Abstract:English language learning is pegged on four core skills namely writing, reading, listening and speaking. Acquisition of language springs from the latter; verbal skills (listening & speaking) and ignite the learning process in totality. Teaching of oral skills is barred by hurdles like ineffective delivery strategies. This study investigates instructional strategies utilized in development of oral skills. Descriptive survey, as a research design, was adopted. The study was grounded on Constructivism Learning Theory. The target population consisted of 37 public primary schools in Embu-West, 37 language panel chairpersons, 67 grade 3 classes and 67 grade 3 teachers of English. The study sample was chosen using stratified and simple random sampling methods. The sample consisted of 10 schools, 10 grade 3 classes, 10 language panel chairpersons and 10 grade 3 teachers. For data collection, teacher questionnaires, language panel chairpersons interview schedule, classroom observation guide and focus group discussion for learners were used. Quantitative data was analyzed descriptively using SPSS version 25.0 and presented in form of tables and percentages whereas qualitative data was analyzed thematically and presented narratively. Results revealed that storytelling, pair work, communication games, group work, role-play and songs among others form the major strategies in the teaching of oral skills. The results led to the conclusion that storytelling, pair work, songs and role-play form the common strategies used in development of oral skills. The study recommends that teachers adopt use of these interactive strategies and motivate learners to practice and develop interest in learning of oral skills among others. These findings may be beneficial to both curriculum developers and implementers for effective teaching and learning.

Abstract:Research on English language instruction, particularly on oral English, is increasingly growing in Ghana and in many countries where the English language is not only used as an official language but also as a language for the medium of instruction and a subject of study in schools. This can perhaps be attributed to the global demand for and use of the English language despite the many difficulties in its instruction. The current study investigates the instructional strategies teachers of English in selected senior high schools in Ghana employ during oral English instruction. Utilizing a mixed-method approach with a convergent parallel design, the study collected data through questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations involving 43 English teachers from five senior high schools. The findings reveal a predominant reliance on traditional and direct instructional strategies such as question-and-answer sessions and drills in lieu of more interactive and indirect methods like paired conversations, oral reports, debates, etc. Meanwhile, teachers attribute their instructional choices to large class sizes, teaching environment, instructional resources and the teacher’s pedagogical skills. Based on these findings, The study concludes by advocating for the integration of a diverse range of instructional strategies, especially interactive and experiential strategies, to enhance student engagement and improve oral language competencies both inside and outside the classroom. Abstract:The study intended to analyze the influence of strategies employed in teacher-learners’ classroom interactions through English on learners’ learning performance in the lower primary of Musanze District. It followed a sequential exploratory research design. Six primary schools were purposively selected for qualitative data gathering, and ninety-one schools were sampled for quantitative data collection. Qualitative data were collected by semi-structured interviews conducted with 12 teachers and 6 school head teachers, while quantitative data were obtained from the written questionnaire administered to 84 teachers in lower primary. The thematic analysis was employed to analyze qualitative information while quantitative data were treated using inferential statistical analysis by T-test and ANOVA. Findings from the study revealed that some strategies employed in teacher-learners’ classroom interactions do not provide room of improving English language used as Medium of Instruction. Therefore, barriers in Medium of Instruction lead to misunderstanding or wrong interpretation of questions or other required tasks during school exercises, tests or examinations, that provoke low learners’ learning performance mostly in public and government-aided schools compared to their fellows in private schools, with satisfactory proficiency in English. Then, a statistically significant difference was detected between learners’ learning performance of learners in private versus their counterparts in public and government-aided schools. The study concluded that the language barrier handicaps effective teacher- learners’ classroom interactions and learners’ learning performance. Then, it recommended teachers and learners to adopt measures that improve their English proficiency as well as their interactions, to refine learners’ understanding of subjects taught in English to boost learners’ learning performance.

Abstract:Purpose: This paper sought to determine the teaching methods and strategies increasing learners’ motivation in English language lectures at the university level. The study was based on social cultural theory of learning. Methodology: The study adopted quantitative design, descriptive statistics method to understand the problem at hand. The target population consisted of 375 Bachelor of Education Arts students. Simple random sampling was used to sample 100 third year Bachelor of Education (Arts) students in a public university. Questionnaires and document analysis of research articles were used to collect raw data from 100 students. The data was analyzed using SPSS computer package. Findings: The teaching methods that highly motivated students were explanation, discussion, interactive lectures and demonstration, teaching methods that moderately motivated learners were task-based method, case study and communicative language teaching and least motivating was audio lingual method. Highly motivating teaching strategies were group discussion and presentation, CATs and drama and moderately motivating teaching strategies were class assignments, debate, term paper assignments, pair work and dialogues. Recommendation: Based on the study findings the study recommends that lecturers to strive to determine their learner’s needs and specific learning styles in order to adopt the correct teaching methods and strategies that motivate them to learn English language.

Abstract:This study reviews the classroom interaction discussions between the teachers and learners in a selected primary school in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The discourse analysis was used to examine verbal interaction as a significant component of teaching techniques for enhancing effective teaching of English language. The main objective of this study was to analyze the verbal communication between the teachers and pupils in the classroom during teaching and learning of materials in English language. Qualitative research design was used in this study. Data were collected through interviews. As the teaching and learning of English language develops between the teachers and pupils in the primary schools, both negative and positive factors were observed when they were communicating. The relationship between the pupils and teachers responses to the factors influencing teaching and learning the subject was critically examined. The interviews conducted confirmed some of the challenges to include the use of local words by the pupils and lack of understanding of some local isiXhosa words by their teachers. The result also shows that pupils faced different hindrances in understanding some English language vocabularies taught in the classroom. The results also revealed that the classroom interaction was successful due to good methods introduced by the teachers in transferring knowledge to the pupils. Recommendations were made on how the teaching and learning of English language could be improved by appropriate mechanism or strategies to obtain successful results.

Abstract:Language is very important in our lives. Through language, we convey our feelings, desires, and thoughts. Of importance is English language in Kenya which is the medium of instruction from upper primary school and beyond. English is taught as a Second Language in schools in Kenya and has implications to the school curriculum and education in general. This paper is a discussion of the Social Development and Interaction theory advanced by Vygotsky (1978) and its implications for English language teaching in Kenya. This theory formed the theoretical framework for a study that looked at the teaching of English oral communication skills in upper primary school in a particular district in Kenya in the year 2009. This paper is drawn from part of the literature review that guided the study and the recommendations that the study arrived at. The study utilized a qualitative research approach with a heuristic methodology. The research population consisted of primary school teachers teaching English in upper primary classes and standard six pupils. Data was collected using structured and focused group interview schedules, observation checklists, and document analysis. In the light of the findings, the study concluded that the kind of new language items, learning activities and methods of conveying the meaning of new language items that the teachers selected were inadequate and ineffective in enhancing interaction. So were the practice activities adopted by the teachers and the strategies used in motivating learners in the teaching and learning of oral communication skills. The argument advanced in this paper is that effective teaching of English language in Kenya demands an interactive approach. In other words, English teachers should use interactive strategies in their teaching because as Vygotsky (1978) argues, children learn language best through interaction. Article visualizations:

Abstract:This study assessed the effectiveness of inclusive teaching strategies in improving students’ academic achievement in primary schools in Makambako town council. A mixed research approach embedded on the convergent design was adopted under pragmatism philosophy. Data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, focused group discussions, observation guides, and documentary reviews from a sample size of 54 respondents. Data were analyzed descriptively using SPSS version 20 and thematically to enrich quantitative and qualitative information. The study revealed the inclusive teaching and learning strategies used in primary schools were observed in educators than in the Organization of Education. The study concludes that teaching in inclusive classrooms needs to observe stipulated strategies. Consequently, the study recommended the government should propose compulsory special needs education to all teachers when they are pursuing their studies in college. Additionally, the school administrations should put more effort into making sure they eliminate any kind of constraints that can hinder the strategies of teaching and learning in inclusive classrooms.

Abstract:This research seeks to examine and describe the complex interaction between language and identity in the lives of the women of Kitui West Constituency, Kitui County, Kenya. Grounded in ethnography, this study explores the cultural and social factors that inform language variations and identity construction in diverse women’s collectives. The targeted institutions include church-related organizations, SACCOs, and informal community-based organizations. The combined focus on qualitative and quantitative methodology: in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and sociolinguistic questionnaires fills a gap in knowledge pertaining to language and identity in multilingual African settings and provides impetus for reflections on language policy as well as women’s rights and emancipation reveal the gendered interdependence between the patterns of language choice and societal factors such as education, religion, urbanization, and economic activity. The analysis of the data provided shows that women in Kitui West have diverse linguistic resources that they negotiate every day while juggling between cultural and socially imposed roles and rights. Consequently, it fills a gap in knowledge pertaining to language and identity in multilingual African settings and provides impetus for reflections on language policy as well as women’s rights and emancipation.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to explore the shortcomings in spoken English among students in rural primary and secondary schools in non-native English-speaking countries and finding out effective strategies to address them. The study adopted convergent parallel design as one of the categories of mixed method. The study involved 16 schools, representing both primary and secondary levels, selected from 10 rural districts in Rwanda through systematic and random sampling. The study involved a sample of 100 primary and secondary school students and 16 teachers of English and the data was collected using interviews, focus group discussions, and non-participant observations. Both quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis respectively. The findings revealed significant shortcomings in spoken English, encompassing grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, accent, fluency, fear, and lack of confidence. The study emphasized a comprehensive approach to language instruction, advocating for diverse strategies such as cooperative activities, drills, pictures, media integration, group discussions, and teacher training. Emphasizing the importance of consistent English communication both inside and outside the classroom, the research highlighted the necessity for a balanced teaching methodology that goes beyond a singular focus on grammar. The study recommended that teachers of English should recognize the complex nature of spoken English proficiency and adopt a comprehensive approach that addresses various dimensions. In addition, school managers should encourage both learners and teachers to engage in English communication to overcome linguistic barriers and create conducive learning environment.

Abstract:This study entitled “Students’ English Language Acquisition and their Proficiency Improvement at IPRC Kigali, Rwanda”, was carried out to evaluate the effect of students’ English language acquisition on their proficiency improvement at IPRC Kigali, Rwanda. It had three (3) specific objectives which were to: assess strategies used for teaching English Language at IPRC Kigali, identify ways in which IPRC Kigali students use to learn English as a language of instruction, as well as identifying factors affecting English acquisition as the second language at IPRC Kigali. The methodology that was used in data collection is descriptive survey. Purposive and stratified random were used as sampling techniques. Questionnaires were used as data collection instruments. The sample size was determined by Slovin’s Formula as the population size is definite. 153 students were selected to answer to research questions. 93 of them responded and returned questionnaires. The data collected was analyzed using SPSS software. The study came up with the following findings: The mostly used strategies for the English Language Acquisition at IPRC Kigali include lecturers creating the learner-centered classroom to set students’ learning responsibilities (79.6%), and building in students’ motivation including value, self-efficacy and attributions (75.2%). The most ways in which IPRC Kigali students use to Learn English as a language of instruction include imitation (100%), repetition and practice to pronounce words and memorize them (100) conversations and discussions with colleagues and lecturers (76.4%), using English in different situations like in meetings, in shopping malls, ... and other extra-curricular activities (75.2%). It has also been revealed that age (76.3%), attitude towards English (67.8%), motivation (100%), first language proficiency (89.3%), technology (100%), and Intellectual capacity (86.0%) affect the Acquisition of English as a Second Language. It has been recommended that It is of paramount importance to enhance teaching of English as a subject but also keeping in mind that this is a Medium of Instruction in Rwanda. Lecturers should interlink this philosophy with methodologies and strategies that allow students to take lead in the teaching and learning process. Lecturers should consider the students’ individual differences to help them improve individually. Drama and play should also be integrated in teaching and learning/acquisition of English to improve students’ speaking skills through performance.

Abstract:This case study aims to investigate the impact of English writing skills on learners' performance in secondary schools in Kicukiro District. Guided by Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory and Richards’ Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), the study used a mixed-methods approach. The study targeted 147 participants, comprising learners, teachers, and heads of studies, from which a sample of 75 participants was selected using proportionate stratified and purposive sampling techniques. Primary data was collected through both interviews and questionnaires, assessing the impact of English writing skills on learners' performance, exploring effective teaching approaches, identifying factors contributing to low English writing skills among learners at secondary schools in Rwanda, and examining the influence of teaching strategies on learners' writing skills. Out of these findings, the paper discloses that essay writing, agenda writing, playwriting, poetry writing, and minute writing skills considerably influence learners’ performance. The study suggests enhancing learners' writing skills through regular writing activities like letters and short stories. Teachers of English should also be role models for their learners when teaching to uplift their writing motivation. In a similar or different setting, future studies should investigate the relevance of other skills to primary learners.

Abstract:The research aimed at finding out the problems faced by undergraduate students and strategies they used to overcome problems during the process of research and writing thesis. This research generally employed a qualitative approach, but some data were analyzed quantitatively. The sample of the research involved the eighth and tenth semester students of English Education Department at Islamic State University of Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten. The data were obtained through questionnaire and interview. The result revealed that most of the students got problems in how to begin the research while only few students got difficulty in working with the advisors. In addition, strategies mostly used by the students to overcome the problems were reading many books, journals and articles related to the topic whereas the strategy of asking somebody to analyze the data was at the lowest rate. Therefore, it could be concluded that the students could be able to solve their problems they faced during the thesis writing process by applying the strategies.

Abstract:English reading skills are essential in academic and professional development. While appropriate teaching methods enhance learner acquisition of reading skills, inappropriate teaching methods hamper the acquisition of reading skills. This article examines the type of teaching methods used when teaching reading skills and seeks to establish the influence of teaching methods used on the acquisition of English reading skills. Data were obtained from 400 form three students and 40 teachers of English language from 20 public secondary schools in Teso North sub-county. Stratified, simple random and proportional sampling was used to obtain the study sample. Data were collected using questionnaires, interview schedules and classroom observation schedules. The sampled students filled out questionnaires and teachers were interviewed and observed in the classroom. Data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicate that teaching methods such as group work, pair work and discussion were the most significant factors influencing the acquisition of reading skills p < 0.05. The study concluded that pedagogy has a significant relationship with the acquisition of English reading skills. The study recommended that teachers should use a variety of teaching methods. This is because each method complements the other.

Abstract:The study looks into the perception of students and teachers towards the use of code switching in English classroom in Mbooni West Sub County. The study applied Communication Accommodation Theory developed by Giles and Coupland (1991). The study adopted a descriptive Survey Research design. The area of study was 15 selected schools in Mbooni west Sub County. The methods of collecting data were: an observation schedule, teachers and students’ questionnaires. The target population for this study was the teachers and students in 41 public schools in Mbooni West Sub County. The sample size of the study was 300 students and 60 teachers of English from 15 schools that were sampled through purposive and simple random sampling methods. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were applied in the analysis of the data. The findings of the study also show that while students had positive perceptions towards Code Switching, teachers had both positive and negative perceptions. They also show that Code Switching has both positive and negative impact on the performance of English. Therefore, the study recommends that, teachers need to use Code Switching wisely, and also maximize the exposure to English language in the classrooms. The Stakeholders in education should be made aware on the presence of Code Switching to determine whether it should be incorporated into the curriculum designed. It is hoped that the findings of this study inform teachers and students on how to navigate through Code Switching as a communicative strategy and as an important technique in learning of the English Language.

Abstract:Foreign language skills are often a problem due to declining interest while the demands of mastering foreign languages include the demands of the times and global competition. These skills are applied to elementary school-age children. The purpose of this study is to describe how strategies to improve foreign language skills of elementary school-age children at Miracle Language Center, Narathiwat, Thailand. This research uses field research, namely qualitative-descriptive research design. The research informants consisted of teachers and students. Interviews with teachers to obtain general implementation information and with students to obtain information on the extent of foreign language acquisition at Miracle Language Center educational institutions. The method used is the Miles and Huberman (2014) approach of digging, reviewing data until obtaining saturated data, then all data is collected, data reduction, presenting data and the final step is making conclusions. The results in this study indicate that the strategy of improving children's language skills by providing English and Indonesian vocabulary with a vocabulary matching system as a basic understanding of language that is able to improve children's learning skills and enthusiasm due to the language environment in the Miracle Language Center institution, Thailand being an effective institution in supporting the ability to master foreign languages for children from an early age with a vulnerable 10-12 years.

Abstract:In the context of English as a foreign language, listening and speaking skills are frequently discussed in isolation. In fact, to improve students' language mastery, the skills had better be taught in an integrated way. This research aimed to unveil activities for teaching oral skills that teachers implemented and discussed their challenges in the implementation. The data of this case study were obtained by observing three classes and interviewing three university teachers who taught integrated listening and speaking skills in an English language education department of a university in Indonesia. To analyze data gained from the interview, we used open, analytical, axial, and selective coding to identify the emerged themes using thematic analysis. Findings revealed that discussion, information gap, role play and simulation, and oral presentation were applied in the classrooms. The study also revealed that the challenges of applying the activities come not only from the students' side, such as their anxieties, low participation, and tendency to use their first language, but also from the teachers' part regarding their classroom management skills. Those findings implied that the success of oral skill instruction is achievable through various activities that involve students' listening and speaking skills at once.

Enhancing English First Additional Language Teaching and Learning in Grade seven Rural Classrooms: A Comprehensive Evaluation of Teaching Strategies

Abstract:Language used for teaching and learning (LoLT) is considered as the essential tool that drives learning in classrooms. When the language of teaching and learning is not the mother tongue (MT) it becomes a barrier to teaching and learning. This study aims to evaluate strategies that can be employed to foster teaching and learning in English First Additional Language (EFAL) classrooms. The study employed a qualitative research method through case study design. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and class observations; it made use of purposive sampling which involved ten educators and seven learners from grade seven classrooms. Thematic analysis approach was adopted to analyse the collected data and themes were extracted. Findings of this paper showed that language as medium of instruction (MoI) plays a crucial role in teaching and learning, and the confusion could lead to a mismatch of concepts and ideas when it is different from learners’ and educators’ home languages. This requires EFAL educators to possess specific first additional language teaching competencies, skills, and an extremely high sense of personal linguistic proficiency in the language of instruction (LOI). The paper, therefore, recommends that to improve EFAL learners’ performance, language educators must utilise conceivable teaching and learning strategies that would be relevant to the subject, content, topics, and class activities. It was also recommended that EFAL learners be exposed to language learning programs that would develop and improve basic language skills in the targeted language. Educators are encouraged to use handcrafted teaching resources and DoE renovate infrastructure and provide basic resources.

A Model for Integration of Language & Leadership Learning Strategies for Communicative Competency and Transformational Servant Leadership for Students in Secondary Schools in Kenya

Abstract:This research aimed at establishing how English as a medium of instruction could be used as a vehicle for attitude change, exploring how integrated textual and audio-visual media could be used in learning English and leadership, investigating the teachers’ core beliefs and opinions on student leadership, investigating the effects of leadership on the students’ academics and relationships and developing a model for the integration of language and leadership learning. Literature review comprised of the function of language in the human society, language learning and the transformational servant leadership theories. The sample was; fifty principals, 116 teachers, 146 prefects and 1176 ordinary students. Data was mined using questionnaires, interview protocols and a written Pre and post-test. The study established that language has power to change attitude, gives confidence to communicate and that textual and audio-visual media are significant in the ESL classroom. Teachers’ believed that leaders are made, high achievers make good leaders, fluency, eloquence, personality traits and physical appearance influenced selecting students to particular leadership positions. Teachers felt that prefects should be democratically elected. Through the triangulation of primary and secondary data a Lingua leadership Model was developed tested and validated. A two tailed t- test was done and the result led to the rejection of the null hypothesis at .001 level of significance. The four skills of language were examined and the results led to the rejection of the null hypothesis at.001 level of significance. It was established that leadership affected the learners’ academics and their relationships. There was a significant difference between the student’s score at primary (KCPE) and the final mean score at secondary (KCSE) at .001 level of significance. This led to the rejection of the null hypothesis. Mistrust among students and between students and their leaders were among the causes of unrests in schools. The relationship between prefects and teachers in most schools was negative. Effects were more felt in Girls’ schools than boys’ schools and were less severe in day schools than in boarding schools.

Strategies Used by English Second Language Teachers to Cope with Teaching Challenges

Abstract:The main aim of the study is to investigate the strategies used by English Second Language (ESL) teachers to cope with their specific teaching challenges in Senior Secondary Schools in Ohangwena Region, Namibia. The study used the phenomenological qualitative research design to collect data from a purposively selected sample of 33 ESL teachers who have taught for at least two years in the Ohangwena Region. Data were collected using focus group discussions and analyzed using the thematic analysis method. The study found that ESL teachers in Ohangwena Region mainly use strategies such as motivating learners, a learner-centered teaching approach, a group work teaching approach, teachers’ teamwork, and different sources of teaching materials to cope with their respective teaching challenges. While the coping strategies teachers use have been reported to be helpful in ESL teaching, there is still a need to build the teachers’ capacity on the good practices in using such strategies to mitigate their teaching challenges.

Abstract:The aim of this research was to establish the functions of code switching in the English language classroom in Mbooni West sub county. The functions are based on language use by both the teachers and the students in the classroom setup. The study applied Communication Accommodation Theory developed by Giles and Coupland. The study adopted a descriptive Survey Research design. The area of study was 15 selected schools in Mbooni west Sub County. The methods of collecting data were: an observation schedule, teachers and students’ questionnaires. The target population for this study was the teachers and students in 41 public schools in Mbooni West Sub County. The sample size of the study was 300 students and 60 teachers of English from 15 schools that were sampled through purposive and simple random sampling methods. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were applied in the analysis of the data. The findings of the study revealed that code switching enhances the teaching/learning of English-speaking skills. The teachers use code switching for curriculum access, for classroom management discourse and for interpersonal relationships. Learners used code switching as a communicative strategy, for affective functions and for socio pragmatic functions.
