Abstract:Catalytic performances of Mn2O3 nanoparticles for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation in bisphenol A (BPA) degradation were comprehensively investigated in this study. Experimental results showed that 10 mg/L BPA could be 100% degraded within 20 min with the dosages of 0.2 g/L Mn2O3 and 0.1 mM PMS. Moreover, Mn2O3 showed remarkable activity in activation of PMS and excellent adaptability in various real water matrices, including river water, tap water and secondary effluents. Based on the radical detection and scavenging experiments, it was found that both radical and non-radical oxidation contributed to the degradation of BPA and O-1(2) was the dominant species in the degradation compared to (OH)-O-center dot, SO4 center dot- and O-2(center dot-). A total of 15 transformation products were identified by LC/MS-MS during BPA degradation in the Mn2O3/PMS system, and degradation pathways via three routes are proposed. Compared with lab-made catalysts reported in the literature, the Mn2O3 catalyst demonstrated its superiority in terms of its high TOC removal, low PMS consumption and fast degradation rate for BPA.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of removing endocrine disruptors in water environment, Bi 2 WO 6 @MXenes-NS（BM-NS） composite catalyst was synthesized by hydrothermal method, and bisphenol A（BPA） was degraded by activation of permonosulfate（PMS）. The morphology and crystal structure of the catalyst were characterized by SEM, TEM and XRD. The effects of different catalyst systems, PMS concentrations, solution pH and coexisting ions on the degradation of BPA were investigated. The results showed that when the concentration of MXenes-NS was 0.5%, the concentration of catalyst was 1 g/L, the concentration of PMS was 0.3 g/L, and the solution pH was 3.03, BM-NS/PMS system had a strong BPA degradation performance, and the removal rate reached 85.3% within 120 min. In addition, the effects of inorganic anions on BPA removal were in a sequence as follows: Cl - ＜H 2 PO - 4 ＜SO 2- 4 ＜HCO - 3 ≈NO - 3 . The removal rate of BPA remained 70.1% after 4 cycles. The results of the radical quenching experiment showed that SO - 4 · was the main active radical. Combined with LC-MS, the possible degradation pathway of BPA was proposed. The above experimental results indicated that the prepared BM-NS catalyst had a good application prospect in activating PMS to degrade BPA.

Abstract:Manganese oxide (MnO)x with earth-abundance and low toxicity have received considerable interest for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) but suffer from poor catalytic activity and stability. Herein, a unique hybrid hollow structure with ultrasmall size MnOx quantum dots (QDs, 3 nm) homogeneously dispersed on N-doped porous carbon shells (denoted as MnOx/N-HPCS) was designed as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst. The ultrafine nanoscaling morphology of MnOx QDs enlarges its specific surface area (227.9 m(2)/g) for providing more active sites. The N-doped carbon (NC) shells can not only greatly improve the conductivity of the hybrid and effectively prevent the aggregation of MnOx QDs, but serve as metal-free active sites for Fenton-like reaction. While the hollow porous structure enables the fast transportation of reactants access to the full-exposure active sites. When evaluated as catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, the MnOx/N-HPCS hybrid outperformed other benchmark catalysts toward the removal of bisphenol A (BPA) with highest removal rate of 0.29 min(-1). Results showed that exceed 99% of BPA (10 mg L-1) was removed within 20 min at the dosage of 0.2 g L-1 PMS and 0.06 g L-1 MnOx/N-HPCS. Moreover, the mechanism of PMS activation by MnOx/N-HPCS was studied. The mixed valence states of Mn, the hydroxyl species induced complexation of equivalent to Mn((3+/4+))-PMS and the metal-free N-doped sites synergistically enhancing the generation of reactive oxygen species ((OH)-O-. and SO4.-). Furthermore, the MnOx/N-HPCS catalyst also displayed good reusability (successive 4 runs) with negligible Mn leaching (less than 2 mu g L-1). Together with the investigation of the application in real environment water samples (such as tap water and wastewater), we demonstrated this novel Mn-based AOPs catalyst with unique structure and high activity will hold great potential in environmental remediation.

Abstract:A new catalyst, CuCo2O4 supported on graphene oxide (CuCo2O4-GO), was synthesized as a heterogeneous catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA). In this study, highly efficient degradation of BPA by PMS (0.2 mM) activated with CuCo2O4-GO (100 mg/L) was achieved and the degradation efficiency was 100% within 5 min at initial pH 7.0. The reaction rate constant (2.662 min(-1)) of BPA by CuCo2O4-GO/PMS was 35.49 times greater than that of CuCo2O4/PMS (0.075 min(-1)), and the optimal percentage of GO was 20%. The catalytic activity of CuCo2O4-GO as synthesized in this work was much higher than that of CoFe2O4-GO which has been reported previously. In addition, the degradation efficiency increased with the rise of catalyst dose and PMS dosage, it exhibited the best performance at pH 7.0. The detection of radicals by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments indicated that SO4 center dot- was the main free radical that responsible for the degradation of BPA while 'OH also was produced in the CuCo2O4-GO/ PMS system. The CuCo2O4-GO maintained its catalytic activity during the repeated batch experiments and the leaching of metal ion was limited. Finally, the toxicity of BPA decreased synchronously during the reaction process and higher content of TOC removal was achieved by CuCo2O4-GO/PMS than that of CuCo2O4/PMS. The performance of CuCo2O4-GO/PMS in actual water indicated that CuCo2O4-GO/PMS system had great potential in practical application in the degradation of refractory organic pollutants in water.

Abstract:This study used coagulation sludge from a landfill leachate treatment to prepare a modified coagulation sludge (MCS) catalyst by the limited oxygen pyrolysis method, and the adsorption, degradation efficiency, and reaction mechanism of bisphenol A (BPA) in the MCS activated peroxymonosulfate (MCS/PMS) process were investigated. The pyrolysis temperature determined the adsorption capacity and the activation ability of MCS. At a pyrolysis temperature of 300 °C for 2 h, the MCS300-2 test material had the best adsorption capacity for BPA, while MCS450-2 prepared at a pyrolysis temperature of 450 °C for 2 h had a better catalytic performance towards PMS. In the MCS/PMS process, BPA (20 mg/L) could be completely degraded at 120 min under room temperature when the initial pH = 7, PMS dosage = 3 g/L, and MCS dosage = 0.3 g/L. Radical quenching experiments indicated that both hydroxyl radical (·OH) and sulfate radical (SO 4 −· ) existed in the MCS/PMS process, and ·OH played a major role in BPA degradation. The changes in morphology, functional groups, components, and surface element valence state of MCS catalysts before and after the reaction were investigated. It was found that the BPA degradation reaction was a coupled adsorption and oxidation process, in which homogenous in situ and heterogeneous effects were included in the reactions. In addition, the stability of the MCS/PMS process was verified in different environmental scenarios, including ultrapure water, tap water, and municipal wastewater. Furthermore, the degradation intermediates (such as p -hydroxyl phenol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid) of BPA were determined by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and the reaction mechanisms in the MCS/PMS process were investigated.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation process is considered a potential technology for water treatment. Here, palygorskite (PAL)-mediated cobalt-copper-ferrite nanoparticles (16%-CoCu0.4Fe1·6O4@PAL, donated as 16%-CCFO@PAL) were employed for PMS activation to remove bisphenol S (BPS). BPS degradation was greater than 99% under the optimal conditions within 25 min, on which the effects of various influencing factors were explored. The adsorption dissociation energy of PMS over 16%-CCFO@PAL was -6.27 eV, which was lower than that of the Cu-free catalyst (-6.15 eV), demonstrating the excellent catalytic ability of 16%-CCFO@PAL. The efficient catalytic ability of 16%-CCFO@PAL was also verified in real water samples. The oxidation intermediates were identified and their generations were systematically analyzed by DFT calculations. The possible degradation pathways of BPS were proposed and the toxicity of products was predicted. BPS affected the normal development of zebrafish embryos and the levels of sex hormone in adult male zebrafish, and was harmful to the tissues, such as testis, liver, and intestine of zebrafish. The 16%-CCFO@PAL/PMS process can effectively reduce the toxicity of BPS-polluted water. This study paves the way for the real application of 16%-CCFO@PAL/PMS oxidation process and provides a new perspective for the evaluation of water toxicity.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes are perceived as a novel strategy for water purification. However, designing an efficient catalyst with a low metal leaching rate remains challenging. Here, under palygorskite (PAL) mediation, 16%-CoCu0.4Fe1.6O4@PAL (16%-CCFO@PAL) was constructed, exhibiting ample oxygen vacancies (V-O) and low metal leakage. The VO was confirmed by systematic characterizations and theoretical calculations. The catalyst showed the efficient catalytic capacity for PMS by dual-path (i.e., metal sites and VO) activation. Large amounts of SO4 center dot-, center dot OH, and O-1(2) were produced, greatly destroying bisphenol S (BPS). BPS removal was greater than 99% within 25 min in the 16%-CCFO@PAL/PMS system. At the metal sites, PMS was activated under the synergistic effects of Co(II)/Co(III), Fe(II)/Fe(III), and Cu(I)/Cu(II) pairs and electron transfer. In addition to metal sites, the VO was also an activation center for PMS, which mainly captured the O-I atom in [H-O-I-O-II-SO3]-, donating an electron to OI and promoting SO4 center dot- generation. The interfacial reaction mechanism was explored by in situ tests, and a dual-path activation mechanism was proposed. This work provides a new perspective for VO-assisted PMS activation for water treatment.

Abstract:Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes had been widely applied in the water treatment. In this study, a novel solar-assisted electrooxidation process (SEOP) to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) or peroxydisulfate (PDS) was conducted for the degradation of bisphenol S (BPS). The SEOP with persulfate (PS) demonstrated its synergistic effect for BPS degradation, compared with the electrooxidation/PS and the solar process. The hydroxyl radical, sulfate radical (SO4 (center dot -)), and singlet oxygen were regarded as primary active species in BPS degradation in SEOP with PS. The transition structure complex (persulfate*) on the anode promoted the efficiency of BPS degradation via the non-radical mechanism. The activation of PMS and PDS in SEOP was dominated through radical and non-radical mechanism, respectively. To effectively supplement experimental work with quantum chemical calculation, density function theory (DFT) showed that the active sites mainly focused on the phenol ring of BPS. The energy barrier calculation indicated that BPS was more susceptible to be attacked by SO4 (center dot -) through electron transfer. BPS was mainly degraded by ring-opening, substitution, addition, C-C bond breaking, and decarboxylation reactions. Furthermore, the effective decrease in bio-toxicity of BPS intermediates in SEOP with PS was predicted. Experiments under various current densities, initial concentration of PS, electrolyte, and humic acid suggested the feasibility of SEOP with PS. BPS was degraded with lower energy consumption (0.18 kWh.m(- 3).order(-1)) in SEOP with PMS than that in SEOP with PDS (0.30 kWh.m(-3).order(-1)) and without PS (0.38 kWh.m(-3) order(-1)), respectively. The SEOP with PS poses the feasible, convenient, and economic potential for the degradation of refractory pollutants.
A Novel Peroxymonosulfate Activation Process by Periclase for Efficient Singlet Oxygen-Mediated Degradation of Organic Pollutants

Abstract:In this study, a novel peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator, periclase (MgO) was applied to the activation of PMS for the degradation of organic contaminants in aqueous solution. It was found that MgO exerts an excellent and stable catalytic performance for PMS activation to degrade a wide range of pollutants including bisphenol A (BPA), phenol, chlorophenol, and dye, with degradation efficiencies of 100%, 100%, 41%, and 59%, respectively. Results from a combination of electron spin resonance (ESR), free radical quenching, chemical probe and isotope labeling investigations confirm that singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) was the dominant reactive species generated in the PMS/MgO system and accounted for BPA degradation. The steady-state concentration of O-1(2) was 13.2 x 10(-13) M. Further evidence from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) suggested that O-1(2) was generated by the self-decomposition of PMS induced by surface hydroxyl groups on MgO. In addition, the degradation of BPA was hardly affected by anions and humic acid (HA) that commonly existed in the environmental matrices. The naturally occurring periclase also has high catalytic ability for PMS activation and BPA degradation. Compared with other transition metals-based radical pathways and carbonaceous materials-based non-radical pathways of PMS activation, MgO exerts a comparable catalytic performance but less potential risk and cheaper. This study developed a novel environmentally friendly catalyst with low cost and high efficiency for the selective degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Cobalt oxide (CoO) could activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to remove pollutants but the catalytic performance was restricted by limited active sites and it was with risk of harmful cobalt ion leaching. In order to solve these problems, bimetallic oxides with package structure were researched by dispersing CoO nanoparticles on a stable support (magnesium oxide, MgO) via simple one-step coprecipitation method. Co-Mg bimetallic oxides with minute quantities of CoO and highly dispersed structure could efficiently activate PMS for degradation of bisphenol A (BPA). The catalytic properties of catalysts with different molar ratios of Co and Mg were evaluated. The optimal molar ratio (0.075:15) of Co and Mg was found in the Co-Mg bimetallic oxides, which could maximize its catalytic performance for PMS in a wide pH range. Influences of different systems, catalyst dosages, PMS concentrations, temperatures, initial pH values and mineralization rates were researched for BPA degradation. And the oxidation capacities to remove BPA in the different aqueous matrices were evaluated for the catalyst/PMS system. The addition of anions and nature organic matter (NOM) showed that there existed positive (Cl- and H2PO4-) and negative (NO3-, HCO3-, HPO42- and NOM) effects for BPA degradation. Additionally, main reactive radicals were certified by quenching experiments. Four successive experiments and evaluation of concentration of cobalt ion leaching illustrated good stability of the catalyst, which was related with its package structure. Finally, activation mechanism of PMS, proposed degradation pathways of BPA and acute toxicity of degradation intermediates of BPA were analyzed.

Abstract:Bisphenol S (BPS) has been detected frequently in water bodies, which poses a serious threat to human health and the environment. The sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation process is considered as a promising water purification technology by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). However, a catalyst with low metal leaching rate and high effective catalytic ability is needed to activate PMS. In this study, natural clay of palygorskite (PAL) was used to mediate monodispersed CoFe2O4 nanoparticles to degrade BPS by PMS activation. The monodispersed CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were distributed and anchored on the surface of PAL, which caused the 16%CoFe2O4@PAL (16%-CFO@PAL) composite expose more reaction sites, thus exhibiting excellent catalytic performance. A satisfactory BPS removal rate (> 99%) was obtained by introducing 50 mg L-1 16%-CFO@PAL and 0.16 mM PMS. The interaction mechanism between CoFe2O4 nanoparticles and PAL was discussed. The Al-O-Fe bond between CoFe2O4 nanoparticles and PAL endowed the 16%-CFO@PAL composite with low metal leaching property, high stability and reusability. SO4.- and 1O2 played a dominant role in the degradation of BPS. The generation mechanism of reactive species was proposed. The influences of various degradation parameters (e.g., catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, initial solution pH, and BPS concentration) and water constituents (e.g., inorganic anions and NOM) on the degradation of BPS were investigated. Based on the identified intermediates and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the possible degradation pathways of BPS were discussed. This study provides a new idea for the preparation of high-efficiency natural clay-based PMS catalysts for water purification.

Abstract:Manganese oxide activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) has gradually become one of the research focuses in the field of advanced oxidation. In this work, beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) modified amorphous manganese oxide (CD-AM) catalyst was obtained from a mild reaction condition (80 degrees C oil bath), high temperature crystallization is avoided in the synthesis process, which reduces the difficulty of catalyst preparation process and energy consumption. beta-CD is involved in the formation of manganese oxides. Amorphous manganese oxides have larger specific surface area and better PMS activation effect than crystalline manganese oxides, which is different from previous studies. The enrichment of cyclodextrin on BPA can improve the removal activity of amorphous manganese oxide/PMS system on BPA. The introduction of beta-CD increased the bisphenol A (BPA) degradation efficiency from 33.1% to 99.4%, and brought the kinetic constant to its 14.9 times. The 94% BPA degradation efficiency was obtained under neutral conditions that is more favorable for the actual process. During the degradation process, O-1(2) and .OH were the main ROS in CD-AM/PMS system, and O.-2 not only promoted the conversion of O.- 2 to O-1(2) but also accelerated the cycle of Mn (III)/Mn (IV). In addition, a simpler material recovery process for application was achieved by transforming CD-AM into the "supported membrane" (AMSM), and better performance and lower Mn ion leaching concentration were accessible. With the utilization of AMSM, Mn ion concentration in the filtrate after first filtration was about 1.2 mg/L, which was only 37% of the Mn ion concentration firstly detected in CD-AM. And after four cycles, the BPA degradation efficiency was 96.9%. When AMSM/PMS system was used to treat BPA in river water, the final degradation efficiency reached 94.8%. CD-AM as a catalyst for activating PMS shows great application potential in actual water.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate-assisted advanced oxidation processes (PMS-AOPs) catalyzed by single-atom catalysts have become state-of-the-art technologies for environmental remediation. In this study, Cobalt single-atom catalysts supported by graphitic carbon nitride (SA-CoCN) containing Co-N-4 active sites were developed as PMS activators for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. BPA (10 mg L-1) was completely removed with 0.1 g L-1 SA-CoCN and 0.5 mM PMS, and this process was pH-dependent. Instead of the widely recognized generation of free radicals (SO4 center dot- and center dot OH), high-valent cobalt [Co(IV)] and singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) were the predominant reactive species for pollutant degradation under acidic and alkaline conditions, respectively. The conversion of methyl phenyl sulfoxide (PMSO) to methyl phenyl sulfone (PMSO2), electron paramagnetic resonance tests and radical scavenger experiments were used to probe these reactive species. According to density functional theory calculations, the formation of Co(IV) and O-1(2) was thermodynamically favorable, and the generation pathways of Co(IV) and O-1(2) were further discussed. This study provides an insight into the single-atom cobalt catalyst/PMS process.
Activation of peroxymonosulfate by the Co/Zn bimetallic oxide for the degradation of bisphenol A

Abstract:In this study,a facile and efficient route for controllable synthesis of Co/Zn bimetallic oxide by microwave heating method was proposed.The catalytic activity of the prepared catalyst was evaluated by the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS).The influences of preparation conditions on the degradation of BPA was investigated in detail.The results showed that BPA was completely degraded over the optimal Co/Zn bimetallic oxide by activation of PMS within 15 min when the microwave temperature,microwave time,calcination temperature and calcination time were 80 ℃,20 min,400 ℃ and 3 h,respectively.Moreover,the optimal catalyst was characterized using various techniques,indicating that the catalyst was confirmed to be cubic ZnCo2O4 with sheet shape,possessing high specific surface area of 94.0 m2· g-1.According to the investigation results of the different oxidation systems and preparation methods,it can be seen that the catalyst prepared by microwave heating method showed a superior catalytic efficiency and there was an excellent synergistic effect between the Co/Zn bimetallic oxide and PMS.Herein,it is a good way to solve the problem of metal ion leaching and low catalytic efficiency by Co/Zn bimetallic oxide catalysts using microwave heating method.

Abstract:Synthetic manganese oxides had been widely investigated to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for contaminant removal in recent years. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS, e.g., radicals) was believed to be the primary PMS activation pathways. In this work, we report that natural manganese-containing minerals (NMMs) were also effective for PMS activation to degrade bisphenols in water. Moreover, a nonradical pathway different from literatures, was confirmed according to scavenging tests, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) characterization, chemical probing, solvent exchange, and Raman and electrochemical analysis. It was verified that PMS complexed with the mineral surface via inner-sphere interaction. This surface interaction improved its reactivity towards the probe compounds, bisphenols. Taking bisphenol AF (BPAF) as an example, its degradation rate was related to surface area and dosages of the mineral. Water constituents such as Cl-, HCO3-, and NOM had negligible impact on BPAF removal. The activity of the mineral was kept in an 80-hour continuous flow test. The PMS/NMM coupled oxidation degraded BPAF through direct electron transfer, and the degradation intermediates further underwent hydroxylation, bond cleavage, H-atom substitution, aromatic ring-opening, and decarboxylation. Consequently, eco-toxicity of BPAF can be reduced during the oxidation.

Abstract:Heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) using cobalt-based nanomaterials is a promising strategy to degrade organic pollutants, in which the formation of Co(II)OH complex is a critical step. Here, cobalt hydroxychloride (Co2(OH)3Cl) nanoplates were synthesized by a one-pot precipitation method and exhibited high activity for the degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in the presence of PMS. The use of Co2(OH)3Cl and PMS caused a complete TBBPA degradation (40 mg L−1) at pH 9 in 2 min. The pseudo-first-order rate constant of TBBPA is 2.5 min−1, being 9, 14, and 6 folds larger than those for α-Co(OH)2, β-Co(OH)2, and Co3O4 as catalysts, respectively. The dissolved Co2+ (0.15 mg L−1) corresponds to 0.24% of the total cobalt in Co2(OH)3Cl and has negligible influence on the TBPPA degradation. Co2(OH)3Cl shows long-term stability (longer than 9 months) with the high activity after the oxidation treatment. The high activity of Co2(OH)3Cl attributes to the Cl− enhanced reactivity of surface Co(II)OH. The coordinated Cl− not only enhances the ability of surface Co(II)OH for anchoring both HSO5 − and SO5 2− through the intermolecular hydrogen bond, but also improves electron transfer between Co(II) and PMS, leading to efficient generation of singlet oxygen for the TBPPA degradation.
