Abstract:Purpose: The study aimed at finding out whether parents in public primary schools in Laikipia West sub-county influence pupils to participate in academic activities. Methodology: A mixed method research design was used where cross sectional descriptive survey was used on quantitative data and phenomenology was used to complement components of qualitative data. Population of 13 public Primary schools was sampled from the total 65 public Primary Schools in the Sub-County. Out of 2,236, pupils’ in class 6, 7 and 8, 3 girls and 3 boys were selected per class through stratification and simple random method. Parents/ guardians for the selected pupils were purposively selected regardless of their age, level of education and gender. All class teachers from the sampled schools were targeted and purposively selected. The data was collected using questionnaires, interview guide, document analysis guide and focus discussion guide. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17 was used to analyze quantitative data. Nine hypotheses that sought to find out parental influence on pupils’ participation in academic activities were tested using correlation coefficient analysis. Qualitative data was transcribed, coded, and themed and interpreted in response to research questions. Results: The results from the study showed that there is prevalence of parental influence on pupil’s academic activities in Laikipia West Sub- County mainly through attending school functions, assisting with homework, communicating with teachers and their children and provision of learning resources. In response to parental involvement, pupils attended school regularly; asked questions in class, joined study groups and finished homework on time. Major restrictions to parental involvement included poverty, insecurity and illiteracy. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The recommendation was that those parents who were not actively involved on pupil’s academic related matters be sensitized on their roles of promoting child education. The County as well as national governments should support parents by establishing structures and policies that boost the standard of education in the area. According to this study such policies includes; establishing efficient and effective guidance and counseling programs in school, taking legal action on parents who keep their children at home, providing full sponsorship to needy parents and establishing boarding schools among the pastoralists communities.
Influence of Parents’ Supervision of Homework and its Influence on Academic Achievement of Pupils in Public Primary Schools

Abstract:Parents‟ supervision of their children‟s homework plays a crucial role in the implementation of a curriculum and academic achievement of pupils in public primary schools. Despite the impotence that may accrue from parental involvement in academic affairs of their children, more than 55% of parents in many countries of the world don‟t care about what their children‟s learning after school leading to poor performance of pupils in Primary schools. The purpose of the study was to assess the influence of parents‟ supervision of homework on academic achievement of pupils in public primary schools. It was based on sequential explanatory research design. It consisted of 300 teachers, 1,210 parents, 75 head teachers and 1,210 pupils drawn from 75 public primary schools. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 230 pupils while purposive sampling technique was used to select 50 parents, 23 head teachers and 90 teachers. Data was collected using; questionnaires, Interview schedules and Focused group discussion guides. The study found out that; Majority of parents don‟t assist their children with doing homework and lack of adequate supervision of homework play a negative role on the academic achievement of pupils‟ in public primary schools. The study recommended that; home set rules for homework taking should be encouraged in every home and parents should set aside special rooms for taking and writing homework for their children while doing their private studies at home.

Abstract:Parental participation in young children’s education is a fundamental right and obligation. It is a family involvement process that includes the attitudes, values and practices of parents in raising young children.Nurturing warm, and responsive parent-child relationships in Child-centered activities related to positive learning outcomes in early childhood. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of parental participation on academic performance among children in Early Childhood Development and Education Centres in Waldai Zone,Kericho County, Kenya. The objectives that guided the study included; assessing the influence of parental encouragement of their children to learn at home,on academic performance, investigating the effect of parental guidance on academic performance of ECD children, examining the influence of parental communication with the school, on children’s academic performance and establishing the effect of parental support of educational activities on children’s performance in school.The theory that underpinned this study was the Structural Functionalism Theory.The theory postulates that the human society is like an organism made up of structures known as social institutions, which are specially structured to perform various functions on behalf of the society.The study adopted a descriptive survey design and was carried out in Waldai zone, Kericho County.Purposive sampling and simple random sampling were used to select participants who comprised of a target population of 155 respondents, 35 headteachers,70 preschool teachers and 50 parents, to get the sample size of 10 headteachers, 19 preschool teachers and 13 parents. The instruments that were used in collection of data included use of questionnaires, interviews,documents analysis and observations. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data.Quantitative data was coded and analysed using the SPSS. Data was analyzed using frequencies and percentages and presented in pie charts, tables and bar graphs. The findings revealed that majority of the parents believed that the responsibility for their preschool children’s learning depended on the shared participation between them and the school. The findings also showed that there is a strong correlation between parental monitoring of school work and performance (0.7752). The study concluded that parental participation influences the academic performance among children in ECDE centres and recommends the Ministry of Education to ensure the presence of a functional Partnership between parents and teachers as an important aspect of a child’s academic and social achievement. Preschool teachers should be well trained and paid so that they have the ability and time to invite parents’ participation and the knowledge to provide parents with clear strategies for rich relationship with their children.This is done through nurturing and having warm parent-child relationship.

Abstract:The research aimed to evaluate parental influence on students' academic achievement in high school. It investigated academic performance, parental involvement, and their impact on secondary school students. Using a cross-sectional survey with 357 participants including head teachers, teachers, students, and BOG members, a self-administered questionnaire was utilized. Results indicated 80-89% score improvements in reading and writing skills, though fluency requires over 90%. Homework had 80-98% accuracy, but stronger focus was needed. Poor concentration and attendance highlighted the necessity for more support. Students struggled with question comprehension and irregular achievement. Parental engagement in health programs scored neutrally, signaling a need for increased involvement. Involvement in learning-related responsibilities was hindered by behavioral issues. Positive correlations existed between parental engagement and academic success, including safety, diversity, and regulatory aspects. Writing materials positively impacted, while reading materials showed a decline. Counseling services exhibited a weak correlation. Overall, parental involvement significantly predicted UCE students' academic improvement (B = 0.502; p = .000 < 0.05), contributing to 50.2% positive changes.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to explore the contribution of home learning to the achievement of core competencies among learners in public primary schools in Nandi County, Kenya. The study was guided by Joyce Epstein’s Model of Parental Involvement, published in 2002. The sample size comprised 293 participants, including 6 sub-county education officers, 24 head teachers, and 263 parents. Multistage sampling was used to determine the schools that would participate in the study. The research instruments used for data collection were questionnaires for parents and interview schedules for sub-county education officers and head teachers. Qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The study results showed that home learning, as a parental involvement strategy, was positively related to the achievement of core competencies among learners (r=0.348; p= 0.000 statistically). The study rejected the null hypotheses. Engaging in learning activities together at home, such as reading or homework support, appears to be an effective strategy for boosting achievement. In conclusion, engaging in learning activities together at home is an excellent way to boost achievement, offering a range of benefits beyond improved grades. Parents of pupils who demonstrate a good understanding of digital literacy support their children at home in developing technology-related skills. The study recommends that school management develop clear and concise guidelines for parents on how to effectively support home learning for problem-solving and critical thinking skills. These guidelines can include tips, suggested activities, and resources.

Abstract:The global spread of COVID-19 has caused disruptions in many aspects of our lives. Education systems worldwide have changed dramatically. Numerous countries have encouraged schools to shift to e-learning and, as a result, parental involvement in their children’s education has changed. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic upended family life around the world and with a lot for parents to navigate around. In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, countries took unprecedented steps in an effort to prevent and contain the spread of the virus. Some of these containment measures included closures of schools and childcare services, lockdown of working places, working remotely, and guidelines for physical distancing, suspension of community gatherings and recreation services including the church. It was horrifying and confusing for everybody, more so to the children and this led to the interest of the researcher. This study focused on parental influence / involvement in children’s education during the COVID-19 pandemic. The researcher was to explore the level of parental awareness of their roles in influencing academic work of their children. It was also to determine whether the demographic variable of parents has an effect on their awareness of their influence and hence their involvement in their children’s education. In addition, the study sought to examine what existing literature review had in the relation between parental awareness of their roles in academic work and involvement. An exploration of the parental awareness of their roles in academics among the low- income parents can provide valuable insight for assisting these stakeholders in academics The study was carried out in Ruiru subcounty, Kiambu county. Population for the study included 3 class teachers in primary school in class six, five and four. 30 Parents with children in class four, five and six respectively and their children. The Intensity Sampling Technique was used in this research study. Open ended and closed questionnaires were used for parents and teachers and interview guide for children. which realized Qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative method was used to gauge parental awareness of their roles and influence on academic work. The results revealed that parental educational level and employment/occupation had greater impact on parental awareness of their influence and involvement. Results indicated that most parents were not conversant with the curriculums, very few visited the schools to follow-up on their children’s performance and were not sure that their involvement influenced children’s academic work positively or negatively. The findings, suggested that parents should grow more awareness of their influence on academic work, It was also recommended that parents should take an active role in assisting their children’s education at school and at home since they are very significant in children’s academic work. Polices on education should be clear on the role of parents in academic work other than fronteering children to schools and paying tuition fees
Determinants of provision of play materials in preschool Namanga division Kajiado county

Abstract:Many governments recognize that early childhood development and education interventions are significant to the social and economic development of the country. Play materials provide children with a fairer and better start in life. Research indicates that children learn best in an environment which allows them to explore, discover, and play. As children play, they learn thus play materials are vital in the development of the child. It is also closely tied to the development of cognitive, socio-emotional, and physical behaviors. This study therefore seeks to establish the determinant of provision of play materials in pre-schools in Namanga division Kajiado county. The objectives of the study are to identify the school factors determining the provision of ECD play materials; to find the Parents factors influencing ECDplay materials provision; to review socio-cultural factors that influence',play materials provision in pre-school. The study will employ Reinforcement theory which was developed by behaviorist school of psychology. Skinner believes that behavior is a function of its consequences. The study will be carried out in Namanga Division of Kajiado County; its target population will be pre-school teachers and PTA members in selected schools in Namanga. Descriptive research design will be adopted for the study, this will enable collection of information on attitudes and options of pre-school head teacher and Parent members on the determinants of provision of play materials in pre-schools in Namanga Division. A sample size of 76 will be appropriate for the study; both questionnaires and focus group discussions will be sampled. Cluster sampling technique known as LQAS (Lot Quality Assurance Survey) will be used; this will be followed by simple random sampling technique. Both private and public schools will be target by the study. Descriptive analysis will be used to analyze quantitative data while qualitative data will be analyzed by conducting a thematic analysis presentation which will then be done using charts, graphs, tables and quick impressionist summaries. The result of the study will be used by early childhood education developer to carry out effective planning for the general development of the child, this will enable ECD centres to focus on the needs of the child while coming up with play materials for these centres leading to improvement in play facilities for children leading to their cognitive and general development.

Effects of Interactive Homework Assignments on Parental Involvement in Homework and Public Primary Schools’ English Learning in Tanzania

Abstract:The factors associated with students’ success in learning may have been addressed but the impact of parental involvement continues to be a significant issue. Some schools in Tanzania post poor learning achievement amid claims that the traditional homework used in Public Primary Schools limit parental involvement and thus parents become not supportive to their children’s’ learning. This paper aimed at evaluating the effects of weekly Interactive English homework on parental involvement in homework and pupils’ English learning. Standard five pupils (N = 100) with their parents and 02 teachers participated in the 08-week study. 02 classes completed IHA (Interactive Homework Assignments) with directions for family and parent involvement. Two classes completed Non-Interactive Homework (no family involvement directions). Parents in Interactive homework group reported significantly higher levels of involvement than did Non-Interactive Parents. Pupils in IHA who more regularly involved parents significantly improved their behavior and skills needed for successful learning than Non-IHA pupils. The findings of this study support the hypothesis that IHA enhances parental involvement in homework and pupils learning in English than did the Non-IHA.

Abstract:Background: This study sought to investigate the relationship between parents’ level of education and pupils’ academic performance in primary schools. Methodology: A mixed-method research approach was used in this study to generate data. Using questionnaire and interview guide tools, data was collected from the study respondents including pupils, teachers, head teachers, parents as well and the Area Education Officer. Results: Findings revealed that parents’ level of education influences pupils’ academic performance. Tool items such as parents checking books and home works (M=1.70, SD=1.042), parents assisting in doing homework (M=2.43, SD=1.355), parents reading and replying to letters from schools (M=2.01, SD=1.131) and pupils having enough time at home to study (M=1.97, SD=1.050), were found to be among major factors that determine pupils’ performance. Conclusion: Parental level of education was statistically significant towards pupils’ academic performance in Palisa District. The educational attainment of their children in both rural and national samples was easily influenced by their conducive home study environment. Recommendation: Parents are advised to pay full attention to their children’s education at home. They should make a timetable for their children regarding homework and studies. In this way, their academic performance will be improved.
Influence of Principals’ Teaching Staff Development on Students’ Academic Performance in Kisumu County, Kenya

Abstract:Transformational leadership was operationalized as setting direction, staff development, building collaborative cultures, staffing the program, and academic performance as the KCSE mean score of a school for the period 2014 – 2018. The study arose from the fact that, high school principals are working hard yet the academic performance of public secondary schools in Kisumu County has remained generally poor. Between 2014 and 2018, only 26.9% of students from Kisumu County scored at least C+, and the average mean score in KCSE for the period was only 4.23, below 7.0, the cut out entry. At least 65% of the candidates from Kisumu County did not proceed to university education during the period. Several educational stakeholders had linked school leadership to the poor academic performance, but without empirical evidence. The study specifically investigated the influence of teaching staff development on the students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Kisumu County. The study adopted a cross sectional survey research design. The target population consisted of 204 principals, 2,196 teachers, and 13,213 Form Three students. In sampling, Krejcie and Morgan table was used to find 152 principals, 333 teachers and 378 students, from 152 schools. Data was collected using questionnaires, interviews, observation and document analysis, and analyzed using simple linear, simple correlation, and stepwise regression with dummy variables, at .05 level of significance. The study tested specific hypothesis that staff development by principals do not have a significant influence on academic performance. The study found 7 significant associations at α = .01, (ΥSDR*DVP = .594, p = .000; ΥSDR*BCC = .476, p = .000; ΥDVP*BCC = .719, p = .000; Υ =.416, p =.000; Υ = .685, p =.000; ΥDVP*ACP = .239, p =.000; ΥBCC*ACP = .212, p = .000) and one significant association at α = .05, ΥSDR*ACP =.203, p = .012. The study found that staff development (good) [F (2,149) = 4.027), p = .020, R2 adj = .039, t (149) = 2.604, p = .010]. The study recommends that the ministry of education should empower principals with resources that will enable them to empower their teaching staff by training them on various needs that may arise in the society from time to time, and since the society is dynamic continuous provision of resources by the ministry would be ideal.

Abstract:Humanity's phase-to-phase development necessitates adept management, crucial for community growth. Employing a quantitative research approach, this study investigates how familial managerial elements impact children's early school readiness. It scrutinizes two aspects: the influence of variables on parenting style within families and parenting style's impact on school readiness. Key variables include parents’ managerial perception, family socioeconomic status, and family involvement in kindergarten programs. Quantitative methods, encompassing statistical tests and SPSS analysis, meticulously explore the relationships and influences among these variables, unveiling significant effects. Importantly, parental managerial perception positively affects parenting style, socioeconomic status, and family involvement in kindergarten programs, quantitatively highlighting managerial elements' impact on child development. Furthermore, a management-focused parenting style demonstrates a direct and positive quantitative influence on children's school readiness. These findings underscore the significance of considering managerial aspects in families as pivotal contributors to children's educational outcomes. This rigorous quantitative approach enriches our comprehension of these influences and informs policies and interventions, enhancing school readiness and community development.
Multiple Facets of Parental Involvement and the Homework Performance of Primary Level Students

Abstract:This study examined the influence of multiple facets of parental involvement on the homework performance of primary school students. The research was quantitative in nature. We used survey method to investigate the influence of different facets of parental involvement on the homework performance of their children with the help of self-constructed questionnaire. We collected data from primary level students (n= 120) and their teachers (n=20) from 10 primary school. Self-constructed Parental Involvement Questionnaire (PIQ, 17 items) was used to collect data from students and Homework Performance Questionnaire (HPQ, items 13) was used to collect data from teachers. Parental involvement was determined with respect to three facets i.e., 1) administrative, 2) emotional and 3) cognitive. Inferential statistics were applied to analyze data. Independent sample t-test was conducted to assess the high and low parental involvement on the homework performance of students which was found significant (p <.05) for the administrative involvement (p=.049) and cognitive involvement (p=.005). The findings indicate the role of parents intellectual and organizational input on the homework performance of their children at primary level.

Abstract:Introduction. Parental involvement in children’s education means engagement and participation of parents in the educational activities of their children. The existing body of empirical research shows that parental involvement can influence academic performance of their children in two distinct ways, i.e. parental involvement in children education at home (helping children in homework and other academic discussions, etc.) and parental involvement in children education at school (participation in school function and meetings, etc.). Active involvement of parents in children’s education may even counterbalance the unfavourable effects of low socioeconomic status and underprivileged neighborhood. The overall effect of parental involvement in child education both at home and at school is a worthy source of improving the academic performance of children through securing higher grades at school. Aim. This research aimed to examine the effects of parental involvement in children education at home on academic performance of secondary schools students and to identify the difference of the effects of parental involvement on students of different gender, parent literacy status and parent importance to children education. Methodology and research methods. Cross sectional and a multistage stratified sampling technique was adopted to portray information from sample of 448 students on Likert scale. Chi square, Kendall’s Tau-c tests and Logistic regression analyses were used to determine the level, direction and strength of association among variables. Results. The results showed that the association of children academic performance was significant and positive when parents helped children with their homework (P = 0.000, Tc = 0.231), discussed school progress with children (P = 0.002, Tc = 0.122) and motivated children to work harder when they make a poor grade (P = 0.015, Tc = 0.133). Moreover, the results highlighted variation in the academic performance of children with respect to their gender, parental literacy status, parental importance to children education and parental involvement in children education at home. It was concluded that boys, children of literate parents, children whose parents give more importance to their education and their parents remain involved in their educational activities at home secured higher grades. Scientific novelty. The present study is distinctive in that it examined variations in children’s academic performance with respect to student gender, parental literacy status, and parental importance to their education in addition to focusing on the relationship between parental involvement in their children education at home and academic performance. Practical significance. The analysis of the research outcomes leads to several interesting results and proposes helpful suggestions for important stakeholders. The main study recommendations that will enable parents to promptly meet the educational demands of their children in order to aid them in getting better grades include awareness-raising campaigns for parents, income creation chances for disadvantaged families, and adult literacy initiatives.

Abstract:This research aimed at identifying the influence of socio-economic status towards parents’ involvement, the influence of teacher social competence towards parents’ involvement, the influence of school climate towards parents’ involvement, and the influence of parents’ socio-economic status, teacher social competence, and school climate towards students’ involvement in early childhood education, specifically in kindergartens located in Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara. This quantitative study was designed using ex post facto reseach method. There were 203 parents of 89 Kindergartens chosen to be the research sample determined by using purposive sampling technique. Questionnaires were used to collect the data which was then analyzed using descriptive analysis and regression. The result of study reveals a significant influence of soci-economic status; no significant influence of teacher social competence towards parents’ involvement; a significant influence of school climate towards parents’ involvement; and a simultaneously significant influence of socio-economic status, teacher social competence, and school climate towards parents’ involvement. Finally, in order to improve parental involvement, education policymakers have to consider socioeconomic status and school climate.
The influence of father absence on emotional adjustment of adolescent among secondary school learners in Makueni Sub- County, Kenya

Abstract:Adolescents living without father figures are likely to encounter some psycho-social challenges. Therefore, this study sought to investigate the influence of father absence on emotional adjustment of adolescent among secondary school learners in Makueni-Sub County, Kenya. The study adopted quantitative descriptive survey design a total sample of 344 respondents, all form three students sampled through non-random. Data was collected through questionnaires. Analysis for quantitative data was done using descriptive statistics involving means and frequencies, and inferential statistics involving chi-square and Pearson correlation. This process was aided by use of a computer program, Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 28. The study established a correlation between the availability of father or male figure and adolescents’ psychosocial wellbeing. To establish the influence of father absence on emotional adjustment, a regression analysis was conducted, and the findings showed that, and P value was above 0.005 significant level. Therefore, according to the results presented, father-absence did not have significant influence emotional regulation among adolescents. On father absence and social behavior among secondary school learners in Makueni Sub-County, regression analysis findings showed a P value which is less than the 0.005 level of significance. This revealed that the independent variable had an influence on the dependent variable. Thus, father-absence had an influence on social behavior among secondary school learners in Makueni Sub-County, Kenya. The informed conclusions shed light on the complexities of fatherlessness and absent fathers. Multiple stakeholders may benefit from the findings of the study including adolescents, caregivers, psychologists, teachers, policy makers and parents, by knowing the psychological effects of father’s absence on the adolescents’ development hence adapting appropriate strategies to deal with the challenges.

Abstract:Management is a concept concerned with making decisions and taking corrective actions to achieve an organization’s long-term targets, objectives, and goals. Firms obtain a sustained competitive advantage through exploiting internal strength by responding to environmental opportunities while neutralizing external threats and avoiding internal weaknesses. The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of personnel management on students’ academic performance in Meru central sub-county, Kenya. The study was anchored under Contingency theory, and it adopted mixed method research with a target population of 432 respondents. The investigator used Slovin’s formula to get a sample size of 207 respondents drawn from 20 public secondary schools comprising of 20 principals, 40 PTA/BOM chairpersons, 20 students council representatives and 127 HoDs, who were selected using both purposive for principals, BOM and PTA chairperson, and simple random sampling for students councils and HODs. Data collection was conducted through the administration of questionnaires to student’s council representatives, HODs, BOM and PTA chairpersons and interview schedule for the principals. A pilot study was carried out in 2 public secondary schools who were not included in the main study. To validate the researcher made use of supervisor’s comments and test the reliability of the research instruments by administering the questionnaire twice over different periods and calculate the reliability coefficient prior to the study. This study abided by the ethical practices in the field of research such as confidentiality, seek authorization from the relevant authorities, informed consent among others. Data in this research were gathered through the administration of surveys and were subsequently processed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 20. The overall response rate from the entire pool of respondents was 73.91%. The investigation revealed that school principals frequently employed multiple leadership approaches, with the instructional and transformational styles being the most favored. Moreover, a substantial 78.4% of the participants strongly believed that the leadership of principals significantly impacted students’ academic achievements. The study also determined that close monitoring had a notable effect on student academic performance, indicated by a mean score of 4.36 (standard deviation = 0.61). Additionally, the research found that 67.3% of the respondents expressed reservations about the influence of motivation on students’ academic performance. Notably, the study revealed that target setting had a positive impact on students’ academic performance, with an overall mean of 4.61 (standard deviation = 0.49). In conclusion, the study indicates that school principals adopted adaptable leadership strategies. Furthermore, it underscores the high impact of leadership, target setting, and monitoring on students’ academic performance. Consequently, it is recommended that the Teachers Service Commission should ensure an adequate supply of teachers in public secondary schools to allow principals to focus on school administration rather than teaching. Collaboration between political leaders and school management is also advised for the benefit of both students and schools. Finally, the study suggests that principals should continue employing instructional and transformational leadership styles in their school environments.
Parental Influence on Children’s Self- esteem and Academic Performance among Secondary School Students in Two Counties in Kenya

Abstract:The environment in which a child is brought up is likely to influence the level of self-esteem of the child. As such, the death of parents that results in orphanhood may have setbacks on the development of self-esteem of orphans. Self-esteem is central to high academic performance and this is a key factor for development in any nation. The self-esteem of students may have influence on academic work since the students with high self-esteem are said to perform highly academically. The purpose of this study was to find out whether there is significant difference in self-esteem levels of orphans and non orphans in Kirinyaga and Nyeri Counties, Kenya. This study was guided by Bowlby‘s theory of attachment. The study adopted a survey, which utilized casual comparative research design. According to the education offices in the two counties, the total population of students was 58,448 Simple random and purposive sampling methods were used to obtain the sample which was 400 students. The data was collected using a questionnaire. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The major finding in this study was that the orphans registered lower level of self-esteem than non orphans. The study recommends that orphans should be incorporated into comprehensive child protection policies and programmes that would enlighten the caregivers on requirements for psychological development to ensure development of high self-esteem which would translate to high academic performance and high national development.

Abstract:Secondary school education forms the academic foundation for the acquisition of knowledge in higher institutions. Science Education is the bedrock for technological advancement in Kenya and the world at large. Biology is a key science subject and forms the foundation of various fields; therefore, it is an essential discipline. The performance of students in Biology has generally been low for the last few years. The ordinary Conventional Instructional Approach used by teachers in increasingly diverse classrooms may have contributed to the minimal performance. This study aimed to assess the effect of the Differentiated Instructional Approach (DIA) on Learner Participation and Academic Achievement in Biology in Public Secondary Schools. Quasi-Experimental Research Design was used in particular, Solomon Four Control Group Design. The target population was 2405 form two Biology students. Purposive sampling was used to select 8 Co-educational County Secondary Schools with a sample size of 360 students. Simple random sampling was used to select and assign the participating schools to Experimental and Control groups. Descriptive statistics was used to analyse the data, while the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 26 was used for data analysis. The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference in all three hypotheses, with the first objective giving (F117.220, p<0.05), the second objective giving (F 54.049, p ˂ 0.05) while the third objective gave (F 65.417, p < 0.05) significant values. The results indicated that learners subjected to the Differentiated Instructional Approach did better than those instructed using Conventional Teaching Approaches. The study also concluded that DIA improved learners' Participation and Academic Achievement. The findings of this study would be significant to curriculum developers, educators, administrators and will also contribute to the knowledge base for the Differentiated Instructional Approach, forming the basis for further research
Home-School-Community Partnerships: An Imperative in Teacher Education Programmes in Kenya

Abstract:There is increasing recognition of the need to train teachers in home- school-community partnership. This is because knowledge of such collaboration has a powerful influence on a learner’s development, both academically and behaviourally. Furthermore, the families and communities benefit as well. Research indicates that only a small percentage of training institutions offer comprehensive programmes in home-school-community collaboration to enable teachers have a sound grounding in the theory and practice in this field. Since home, school and community partnerships were claimed to be weak, especially at primary school level in Kakamega County, Kenya, this study was designed to determine whether teachers in primary schools in the county had undergone the relevant training. A survey involving a sample of 368 primary school teachers in 34 schools were selected from a population of 8 964 teachers in 848 primary schools, distributed across the 12 sub-counties in the county, using stratified random sampling. A self-designed questionnaire was used to collect data. The data were then analysed and presented by means of such descriptive statistics as frequencies, percentages and the mean. It was established that up to one third of the teachers who participated in the study had never studied a course related to homeschool-community partnerships in their professional life. This finding could be used to improve practice involving these partnerships, teacher training content and implementing relevant policies as well as programmes so as to attain meaningful learning among the pupils.
