Abstract:Define an integer to be $[y',y]$-smooth if all of its prime factors belong to the interval $[y',y]$. We identify suitable weights $g_{[y',y]}(n)$ for the characteristic function of $[y',y]$-smooth numbers that allow us to establish strong asymptotic results on their distribution in short arithmetic progressions. Building on these equidistribution properties, we show that (a $W$-tricked version of) the function $g_{[y',y]}(n) - 1$ is orthogonal to nilsequences. Removing small prime factors $p<y'$ and studying $[y',y]$-smooth numbers instead of $y$-smooth numbers is integral to obtaining equidistribution in short arithmetic progressions when $y$ is small. Our results apply in the almost optimal range $(\log N)^{K} < y \leq N$ of the smoothness parameter $y$, where $K \geq 2$ is sufficiently large and for $y'<y^2$ of the shape $y' = (\log N)^{K'}$. As an application, we establish for any $y> N^{1/\sqrt{\log_9 N}}$ asymptotic results on the number of solutions in $[y',y]$-smooth numbers to arbitrary finite complexity systems of linear equations in the integers below $N$.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the relationship of $y$-smooth integers and de Bruijn's approximation $\Lambda(x,y)$. Under the Riemann hypothesis, Saias proved that the count of $y$-smooth integers up to $x$, $\Psi(x,y)$, is asymptotic to $\Lambda(x,y)$ when $y \ge (\log x)^{2+\varepsilon}$. We extend the range to $y \ge (\log x)^{3/2+\varepsilon}$ by introducing a correction factor that takes into account the contributions of zeta zeros and prime powers. We use this correction term to uncover a lower order term in the asymptotics of $\Psi(x,y)/\Lambda(x,y)$. The term relates to the error term in the prime number theorem, and implies that large positive (resp. negative) values of $\sum_{n \le y} \Lambda(n)-y$ lead to large positive (resp. negative) values of $\Psi(x,y)-\Lambda(x,y)$, and vice versa. Under the Linear Independence hypothesis, we show a Chebyshev's bias in $\Psi(x,y)-\Lambda(x,y)$.

Abstract:Let $\alpha$ and $\beta$ belong to the same quadratic field. We show that the inhomogeneous Beatty sequence $(\lfloor n \alpha + \beta \rfloor)_{n \geq 1}$ is synchronized, in the sense that there is a finite automaton that takes as input the Ostrowski representations of $n$ and $y$ in parallel, and accepts if and only if $y = \lfloor n \alpha + \beta \rfloor$. Since it is already known that the addition relation is computable for Ostrowski representations based on a quadratic number, a consequence is a new and rather simple proof that the first-order logical theory of these sequences with addition is decidable. The decision procedure is easily implemented in the free software Walnut.

Abstract:We indicate that given an integer coordinate point on an elliptic curve y^2+axy+by=x^3+cx^2+dx+e we can identify an integer sequence whose Hankel transform is a Somos-4 sequence, and whose Hankel determinants can be used to determine the coordinates of the multiples of this point. In reverse, given the coordinates of the multiples of an integer point on such an elliptic curve, we conjecture the form of a continued fraction generating function that expands to give a sequence with the above properties.

Abstract:International Journal of Number Theory, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we present a smooth version of Landau's explicit formula for the von Mangoldt arithmetical function. By assuming the validity of the Riemann hypothesis, we show that in order to determine whether a natural number [math] is a prime number, it is sufficient to know the location of a number of nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function of order [math]. Next we use Heisenberg's inequality to support the conjecture that this number of zeros cannot be essentially diminished.

Abstract:We obtain best possible results for the number of coprime positive integer solutions, along with some effectivity, of the equation in the title when $a$ is a positive integer, $b=p^{m}$ or $b=4p^{m}$ where $m$ is a non-negative integer, $p$ is prime and $x^{2}- \left( a^{2}+b \right) y^{2}=-4$ has an integer solution. We prove our results by bounding the number of distinct squares in certain binary recurrence sequences, including those associated with such equations.

Abstract:We study the counts of smooth permutations and smooth polynomials over finite fields. For both counts we prove an estimate with an error term that matches the error term found in the integer setting by de Bruijn more than 70 years ago. The main term is the usual Dickman $\rho$ function, but with its argument shifted. We determine the order of magnitude of $\log(p_{n,m}/\rho(n/m))$ where $p_{n,m}$ is the probability that a permutation on $n$ elements, chosen uniformly at random, is $m$-smooth. We uncover a phase transition in the polynomial setting: the probability that a polynomial of degree $n$ in $\mathbb{F}_q$ is $m$-smooth changes its behavior at $m\approx (3/2)\log_q n$.

Abstract:For $x\ge y>1$ and $u:= \log x/\log y$, let $\Phi(x,y)$ denote the number of positive integers up to $x$ free of prime divisors less than or equal to $y$. In 1950 de Bruijn [1] studied the approximation of $\Phi(x,y)$ by the quantity \[\mu_y(u)e^{\gamma}x\log y\prod_{p\leq y}\left(1-\frac{1}{p}\right),\] where $\gamma=0.5772156...$ is Euler's constant and \[\mu_y(u):=\int_{1}^{u}y^{t-u}\omega(t)\,dt.\] He showed that the asymptotic formula \[\Phi(x,y)=\mu_y(u)e^{\gamma}x\log y\prod_{p\leq y}\left(1-\frac{1}{p}\right)+O\left(\frac{xR(y)}{\log y}\right)\] holds uniformly for all $x\ge y\ge2$, where $R(y)$ is a positive decreasing function related to the error estimates in the Prime Number Theorem. In this paper we obtain numerically explicit versions of de Bruijn's result.

Abstract:We provide a new upper bound for the number of smooth values of a polynomial with integer coefficients. This improves Timofeev's previous result unless the polynomial is a product of linear polynomials with integer coefficients. As an application, we fix an error in the proof of a result of Cassels which was used to prove that the Hurwitz zeta-function with algebraic irrational parameter has infinitely many zeros on the domain of convergence. We also apply the main result to a problem on primitive divisors of quadratic polynomials.

In the Art of Computer Programming, vol. 3, Don Knuth derived the O(1/n) asymptotic formula for these numbers. In this modest tribute to our two heroes, Neil Sloane who just turned 85, and Don Knuth who was 85 a year ago, we go all the way to an $O(1/n^{85})$ asymptotic formula.

Abstract:We consider infinite sequences of positive numbers. The connection between log-concavity and the Bessenrodt--Ono inequality had been in the focus of several papers. This has applications in the white noise distribution theory and combinatorics. We improve a recent result of Benfield and Roy and show that for the sequence of partition numbers $\{p(n)\}$ Nicolas' log-concavity result implies the result of Bessenrodt and Ono towards $p(n) \, p(m) > p(n+m)$.

Abstract:Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis for the zeros of the Dirichlet $L$-functions with characters modulo $q$, we obtain a smoothed version of the average number of Goldbach representations for numbers which are multiples of a positive integer $q$. Such an average was first considered by Granville \cite{Gran07,Gran08} but without any smoothing factor. In this short article, we also show how the smoothing can be removed.
