Abstract:Catalytic performances of Mn2O3 nanoparticles for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation in bisphenol A (BPA) degradation were comprehensively investigated in this study. Experimental results showed that 10 mg/L BPA could be 100% degraded within 20 min with the dosages of 0.2 g/L Mn2O3 and 0.1 mM PMS. Moreover, Mn2O3 showed remarkable activity in activation of PMS and excellent adaptability in various real water matrices, including river water, tap water and secondary effluents. Based on the radical detection and scavenging experiments, it was found that both radical and non-radical oxidation contributed to the degradation of BPA and O-1(2) was the dominant species in the degradation compared to (OH)-O-center dot, SO4 center dot- and O-2(center dot-). A total of 15 transformation products were identified by LC/MS-MS during BPA degradation in the Mn2O3/PMS system, and degradation pathways via three routes are proposed. Compared with lab-made catalysts reported in the literature, the Mn2O3 catalyst demonstrated its superiority in terms of its high TOC removal, low PMS consumption and fast degradation rate for BPA.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of removing endocrine disruptors in water environment, Bi 2 WO 6 @MXenes-NS（BM-NS） composite catalyst was synthesized by hydrothermal method, and bisphenol A（BPA） was degraded by activation of permonosulfate（PMS）. The morphology and crystal structure of the catalyst were characterized by SEM, TEM and XRD. The effects of different catalyst systems, PMS concentrations, solution pH and coexisting ions on the degradation of BPA were investigated. The results showed that when the concentration of MXenes-NS was 0.5%, the concentration of catalyst was 1 g/L, the concentration of PMS was 0.3 g/L, and the solution pH was 3.03, BM-NS/PMS system had a strong BPA degradation performance, and the removal rate reached 85.3% within 120 min. In addition, the effects of inorganic anions on BPA removal were in a sequence as follows: Cl - ＜H 2 PO - 4 ＜SO 2- 4 ＜HCO - 3 ≈NO - 3 . The removal rate of BPA remained 70.1% after 4 cycles. The results of the radical quenching experiment showed that SO - 4 · was the main active radical. Combined with LC-MS, the possible degradation pathway of BPA was proposed. The above experimental results indicated that the prepared BM-NS catalyst had a good application prospect in activating PMS to degrade BPA.
Highly Efficient Copper Doping LaFeO3 Perovskite for Bisphenol A Removal by Activating Peroxymonosulfate

Abstract:A series of copper doping LaFeO3 perovskite (LaCuxFe1−xO3, LCFO, x = 0.1, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.9) are successfully synthesized by the sol-gel method under mild conditions. In this study, it is applied for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for bisphenol A (BPA) removal. More than 92.6% of BPA was degraded within 30 min at 0.7 g/L of LCFO and 10.0 mM of PMS over a wide pH range with limited leaching of copper and iron ions. The physical–chemical properties of the catalysts were demonstrated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Furthermore, the effects of catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, initial pH value, and inorganic anions on the LCFO/PMS system were fully investigated. Quenching experiments were performed to verify the formation of reactive oxidant species, which showed that the radical reaction and mechanisms play a great role in the catalytic degradation of BPA. The perovskite LCFO is considered a stable, easy to synthesize, and efficient catalyst for the activation of PMS for wastewater treatment.
Stable Incorporation of MnOx Quantum Dots into N-doped Hollow Carbon: A Synergistic Peroxymonosulfate Activator for Enhanced Removal of Bisphenol A

Abstract:Manganese oxide (MnO)x with earth-abundance and low toxicity have received considerable interest for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) but suffer from poor catalytic activity and stability. Herein, a unique hybrid hollow structure with ultrasmall size MnOx quantum dots (QDs, 3 nm) homogeneously dispersed on N-doped porous carbon shells (denoted as MnOx/N-HPCS) was designed as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst. The ultrafine nanoscaling morphology of MnOx QDs enlarges its specific surface area (227.9 m(2)/g) for providing more active sites. The N-doped carbon (NC) shells can not only greatly improve the conductivity of the hybrid and effectively prevent the aggregation of MnOx QDs, but serve as metal-free active sites for Fenton-like reaction. While the hollow porous structure enables the fast transportation of reactants access to the full-exposure active sites. When evaluated as catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, the MnOx/N-HPCS hybrid outperformed other benchmark catalysts toward the removal of bisphenol A (BPA) with highest removal rate of 0.29 min(-1). Results showed that exceed 99% of BPA (10 mg L-1) was removed within 20 min at the dosage of 0.2 g L-1 PMS and 0.06 g L-1 MnOx/N-HPCS. Moreover, the mechanism of PMS activation by MnOx/N-HPCS was studied. The mixed valence states of Mn, the hydroxyl species induced complexation of equivalent to Mn((3+/4+))-PMS and the metal-free N-doped sites synergistically enhancing the generation of reactive oxygen species ((OH)-O-. and SO4.-). Furthermore, the MnOx/N-HPCS catalyst also displayed good reusability (successive 4 runs) with negligible Mn leaching (less than 2 mu g L-1). Together with the investigation of the application in real environment water samples (such as tap water and wastewater), we demonstrated this novel Mn-based AOPs catalyst with unique structure and high activity will hold great potential in environmental remediation.

Abstract:In this research, the CuFe2O4-CoFe2O4 metallic oxides catalyst (donated as CCF) was synthesized by solvothermal method and applied to degrade bisphenol A (BPA) by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The different influences containing initial PMS concentration, pH, catalyst dosage, coexisting ions and reaction temperature on the degradation efficiency of BPA were systematically investigated. The CCF exhibited 99.3% removal efficiency and 72.5% mineralization of BPA. Notably, compared with the reported metallic catalysts, CCF exhibited much lower amount of metal leaching during the degradation process. The superior catalytic activity and stability of CCF was attributed to the synergistic effects of Co2+/Co3+, Cu+/Cu2+ and Fe2+/Fe3+ redox cycles. The SO4 •− and •OH were detected by chemical scavenging and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests while SO4 •− might play a dominant role for BPA degradation. Furthermore, the catalytic mechanism was proposed and analyzed the toxicity of reaction system. The toxicity of BPA and its oxidation intermediates were predicted by ECOSAR model and activity inhibition experiments to demonstrate that BPA was ultimately mineralized as a non-toxic product. This study suggests that the prepared CCF is an efficient and environmentally friendly catalyst for activating PMS, which has an enormous potential application in practical waste water treatment.

Abstract:Cobalt oxide (CoO) could activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to remove pollutants but the catalytic performance was restricted by limited active sites and it was with risk of harmful cobalt ion leaching. In order to solve these problems, bimetallic oxides with package structure were researched by dispersing CoO nanoparticles on a stable support (magnesium oxide, MgO) via simple one-step coprecipitation method. Co-Mg bimetallic oxides with minute quantities of CoO and highly dispersed structure could efficiently activate PMS for degradation of bisphenol A (BPA). The catalytic properties of catalysts with different molar ratios of Co and Mg were evaluated. The optimal molar ratio (0.075:15) of Co and Mg was found in the Co-Mg bimetallic oxides, which could maximize its catalytic performance for PMS in a wide pH range. Influences of different systems, catalyst dosages, PMS concentrations, temperatures, initial pH values and mineralization rates were researched for BPA degradation. And the oxidation capacities to remove BPA in the different aqueous matrices were evaluated for the catalyst/PMS system. The addition of anions and nature organic matter (NOM) showed that there existed positive (Cl- and H2PO4-) and negative (NO3-, HCO3-, HPO42- and NOM) effects for BPA degradation. Additionally, main reactive radicals were certified by quenching experiments. Four successive experiments and evaluation of concentration of cobalt ion leaching illustrated good stability of the catalyst, which was related with its package structure. Finally, activation mechanism of PMS, proposed degradation pathways of BPA and acute toxicity of degradation intermediates of BPA were analyzed.

Abstract:Background LaCuMnOx (LCMO) perovskite was designed as an effective catalyst to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) to remove bisphenol A (BPA) in hypersaline wastewater. Results In the LCMO/PDS system, BPA (10 mg/L) was removed completely and the mineralization degree reached 74.9% in the presence of 0.12 g/L catalyst and 1.2 mM PDS. The BPA removal efficiency was still almost 100% even after five cycles. Metal ion leakage also indicated the stability of the catalytic system. •OH, SO4•−, 1O2, and O2•− all contributed to BPA removal, and O2•− accounted for the greatest contribution. The presence of oxygen vacancies (Vo··) on the surface of the catalyst was important for PDS activation and the formation of active species. In addition, the system could still maintain outstanding performance even when [Cl−] and [SO42−] were 100 g/L. CO32− and HCO3− inhibited BPA degradation greatly, even at very low concentrations. The inhibitory effect was related to changes in the pH of the solution caused by the addition of CO32− and HCO3−. This effect could be eliminated by adjusting the pH. Conclusion The system showed excellent catalytic performance, stability, and inorganic anion tolerance, indicating its potential for application in hypersaline wastewater treatment. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Abstract:Cost-effective and low-toxicity manganese oxides (MnOx) have been extensively used for environmental remediation. However, their unsatisfactory activity and intrinsically poor electronic conductivity hamper the application and leave considerable room for improvement. Utilizing defect engineering and morphology controlling, we herein designed MnO2−x rattle-type microspheres with plenty of oxygen-defective MnO2 nanoflakes vertically aligned on the surface (OD-MnO2−x-RM) as a novel peroxomonosulfate (PMS) activator for bisphenol A (BPA) removal. Benefiting from the proper presence of oxygen vacancies (OVs) and unique nanoarchitecture, the OD-MnO2−x-RM (40 min) outperformed all other benchmark catalysts [such as MnO2@MnCO3, MnO2-RM, OD-MnO2−x-RM (20, 60, and 80 min)]. The turnover frequency (TOF) of optimized OD-MnO2−x-RM catalyst reaches up to 83.3 min−1, making it one of the best-performing Mn-based catalysts ever reported for BPA removal via PMS activation. More interestingly, unlike other reports, 1O2, instead of OH and SO4−, was found to be the main reactive specie responsible for BPA oxidation. Various experimental and density functional theory (DFT) findings indicate that these surface oxygen-deficient sites with abundant localized electrons not only accelerate the interfacial electronic conduction and charge rearrangement but also favor chemisorption of PMS, however OVs in excess are superfluous and even counteractive for reaction kinetics. This structure arrangement simultaneously optimizes the active site exposure, changes the active species binding, transfer, and activation, which may pave a new path for rationally fabricating transition metal oxide-based catalysts for water treatment.

Abstract:In this study, novel Co-embedded hollow N-doped carbon polyhedrons, derived from ZIF-8@ZIF-67 core-shell structure, were synthesized and used for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) towards efficient bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. The contents of different N species, especially Co-N-x and graphitic N sites, were tuned by different calcination temperatures (800, 900, and 1000 degrees C). Characterization results demonstrated that hollow polyhedron with high graphitization degree and abundant porosity anchored numerous Co nanoparticles, which could enhance the catalytic performance. Compared to other as-prepared catalysts, Co/HNCP-900 (pyrolyzed at 900 degrees C) showed a more outstanding performance of PMS activation towards BPA degradation, and 95.1 % of BPA (20 mg/L) could be removed within 3 min. Abundant Co-Nx sites were a critical factor to induce the reaction process. Based on trapping, radical scavenger, and electrochemical analysis experiments, a nonradical process (singlet oxygen and direct electron transfer) was proposed to play the dominant role in BPA degradation. Benefiting from the nonradical process, BPA degradation efficiency almost remained stable either in a wide pH range (2.5-8.0) or in the presence of coexisting ions and natural organic matter. The findings of this study will elucidate a new opportunity for improving environmental remediation.

Abstract:Perovskite has attracted a lot of attention in the area of present-day environmental catalysis because of its cheap cost, excellent stability, great catalytic activity, varied structure, and significant transformation flexibility. In order to remove organic contaminants from wastewater, researchers have been experimenting with combining perovskite catalysts with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Herein present study, LaCoO 3 was synthesized and calcined at 450, 650, and 850 °C (LC450, LC650, and LC850), and the connections between their surface features and crystalline assembly to catalytic performance were thoroughly explored to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in order to degrade aqueous organic contaminants. Further, the catalysts were characterized by XRD, FTIR, FSEM, and TEM, and their catalytic efficiency was investigated. The Co-O bond length is recommended as a biomarker for PMS activation because it strongly influences the Co 2+ /Co 3+ redox capability, regulating the total PMS activation. LC850/PMS has demonstrated the highest degradation efficiency (79%), with k app value 0.102 min −1 . Further modification of these types of perovskite catalysts might be very feasible and promising to degrading organic pollutants.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate-assisted advanced oxidation processes (PMS-AOPs) catalyzed by single-atom catalysts have become state-of-the-art technologies for environmental remediation. In this study, Cobalt single-atom catalysts supported by graphitic carbon nitride (SA-CoCN) containing Co-N-4 active sites were developed as PMS activators for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. BPA (10 mg L-1) was completely removed with 0.1 g L-1 SA-CoCN and 0.5 mM PMS, and this process was pH-dependent. Instead of the widely recognized generation of free radicals (SO4 center dot- and center dot OH), high-valent cobalt [Co(IV)] and singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) were the predominant reactive species for pollutant degradation under acidic and alkaline conditions, respectively. The conversion of methyl phenyl sulfoxide (PMSO) to methyl phenyl sulfone (PMSO2), electron paramagnetic resonance tests and radical scavenger experiments were used to probe these reactive species. According to density functional theory calculations, the formation of Co(IV) and O-1(2) was thermodynamically favorable, and the generation pathways of Co(IV) and O-1(2) were further discussed. This study provides an insight into the single-atom cobalt catalyst/PMS process.
Highly Efficient Activation of Peroxymonosulphate by Co and Cu Co-Doped Sawdust Biochar for Ultra-Fast Removal of Bisphenol A

Abstract:The rapid, efficient, and thorough degradation of Bisphenol A (BPA) is challenging. In this study, we prepared an effective peroxymonosulphate (PMS) activation catalyst derived from sawdust containing calcium carbonate. The Co and Cu co-doped sawdust biochar (CoO/CuO@CBC) catalyst could activate PMS quickly, and the degradation rate of BPA reached 99.3% in 5 min, while the rate constant was approximately 30 times higher than in the CBC/PMS and CoCuOx/PMS systems. Moreover, the interaction between CoO, CuO, and CBC endows the CoO/CuO@CBC catalyst with excellent catalytic performance under different conditions, such as initial pH, temperature, water matrix, inorganic anions, and humic acid, which maintained fast PMS activation via the cyclic transformation of Cu and Co for BPA degradation. The results demonstrated that both the radical (•O2− and •SO4−) and non-radical (1O2) pathways participate in the degradation of BPA in the CoO/CuO@CBC/PMS system. The efficient and stable degradation over a wide range of pH, temperature, and aqueous matrices indicates the potential application of the CoO/CuO@CBC catalyst.

Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA) has received increasing attention due to its long-term industrial application and persistence in environmental pollution. Iron-based carbon catalyst activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) shows a good prospect for effective elimination of recalcitrant contaminants in water. Herein, considering the problem about the leaching of iron ions and the optimization of heteroatoms doping, the iron, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped tremella-like carbon catalyst (Fe-NS@C) was rationally designed using very little iron, S-C3N4 and low-cost chitosan (CS) via the impregnation-calcination method. The as-prepared Fe-NS@C exhibited excellent performance for complete removal of BPA (20 mg/L) by activating PMS with the high kinetic constant (1.492 min-1) in 15 min. Besides, the Fe-NS@C/PMS system not only possessed wide pH adaptation and high resistance to environmental interference, but also maintained an excellent degradation efficiency on different pollutants. Impressively, increased S-C3N4 doping amount modulated the contents of different N species in Fe-NS@C, and the catalytic activity of Fe-NS@C-1-x was visibly enhanced with increasing S-C3N4 contents, verifying pyridine N and Fe-Nx as main active sites in the system. Meanwhile, thiophene sulfur (C-S-C) as active sites played an auxiliary role. Furthermore, quenching experiment, EPR analysis and electrochemical test proved that surface-bound radicals (·OH and SO4⋅-) and non-radical pathways worked in the BPA degradation (the former played a dominant role). Finally, possible BPA degradation route were proposed. This work provided a promising way to synthesize the novel Fe, N and S co-doping carbon catalyst for degrading organic pollutants with low metal leaching and high catalytic ability.

Abstract:In this work, a novel material of Co Nanoparticles anchored on MnO nanorods wrapped in carbon layers (Co/MnO-X@C) is successfully synthesized and applied to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for Bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. More than 98% of BPA is removed by Co/MnO-0.32@C within 1 min. The reaction rate constant of Co/MnO-0.32@C (3.516 min−1) is much larger than Co@C (1.076 min−1) and MnO@C (0.006 min−1). The leached Co ions from Co/MnO-0.32@C (0.97 mg/L) is only 1/5 of Co@C (4.96 mg/L) after the catalytic reaction. The high activity and low leaching rate of Co indicate the synergistic effect between Co and MnO during PMS activation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal MnO modified with Co is favorable for the adsorption and activation of PMS and the release of reactive oxidation species (ROSs). The XPS results indicate the presence of Co(III)/Mn(II) redox cycle, while the generated Co(II) and Mn(III) is used for PMS activation, thus proving the synergistic effect further. The open circuit potential (OCP) test proves the direct electron-transfer (DET) exists on the surface of Co/MnO-X@C. Therefore, both radical and nonradical processes are present in the (Co/MnO-0.32@C)/PMS system. This work provides effective materials and synergistic theory between Co and MnO for environmental remediation.

Abstract:A novel Co3O4-Bi2O3 catalyst was synthesized by a microwave-assisted co-precipitation method and systematically characterized with multifarious techniques to investigate its crystallinity, morphology and chemical state of Co3O4-Bi2O3. The catalytic activity of Co3O4-Bi2O3 in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was assessed through bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. The results indicated that the catalyst synthesized by microwave irradiation and calcination treatment of 200 degrees C exhibited good stability, high catalytic activity and mineralization percentage of BPA degradation under a broad pH range in the Co3O4-Bi2O3/PMS system. The BPA degradation in aqueous solution of 20 mg.L (1) reached almost 100% within 30 min by using 0.3 g.L (1) of catalyst and [PMS]/[BPA] = 5 at pH ranging from 3.0-9.0. The activation energy (Ea = 50.59 kJ.mol (1)) was calculated under different reaction temperatures, indicating that the catalytic reaction occurred easily in the Co3O4-Bi2O3/PMS/BPA system. According to the characterizations of catalyst, as well as the dissolving and trapping studies, it was illustrated that BPA molecules were degraded mainly by the surface-bound SO4 center dot radicals. At the same time, the increase of cobalt (III) content was caused by the catalytic reaction between PMS and cobalt (II) on the surface of catalyst. Overall, the study could lay groundwork toward the catalyst-activated peroxymonosulfate-based oxidation system in wastewater treatment. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes are perceived as a novel strategy for water purification. However, designing an efficient catalyst with a low metal leaching rate remains challenging. Here, under palygorskite (PAL) mediation, 16%-CoCu0.4Fe1.6O4@PAL (16%-CCFO@PAL) was constructed, exhibiting ample oxygen vacancies (V-O) and low metal leakage. The VO was confirmed by systematic characterizations and theoretical calculations. The catalyst showed the efficient catalytic capacity for PMS by dual-path (i.e., metal sites and VO) activation. Large amounts of SO4 center dot-, center dot OH, and O-1(2) were produced, greatly destroying bisphenol S (BPS). BPS removal was greater than 99% within 25 min in the 16%-CCFO@PAL/PMS system. At the metal sites, PMS was activated under the synergistic effects of Co(II)/Co(III), Fe(II)/Fe(III), and Cu(I)/Cu(II) pairs and electron transfer. In addition to metal sites, the VO was also an activation center for PMS, which mainly captured the O-I atom in [H-O-I-O-II-SO3]-, donating an electron to OI and promoting SO4 center dot- generation. The interfacial reaction mechanism was explored by in situ tests, and a dual-path activation mechanism was proposed. This work provides a new perspective for VO-assisted PMS activation for water treatment.

Abstract:A high-efficient, low-cost, and eco-friendly catalyst is highly desired to activate peroxides for environmental remediation. Due to the potential synergistic effect between bimetallic oxides' two different metal cations, these oxides exhibit superior performance in the catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). In this work, novel Mn1.8Fe1.2O4 nanospheres were synthesized and used to activate PMS for the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA), a typical refractory pollutant. The catalytic performance of the Mn1.8Fe1.2O4 nanospheres was substantially greater than that of the Mn/Fe monometallic oxides and remained efficient in a wide pH range from 4 to 10. More importantly, a synergistic effect between solid-state Mn and Fe was identified in control experiments with Mn3O4 and Fe3O4. Mn was inferred to be the primary active site in the surface of the Mn1.8Fe1.2O4 nanospheres, while Fe(III) was found to play a key role in the synergism with Mn by acting as the main adsorption site for the reaction substrates. Both sulfate and hydroxyl radicals were generated in the PMS activation process. The intermediates of BPA degradation were identified and the degradation pathways were proposed. This work is expected to help to elucidate the rational design and efficient synthesis of bimetallic materials for PMS activation.
Activating Peroxymonosulfate by N and O Co-doped Porous Carbon for Efficient BPA Degradation: A Re-visit to the Removal Mechanism and the Effects of Surface Unpaired Electrons

Abstract:In this study, N and O co-doping carbon materials with porous structure (NOPC-x) were applied to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for bisphenol (BPA) degradation and the underlying effects in affecting NOPC-x activity were revealed. Electrochemical characterization, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests, quenching and PMS adsorption experiments were applied to clarify the mechanism of BPA degradation. It's found that BPA can be completely removed within 20 min (k(obs) = 0.30 min(-1)) in the NOPC/PMS system depending on the electron transfer path with the necessity of moderate surfaced unpaired electrons for electrons delivery, which could be regulated by the modifier dosage. However, excessive surfaced unpaired electrons were unfavorable to PMS adsorption, resulting in deterioration of BPA degradation. This study indicates that controlling the amount of surfaced unpaired electrons in an appropriate range is essential to ensure the carbonaceous materials activity in PMS activation to obtain a satisfactory BPA degradation.
