(a) For all connected compact Lie groups H and all continuous homomorphisms phi, phi' V H -> G, if phi(h) and phi'(h) are conjugate in G for all h epsilon H, then phi and phi' are G-conjugate. Abstract:A general overview of the phenomenon of automatic continuity of homomorphisms between Polish groups is given. In particular, we study variants and improvements of the closed graph theorem, applying these to the problem of continuity of universally measurable homomorphisms and also to gauge the amount of choice needed to construct discontinuous homomorphisms between Polish groups. Furthermore, we provide a simple proof of automatic continuity in the context of homeomorphism groups of compact manifolds and a complete reworking of automatic continuity theory in the context of isometry groups of highly homogeneous complete metric structures.

Abstract:It is proved that the infinitesimal generator A of a strongly continuous semigroup of Linear operators on a Hilbert space also generates a strongly continuous group if and only if the resolvent of -A, (lambda + A)(-1), is also a bounded function on some right-hand-side half plane of complex numbers, and converges strongly to zero as the real part of lambda tends to infinity. An application to a partial differential equation is given.

Abstract Group Automorphisms of Two-Step Nilpotent Lie Groups and Partial Automatic Continuity

Abstract:Any abstract (not necessarily continuous) group automorphism of a simple, compact Lie group must be continuous due to Cartan (1930) and van der Waerden (1933). The purpose of this paper is to study a similar question in nilpotent Lie groups. For many simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie groups, we show any abstract group automorphism is continuous "up to discontinuity due to the center and field automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}$." Such groups include (1) a generic simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie group of type $(p,q)$ with $p$ large, (2) all twelve simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie groups of dimensions 6 or less except for one example, and (3) Iwasawa N-groups of simple Lie groups of rank 1, i.e., "Heisenberg groups". To our knowledge, the exception in (2) is the first nilpotent Lie group whose automorphism group is not of the type described above. In the proof for (3), we use tools from Riemannian geometry, even though the result is purely algebraic. All of the three cases are derived from one key result that gives a sufficient condition for the automorphism group to be of the type described above.

On the commutator length of compact Lie groups

Abstract:In this short note we show that the path-connected component of the identity of the derived subgroup of a compact Lie group consists just of commutators. We also discuss an application of our main result to the homotopy type of the classifying space for commutativity for a compact Lie group whose path-connected component of the identity is abelian.

Abstract:Classical theorems from the early 20th century state that any Haar measurable homomorphism between locally compact groups is continuous. In particular, any Lebesgue-measurable homomorphism $\phi:\mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}$ is of the form $\phi(x)=ax$ for some $a \in \mathbb{R}$. In this short note, we prove that any Lebesgue measurable function $\phi:\mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}$ that vanishes under any $d+1$ ``difference operators'' is a polynomial of degree at most $d$. More generally, we prove the continuity of any Haar measurable polynomial map between locally compact groups, in the sense of Leibman. We deduce the above result as a direct consequence of a theorem about the automatic continuity of cocycles.

Abstract:Let $IET(\mathbb{S}^{1})$ be the group of interval exchange transformation of $\mathbb{S}^{1}$ and $\mathcal{AC}_{+}(\mathbb{S}^{1})$ be the group of absolutely continuous preserving orientation bijection with inverse absolutely continuous. We denote by $\mathcal{ACI}$ the group generated by $IET(\mathbb{S}^{1})$ and $\mathcal{AC}_{+}(\mathbb{S}^{1})$. Given a suitable distance on $\mathcal{ACI}$, we classify all continuous homomorphisms $\rho:\mathbb{R} \to \mathcal{ACI}$. More precisely, $\rho$ is conjugated to a continuous homomorphism $\hat{\rho}:\mathbb{R} \to \mathcal{AC}_{+}(\uplus_{i}(\mathbb{S}^{1})_{i})$.

Abstract:Let $\pi$ be a discrete group, and let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group. $\mathrm{Hom}(\pi,G)_0$ denotes the null-component of the space of homomorphisms from $\pi$ to $G$, and $\mathrm{map}_*(B\pi,BG)_0$ denotes the null-component of the space of maps from $B\pi$ to $BG$. Since the classifying space functor is continuous, there is a continuous map $\Theta\colon\mathrm{Hom}(\pi,G)_0\to\mathrm{map}_*(B\pi,BG)_0$. Atiyah and Bott studied this map when $\pi$ is a surface group, and proved surjectivity in rational cohomology. In this paper, we obtain the condition that the map $\Theta$ is surjective or not in rational cohomology when $\pi$ is $\mathbf{Z}^m$ for $m\geq 3$ and $G$ is a compact connected Lie group.

Abstract:For $p\in [1,\infty]$, we define a smooth manifold structure on the set of absolutely continuous functions $\gamma\colon [a,b]\to N$ with $L^p$-derivatives for each smooth manifold $N$ modeled on a sequentially complete locally convex topological vector space which admits a local addition. Smoothness of natural mappings between spaces of absolutely continuous functions is discussed. For $1\leq p <\infty$ and $r\in \mathbb{N}$ we show that the right half-Lie groups $\text{Diff}_K^r(\mathbb{R})$ and $\text{Diff}^r(M)$ are $L^p$-semiregular. Here $K$ is a compact subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $M$ is a compact smooth manifold. For the preceding examples, the evolution map $\text{Evol}$ is continuous.

Abstract:Let ${\sf G}$ be a locally compact group, $\mathscr C\overset{q}{\to}{\sf G}$ a Fell bundle and $\mathfrak B=L^1({\sf G}\,\vert\,\mathscr C)$ the algebra of integrable cross-sections associated to the bundle. We give conditions that guarantee the automatic continuity of an intertwining operator $\theta:\mathcal X_1\to\mathcal X_2$, where $\mathcal X_1$ is a Banach $\mathfrak B$-bimodule and $\mathcal X_2$ is a weak Banach $\mathfrak B$-bimodule, in terms of the continuity ideal of $\theta$. We provide examples of algebras where this conditions are met, both in the case of derivations and algebra morphisms. In particular, we show that, if ${\sf G}$ is infinite, finitely-generated, has polynomial growth and $\alpha$ is a free (partial) action of ${\sf G}$ on the compact space $X$, then every homomorphism of $\ell^1_\alpha({\sf G},C(X))$ into a Banach algebra is automatically continuous.

Automatic continuity of pure mapping class groups

Abstract:We completely classify the orientable infinite-type surfaces $S$ such that $\operatorname{PMap}(S)$, the pure mapping class group, has automatic continuity. This classification includes surfaces with noncompact boundary. In the case of surfaces with finitely many ends and no noncompact boundary components, we prove the mapping class group $\operatorname{Map}(S)$ does not have automatic continuity. We also completely classify the surfaces such that $\overline{\operatorname{PMap}_c(S)}$, the subgroup of the pure mapping class group composed of elements with representatives that can be approximated by compactly supported homeomorphisms, has automatic continuity. In some cases when $\overline{\operatorname{PMap}_c(S)}$ has automatic continuity, we show any homomorphism from $\overline{\operatorname{PMap}_c(S)}$ to a countable group is trivial.

A differentiable monoid of smooth maps on Lie groupoids

Abstract:In this article we investigate a monoid of smooth mappings on the space of arrows of a Lie groupoid and its group of units. The group of units turns out to be an infinite-dimensional Lie group which is regular in the sense of Milnor. Furthermore, this group is closely connected to the group of bisections of the Lie groupoid. Under suitable conditions, i.e. the source map of the Lie groupoid is proper, one also obtains a differentiable structure on the monoid and can identify the bisection group as a Lie subgroup of its group of units. Finally, relations between groupoids associated to the underlying Lie groupoid and subgroups of the monoid are obtained. The key tool driving the investigation is a generalisation of a result by A. Stacey which we establish in the present article. This result, called the Stacey-Roberts Lemma, asserts that pushforwards of submersions yield submersions between the infinite-dimensional manifolds of mappings.

Abstract:Given a locally compact group bundle, we show that the system of the Plancherel weights of their C*-algebras is lower semi-continuous. As a corollary, we obtain that the dual Haar sytem of a continuous Haar system of a locally compact abelian group bundle is also continuous.

Abstract:We give several characterizations of order continuous vector lattice homomorphisms between Archimedean vector lattices. We reduce the proofs of some of the equivalences to the case of composition operators between vector lattices of continuous functions, and so we obtain a characterization of order continuity of such operators. Motivated by this, we investigate various properties of the sublattices of the space $C\left(X\right)$, where $X$ is a Tychonoff topological space. We also obtain several characterizations of a regular sublattice of a vector lattice, and show that the closure of a regular sublattice of a Banach lattice is also regular.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a Riemann surface with a non-abelian fundamental group and for each integer $k \geq 2$ or $k=\infty$, let $\widetilde{S}_{k}$ be its $k$-homology cover. The surface $\widetilde{S}_{k}$ admits a group of conformal automorphisms $M_{k} \cong {\rm H}_{1}(S;{\mathbb Z}_{k})$, where ${\mathbb Z}_{\infty}:={\mathbb Z}$, such that $S=\widetilde{S}_{k}/M_{k}$. If $L \leq {\rm Aut}(S)$, then there is a short exact sequence $1 \to M_{k} \to \widetilde{L}_{k} \to L \to 1$, where $\widetilde{L}_{k}$ is a subgroup of conformal automorphisms of $\widetilde{S}_{k}$. In general, the above exact sequence does not need to be split. This paper investigates situations when the splitting is or is not obtained.

Abstract:Half Lie groups exist only in infinite dimensions: They are smooth manifolds and topological groups such that right translations are smooth, but left translations are merely required to be continuous. The main examples are groups of $H^s$ or $C^k$ diffeomorphisms and semidirect products of a Lie group with kernel an infinite dimensional representation space. Here, we investigate mainly Banach half-Lie groups, the groups of their $C^k$-elements, extensions, and right invariant strong Riemannian metrics on them: surprisingly the full Hopf--Rinow theorem holds, which is wrong in general even for Hilbert manifolds.

Continuity of the stabilizer map and irreducible extensions

Abstract:Let $G$ be a locally compact group. For every $G$-flow $X$, one can consider the stabilizer map $x \mapsto G_x$, from $X$ to the space $\mathrm{Sub}(G)$ of closed subgroups of $G$. This map is not continuous in general. We prove that if one passes from $X$ to the universal irreducible extension of $X$, the stabilizer map becomes continuous. This result provides, in particular, a common generalization of a theorem of Frolík (that the set of fixed points of a homeomorphism of an extremally disconnected compact space is open) and a theorem of Veech (that the action of a locally compact group on its greatest ambit is free). It also allows to naturally associate to every $G$-flow $X$ a stabilizer $G$-flow $\mathrm{S}_G(X)$ in the space $\mathrm{Sub}(G)$, which generalizes the notion of stabilizer uniformly recurrent subgroup associated to a minimal $G$-flow introduced by Glasner and Weiss.
