Abstract:The response of NO emission at 5.3 μm in the thermosphere to the geomagnetic storm on 24 April 2023 is analyzed using TIMED/SABER observations and TIEGCM simulations. Both the observations and the simulations indicate a significant enhancement in NO emission during the storm. Observations show two peaks around 50°S/N in the altitude–latitude distribution of NO emission and its relative variation. Additionally, the peak emission and enhancement are stronger on the nightside compared with the dayside. The peak altitude in the Northern Hemisphere is approximately 2–10 km higher than in the Southern Hemisphere; meanwhile, the peak altitude on the dayside is approximately 2–8 km higher than that on the nightside. Simulations reveal three peaks around 50°S, the equator, and 65°N, with peak altitudes at higher latitudes being slightly lower than those observed. In general, the altitude–latitude distribution structure of the relative variation in simulated NO emission matches observations, with two peaks around 50°S/N. TIEGCM simulations suggest that the increase in NO density and temperature during a geomagnetic storm can lead to an increase in NO emission at most altitudes and latitudes. Furthermore, the significant enhancement around 50°S/N is mainly attributed to the changes in NO density.

Ionospheric Response to the Initial Phase of Geomagnetic Storms: Common Features

Abstract:Ionospheric responses to the initial phases of three geomagnetic storms: 2–5 April 2004, 7–9 November 2004, and 13–16 December 2006, were compared using both ground‐based GPS total electron content (TEC) data and coupled magnetosphere ionosphere thermosphere (CMIT) model simulations. The onset times for these storms all occurred at local daytime in the North American sector. This similarity of onset times and other factors resulted in some common features in their ionospheric response. These common features include (1) enhanced TEC (positive response) at low and middle latitudes in the daytime, (2) depleted TEC (negative response) around the geomagnetic equator in the daytime, (3) a north‐south asymmetry in the positive response as the northern hemispheric response appeared to be more pronounced, and (4) negative response at high latitudes as the storms progressed. The CMIT model captured most of these features. Analysis of model results showed that storm‐time enhancements in the daytime eastward electric field were the primary cause of the observed positive storm effects at low and middle latitudes as well as the negative response around the geomagnetic equator in the daytime. These eastward electric field enhancements were caused by the penetration of high latitude electric fields to low latitudes during southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) periods, when IMF Bz oscillated between southward and northward direction in the initial, shock phase of the storms. Consequently, the ionosphere was lifted up at low and middle latitudes to heights where recombination was weak allowing the plasma to exist for a long period resulting in higher densities. In addition, the CMIT model showed that high‐latitude negative storm responses were related to the enhancements of molecular nitrogen seen in TIMED/Global Ultraviolet Imager observations, whereas the negative storm effects around the geomagnetic equator were not associated with thermospheric composition changes; they were the result of plasma transport processes.

Abstract:The ionospheric equivalent currents in the high latitudes and the auroral electrojet system during the geomagnetic storm on July 15–16, 2000 are analyzed by using geomagnetic data from IMAGE chain. The large-scale vortices of equivalent currents are observed in the storm. The vortices on the dusk side of ionosphere correspond to four-celled pattern of plasma convection associated with NBZ, region I and region II field-aligned currents. Only one vortex can be found on the dawn side of ionosphere after interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) turns southward. In the initial phase of the storm, the center of eastward electrojets tends to shift equatorward. It arrives at 58.62° latitude of corrected geomagnetic coordinates (CGM). The westward electrojets are strong in the main phase. The center of westward electrojets in this period moves equatorward and may be beyond the southernmost station (56.45°) of the chain.

Abstract:Interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) and the driven geomagnetic storms have a profound influence on the ionosphere, potentially leading to a degradation in positioning performance. In this study, we made a comprehensive analysis of the entire process of the impact of a typical ICME and its driven geomagnetic storm on the low-latitude ionosphere during March 13–14, 2022 (π-day storm) and the positioning performance of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). During the passage of the ICME event, significant ionospheric scintillation, and TEC (total electron content) disturbances were observed in the low-latitude Hong Kong region. The ICME sheath region intensively compressed the magnetosphere via solar wind dynamic pressure enhancement and subsequently drove the storm main phase. It is found that both the magnetospheric compression that formed the storm initial phase and the storm main phase caused ionospheric scintillation. In comparison, the intensity of the ionospheric scintillation caused by the intense magnetospheric compression just before the storm main phase is even more pronounced. We also analyzed the impact of storms on standard point positioning (SPP), precise point positioning (PPP) and real-time kinematic (RTK) techniques. The positioning accuracies of single-frequency SPP and PPP experienced the most severe decline, and there was a noticeable increase in the initialization time for dual-frequency static PPP and RTK during the event. RTK demonstrated a shorter convergence time and higher accuracy during this event, but it was limited to short-baseline RTK (<30 km).

Abstract:This study investigates the responses of the equatorial and low-latitude ionosphere in the American–Atlantic longitude sector during the super geomagnetic storm that occurred on 10–11 May 2024. The investigation utilizes multi-instrument datasets, including ground-based observations (GNSS TEC, ionosonde, and Fabry–Perot interferometer) as well as space-borne satellite measurements (GOLD, Swarm, DMSP, and TIMED). Our findings reveal significant day-to-day variations in the storm-time equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA), summarized as follows: (1) During the main phase of the storm, the low- and mid-latitude ionosphere experienced a positive storm, with TEC drastically enhanced by 50–100% within a few hours. The EIA crests exhibited a substantial poleward expansion, reaching as high as ±35° MLAT. This expansion was caused by the enhanced fountain effect driven by penetration electric fields, along with increased ambipolar diffusion due to transient meridional wind surges. (2) During the recovery phase of the storm, the global ionosphere was characterized by a substantial negative storm with a 50–80% depletion in TEC. The EIA crests were notably suppressed and merged into a single equatorial band, which can be attributed to the composition change effect and the influence of disturbance dynamo electric fields. These results illustrate the complex processes of magnetosphere–ionosphere–thermosphere coupling during a superstorm, highlighting the significant impacts of space weather on the global ionosphere.

Abstract:We have examined the response of ionospheric electric field to the ICME sheath with the coordinated ground- and space-based magnetic measurements during the initial phase of December 14, 2006 storm. The duskward IEF pulses enhanced the westward convection electrojet and the eastward equatorial ionospheric electric field. The in situ magnetic measurements in the vicinity of geosynchronous orbit suggested that the Earth’s magnetosphere was continuously compressed on the dayside and stretched to more tail-like on the nightside, due to the sustained high solar wind dynamic pressure in the sheath region. The compression prevented shielding current from increasing and then caused electric field penetration.

Abstract:This work investigates the ionospheric response to the March 2023 geomagnetic storm over American and Asian sectors from total electron content (TEC), rate of TEC index, ionospheric heights, Swarm plasma density, radio occultation profiles of Formosat-7/Cosmic-2 (F7/C2), Fabry-Perot interferometer driven neutral winds, and E region electric field. During the storm's main phase, post-sunset equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) extend to higher latitudes in the western American longitudes, showing significant longitudinal differences in the American sector. Over the Indian longitudes, suppression of post-sunset irregularities is observed, attributed to the westward prompt penetration electric field (PPEF). At the early recovery phase, the presence of post-midnight/near-sunrise EPBs till post-sunrise hours in the American sector is associated with the disturbance of dynamo-electric fields (DDEF). Additionally, a strong consistency between F7/C2 derived amplitude scintillation (S4) ≥ 0.5 and EPB occurrences is observed. Furthermore, a strong eastward electric field induced an increase in daytime TEC beyond the equatorial ionization anomaly crest in the American region, which occurred during the storm's main phase. Both the Asian and American sectors exhibit negative ionospheric storms and inhibition of ionospheric irregularities at the recovery phase, which is dominated by the disturbance dynamo effect due to equatorward neutral winds. A slight increase in TEC in the Asian sector during the recovery phase could be explained by the combined effect of DDEF and thermospheric composition change. Overall, storm-time ionospheric variations are controlled by the combined effects of PPEF and DDEF. This study may further contribute to understanding the ionospheric responses under the influence of storm-phase and LT-dependent electric fields.

Persistence of the Long‐Duration Daytime TEC Enhancements at Different Longitudinal Sectors During the August 2018 Geomagnetic Storm

Abstract:In this study, the ionospheric responses in the Asian‐Australian, American, and African sectors during the August 2018 geomagnetic storm were investigated based on the Beidou geostationary orbit (GEO) satellite and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Madrigal total electron contents (TECs), combined with measurements from ionosondes, magnetometers, and Global Ultraviolet Imager (GUVI). The middle‐ and low‐latitude TECs were dominated by positive responses over the three longitudinal sectors during the storm on 26–29 August. It is unique that daytime TECs at the Asian‐Australian, American, and African sectors displayed large enhancements larger than 10 TEC units (TECu) on 27–29 August, during the recovery phase, when the ionosphere is usually dominated by plasma depletions due to the ionospheric disturbance dynamo and/or disturbed thermospheric compositions. The combination and competition of the disturbed vertical plasma drifts through the solar wind‐magnetosphere‐ionosphere (SW‐M‐I) coupling and disturbed neutral compositions contribute significantly to the daytime TEC responses at different longitudinal sectors on 26 August during the main and early recovery phases. The eastward equatorial electrojet and O/N 2 during the recovery phase on 27–29 August are larger than the quiet reference, which suggest that the enhanced upward vertical plasma drifts combining with higher O/N 2 make an important contribution on the daytime positive ionospheric storm during the recovery phase. The enhanced vertical plasma drifts could not be driven by the SW‐M‐I coupling or ionospheric disturbance dynamo associated with the geomagnetic storm. Further studies should be untaken to explore the dominant sources for the enhanced upward vertical drifts during the recovery phase.

Abstract:Geomagnetic storms are extreme space weather events, which have considerable impacts on the ionosphere and power transmission systems. In this paper, the ionospheric responses to the geomagnetic storm on 22 June 2015, are analyzed from ground-based and satellite-based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) observations as well as observational data of digital ionosondes, and the main physical mechanisms of the ionospheric disturbances observed during the geomagnetic storm are discussed. Salient positive and negative storms are observed from vertical total electron content (VTEC) based on ground-based GNSS observations at different stages of the storm. Combining topside observations of Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) satellites (GRACE and MetOp satellites) with different orbital altitudes and corresponding ground-based observations, the ionospheric responses above and below the orbits are studied during the storm. To obtain VTEC from the slant TEC between Global Positioning System (GPS) and LEO satellites, we employ a multi-layer mapping function, which can effectively reduce the overall error caused by the single-layer geometric assumption where the horizontal gradient of the ionosphere is not considered. The results show that the topside observations of the GRACE satellite with a lower orbit can intuitively detect the impact caused by the fluctuation of the F2 peak height (hmF2). At the same time, the latitude range corresponding to the peak value of the up-looking VTEC on the event day becomes wider, which is the precursor of the Equatorial Ionization Anomaly (EIA). However, no obvious response is observed in the up-looking VTEC from MetOp satellites with higher orbits, which indicates that the VTEC responses to the geomagnetic storm mainly take place below the orbit of MetOp satellites.
Contrasting Behavior of the F2 Peak and the Topside Ionosphere in Response to the 2 October 2013 Geomagnetic Storm

Abstract:In this study, the ionospheric observations from ionosondes, ground‐based GPS receivers, Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and MetOp‐A satellites, and Fabry‐Perot interferometer over the Asian‐Australian sector have been used to investigate the responses of the F2 peak and the topside ionosphere to the 2 October 2013 geomagnetic storm, particularly during the recovery phase. The comparison between the multiple simultaneous observations revealed a contrasting behavior of the topside ionosphere and the F2 peak in East Asia during the recovery phase. The upward looking total electron content from low‐Earth orbit (LEO) satellites did not undergo such depletions as seen in the region near the F2 peak, and they even showed increases. Furthermore, the simulation results of the Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model are used to explore the possible mechanisms responsible for the observed features. The model results and observations suggested that the contrasting behavior of the F2 peak and the topside ionosphere is mainly associated with the enhancement of the equatorward winds, albeit the disturbed electric fields could play an important role in producing it.
Long‐lasting Negative Ionospheric Storm Effects in Low and Middle Latitudes During the Recovery Phase of the 17 March 2013 Geomagnetic Storm

Abstract:In this paper, an ionospheric electron density reanalysis algorithm was used to generate global optimized electron density during the 17-18 March 2013 geomagnetic storm by assimilating similar to 10 low Earth orbit satellites based and similar to 450 ground global navigation satellite system receiver-based total electron content into a background ionospheric model. The reanalyzed electron density could identify the large-scale ionospheric features quite well during storm time, including the storm-enhanced density, the positive ionospheric storm effect during the initial and main phases, and the negative ionospheric storm effect during the recovery phase. The simulations from the Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model can reproduce similar large-scale ionospheric disturbances as seen in the reanalysis results. Both the reanalysis and simulations show long-lasting (>17h) daytime negative storm effect over the Asia sector as well as hemispheric asymmetry during the recovery phase. Detailed analysis of the Global Ultraviolet Imager-derived O/N-2 ratio and model simulations indicate that the polar ward meridional wind disturbance, the downward ExB drift disturbance and O/N-2 depletion might be responsible for the negative storm effect. The hemispheric asymmetry is mainly caused by the geomagnetic field line configuration, which could cause hemispheric asymmetry in the O/N-2 depletion.

Abstract:We present the ionospheric responses over China during the magnetic storm on April 21–27, 2023. The ionospheric responses are investigated by using two-dimensional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) TEC images and Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) geostationary earth orbit (GEO) TEC which are obtained from the Crustal Movement Observation Network of China (CMONOC) and Yunnan Continuous Operational Reference System (CORS), respectively. The results show that the response of ionospheric TEC to magnetic storm occurs 2.4 h after the main phase of magnetic storm. A group of disturbances are found in the main phase of magnetic storm, and two groups of disturbances are found in the recovery phase. The maximum disturbance amplitude can reach 0.3 TECU. At the same time, we present that the disturbance in the main phase of the magnetic storm propagates westward at ~ 639.0 km/h. During the magnetic storm recovery phase, the first group of disturbances propagates from north to south at a speed of ~ 416.0 km/h, and the second group of disturbances propagates at a speed of ~ 218.1 km/h along the azimuth of 124.7°. The study also shows that the ionospheric negative storm caused by the magnetic storm is related to the thermosphere storm circulation. GUVI O/N 2 ratio data and the change of critical frequency variations in the F2 layer (foF2) further prove the evolution of the ionospheric negative storm.
