Abstract:In this study, a rotating gliding arc (RGA) plasma reactor was investigated for the decomposition of gasification derived tar. Toluene, naphthalene, and phenol were selected as tar surrogates to be simultaneously decomposed. The effects of steam addition, preheating temperature, tar, and CO2 concentration were studied and the decomposition pathways of tar model compounds were proposed. The optimum amount of steam can facilitate tar destruction, enhance H2 yield, and, importantly, suppress the formation of carbon black. The conversions of toluene, naphthalene, and phenol can be up to 85.8, 76.4, and 93.4%, respectively, when 8–12% steam is applied in the system. As expected, the increase of tar or CO2 concentration reduces the conversions of tar. Interestingly, increasing the preheating temperature to 600 °C enhances the tar conversions but is then surprisingly followed by a slight drop with the subsequent increase in temperature. The conversions of the three components decrease in the order of phenol > toluene > naphthalene under the studied conditions. Primary decomposition products of toluene, naphthalene, and phenol are determined to be benzyl, naphthyl, and phenoxy compounds, which would be further degraded by active species such as N2 (A3∑u+), OH radicals, O radicals, etc. into smaller molecules like H2, CO, and CO2.

Abstract:In this study, a rotating gliding arc (RGA) plasma reactor co-driven by a magnetic field and tangential flow has been investigated for the reforming of toluene as a tar surrogate from the gasification of biomass or waste. The effect of steam and CO2 addition on the reaction performance of the plasma tar reforming process has been evaluated in terms of the conversion of toluene, gas production and energy efficiency. The presence of CO2 in the reaction suppresses the conversion of toluene. By contrast, adding an appropriate amount of steam to the reforming process significantly enhances the conversion of toluene, while further increasing steam concentration reduces the conversion of toluene. The maximum toluene conversion of 85.2% is achieved at an optimal steam concentration of 16%. Optical emission spectroscopic (OES) diagnostics have been used to understand the generation of reactive species contributed to the conversion of toluene and reaction intermediates in the plasma reforming process. The possible reaction pathways and mechanisms have been discussed based on the analysis of gases and condensed liquid by-products combined with the emission spectra of the plasma in the presence or absence of steam and CO2.

Abstract:Plasma-catalytic steam reforming of mixed tar model compounds (toluene and naphthalene) from biomass gasification has been carried out in a gliding arc discharge (GAD) plasma reactor. The influence of three catalysts (15Ni, 7.5Ni7.5Co and 15Co) on the performance of the plasma reforming of toluene and naphthalene has been evaluated including the conversion, the energy efficiency, the yield/selectivity of gaseous products and the formation of by-products. A plasma-catalysis synergy was generated when introducing the catalysts to the plasma tar reforming process. The highest toluene conversion of 95.7% and naphthalene conversion of 83.4% were achieved when the 7.5Ni7.5Co catalyst was integrated with the GAD plasma at a total tar concentration of 16.0 g/Nm(3) and a discharge power of 75 W. The corresponding energy efficiency for the conversion of toluene and naphthalene was 38.0 g/kWh and 2.3 g/kWh, respectively, giving the highest total tar conversion of 95.1% and overall energy efficiency of 40.3 g/kWh. The coupling of GAD with the 7.5Ni7.5Co catalyst also showed the highest yield of H-2 (42.3%) and CO (37.3%) and the highest CO selectivity of 40.1%. In addition, the combination of the GAD plasma with 7.5Ni7.5Co reduced the carbon deposition on the catalyst surfaces and the formation of by-products in the plasma-catalytic tar reforming process. The enhanced reducibility and NiCo alloy formation of the 7.5Ni7.5Co catalyst contribute to the enhanced conversion of mixed tar compounds and the formation of the plasma-catalysis synergy in the hybrid plasma-catalytic tar reforming process.
Destruction of Toluene, Naphthalene and Phenanthrene As Model Tar Compounds in a Modified Rotating Gliding Arc Discharge Reactor

Abstract:Tar removal is one of the greatest technical challenges of commercial gasification technologies. To find an efficient way to destroy tar with plasma, a rotating gliding arc (RGA) discharge reactor equipped with a fan-shaped swirling generator was used for model tar destruction in this study. The solution of toluene, naphthalene and phenanthrene is used as a tar surrogate and is destroyed in humid nitrogen. The influence of tar, CO2 and moisture concentrations, and the discharge current on the destruction efficiency is emphasized. In addition, the combination of Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalyst with plasma was tested for plasma catalytic tar destruction. The toluene, naphthalene and phenanthrene destruction efficiency reached up to 95.2%, 88.9%, and 83.9% respectively, with a content of 12 g/Nm3 tar, 12% moisture, 15% CO2, and a flow rate of 6 NL/min, whereas 9.3 g/kW·h energy efficiency was achieved. The increase of discharge current is advantageous in terms of decreasing black carbon production. The participation of Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalyst shows considerable improvement in destruction efficiency, especially at a relatively high flow rate (over 9 NL/min). The major liquid by-products are phenylethyne, indene, acenaphthylene and fluoranthene. The first two are majorly converted from toluene, acenaphthylene is produced by the co-reaction of toluene and naphthalene in the plasma, and fluoranthene is converted by phenanthrene.

Abstract:Non-thermal plasma is considered a promising and attractive approach for the removal of tars from biomass gasification to deliver a clean and high quality syngas (a mixture of H2 and CO). In this study, an AC gliding arc discharge (GAD) reactor has been developed for the conversion of toluene as a tar model compound using nitrogen as a carrier gas. The presence of steam in the plasma reaction produces OH radicals which open a new reaction route for the conversion of toluene through a stepwise oxidation of toluene and intermediates, resulting in a significant enhancement in both the conversion of toluene and the energy efficiency of the plasma process. The effects of steam-to-carbon (S/C) molar ratio, toluene feed rate and specific energy input (SEI) on the performance of the plasma steam reforming of toluene have been investigated. The optimal S/C molar ratio was found to be between 2 and 3 for high toluene conversion and energy efficiency. The maximum toluene conversion of 51.8% was achieved at an optimal S/C molar ratio of 2, a toluene feed flow rate of 4.8ml/h and a SEI of 0.3kWh/m3, while the energy efficiency of the plasma process reached a maximum (∼46.3g/kWh) at a toluene feed flow rate of 9.6ml/h and a SEI of 0.19kWh/m3. H2, CO and C2H2 were identified as the major gas products with a maximum syngas yield of 73.9% (34.9% for H2 and 39% for CO). Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) has been used to understand the role of steam on the formation of reactive species in the plasma conversion of toluene. The possible reaction pathways in the plasma conversion of toluene have also been proposed by combined means of the analysis of gas and liquid samples and OES diagnostics.

Abstract:To supply combustion engines or gasturbines with fuel gas obtained from biomass gasification, it is necessary to clean the fuel gas. Also the production of chemicals by processes such as Fisher-Tropsch requires a high gas quality. Especially heavy aromatic hydrocarbons (“tars”) must be removed. In this work, we give an overview of our investigations on tar removal by pulsed corona discharges as an alternative approach to catalytic or thermal tar cracking. Experimental results (at a gas temperature of 200°C) are reported for the removal of various model tar components in synthetic fuel gas. In order to identify the major reaction pathways, experiments were also done on tars in individual fuel gas components. The results show that tar removal by pulsed corona processing is possible. The process for tar removal is mainly via oxidation. Also termination reactions by CO play an important role.

Abstract:Steam reforming of mixed toluene and naphthalene as tar surrogate has been investigated in an AC gliding arc discharge plasma, with particular emphasis on better understanding the effect of steam and CO2 on the reaction performance. Results show that H2, C2H2 and CO are the major gas products in the plasma steam reforming of tar for energy recovery. The addition of a small amount of steam remarkably enhances the conversions of both toluene and naphthalene, from 60.4% to 76.1% and 57.6% to 67.4%, respectively, as OH radicals formed by water dissociation create more reaction pathways for the conversion of toluene, naphthalene and their fragments. However, introducing CO2 to this process has a negative effect on the tar reforming. Optical emission spectroscopic diagnostics has shown the formation of a variety of reactive species in the plasma process. Trace amounts of monocyclic and bicyclic aromatic condensable by-products are also detected. The destruction of toluene and naphthalene can be initiated through the collisions of tar surrogates with energetic electrons, N2 excited species, OH and O radicals etc. Further optimization of the plasma tar destruction is still needed because the complexity of the tar component in a practical gasifier could decrease the tar conversions.

Abstract:Thermal plasma pyrolysis is a powerful technology for converting waste or low-value materials to valuable gaseous hydrocarbons. This paper presents for the first time the hydropyrolysis of n-hexane and toluene in a rotating-arc plasma reactor. Effects of the mole ratio of H/C in the feed, power input and magnetic induction were investigated to evaluate the reaction performance. A lower H/C ratio could lead to a lower yield of C2H2 and lower specific energy consumption, and there existed an optimum range of power input for both n-hexane and toluene pyrolysis within the investigated range. The yield of C2H2 in n-hexane and toluene pyrolysis could reach 85% and 68%, respectively, with respective specific energy consumption (SEC) of 13.8 kWh/kg·C2H2 and 19.9 kWh/kg·C2H2. Compared with the results reported in literature, the rotating-arc plasma process showed higher C2H2 yield and lower energy consumption, which is attributed to the better initial mixing of the reactant with the hot plasma gas and the more uniform temperature distribution.

Abstract:Toluene is chosen as a model tar compound and destroyed by a rotating gliding arc (RGA) discharge in simulated producer gas. A maximum toluene destruction efficiency of 95.6% is achieved. Meanwhile, the concentration of the useful components of synthesis gas (CO and H-2) is significantly enhanced compared to the initial producer gas, indicating that the RGA plasma has great potential for further and simultaneous application in tar cracking and producer gas upgrading.

Abstract:In this study,a novel rotating gliding arc(RGA)plasma co-driven by a magnetic field and a tangential gas flow was used for tar decomposition. Naphthalene in nitrogen flow was proposed as a tar surrogate. The effects of injection concentration,gas flow rate and preheating temperature on naphthalene degradation efficiency and gas production were investigated. In addition,liquid byproducts were characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC/MS). With the rise of the injection concentration,the degradation efficiency of naphthalene increased first,reaching a maximum value of 88.3% at 6mg/L,and then decreased. With the rise of gas flow rate from 2L/min to 12L/min,the degradation efficiency of naphthalene decreased continuously from 92.1% to 82.5%. Increasing the preheating temperature could promote the degradation of naphthalene. The results showed that the main gas products were H2and C2H2,with maximum selectivity of 44.0% and 13.7% respectively. The variation trend of the selectivity of H2and C2H2were consistent with that of naphthalene degradation efficiency. The major liquid byproducts were acetylene,indene and acenaphthylene,whose GC/MS peak areas were 2—3 orders of magnitude lower than that of naphthalene. On this basis,the reaction pathways and mechanisms of naphthalene decomposition in the plasma zone were preliminary proposed and discussed.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Non-thermal plasma is considered as an alternative treatment of tar present in the effluent from gasification processes. In this study, a novel rotating gliding arc (RGA) discharge reactor was developed for tar destruction. Toluene in nitrogen flow is used as a tar surrogate. The physical features of RGA discharge and its application to toluene destruction are investigated at different input concentrations and total gas flow rates. As a result, the highest destruction efficiency could exceed 95%, with a toluene concentration of 10 g/Nm 3 and a total flow rate of 0.24 Nm 3 /h. The two major gaseous products are H 2 and C 2 H 2 , with maximum selectivity of 39.35% and 27.0%, respectively. A higher input concentration slightly reduces this destruction efficiency but the energy efficiency further expanded, with a highest value of 16.61 g of toluene eliminated/kWh. In addition, the liquid and solid byproducts are collected downstream of the RGA reactor and determined qualitatively and semi-quantitatively. The amount and structure of these by-products is instructive for reaching a better comprehension of the chemical consequences of plasma treatment to the model compound and to the carrier gas nitrogen.

Abstract:In view of the worldwide concern about the depletion of fossil fuels and environmental problems associated with these sources, biomass is getting increased attention as a source of renewable energy and chemicals. Biomass gasification has a significant higher biomass to power efficiency than biomass combustion. However, gasification of biomass also produces significant amounts of heavy hydrocarbons (referred to as "tars") along with particulates. These tars will condense in downstream equipment, or deposit on active sites of catalysts, leading to loss of activity and the need for frequent regeneration. Hence it is necessary to remove the tars. Here we discuss the use of pulsed corona and plasma-catalysis as alternative methods for catalytic and thermal treatment. In both catalytic as well as thermal treatment processes, the fundamental mechanism involves creation and stabilizing of reactive species, which thereafter initiate the necessary reactions under kinetic and thermodynamic limitations. The same can be expected to occur in a non-thermal plasma, where similar species can be created by energetic electron-molecule collisions.

Abstract:In this study, partial oxidation of toluene as a biomass tar surrogate was carried out in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma reactor. In order to understand the reaction characteristics and thus potential of the approach, the effect of reaction temperature, O 2 /toluene molar ratio (OTR) and discharge power on performances was investigated by experiments and kinetic modeling. The results showed that the three factors could change the E/n and hence the G-values of species, as well as alter O 2 concentration in background gas and input energy, leading to the variation in active species production and thus, the performance. Appropriate high temperatures, as well as higher OTRs and discharge power obtained better performances by promoting toluene destruction and gas product production. Excited N 2 species play a crucial role in the process, by means of participating in reactions directly and strongly influencing on the production of secondary active species. At 300 °C, the highest toluene conversion of 100.0 % with an energy efficiency of 25.7 g/kWh was achieved without catalysts usage, a comparable performance as compared to the steam reforming by plasma catalysis, demonstrating the potential of this method for the purification of gasification gases. Furthermore, based on the rate of production (ROP) and sensitivity analyses of the model developed, as well as experimental results, the reaction mechanism was proposed.

Abstract:In this study, the steam reforming of naphthalene and pyrene as heavy tar model compounds was investigated experimentally in a horizontal tube reactor and theoretically using the CHEMKIN simulation. The experimental results revealed that the reactivity of naphthalene was higher than that of pyrene in the presence of steam. The carbon content converted to soot is a little more than that converted to light gas during tar steam reforming. The kinetic parameters of the overall reaction were determined, and the pre-exponential factor and activation energy were calculated using the experimental data. The comparison of the numerical simulation with the experimental findings exhibited an excellent agreement for the prediction of the light gas products and soot after eliminating the influence of the water–gas shift. Further, the reaction schemes including the reaction pathway and associated kinetics were determined for the steam reforming of these model compounds. Both naphthalene and pyrene exhibited a similar performance during the reaction in the presence of steam. Benzene and naphthalene, representing the precursors of the light gas product, were confirmed to be the dominant intermediate components of naphthalene and pyrene, respectively. The consecutive reactions of these intermediates subsequently resulted in the generation of the light gaseous products.

Abstract:The removal of tar is a main challenge for biomass gasification. In this paper, toluene was used as a tar model compound, and 6Ni, 4Ni2Cu and 4Ni2Fe were used as oxygen carriers (OCs). The chemical looping reforming (CLR) of toluene was studied at different temperatures and different steam/carbon molar ratios (S/C). Experimental results showed that the metal OC plays a dual-function of oxidation-catalysis for CLR of toluene. When using 6Ni, 4Ni2Cu and 4Ni2Fe as OC, the toluene conversions were 93.07%, 87.18% and 94.44%, respectively, at the S/C of 2.0 and the reaction temperature of 900 °C, and the syngas yields were 3.19 Nm3/kg, 3.10 Nm3/kg and 3.26 Nm3/kg, respectively. Meanwhile, 4Ni2Fe has the best carbon deposition resistance among the three OCs. The stable performance of 4Ni2Fe with high reactivity was demonstrated during 10 cyclic experiments with the temperature of 900 °C and at the S/C of 2.0. After 10 cycles, SEM-EDX and XRD results indicated that the 4Ni2Fe has satisfactory stability and regeneration performance. These results fully demonstrate that, among the three OCs, the 4Ni2Fe is the most ideal OC in the CLR of toluene.

Abstract:The properties of pyrolysis and combustion of five tars, which are produced from the gasification of five sewage sludges in the external heated downdraft reactor under the gasification temperature of 800 °C and the air flow rate of 0.05 m3/h, were studied by thermal gravimetric analysis with a heating rate of 10 °C/min in the atmosphere of nitrogen and air, respectively. The results indicate that the thermal processes of five tars in the two atmospheres can be divided into two stages. The releasing of light organic matters happens in the first stage, and there also exists the decomposition reaction during pyrolysis. The second stage is the decomposition or combustion stage of the remaining heavy organic matters for the pyrolysis or combustion. The reaction mechanisms in the two atmospheres have been studied with Coats-Redfern equation. It shows that the mechanisms of five tars in the same atmosphere are different.

Abstract:Abstract A coupled plasma-catalytic system (CPCS) for the conversion of toluene was investigated and compared to the homogeneous system of gliding discharge plasma. Toluene was used as a model compound, which is present in tars. The study was carried out at atmospheric pressure, in a gas composition similar to the one obtained during pyrolysis of biomass. The effect of the initial toluene concentration, energy supplied to gliding discharge (GD) and the presence of a catalyst on the conversion of toluene was studied. Both the composition of outlet gas and its calorific value were monitored. Based on the obtained results it can be concluded that the conversion of toluene increases with the increase of gliding discharge power. The highest toluene conversion (89%) was received in the coupled plasma-catalytic system (catalyst: RANG-19PR) under the following conditions: CO (0.13 mol. fr.), CO 2 (0.12 mol. fr.), H 2 (0.25 mol. fr.), N 2 (0.50 mol. fr.) and 4400 ppm of toluene with a gas flow rate of 1000 Nl/h. The composition of the outlet gas in the homogeneous system and in the CPCS changed in the range of a few percents. Toluene levels were reduced tenfold. Benzene, C3 and C4 hydrocarbons, as well as acetylene, ethylene and ethane, were detected in the outlet stream in trace amounts. Carbon deposits were present in the reactor. The products of methanation of carbon oxides were detected in the both studied systems. A mechanism of toluene decomposition in the CPCS was proposed. The application of the catalyst brought about an increase in the calorific value of the outlet gas. It was above the minimal level demanded by engines and turbines.

Abstract:The thermochemical conversion of biomass via gasification offers a promising approach to producing fungible substitutes for petroleum-derived fuels and chemicals. The kinetic study of the gas-phase reactions of biomass gasification is key to understanding fluidized bed biomass gasification (FBBG). Under typical operating conditions for air-blown FBBG (700-1000 degrees C), tars exist in the product gas in significant quantities (250 g/Nm(3)). Predicting the formation and evolution of tars in a FBBG reactor model is particularly important as they introduce several operational and cleanup challenges in practice. However, such predictions require implementation of detailed chemical kinetic mechanisms due to the large number of species and competing conversion pathways involved. A detailed gas-phase mechanism has been proposed by the CRECK modeling group at Politecnico di Milano encompassing the secondary pyrolysis, cracking, and oxidation reactions of the devolatilization species of biomass, as well as the oxidation and combustion reactions of the resultant gas-phase hydrocarbon species. In this work, a one-dimensional reactor network model (RNM) of an air-blown fluidized bed gasifier utilizing this detailed chemistry model is developed and validated for the prediction of major gas-phase species and tar compounds. It is found that this RNM is able to accurately predict the syn-gas production and total tar concentration given a modification of water gas shift and/or CO oxidation kinetics to account for catalytic effects of the biomass ash and char. Additionally, validation of the predicted tar composition is attempted against available experimental measurements. Good agreement is achieved for single-ring aromatic and oxygenated tar compounds, while it is found that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are underpredicted by more than an order of magnitude. Finally, the conversion pathways of representative devolatilization products of biomasslevoglucosan, xylofuranose, and p-coumarylare analyzed in the context of syn-gas and tar formation routes.

Abstract:An experimental and kinetic study of NOx reduction by reburning using syngas from updraft biomass gasification has been carried out in this paper. A 10 kW updraft gasifier close-coupled to a 20 kW entrained flow combustion reactor was the experimental system. Experiments were carried out in a temperature range of 1000–1200 °C, and the stoichiometric ratio in the reburn zone (SR2) was in the range of 0.6–1.0. Phenol (C6H5OH) was selected as a model compound for tar according to GC-MS analysis of gasification tar components. Experimental results of NO reduction by syngas with tar revealed that NO reduction efficiency of approximately 85% could be achieved at SR2 = 0.7 and reactor wall temperature = 1200 °C. In order to model the syngas reburning process with tar, a kinetic mechanism which consisted of 22 global reactions concerning tar conversion and NO reduction was set up and implemented in a two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program to simulate the NO reduction effect. The modeling results are discussed and compared with experimental data. It is shown that the combustion and reburning process can be reasonably modeled with the kinetic mechanism under the experimental conditions, and the effect of tar on NO reduction should not be neglected in the syngas reburning process, especially when the tar content is high.
