Abstract:Sequential effect algebra is an important model for studying quantum measurement theory. In 2005, Professor Gudder presented 25 open problems to motivate its study. The 20th problem asked: In a sequential effect algebra, if the square root of some element exists, is it unique ? We can strengthen the problem as following: For each given positive integer n > 1, is there a sequential effect algebra such that the n-th root of its some element c is not unique and the n-th root of c is not the k-th root of c (k < n) ? In this paper, we answer the strengthened problem affirmatively.

Abstract:Let $ q $ be a sufficiently large odd integer, and let $ c \in\left(1, \frac{4}{3}\right) $. We denote $ R(c; q) $ as the count of square-free numbers in the intersection of the Lehmer set and the Piatetski-Shapiro sequence. By employing additive character properties to transform congruence equations and applying Kloosterman sums and methods of exponential sums, we derive a sharp asymptotic formula as $ q $ approaches infinity, which is significant for understanding the distribution properties of the Lehmer problem.

Abstract:An upper bound is established for certain exponential sums on the rational points of an elliptic curve over a residue class ring $\mathbb{Z}_N$, N=pq for two distinct odd primes p and q. The result is a generalization of an estimate of exponential sums on rational point groups of elliptic curves over finite fields. The bound is applied to showing the pseudorandomness of a large family of binary sequences constructed by using elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Z}_N$.
Beatty Sequences for a Quadratic Irrational: Decidability and Applications

Abstract:Let $\alpha$ and $\beta$ belong to the same quadratic field. We show that the inhomogeneous Beatty sequence $(\lfloor n \alpha + \beta \rfloor)_{n \geq 1}$ is synchronized, in the sense that there is a finite automaton that takes as input the Ostrowski representations of $n$ and $y$ in parallel, and accepts if and only if $y = \lfloor n \alpha + \beta \rfloor$. Since it is already known that the addition relation is computable for Ostrowski representations based on a quadratic number, a consequence is a new and rather simple proof that the first-order logical theory of these sequences with addition is decidable. The decision procedure is easily implemented in the free software Walnut.

A recurrence relation for elliptic divisibility sequences

Abstract:In literature, there are two different definitions of elliptic divisibility sequences. The first one says that a sequence of integers $\{h_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ is an elliptic divisibility sequence if it verifies the recurrence relation $h_{m+n}h_{m-n}h_{r}^2=h_{m+r}h_{m-r}h_{n}^2-h_{n+r}h_{n-r}h_{m}^2$ for every natural number $m\geq n\geq r$. The second definition says that a sequence of integers $\{\beta_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ is an elliptic divisibility sequence if it is the sequence of the square roots (chosen with an appropriate sign) of the denominators of the abscissas of the iterates of a point on a rational elliptic curve. It is well-known that the two sequences are not equivalent. Hence, given a sequence of the denominators $\{\beta_n\}_{n\geq 0}$, in general does not hold $\beta_{m+n}\beta_{m-n}\beta_{r}^2=\beta_{m+r}\beta_{m-r}\beta_{n}^2-\beta_{n+r}\beta_{n-r}\beta_{m}^2$ for $m\geq n\geq r$. We will prove that the recurrence relation above holds for $\{\beta_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ under some conditions on the indexes $m$, $n$, and $r$.

On Frobenius Formulas of Power Sequences

Abstract:Let $A=(a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_n)$ be a sequence of relative prime integers, each greater than or equal to 2. The Frobenius number $g(A)$ represents the largest integer that cannot be expressed as a nonnegative linear combination of the elements in $A$. Our recent work has introduced a combinatorial method for calculating $g(A)$ in the specific form $A=(a, a+B)=(a, a+b_1, \ldots, a+b_k)$. This method reduces the problem to a simpler optimization problem, denoted as $O_B(M)$. In this paper, we apply this method to solve the open problem of characterizing $g(A)$ for the square sequence $A=(a,a+1,a+2^2,\ldots, a+k^2)$. We demonstrate that the Frobenius number $g(a, a+1^2, a+2^2, \ldots)$ for the infinite square sequence admits a simpler solution. This is because the corresponding optimization problem, $O_B(M)$, can be solved by applying number-theoretic principles, specifically Lagrange's Four-Square Theorem and related results. Consequently, we are able to resolve the open problem by utilizing Lagrange's Four-Square Theorem in conjunction with generating functions.

Abstract:Recently, a class of nonlinear sequences, modular reductions of primitive sequences over integer residue rings, was proposed and has attracted much attention. In particular, modulo 2 reductions of primitive sequences over $\mathbf {Z}/(2^{31}-1)$ were used in the ZUC algorithm. In this paper, we study the distribution properties of modulo 2 reductions of primitive sequences over $\mathbf {Z}/(M)$, where M is a square-free odd integer. Let $\underline{a}$ be a primitive sequence of order n over $\mathbf {Z}/(M)$ with period T and $\left[ \underline{a}\right] _{\text {mod}\, 2}$ the modulo 2 reduction of $\underline{a}$. With the estimate of exponential sums over $\mathbf {Z}/(M)$, the proportion $f_{s}$ of occurrences of s within a segment of $\left[ \underline{a}\right] _{\text {mod}\, 2}$ of length $\mu T$ is estimated, where $s\in \left\{ 0,1\right\} $ and $0<\mu \le 1$. Based on this estimate, it is further shown that for given M and $\mu $, $f_{s}$ tends to $\frac{M+1-2s}{2M}$ as $n\rightarrow \infty $. This result implies that there exists a small imbalance between 0 and 1 in $\left[ \underline{a}\right] _{\text {mod}\, 2}$, which should be taken into full consideration in the design of stream ciphers based on $\left[ \underline{a}\right] _{\text {mod}\, 2}$.

Abstract:This article investigates integer sequences that partition the sequence into blocks of various lengths - irregular arrays. The main result of the article is explicit formulas for numbering of irregular arrays. A generalization of Cantor diagonal method is proposed. We also define and describe intra-block permutations of natural numbers. Generalizations of reluctant sequences are introduced, namely generalized reluctant sequences and generalized reverse reluctant sequences. Explicit formulas are presented for these sequences. The article provides numerous examples to illustrate all statements.

Abstract:We make many new observations on primitive roots modulo primes.For an odd prime p and an integer c,we establish a theorem concerning ∑g(g+c/p),where g runs over all the primitive roots modulo p among 1,…,p-1,and (·/p) denotes the Legendre symbol.On the basis of our numerical computations,we formulate 35 conjectures involving primitive roots modulo primes.For example,we conjecture that for any prime p there is a primitive root g ＜ p modulo p with g-1 a square,and that for any prime p ＞ 3 there is a prime q ＜ p with the Bernoulli number Bq-1 a primitive root modulo p.We also make related observations on quadratic nonresidues modulo primes and primitive prime divisors of some combinatorial sequences.For example,based on heuristic arguments we conjecture that for any prime p ＞ 3 there exists a Fibonacci number Fk ＜ p/2 which is a quadratic nonresidue modulo p;this implies that there is a deterministic polynomial time algorithm to find square roots of quadratic residues modulo a prime p ＞ 3.

Abstract:The equidistribution of roots of quadratic congruences with prime moduli depends crucially upon effective bounds for special Weyl linear forms. Duke, Friedlander and Iwaniec discovered strong estimates for these Weyl linear forms when the quadratic polynomial has negative discriminant. Tóth proved analogous but weaker bounds when the quadratic polynomial has positive discriminant. We establish strong estimates for these Weyl linear forms for quadratics of positive discriminants. As an application of our bounds, we derive a quantitative uniform distribution of modular square roots with integer moduli in an arithmetic progression.

Abstract:For coprime positive integers $a, b, c$, where $a+b=c$, $\gcd(a,b,c)=1$ and $1\leq a < b$, the famous $abc$ conjecture (Masser and Oesterlè, 1985) states that for $\varepsilon > 0$, only finitely many $abc$ triples satisfy $c > R(abc)^{1+\varepsilon}$, where $R(n)$ denotes the radical of $n$. We examine the patterns in squarefree factors of binary additive partitions of positive integers to elucidate the claim of the conjecture. With $abc$ hit referring to any $(a, b, c)$ triple satisfying $R(abc)<c$, we show an algorithm to generate hits forming infinite sequences within sets of equivalence classes of positive integers. Integer patterns in such sequences of hits are heuristically consistent with the claim of the conjecture.
