT) is an abstraction of the measure theory of a locally compact metric space $X$, and the use of an informal notion of a set-indexed family of complemented subsets is crucial to its predicative character. The more general Bishop-Cheng measure theory (BCMT) is a constructive version of the classical Daniell approach to measure and integration, and highly impredicative, as many of its fundamental notions, such as the integration space of $p$-integrable functions $L^p$, rely on quantification over proper classes (from the constructive point of view). In this paper we introduce the notions of a pre-measure and pre-integration space, a predicative variation of the Bishop-Cheng notion of a measure space and of an integration space, respectively. Working within Bishop Set Theory (BST), and using the theory of set-indexed families of complemented subsets and set-indexed families of real-valued partial functions within BST, we apply the implicit, predicative spirit of BMT to BCMT. As a first example, we present the pre-measure space of complemented detachable subsets of a set $X$ with the Dirac-measure, concentrated at a single point. Furthermore, we translate in our predicative framework the non-trivial, Bishop-Cheng construction of an integration space from a given measure space, showing that a pre-measure space induces the pre-integration space of simple functions associated to it. Finally, a predicative construction of the canonically integrable functions $L^1$, as the completion of an integration space, is included.

Abstract:Given an initial family of sets, we may take unions, intersections and complements of the sets contained in this family in order to form a new collection of sets; our construction process is done recursively until we obtain the last family. Problems encountered in this research include the minimum number of steps required to arrive to the last family as well as a characterization of that last family; we solve all those problems. We also define a class of simple families ($n$-minimal constructible) and we analyze the relationships between partitions and separability (our new concept) that lead to interesting results such as finding families based on partitions that generate finite algebras. We prove a number of new results about $n$-minimal constructible families; one major result is that every finite algebra of sets has a generating family which is $n$-minimal constructible for all natural $n$ and we compute the minimum number of steps required to generate an algebra. Another interesting result is a connection between this construction process and Baire's Theorem. This work has a number of possible applications, particularly in the fields of economics and computer science.

Abstract:A family $\mathcal{A}$ of sets is said to be \emph{$t$-intersecting} if any two sets in $\mathcal{A}$ have at least $t$ common elements. A central problem in extremal set theory is to determine the size or structure of a largest $t$-intersecting sub-family of a given family $\mathcal{F}$. We give a survey of known results, conjectures and open problems for various important families $\mathcal{F}$, namely, power sets, levels of power sets, hereditary families, families of signed sets, families of labeled sets, and families of permutations. We also provide some extensions and consequences of known results.

Abstract:We introduce the theory of biset functors defined on finite categories. Previously, biset functors have been defined on groups, and in that context they are closely related to Mackey functors. Standard examples on groups include representation rings, the Burnside ring and group cohomology. The new theory allows these same examples, but defined for arbitrary finite categories, thus including, for instance, the representation rings of finite EI categories, among which are posets, and the free categories associated to quivers without oriented cycles. Group homology with trivial coefficients is replaced by the homology of the category with constant coefficients and this is a biset functor when bisets that are representable on one side are used. We give a definition of the Burnside ring of an arbitrary finite category. It is a biset functor that plays a key role throughout the theory. We discuss properties of the simple biset functors on categories, including their parametrization and calculation. We describe the symmetric monoidal structure on biset functors, Green biset functors and an approach to fibered biset functors for categories, together with the technicalities these entail. Various examples are given, the most elaborate showing a connection between the correspondence functors of Bouc and Thévenaz and biset functors on Boolean lattices.

Abstract:The theory of finitely supported algebraic structures is related to Pitts theory of nominal sets (by equipping finitely supported sets with finitely supported internal algebraic laws). It represents a reformulation of Zermelo Fraenkel set theory obtained by requiring every set theoretical construction to be finitely supported according to a certain action of a group of permutations of some basic elements named atoms. Its main purpose is to let us characterize infinite algebraic structures, defined involving atoms, only by analyzing their finite supports. The first goal of this paper is to define and study different kinds of infinities and the notion of `cardinality' in the framework of finitely supported structures. We present several properties of infinite cardinalities. Some of these properties are extended from the non-atomic Zermelo Fraenkel set theory into the world of atomic objects with finite support, while other properties are specific to finitely supported structures. We also compare alternative definitions of `infinite finitely supported set', and we finally provide a characterization of finitely supported countable sets.

Abstract:We consider a large family of theories of equivalence relations, each with finitely many classes, and assuming the existence of an $\omega$-Erdos cardinal, we determine which of these theories are Borel complete. We develop machinery, including {\em forbidding nested sequences} which implies a tight upper bound on Borel complexity, and {\em admitting cross-cutting absolutely indiscernible sets} which in our context implies Borel completeness. In the Appendix we classify the reducts of theories of refining equivalence relations, possibly with infinite splitting.

Namely we prove that any field of finite transcendence degree over a prime subfield is defined by types; then we construct isotypic but not isomorphic structures with countable underlying sets: totally ordered sets, fields, and groups. This answers an old question by B. Plotkin for groups.

A generalized theory of ideals and algebraic substructures

Abstract:In 2011, a topic containing the concepts of upper and lower periodic subsets of (basic) algebraic structures was introduced and studied. The concept of ``upper periodic subsets'' can be considered as a generalized topic of ideals and sub-structures (e.g., subgroups, sub-semigroups, sub-magmas, sub-rings, etc.). Hence, it can be improved to a theory in every algebraic structure which extends many basic concepts including the ideals. This paper follows the mentioned goals and studies related to algebraic and topological aspects. For this purpose, first, we state an improved fundamental theorem about the unique direct representation of left upper periodic subsets and then introduce some extensions and generalizations. As a result of the study, we classify sub-semigroups and subgroups of real numbers and introduce some related topics and concenterable upper periodic subsets. We end the study with many research projects and some future directions of the theory.
