Abstract:This paper presents geometric proofs for the irrationality of square roots of select integers, extending classical approaches. Building on known geometric methods for proving the irrationality of sqrt(2), the authors explore whether similar techniques can be applied to other non-square integers. They begin by reviewing well-known results, such as Euclid's proof for the irrationality of sqrt(2), and discuss subsequent geometric extensions for sqrt(3), sqrt(5), and sqrt(6). The authors then introduce new geometric constructions, particularly using hexagons, to prove the irrationality of sqrt(6). Furthermore, the paper investigates the limitations and challenges of extending these geometric methods to triangular numbers. Through detailed geometric reasoning, the authors successfully generalize the approach to several square-free numbers and identify cases where the method breaks down. Abstract:A folklore proof of Euclid's theorem on the infinitude of primes uses the Euler product and the irrationality of $\zeta(2) = \pi^2/6$. A quantified form of Euclid's Theorem is Bertrand's postulate $p_{n+1} < 2p_n$. By quantifying the folklore proof using an irrationality measure for $6/\pi^2$, we give a proof (communicated to Paulo Ribenboim in 2005) of a much weaker upper bound on $p_{n+1}$.

Abstract:We investigate the topological structure of the decimal expansions of the three famous naturally occurring irrational numbers, $\pi$, $e$, and golden ratio, by explicitly calculating the diversity of the pair distributions of the ten digits ranging from 0 to 9. And we find that there is a universal two-phase behavior, which collapses into a single curve with a power law phenomenon. We further reveal that the two-phase behavior is closely related to general aspects of phase transitions in physical systems. It is then numerically shown that such characteristics originate from an intrinsic property of genuine random distribution of the digits in decimal expansions. Thus, mathematical irrational numbers are not so physically irrational as long as they have such an intrinsic property.
A note on the Irrationality of $ζ(5)$ and Higher Odd Zeta Values

Abstract:In this note, we prove the irrationality of $\zeta(5)$ and generalise the method to prove irrationality of higher odd zeta values. Our proof relies on the method of contradiction, existence of solution of Linear Diophantine equation and mathematical induction. For $n\geq 1$, we denote $d_n=\text{lcm}(1,2,...,n)$. In the first part of the article, we assume $\zeta(5)$ is rational, say $a/b$. Then we observe that for $n\geq b$, there exists an equation involving linear combination of $\zeta(5)$ with coefficients $d_n$ that has a solution. Later using existence of solution of Linear Diophantine equation, we show that such a linear combination of $\zeta(5)$ has no solution, which is a contradiction. In the second part of the article, we generalise this method for all higher odd zeta values.

Abstract:In this note we show how the irrationality measure of $\zeta(s) = \pi^2/6$ can be used to obtain explicit lower bounds for $\pi(x)$. We analyze the key ingredients of the proof of the finiteness of the irrationality measure, and show how to obtain good lower bounds for $\pi(x)$ from these arguments as well. While versions of some of the results here have been done by other authors, our arguments are more elementary and yield a lower bound of order $x/\log x$ as a natural boundary.

Abstract:In this paper we mainly study sums of four rational squares with certain restrictions. Let Q≥0 be the set of nonnegative rational numbers. We establish the following four-square theorem for rational numbers: For any a, b, c, d ∈ Q≥0, each r ∈ Q≥0 can be written as x 2 + y+z+w with x, y, z, w ∈ Q≥0 such that ax+by+cz+dw is a rational square (or a rational cube). This paper also contains many conjectures; for example, for any positive integers a and b with gcd(a, b) = 1, we conjecture that each r ∈ Q≥0 can be written as aw + bx +y+ z with w, x, y, z ∈ Q.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract:One of the greatest achievements of Greek mathematics is the proof that the square root of 2 is irrational. It has not been thought that the Babylonians appreciated the concept of irrationality and certainly that they did not prove that the square root of two is irrational. Here we show that two Babylonian geometry problem tablets contain a simple proof of the irrationality of the square root of two. It is not known, as yet, if the Babylonians appreciated that these tablets indeed contained this proof.

Abstract:AbstractWe prove that, for any small $\varepsilon > 0$, the number of irrationals among the following odd zeta values: $\zeta (3),\zeta (5),\zeta (7),\ldots ,\zeta (s)$ is at least $( c_0 - \varepsilon )({s^{1/2}}/{(\log s)^{1/2}})$, provided $s$ is a sufficiently large odd integer with respect to $\varepsilon$. The constant $c_0 = 1.192507\ldots$ can be expressed in closed form. Our work improves the lower bound $2^{(1-\varepsilon )({\log s}/{\log \log s})}$ of the previous work of Fischler, Sprang and Zudilin. We follow the same strategy of Fischler, Sprang and Zudilin. The main new ingredient is an asymptotically optimal design for the zeros of the auxiliary rational functions, which relates to the inverse totient problem.
Integers expressible as the sum of two rational cubes

Abstract:We prove that a positive proportion of integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not so expressible, thus proving a conjecture of Davenport. More generally, we prove that a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family have rank 0, and a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves with good reduction at 2 in any cubic twist family have rank 1. Our method involves proving that the average size of the 2-Selmer group of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family, having any given root number, is 3. We accomplish this by generalizing a parametrization, due to the second author and Ho, of elliptic curves with extra structure by pairs of binary cubic forms. We then use a novel combination of geometry-of-numbers methods and the circle method that builds on earlier work of Ruth and the first author. In particular, we make use of a new interpretation of the singular integral and series arising in the circle method in terms of real and $p$-adic Haar measures on the relevant group. We prove a uniformity estimate for integral points on the relevant quadric, which along with a sieve allows us to prove that the average size of the 2-Selmer group over the cubic twist family is 3. By suitably partitioning the subset of curves in the family with given root number, we effect a further sieve to show that the root number is equidistributed and that the same average, now taken over only those curves of given root number, is again 3. Finally, we apply the $p$-parity theorem of Dokchitser-Dokchitser and a $p$-converse theorem of Burungale-Skinner to conclude. We also prove the analogue of the above results for the sequence of square numbers: namely, we prove that a positive proportion of square integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not.

Many $p$-adic odd zeta values are irrational

Abstract:For any prime $p$ and $\varepsilon>0$ we prove that for any sufficiently large positive odd integer $s$ at least $(c_p-\varepsilon) \sqrt{\frac{s}{\log s}}$ of the $p$-adic zeta values $\zeta_p(3),\zeta_p(5),\dots,\zeta_p(s)$ are irrational. The constant $c_p$ is positive and does only depend on $p$. This result establishes a $p$-adic version of the elimination technique used by Fischler--Sprang--Zudilin and Lai--Yu to prove a similar result on classical zeta values. The main difficulty consists in proving the non-vanishing of the resulting linear forms. We overcome this problem by using a new irrationality criterion.

Abstract:Ivan Niven's succinct proof that pi is irrational is easy to verify, but it begins with a magical formula that appears to come out of nowhere, and whose origin remains mysterious even after one goes through the proof. The goal of this expository paper is to describe a thought process by which a mathematician might come up with the proof from scratch, without having to be a genius. Compared to previous expositions of Niven's proof, perhaps the main novelty in the present account is an explicit appeal to the theory of orthogonal polynomials, which leads naturally to the consideration of certain integrals whose relevance is otherwise not immediately obvious.
