Abstract:Syngas is significant for the chemical industry for the synthesis of a variety of hydrocarbon fuels and chemicals. Different syngas-based products require syngas with different CO/H-2 ratios, which depend mainly on the design of the catalyst. Under this background, we successfully synthesized syngas by electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) with a controllable CO/H-2 ratio over a AuCu bimetallic catalyst. In contrast to the monometallic Au and Cu catalysts, the AuCu bimetallic catalyst gives a 95.2% of Faradaic efficiency (FE) at only 290 mV on the selective conversion from CO2 to CO. By tuning the Cu/Au ratio and potential during the electrochemical conversion, the H-2/CO in the obtained syngas products can be obtained at the wide range of 0.12 to 5.24 We propose that the controllable H-2/CO ratio from CO2 is significant in industrial production and will decrease the cost of catalyst fabrication.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2RR into syngas provides an attractive way to produce raw materials for synthesizing various value‐added chemicals. However, a wide range of tunable syngas ratio of CO/H2 is hard to achieve during the electrochemical CO2 conversion process. Herein, we propose a facile electrodeposition method for the preparation of Sb modified Cu‐based catalyst with a high activity for the ratio‐tunable production of syngas. The Cu10Sb1 catalyst reaches a high FE of 71% for CO at a potential of ‐1.09 V vs. RHE with the tunable CO/H2 ratio of syngas from ~0.6 to ~7.8 at the applied potentials from ‐0.78 V to ‐1.09 V. Theoretical calculations reveal the tuning effect of Sb atoms on Cu‐based catalyst for the electrochemical conversion of CO2 to syngas, in which the formation of CO on Sb modified Cu‐based catalyst possesses low energy barrier in potential‐limiting steps during CO2RR. Meanwhile, the robust charge interaction between COOH* species and the surface of Sb modified Cu‐based catalyst enhances the activity of COOH* species, thus improving FE and current for conversion into syngas products. This work brings a new strategy for the synthesis of low‐cost syngas catalyst and the tuning effect of metal atom on Cu‐based catalyst for CO2RR.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of CO2 to syngas (H2 + CO) offers a resultful solution for the ongoing carbon emission and energy crisis issues. However, there are still few efficient catalysts for CO2RR-to-syngas electrolysis. Herein, a density functional theory (DFT) study of the Cu-M (M = Cd, Zn, Ni, Ag, and Pd) bimetal catalysts (BMCs) for CO2RR and HER is reported. The results indicate that the reaction barrier is significantly changed in the electrochemical conversion of CO2 into CO and HER by changing the Cu/M ratio. d band center (εd) has a good linear relationship with ΔGH*, ΔGCOOH* and ΔGCO*, so εd is a good descriptor for hydrogen reduction reaction (HER) and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) activity. The Cu-Pd catalyst displays outstanding catalytic activity for HER and CO2RR. HER activity of the Cu-Pd catalyst is even comparable to that of the current most effective Pt catalysts. Compared with other catalysts with different Cu/M ratios (Cu/M = 0.5 and Cu/M = 2), the Cu-Cd catalyst at low Cu/Cd ratio (0.5) is the only catalyst which is more favorite to CO2RR than HER. This theoretical study may provide guidance to design the effective electrocatalysts for the CO2RR and HER, and shed light on the application of Cu-based bimetal materials in syngas production.

Abstract:A novel and tunable synthesis of Fe/CuO x bimetallic catalysts has been achieved via a simple Fe-precipitation and calcination method, which was used for highly efficient CO 2 electroreduction to control the wide-ranging CO to H 2 ratio by simply changing the ratio of metals. The faradaic efficiency of CO could reach 86.1% with a current density of 49.1 mA cm −2 . The ratio of CO/H 2 could reach 1.94 to 6.18 and it was discovered that the Fe/CuO x bimetallic catalysts could easily get different ratios of syngas, which can be applied directly in industry.

Abstract:In this work, monodisperse core/shell Cu/In2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) were developed to boost efficient and tunable syngas formation via electrochemical CO2 reduction for the first time. The efficiency and composition of syngas production on the developed carbon-supported Cu/In2O3 catalysts are highly dependent on the In2O3 shell thickness (0.4-1.5 nm). As a result, a wide H2/CO ratio (4/1 to 0.4/1) was achieved on the Cu/In2O3 catalysts by controlling the shell thickness and the applied potential (from -0.4 to -0.9 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode), with Faraday efficiency of syngas formation larger than 90%. Specifically, the best-performing Cu/In2O3 catalyst demonstrates remarkably large current densities under low overpotentials (4.6 and 12.7 mA/cm2 at -0.6 and -0.9 V, respectively), which are competitive with most of the reported systems for syngas formation. Mechanistic discussion implicates that the synergistic effect between lattice compression and Cu doping in the In2O3 shell may enhance the binding of *COOH on the Cu/In2O3 NP surface, leading to the enhanced CO generation relative to Cu and In2O3 catalysts. This report demonstrates a new strategy to realize efficient and tunable syngas formation via rationally designed core/shell catalyst configuration.

Abstract:As an effective way to implement net-zero CO2 emissions and storage of intermittent renewable energy, the reduction of CO2 into chemical fuels through electrochemical way has attracted tremendous interest. Monometallic copper (Cu) has shown special potential in transferring CO2 to CO and hydrocarbon compounds, especially multi-carbon products, but the low selectivity of products is a headache limitation. To date, Cu-based bimetallic electrocatalysts have shown particular capacity to favor the desired products, because they theoretically provide a platform for modulating the binding affinity of key intermediates. This review focuses on the recent advances in Cu-based bimetallic electrocatalysts, including part of the reaction mechanism of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction under specific catalytic system, the methods for Cu-based bimetallic catalysts fabrication, as well as the categories of bimetallic Cu-based catalysts with different secondary metals. At last, we proposed the challenges and prospects for Cu-based bimetallic catalysts for electrochemical CO2 conversion. The purpose of this review is to order the ideas in the design and synthesis of bimetallic catalysts, thus to provide valuable reference for improving the CO2 reduction ability by constructing bimetallic catalysts.

Abstract:CO2 electroreduction, which coupled the application of renewable electricity, paved a promising way for syngas synthesis. Herein, we demonstrated that Co-based N doped carbon prepared by a simple pyrolysis method provided an ideal platform to generate syngas with tunable ratios of H-2 to CO. During CO2 electroreduction, Co-based N doped carbon exhibited the highest faradaic efficiency (FE) of 56.3% for CO with a total current density of 10.8 mA cm(-2) at -0.9 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Structural characterizations showed that the co-existence of Co-0 and Co2+ was responsible for the synthesis of tunable syngas. Notably, we obtained syngas with tunable ratios of H-2 to CO ranging from similar to 1 : 1 to 3 : 1 with the highest current density reaching 47.6 mA cm(-2). This work provides a green way to produce syngas for further applications.

Abstract:Syngas conversion serves as a gas-to-liquid technology to produce liquid fuels and valuable chemicals from coal, natural gas, or biomass. During syngas conversion, sintering is known to deactivate the catalyst owing to the loss of active surface area. However, the growth of nanoparticles might induce the formation of new active sites such as grain boundaries (GBs) which perform differently from the original nanoparticles. Herein, we reported a unique Cu-based catalyst, Cu nanoparticles with in-situ generated GBs confined in zeolite Y (denoted as activated Cu/Y), which exhibited a high selectivity for C5+ hydrocarbons (65.3 C%) during syngas conversion. Such high selectivity for long-chain products distinguished activated Cu/Y from typical copper-based catalysts which mainly catalyze methanol synthesis. This unique performance was attributed to the GBs, while the zeolite assisted the stabilization through spatial confinement. Specifically, the GBs enabled H-assisted dissociation of CO and subsequent hydrogenation into CHx*. CHx* species not only serve as the initiator but also directly polymerize on Cu GBs, known as the carbide mechanism. Meanwhile, the synergy of GBs and their vicinal low-index facets led to the CO insertion where non-dissociative adsorbed CO on low-index facets migrated to GBs and inserted into the metal-alkyl bond for the chain growth.

Abstract:Based on a theoretical design, the tri‐functional electrocatalyst Cu10Sn3‐Cu‐SnOx is constructed and enables realizing a concurrent CO and H2 formation with tunable syngas composition in CO2RR: Cu10Sn3 for CO2 to CO, SnOx for CO2 to formate at relatively high overpotential, and the Cu–SnOx interface for favorable H2 evolution. Electrocatalytic transformation of CO2 to various syngas compositions is an exceedingly attractive approach to carbon‐neutral recycling. Meanwhile, the achievement of selectivity, stability, and tunability of product ratios using single‐component electrocatalysts is challenging. Herein, the theoretically‐assisted design of the triple‐component nanocomposite electrocatalyst Cu10Sn3‐Cu‐SnOx that addresses this challenge is presented. It is shown that Cu10Sn3 is a valuable electrocatalyst for suitable CO2 reduction to CO, SnO2 for CO2 reduction to formate at large overpotentials, and that the Cu–SnO2 interface facilitates H2 evolution. Accordingly, the interaction between the three functional components affords tunable CO/H2 ratios, from 1:2 to 2:1, of the produced syngas by controlling the applied potentials and relative contents of functional components. The syngas generation is selective (Faradaic efficiency, FE = 100%) at relatively lower cathodic potentials, whereas formate is the only liquid product detected at relatively higher cathodic potentials. The theoretically guided design approach therefore provides a new opportunity to boost the selectivity and stability of CO2 reduction to tunable syngas.

Abstract:We report single-atom Cu catalysts dispersed on nitrogen-doped carbon by a nitrogen-coordination strategy. The presence of nitrogen enabled good dispersion and attachment of atomic Cu species on the nitrogen-doped carbon frameworks with Cu-N-x configurations. The Cu doping concentrations and Cu-Nx configurations were well-tuned by the pyrolysis temperature. At a high Cu concentration of 4.9%mol, the distance between neighboring Cu-N-x species was close enough to enable C-C coupling and produce C2H4. In contrast, at Cu concentrations lower than 2.4%(mol), the distance between Cu-Nx species was large so that the electrocatalyst favored the formation of CH4 as C-1 products. Density functional theory calculations further confirmed the capability of producing C2H4 by two CO intermediates binding on two adjacent Cu-N-2 sites, while the isolated Cu-N-4, the neighboring Cu-N-4, and the isolated Cu-N-2 sites led to formation of CH4. Our work demonstrates a facile approach of tuning active Cu sites for CO2 electroreduction to different hydrocarbons.
Enhancement of electrocatalytic CO 2 performance by different components of Cu-based bimetallic MOFs

Abstract:Cu-based catalysts have been promising materials for electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide into C 2+ products. However, the low selectivity of Cu-based catalysts for a single C 2+ product limits their application. Herein, this work presents a strategy to modify the coordination environment of Cu-based MOF catalysts through the introduction of different doping atoms, aiming to improve the selectivity towards ethanol products. The CuIn-BTC-DBD catalyst exhibits an ethanol FE of 87% with a partial current density of −17 mA cm −2 at −1.4 V vs. RHE. Through experimental investigations, we reveal the modulation of the coordination environment of Cu-based MOFs through the doping of In atoms. This strategy improves the selectivity for ethanol products. This study provides a new approach to designing bimetallic Cu-based MOF electrocatalysts with high efficiency, mild conditions, and stable CO 2 RR to ethanol products.

Abstract:CO2 electrochemical reduction to syngas (CO2RR-to-syngas) is an environment friendly and promising CO2 utilization technology. However, there are still few efficient catalysts for CO2RR-to-syngas electrolysis. The crystal orientation regulation is one of the important methods to enhance the activity of catalyst and there is still a lack of systematic research in this field. In this work, a comparative study of the Cu-M bimetal catalysts (BMCs) for CO2RR-to-syngas is carried out using density functional theory (DFT) calculations to examine the crystal orientation effects. The results indicate that the reaction barrier is significantly changed on different crystal orientations. Gibbs free energy change of the potential limiting step (ΔGPLS) on the Cu (1 1 0) surface is lower than those on the Cu (1 1 1) and Cu (1 0 0) surfaces. The Cu-Pd catalyst exhibits better catalytic activity for HER than Cu-Ag, Cu-Ni, Cu-Zn, and Cu-Cd catalysts. CO2RR activity of the Cu-Pd catalyst is better than that of most of the catalysts reported so far. The Cu-Ni catalyst exposing the Cu(1 0 0) surface is the only catalyst which is more favorite to CO2RR than HER. This work provides guidance for the design of highly efficient catalysts for CO2RR-to-syngas.

Abstract:Electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) is attractive for efficiently recycling excessive CO2 to value-added feedstocks. However, their efficiency and selectivity strongly rely on the electrocatalysts. Herein, we report intermetallic AuCu catalysts for the selective and efficient CO2 conversion to syngas. Particularly, the ordered AuCu intermetallic catalyst achieves a high faradic efficiency of 75% with a partial current density of 78.3 mA cm(-2) at -0.6 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) for producing CO in a flowing cell configuration. Moreover, the content of the generated syngas is widely controlled according to the potential-dependent CO2 reduction. Electrochemical results demonstrate that crystal engineering in ordered intermetallic alloy improves the activity and selectivity of CO2 reduction. This work not only provides efficient intermetallic AuCu catalysts for selectively converting CO2 but also offers valuable insights into crystal engineering for comprehensive and selective utilization of CO2 for a sustainable community.

Abstract:Bimetallic Co x Zn y -ZIF catalysts were synthesized with adjustable Co/Zn–nitrogen sites for the electrochemical CO 2 RR to tunable syngas, resulting in a H 2 /CO ratio ranging from 1 : 1 to 4 : 1. The excellent CO 2 adsorption capacity and large specific surface areas were responsible for the high activity of all these Co x Zn y -ZIF materials. This work has the potential to drive advancements in both the MOF application sector and electrochemical CO 2 reduction.

Abstract:We report an active zinc-copper (Zn-Cu) bimetallic electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction to CO, prepared by a facile galvanic procedure. Under moderate overpotentials, Zn-Cu catalysts that are Zn rich exhibit intrinsic activity for CO formation superior to that of pure Zn, Cu, and Ag, the last of which is the state- of-the-art catalyst in CO2 electrolyzers. Combinatorial experiments involving catalysts prepared by physical vapor deposition reveal trends across the Zn-Cu system, corroborating the high CO selectivity unrivaled by other alloys and intermetallics. Physical and electrochemical characterization and first principles theory reveal that the origin of this synergy in intrinsic activity is an electronic effect from bimetallic Zn-Cu sites that stabilizes the carboxyl intermediate during CO2 reduction to CO. Furthermore, by integrating Zn-Cu into gas-diffusion electrodes, we demonstrate that bimetallic effects lead to improved electrocatalytic performance at industrially relevant currents. These insights provide catalyst design principles that can guide future development of efficient and earth- abundant CO-producing electrocatalysts.
Tuning the activity and selectivity of electroreduction of CO2 to synthesis gas using bimetallic catalysts

Abstract:The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction to syngas with controlled CO/H2 ratios has been studied on Pd-based bimetallic hydrides using a combination of in situ characterization and density functional theory calculations. When compared with pure Pd hydride, the bimetallic Pd hydride formation occurs at more negative potentials for Pd-Ag, Pd-Cu, and Pd-Ni. Theoretical calculations show that the choice of the second metal has a more significant effect on the adsorption strength of *H than *HOCO, with the free energies between these two key intermediates (i.e., ΔG(*H)-ΔG(*HOCO)) correlating well with the carbon dioxide reduction reaction activity and selectivity observed in the experiments, and thus can be used as a descriptor to search for other bimetallic catalysts. The results also demonstrate the possibility of alloying Pd with non-precious transition metals to promote the electrochemical conversion of CO2 to syngas.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction into controllable clean syngas (H2 and CO) by using clean electric energy is an environment-friendly strategy for the cycle of carbon resources. However, there are still some challenges in this process, such as low current density and high onset potential. In this work, ZIF-8 is used as the precursor to adjust the ratio of metal Ni and Cu to control the composition of syngas (H2/CO 0.6:1–8:1). When metal Ni and Cu are both present, the onset potential can be effectively reduced, and the limiting current density would increase at the same time. Through subsequent experimental characterization and analysis, the catalyst of Ni Cu-1 effectively reduces the onset potential and increases the limiting current density. What’s more, the superior CO2 electroreduction performance is attributed to the high binding energy of pyridine N in Ni NC, and the introduction of Cu in Ni Cu-1 is beneficial to the generation of syngas with adjustable composition. The research provides a feasible method for electrocatalytic CO2RR to reasonably utilize H2 competition reaction and regulate the proportion of syngas.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction to produce CO is one of the most promising pathways to eliminate CO 2 emissions and store intermittent energy sources. However, the most critical usage of CO is via mixing with H 2 to form syngas, which is a crucial feedstock for many value-added chemicals. Therefore, producing syngas with a suitable CO/H 2 ratio in a one-step reaction is desirable in the CO 2 RR process. To achieve this end, dual single-atom sites supported by the nitrogen-doped carbon show great potential. Herein, we show that a dual single-atom catalyst with Bi-N 4 and Zn-N 4 units is efficient for generating syngas with tunable CO/H 2 ratios (0.20 to 2.92), which is of great significance to downstream industrial production. Moreover, this work highlights the potential to control the CO/H 2 ratios for efficient syngas production using the coexisting single-atom sites.

Abstract:In situ reduction process induced CuZn alloy with more active sites, which are favorable for desorption of *CO, and increased CO ratio in syngas produced during the CO2RR process, resulting in the regulated ratio of syngas (H2/CO 0.8–5.8). Alloying is considered as a promising method for syngas (H2 and CO mixture gas) generation. However, it is challenging to elucidate the relationship between the ratios of syngas and alloy components for CO2 reduction reaction. Herein, through tuning the Cu/Zn ratio on CuZn alloy, the H2/CO ratios in CuZn‐2 (Cu/Zn = 0.77) can be tuned in a noticeable range between 0.8 and 5.8 at −0.88 to −1.28 V versus RHE, and a durable stability of 12 h. The CuZn‐2 displays better performance and enhanced dynamics than other samples. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopies and Tafel results reveal that CuZn‐2 behaves kinetically optimized performance. Density functional theory calculations results reveal that CuZn alloy exhibits middle desorption intensity of *H for HER compared with pure Zn and Cu. CuZn alloy effectively decreases the energy barrier of CO2 molecules activated to *COOH relative to Zn, and also the alloy renders it easier for *CO desorb to generate CO for Cu. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies also observe a significant intensity of *CO on CuZn‐2. This work demonstrates that alloying Cu and Zn can create active sites, in which Cu acts as an auxiliary active site further facilitating *CO generation.
