Abstract:The rapid advancement of technology enables the design and manufacture of increasingly smaller devices down to atomic scales. Therefore, characterization of materials at micro- and nanoscales is of critical importance. The aim of this study is to compare the deformations, hardness, and elasticity modulus values obtained from indentation experiments using a Berkovich-type tip with a nano-tester and the MD simulation methods, and to evaluate the accuracy of these results. It was observed that the heterogeneous distribution of silicon and the presence of Mg, Fe and Ag during casting adversely affected the Pmax/hmax, pop-in, pop-out, hardness and elasticity modulus values. It was observed that elasticity modulus values calculated in the MD simulation experiments were in close agreement with the results of the experiments performed with the nano-test device, the elasticity modulus values ranged between 48.08 and 91.72 GPa as a result of the MD simulation experiments, while the results of the experiments performed with the nano-test device ranged between 34.15 and 85.01 GPa. In Al-10%Si alloys, it was observed that expansion started with the decrease in the number of dislocations. MD simulations showed that dislocations occurred at each indentation step in Al-%5Si to Al-%15Si alloys, while no permanent dislocation was observed in Al-%20Si. It was observed that in this study elasticity modulus values calculated from MD simulations are consistent with the literature values and this method is a fast, cost-effective and reliable approach for the determination of elasticity modulus in metal alloys.
