Abstract:We present a new fragment of axiomatic set theory for pure sets and for the iteration of power sets within given transitive sets. It turns out that this formal system admits an interesting hierarchy of models with true membership relation and with only finite or countably infinite ordinals. Still a considerable part of mathematics can be formalized within this system.

Abstract:It has long been known that (classical) Peano arithmetic is, in some strong sense, "equivalent" to the variant of (classical) Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory (including choice) in which the axiom of infinity is replaced by its negation. The intended model of the latter is the set of hereditarily finite sets. The connection between the theories is so tight that they may be taken as notational variants of each other. Our purpose here is to develop and establish a constructive version of this. We present an intuitionistic theory of the hereditarily finite sets, and show that it is definitionally equivalent to Heyting Arithmetic HA , in a sense to be made precise. Our main target theory, the intuitionistic small set theory SST is remarkably simple, and intuitive. It has just one non-logical primitive, for membership, and three straightforward axioms plus one axiom scheme. We locate our theory within intuitionistic mathematics generally.

Abstract:Motivated by problems involving end extensions of models of set theory, we develop the rudiments of the power admissible cover construction (over ill-founded models of set theory), an extension of the machinery of admissible covers invented by Barwise as a versatile tool for generalizing model-theoretic results about countable well-founded models of set theory to countable ill-founded ones. Our development of the power admissible machinery allows us to obtain new results concerning powerset-preserving end extensions and rank extensions of countable models of subsystems of $\mathsf{ZFC}$. The canonical extension $\mathsf{KP}^\mathcal{P}$ of Kripke-Platek set theory $\mathsf{KP}$ plays a key role in our work; one of our results refines a theorem of Rathjen by showing that $\Sigma_1^\mathcal{P}\text{-}\mathsf{Foundation}$ is provable in $\mathsf{KP}^\mathcal{P}$ (without invoking the axiom of choice).

Abstract:This paper provides a complete suite of axioms for a version of set theory that I call Explication. Explication borrows from the two most prominent existing systems of set theory. Explication starts with class variables. After several steps, some of these class variables are identified as sets. The most crucial step is to identify classes which can explicitly say, in a finite statement, which other classes are its members. The reader is cautioned that the suite of axioms presented is a complete treatment of Explication. Statements which may or may not be true in other axiom systems are not significant.

Abstract:In this paper we study admissible extensions of several theories T of reverse mathematics. The idea is that in such an extension the structure M=(N,S,∈) of the natural numbers and collection of sets of natural numbers S has to obey the axioms of T while simultaneously one also has a set-theoretic world with transfinite levels erected on top of M governed by the axioms of Kripke-Platek set theory, KP . In some respects, the admissible extension of T can be viewed as a proof-theoretic analog of Barwise's admissible cover of an arbitrary model of set theory; see [2] . However, by contrast, the admissible extension of T is usually not a conservative extension of T . Owing to the interplay of T and KP , either theory's axioms may force new sets of natural to exists which in turn may engender yet new sets of naturals on account of the axioms of the other. The paper discerns a general pattern though. It turns out that for many familiar theories T , the second order part of the admissible cover of T equates to T augmented by transfinite induction over all initial segments of the Bachmann-Howard ordinal. Technically, the paper uses a novel type of ordinal analysis, expanding that for KP to the higher set-theoretic universe while at the same time treating the world of subsets of N as an unanalyzed class-sized urelement structure. Among the systems of reverse mathematics, for which we determine the admissible extension, are Π11-CA0 and ATR0 as well as the theory of bar induction, BI .

Abstract:We study Medvedev reducibility in the context of set theory — specifically, forcing and large cardinal hypotheses. Answering a question of Hamkins and Li [HL∞] , we show that the Medvedev degrees of countable ordinals are far from linearly ordered in multiple ways, our main result here being that there is a club of ordinals which is an antichain with respect to Medvedev reducibility. We then generalize these results to arbitrary "reasonably-definable" reducibilities, under appropriate set-theoretic hypotheses.We then turn from ordinals to general structures. We show that some of the results above yield characterizations of counterexamples to Vaught's conjecture; another applies to all situations, assigning an ordinal to any reasonable class of structures and "measure" on that class. We end by discussing some directions for future research.

Partially-elementary end extensions of countable models of set theory

Abstract:Let $\mathsf{KP}$ denote Kripke-Platek Set Theory and let $\mathsf{M}$ be the weak set theory obtained from $\mathsf{ZF}$ by removing the collection scheme, restricting separation to $\Delta_0$-formulae and adding an axiom asserting that every set is contained in a transitive set ($\mathsf{TCo}$). A result due to Kaufmann shows that every countable model, $\mathcal{M}$, of $\mathsf{KP}+\Pi_n\textsf{-Collection}$ has a proper $\Sigma_{n+1}$-elementary end extension. Here we show that there are limits to the amount of the theory of $\mathcal{M}$ that can be transferred to the end extensions that are guaranteed by Kaufmann's Theorem. Using admissible covers and the Barwise Compactness Theorem, we show that if $\mathcal{M}$ is a countable model $\mathsf{KP}+\Pi_n\textsf{-Collection}+\Sigma_{n+1}\textsf{-Foundation}$ and $T$ is a recursive theory that holds in $\mathcal{M}$, then there exists a proper $\Sigma_n$-elementary end extension of $\mathcal{M}$ that satisfies $T$. We use this result to show that the theory $\mathsf{M}+\Pi_n\textsf{-Collection}+\Pi_{n+1}\textsf{-Foundation}$ proves $\Sigma_{n+1}\textsf{-Separation}$.

Abstract:We identify a notion of reducibility between predicates, called instance reducibility, which commonly appears in reverse constructive mathematics. The notion can be generally used to compare and classify various principles studied in reverse constructive mathematics (formal Church's thesis, Brouwer's Continuity principle and Fan theorem, Excluded middle, Limited principle, Function choice, Markov's principle, etc.). We show that the instance degrees form a frame, i.e., a complete lattice in which finite infima distribute over set-indexed suprema. They turn out to be equivalent to the frame of upper sets of truth values, ordered by the reverse Smyth partial order. We study the overall structure of the lattice: the subobject classifier embeds into the lattice in two different ways, one monotone and the other antimonotone, and the $\lnot\lnot$-dense degrees coincide with those that are reducible to the degree of Excluded middle. We give an explicit formulation of instance degrees in a relative realizability topos, and call these extended Weihrauch degrees, because in Kleene-Vesley realizability the $\lnot\lnot$-dense modest instance degrees correspond precisely to Weihrauch degrees. The extended degrees improve the structure of Weihrauch degrees by equipping them with computable infima and suprema, an implication, the ability to control access to parameters and computation of results, and by generally widening the scope of Weihrauch reducibility.

Abstract:Our main result (Theorem A) shows the incompleteness of any consistent sequential theory T T formulated in a finite language such that T T is axiomatized by a collection of sentences of bounded quantifier-alternation-depth. Our proof employs an appropriate reduction mechanism to rule out the possibility of completeness by simply invoking Tarski's Undefinability of Truth theorem. We also use the proof strategy of Theorem A to obtain other incompleteness results.

Abstract:We investigate the mathematics of a model of the human mind which has been proposed by the psychologist Jens Mammen. Mathematical realizations of this model consist of so-called \emph{Mammen spaces}, where a Mammen space is a triple $(U,\mathcal S,\mathcal C)$, where $U$ is a non-empty set ("the universe"), $\mathcal S$ is a perfect Hausdorff topology on $U$, and $\mathcal C\subseteq\mathcal P(U)$ together with $\mathcal S$ satisfy certain axioms. We refute a conjecture put forward by J. Hoffmann-Jørgensen, who conjectured that the existence of a "complete" Mammen space implies the Axiom of Choice, by showing that in the first Cohen model, in which ZF holds but AC fails, there is a complete Mammen space. We obtain this by proving that in the first Cohen model, every perfect topology can be extended to a maximal perfect topology. On the other hand, we also show that if all sets are Lebesgue measurable, or all sets are Baire measurable, then there are no complete Mammen spaces with a countable universe. Finally, we investigate two new cardinal invariants $\mathfrak u_M$ and $\mathfrak u_T$ associated with complete Mammen spaces and maximal perfect topologies, and establish some basic inequalities that are provable in ZFC. We show $\mathfrak u_M=\mathfrak u_T=2^{\aleph_0}$ follows from Martin's Axiom, and, contrastingly, we show that $\aleph_1=\mathfrak u_M=\mathfrak u_T<2^{\aleph_0}=\aleph_2$ in the Baumgartner-Laver model.

Some simple theories from a Boolean algebra point of view

Abstract:We find a strong separation between two natural families of simple rank one theories in Keisler's order: the theories $T_\mathfrak{m}$ reflecting graph sequences, which witness that Keisler's order has the maximum number of classes, and the theories $T_{n,k}$, which are the higher-order analogues of the triangle-free random graph. The proof involves building Boolean algebras and ultrafilters "by hand" to satisfy certain model theoretically meaningful chain conditions. This may be seen as advancing a line of work going back through Kunen's construction of good ultrafilters in ZFC using families of independent functions. We conclude with a theorem on flexible ultrafilters, and open questions.

The goal is to provide the basic facts used for applications of descriptive set theory to other areas of mathematics, particularly analysis and dynamical systems. The only topological or set theoretic background required is covered in undergraduate courses. It covers the hierarchy of Borel sets and the analytic sets, trees, Suslin's operation A, reductions, norms, separation theorems and uniformization.

Abstract:We present a two-level theory to formalize constructive mathematics as advocated in a previous paper with G. Sambin. One level is given by an intensional type theory, called Minimal type theory. This theory extends the set-theoretic version introduced in the mentioned paper with collections. The other level is given by an extensional set theory which is interpreted in the first one by means of a quotient model. This two-level theory has two main features: it is minimal among the most relevant foundations for constructive mathematics; it is constructive thanks to the way the extensional level is linked to the intensional one which fulfills the "proofs-as-programs" paradigm and acts as a programming language.

Abstract:Mathematicians manipulate sets with confidence almost every day, rarely making mistakes. Few of us, however, could accurately quote what are often referred to as "the" axioms of set theory. This suggests that we all carry around with us, perhaps subconsciously, a reliable body of operating principles for manipulating sets. What if we were to take some of those principles and adopt them as our axioms instead? The message of this article is that this can be done, in a simple, practical way (due to Lawvere). The resulting axioms are ten thoroughly mundane statements about sets. This is an expository article for a general mathematical readership.

Abstract:It is well known that ZFC, despite its usefulness as a foundational theory for mathematics, has two unwanted features: it cannot be written down explicitly due to its infinitely many axioms, and it has a countable model due to the Löwenheim-Skolem theorem. This paper presents the axioms one has to accept to get rid of these two features. For that matter, some twenty axioms are formulated in a nonstandard first-order language with countable many constants: to this collection of axioms is associated a universe of discourse consisting of a class of objects, each of which is a set, and a class of arrows, each of which is a function. The axioms of ZF are derived from this finite axiom scheme, and it is shown that it does not have a countable model--if it has a model at all, that is. Furthermore, the axioms of category theory are proven to hold: the present universe may therefore serve as an ontological basis for category theory. However, it has not been investigated whether any of the soundness and completeness properties hold for the present theory: the inevitable conclusion is therefore that only further research can establish whether the present results indeed constitute an advancement in the foundations of mathematics.

Abstract:The concepts of a conditional set, a conditional inclusion relation and a conditional Cartesian product are introduced. The resulting conditional set theory is sufficiently rich in order to construct a conditional topology, a conditional real and functional analysis indicating the possibility of a mathematical discourse based on conditional sets. It is proved that the conditional power set is a complete Boolean algebra, and a conditional version of the axiom of choice, the ultrafilter lemma, Tychonoff's theorem, the Borel–Lebesgue theorem, the Hahn–Banach theorem, the Banach–Alaoglu theorem and the Krein–Šmulian theorem are shown.

Abstract:We describe a theory of finite sets, and investigate the analogue of Dedekind's theory of natural number systems (simply infinite systems) in this theory. Unlike the infinitary case, in our theory, natural number systems come in differing lengths and with different closure properties. We give examples of natural number systems incomparable in length; we define hierarchies of natural number systems closed under increasingly powerful functions; and we describe a method by which to construct natural number systems with given closure properties. These natural number systems form natural models for various systems of weak arithmetic.
