Abstract:We examine subgroups of locally compact groups that are continuous homomorphic images of connected Lie groups and we give a criterion for being such an image. We also provide a new characterisation of Lie groups and a characterisation of groups that are images of connected locally compact groups.

Abstract:Let U be a Banach Lie group and a compact subgroup. We show that closed Lie subgroups of U contained in sufficiently small neighborhoods are compact, and conjugate to subgroups of G by elements close to ; this generalizes a well-known result of Montgomery and Zippin's from finite- to infinite-dimensional Lie groups. Along the way, we also prove an approximate counterpart to Jordan's theorem on finite subgroups of general linear groups: finite subgroups of U contained in sufficiently small neighborhoods have normal abelian subgroups of index bounded in terms of alone. Additionally, various spaces of compact subgroups of U , equipped with the Hausdorff metric attached to a complete metric on U , are shown to be analytic Banach manifolds; this is the case for both (a) compact groups of a given, fixed dimension, or (b) compact (possibly disconnected) semisimple subgroups. Finally, we also prove that the operation of taking the centralizer (or normalizer) of a compact subgroup of U is continuous (respectively upper semicontinuous) in the appropriate sense.

(a) For all connected compact Lie groups H and all continuous homomorphisms phi, phi' V H -> G, if phi(h) and phi'(h) are conjugate in G for all h epsilon H, then phi and phi' are G-conjugate. Abstract:Let $U$ be a finite dimentional vector space over $\mathbb R$ or $\mathbb C$, and let $\rho:G\to GL(U)$ be a representation of a connected Lie group $G$. A linear subspace $V\subset U$ is called universal if every orbit of $G$ meets $V$. We study universal subspaces for Lie groups, especially compact Lie groups. Jinpeng and Doković approached universality for compact groups through a certain topological obstruction. They showed that the non-vanishing of the obstruction class is sufficient for the universality of $V$, and asked whether it is also necessary under certain conditions. In this article, we show that the answer to the question is negative in general, but we discuss some important situations where the answer is positive. We show that if $G$ is solvable and $\rho:G\to GL(U)$ is a complex representation, then the only universal complex subspace is $U$ itself. We also investigate the question of universality for a Levi subgroup.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{U}$ be a Banach Lie group and $S\subseteq \mathbb{U}$ an ad-bounded subset thereof, in the sense that there is a uniform bound on the adjoint operators induced by elements of $S$ on the Lie algebra of $\mathbb{U}$. We prove that (1) $S$-valued continuous maps from compact groups to $\mathbb{U}$ sufficiently close to being morphisms are uniformly close to morphisms; and (2) for any Lie subgroup $\mathbb{G}\le \mathbb{U}$ there is an identity neighborhood $U\ni 1\in \mathbb{U}$ so that $\mathbb{G}\cdot U\cap S$-valued morphisms (embeddings) from compact groups into $\mathbb{U}$ are close to morphisms (respectively embeddings) into $\mathbb{G}$. This recovers and generalizes results of Turing's to the effect that (a) Lie groups arbitrarily approximable by finite subgroups have abelian identity component and (b) if a Lie group is approximable in this fashion and has a faithful $d$-dimensional representation then it is also so approximable by finite groups with the same property. Another consequence is a strengthening of a prior result stating that finite subgroups in a Banach Lie group sufficiently close to a given compact subgroup thereof admit a finite upper bound on the smallest indices of their normal abelian subgroups (an approximate version of Jordan's theorem on finite subgroups of linear groups).

Abstract:Let $\pi$ be a discrete group, and let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group. $\mathrm{Hom}(\pi,G)_0$ denotes the null-component of the space of homomorphisms from $\pi$ to $G$, and $\mathrm{map}_*(B\pi,BG)_0$ denotes the null-component of the space of maps from $B\pi$ to $BG$. Since the classifying space functor is continuous, there is a continuous map $\Theta\colon\mathrm{Hom}(\pi,G)_0\to\mathrm{map}_*(B\pi,BG)_0$. Atiyah and Bott studied this map when $\pi$ is a surface group, and proved surjectivity in rational cohomology. In this paper, we obtain the condition that the map $\Theta$ is surjective or not in rational cohomology when $\pi$ is $\mathbf{Z}^m$ for $m\geq 3$ and $G$ is a compact connected Lie group.

Abstract:Continuing our research on extensions of locally compact quantum groups, we give a classification of all cocycle matched pairs of Lie algebras in small dimensions and prove that all of them can be exponentiated to cocycle matched pairs of Lie groups. Hence, all of them give rise to locally compact quantum groups by the cocycle bicrossed product construction. We also clarify the notion of an extension of locally compact quantum groups by relating it to the concept of a closed normal quantum subgroup and the quotient construction. Finally, we describe the infinitesimal objects of locally compact quantum quantum groups with 2 and 3 generators - Hopf *-algebras and Lie bialgebras.

Abstract:Half Lie groups exist only in infinite dimensions: They are smooth manifolds and topological groups such that right translations are smooth, but left translations are merely required to be continuous. The main examples are groups of $H^s$ or $C^k$ diffeomorphisms and semidirect products of a Lie group with kernel an infinite dimensional representation space. Here, we investigate mainly Banach half-Lie groups, the groups of their $C^k$-elements, extensions, and right invariant strong Riemannian metrics on them: surprisingly the full Hopf--Rinow theorem holds, which is wrong in general even for Hilbert manifolds.

Abstract:Let G be a real reductive group with an involution σ on it. Let H be an open subgroup of Gσ with a character χ on it. Associated to a “theta stable”, “σ-split” parabolic subalgebra, and using the Zuckerman functor, we construct representations of G together with χ-equivariant linear functionals on them. We apply this construction to prove a non-vanishing hypothesis of H. Grobner and A. Raghuram in the study of algebraicity of critical L-values.

Abstract:We give a new method for manufacturing complete minimal submanifolds of compact Lie groups and their homogeneous quotient spaces. For this we make use of harmonic morphisms and basic representation theory of Lie groups. We then apply our method to construct many examples of compact minimal submanifolds of the special unitary groups.

Abstract:This paper studies virtual constraints on Lie groups. Virtual constraints are invariant relations imposed on a control system via feedback. In this work, we introduce the notion of \textit{virtual constraints on Lie groups}, in particular, \textit{virtual nonholonomic constraints on Lie groups}, in a geometric framework. More precisely, this object is a controlled invariant subspace associated with an affine connection mechanical control system on the Lie algebra associated with the Lie group which is the configuration space of the system. We demonstrate the existence and uniqueness of a control law defining a virtual nonholonomic constraint and we characterize the trajectories of the closed-loop system as solutions of a mechanical system associated with an induced constrained connection. Moreover, we characterize the reduced dynamics for nonholonomic systems in terms of virtual nonholonomic constraints, i.e., we characterize when can we obtain reduced nonholonomic dynamics from virtual nonholonomic constraints. We illustrate the theory with some examples and present simulation results for an application.

Topological Properties of Almost Abelian Groups

Abstract:An almost Abelian Lie group is a non-Abelian Lie group with a codimension 1 Abelian subgroup. We show that all discrete subgroups of complex simply connected almost Abelian groups are finitely generated. The topology of connected almost Abelian Lie groups is studied by expressing each connected almost Abelian Lie group as a quotient of its universal covering group by a discrete normal subgroup. We then prove that no complex connected almost Abelian group is compact, and give conditions for the compactness of connected subgroups of such groups. Towards studying the homotopy type of complex connected almost Abelian groups, we investigate the maximal compact subgroups of such groups.

Abstract:We start by an original investigation on subgroups of (even infinite) direct sums in the first 4 sections, that largely generalizes Remak's known theorem; inspired by that general picture we have elsewhere extended this elementary "virtual" diagrammatic situation (in diagrammatic length 2 meaning set-theoretic fixation of vertices) by generalizing to the notion of "virtuality" in module extensions and diagrams in modular representation theory. Our first approach starts with an appropriately defined equivalence relation, which is precisely what allows for treating the confusing case of multiple factors, thus giving a deeper insight into the structure of such subgroups. Several applications and new techniques arising from that approach are examined, even ones concerning basic properties of homomorphisms, extending well-known elementary ones.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the notion of m-normal subgroups and show that the m-normal subgroups of connect locally compact groups and that of compact groups are closely related to Lie groups. As applications, we extend Theorem 3.8 in [D. Peng and W. He, Lower continuous topological groups, Topol. Appl. 265 (2019)] by giving a lower continuity criterion for dense subgroups of arbitrary topological groups. It is shown that lower continuity is preserved under taking topological products. It is also shown that an infinite compact group is hereditarily lower continuous if and only if the normalizer of every non-trivial finite subgroup is finite.

Abstract:. Minimal groups are the Hausdorﬀ topological groups G satisfying the open mapping theorem with respect to continuous isomorphisms, i.e., every continuous isomorphism G (cid:47) (cid:47) H , with a Hausdorﬀ topological group H , is a topological isomorphism. A topological group ( G, τ ) is called locally minimal if there exists a neighbourhood V of the identity such that for every Hausdorﬀ group topology σ ≤ τ with V ∈ σ one has σ = τ . Minimal groups, as well as locally compact groups, are locally minimal. According to a well known theorem of Prodanov every subgroup of an inﬁnite compact abelian group K is minimal if and only if K is isomorphic to the group Z p of p -adic integers for some prime p . We ﬁnd a remarkable connection of local minimality to Lie groups and p -adic numbers by means of the following results extending Prodanov’s theorem: every subgroup of a locally compact abelian group K is locally minimal if and only if K is either a Lie group or K has an open subgroup isomorphic to Z p for some prime p . In the nonabelian case we prove that all subgroups of a connected locally compact group are locally minimal if and only if K is a Lie group, resolving in the positive Problem 7.49 from [ ? ].
Characterisation of distal actions of automorphisms on the space of one-parameter subgroups of Lie groups

Abstract:For a connected Lie group $G$ and an automorphism $T$ of $G$, we consider the action of $T$ on Sub$_G$, the compact space of closed subgroups of $G$ endowed with the Chabauty topology. We study the action of $T$ on Sub$^p_G$, the closure in Sub$_G$ of the set of closed one-parameter subgroups of $G$. We relate the distality of the $T$-action on Sub$^p_G$ with that of the $T$-action on $G$ and characterise the same in terms of compactness of the closed subgroup generated by $T$ in Aut$(G)$ when $T$ acts distally on the maximal central torus and $G$ is not a vector group. We extend these results to the action of subgroups ${\mathcal H}$ of Aut$(G)$ and equate the distal action of any closed subgroup ${\mathcal H}$ on Sub$^p_G$ with that of every element in ${\mathcal H}$. Moreover, we show that a connected Lie group $G$ acts distally on Sub$^p_G$ by conjugation if and only if $G$ is either compact or it is isomorphic to a direct product of a compact group and a vector group. Some of our results extend those of Shah and Yadav.

Abstract:We study infinite approximate subgroups of soluble Lie groups. Generalising a theorem of Fried and Goldman we show that approximate subgroups are close, in a sense to be defined, to genuine connected subgroups. Building up on this result we prove a structure theorem for approximate lattices in soluble Lie groups. This extends to soluble Lie groups a theorem about quasi-crystals due to Yves Meyer.

Abstract:Hilbert--Lie groups are Lie groups whose Lie algebra is a real Hilbert space whose scalar product is invariant under the adjoint action. These infinite-dimensional Lie groups are the closest relatives to compact Lie groups. Here we study unitary representations of these groups from various perspectives. First, we address norm-continuous, also called bounded, representations: they are well-known for simple groups, but the general picture is more complicated. Our first main result is a characterization of the discrete decomposability of all bounded representations in terms of boundedness of the set of coroots. We also show that bounded representations of type II and III exist if the set of coroots is unbounded. Second, we use covariance with respect to a one-parameter group of automorphisms to implement some regularity. Here we develop some perturbation theory based on half Lie groups that reduces matters to the case where a ``maximal torus'' is fixed, so that compatible weight decompositions can be studied. Third, we extend the context to projective representations which are covariant for a one-parameter group of automorphisms. Here important families of representations arise from ``bounded extremal weights'', and for these the corresponding central extensions can be determined explicitly, together with all one-parameter groups for which a covariant extension exists.
