Abstract:The issue of preserving carbonatic stones of cultural heritage (CH) restored in the past that have undergone new decay phenomena is strongly emerging and conservation science has not yet found a reliable solution. In this paper, we propose the application of synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction computed tomography (XRDCT) to explore the effects of using inorganic-mineral products (ammonium oxalate; ammonium phosphate) in sequence as a novel, compatible and effective re-treatment approach to consolidate decayed carbonatic stones already treated with inorganic-mineral treatments. High-quality XRDCT datasets were used to qualitatively/quantitatively investigate and 3D localize the complex mixture of crystalline phases formed after the conservation re-treatments within a porous carbonatic stone substrate. The XRDCT reconstruction images and the structural refinements of XRD patterns with the Rietveld methods showed that the phase composition of reaction products, their volume distribution, and weight fraction vary as a function of the treatment sequence and penetration depth. The high potential of XRDCT allows (i) assessment of peculiar trends of each treatment/treatment sequence; (ii) exploration of the reaction steps of the sequential treatments and (iii) demonstration of the consolidating effect of inorganic re-treatments, non-destructively and at the micron scale. Above all, our study (i) provides new analytical tools to support the conservation choices, (ii) showcases new analytical possibilities for XRDCT in conservation science, including in investigations of CH materials and decay processes, and (iii) opens up new perspectives in analytical chemistry and material characterisation for the non-destructive and non-invasive analysis of reactions within heterogeneous polycrystalline systems.

Abstract:Understanding the effects of consolidating inorganic mineral treatments on carbonate stones of cultural heritage, and on the nature and distribution of newly formed products within the matrix, poses a significant challenge in Heritage Science and Conservation Science. Existing analytical methods often fail to deliver spatial and compositional insights into the newly formed crystalline phases with the appropriate high lateral resolution. In this study, we explore the capabilities and limitations of synchrotron radiation (SR) micro-X-ray powder diffraction (μXRPD) mapping combined with micro-X-ray fluorescence (μXRF) to give insight into compounds formed following the application of ammonium oxalate (AmOx) and diammonium phosphate-based (DAP) solutions on porous carbonate stone. Ultimately, the integration of μXRPD mapping and μXRF analysis proved itself a powerful asset in providing precise qualitative and quantitative data on the newly formed phases, in the case of both calcium oxalates (CaOxs) and calcium phosphates (CaPs), and their complex stratigraphic distribution, thus opening a new route for applications to a more comprehensive study of inorganic treatments applied to carbonate substrates.

Abstract:In this research, a comprehensive multi-technique analysis, including synchrotron-based X-ray micro-computed tomography, is used to visualize the microstructure of alteration in a very particular Roman glass fragment, in which millennia of corrosion history have not significantly impacted the integrity of the fragment itself. This exceptionally rare occurrence has allowed for the maximization of meaningful data acquisition, by examining the alteration structures from the macro to the nanoscale. This study elucidates the intricate mechanisms underlying glass corrosion when in contact with soil, providing quantitative data and phase correlations in the alteration structures. These findings validate and refine existing predictive corrosion models.

A new approach to assess the chemical composition of powder deposits damaging the stone surfaces of historical monuments

Abstract:The issue of conservation of the monumental heritage worldwide is mainly related to atmospheric pollution that causes the degradation of stone surfaces. The powder deposits present on the stone monuments reflect the composition of the aerosol particulate matter (PM) to which the surfaces are exposed, so the chemical characterization of the outermost damaged layers is necessary in order to adopt mitigation measurements to reduce PM emissions. In the present paper, a new analytical approach is proposed to investigate the chemical composition of powder deposits present on Angera stone, a dolomitic rock used in the Richini courtyard, a masterpiece of Lombard Baroque and placed in Milan. Inorganic and organic components present in these deposits have been analyzed by IC (ion chromatography) and a new approach mainly bases on thermal analyses, respectively. Gypsum is the main inorganic constituent indicating a composition similar to that of black crusts, hard black patina covering the degraded building surfaces. Ammonium nitrate present in the powder is able to react with the stone substrate to form magnesium nitrate which can migrate into the porous stone. The carbonaceous fraction powder deposits (i.e. OC = Organic Carbon and EC = Elemental Carbon) have been quantified by a new simple thermal approach based on carbon hydrogen nitrogen (CHN) analysis. The presence of high concentration of EC confirms that the powder deposits are evolving to black crust. Low values of water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC, determined by total organic carbon-TOC), with respect to what is normally found in PM, may indicate a migration process of organic substances into the stone with a worsening of the conservation conditions. The presence of heavy metals of anthropogenic origin and acting as catalysts in the black crust formation process has been highlighted by SEM-EDS (electron microscopy coupled with an energy dispersive spectrometer) as well.

Abstract:This study explores the three‐dimensional structure of Roman glass through the combined use of laboratory and phase‐contrast synchrotron x‐ray micro–computed tomography. This original approach validates a noninvasive analytical procedure designed to enhance the understanding of glass degradation mechanisms, crucial for the preservation of historical artefacts. The high‐resolution images obtained reveal the intricate internal structure and morphology of various forms of glass deterioration, including cracking, pitting, and the formation of multilayered iridescent patinas. The research provides compelling evidence of corrosion processes and interaction mechanisms with burial soil, shedding light on the chemical and physical interactions that occur over centuries. By characterizing and examining the long‐term alteration of ancient glass, this work contributes to the field of archaeometry, offering insights into how different types of glass withstand the test of time in diverse environmental conditions. The findings have important implications for conservation strategies, enabling better preservation techniques for glass artefacts.

Abstract:To understand in-depth material properties, manufacturing, and conservation in cultural heritage artefacts, there is a strong need for advanced characterization tools that enable analysis down to the nanometric scale. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED) techniques, like 3D precession electron diffraction tomography and ASTAR phase/orientation mapping, are proposed to study cultural heritage materials at nanoscale. In this work, we show how electron crystallography in TEM helps to determine precise structural information and phase/orientation distribution of various pigments in cultural heritage materials from various historical periods like Greek amphorisks, Roman glass tesserae, and pre-Hispanic Maya mural paintings. Such TEM-based methods can be an alternative to synchrotron techniques and can allow distinguishing accurately different crystalline phases even in cases of identical or very close chemical compositions at the nanometric scale.

Abstract:In cultural heritage, paint stratigraphies are complex systems typically consisting of various paint layers with fine crystalline phases mixed with coarse pigment and filler grains. This complexity poses significant challenges for X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. In this work, we employed synchrotron radiation micro-X-ray diffraction in transmission geometry (SR-μTXRD) with linear mapping to develop a novel approach for studying the crystalline phases (pigments and fillers) in mock-up paint stratigraphies. A targeted approach was followed for qualitative, quantitative, and microstructural analysis, combining signals from micrometric crystallites and coarse single crystals as well as from randomly oriented and iso-oriented crystalline phases. This allows for identifying, localizing, and quantifying these phases even in low fractions and distinguishes the same phases across different layers with varying grain sizes or spatial orientations. Critical analysis of 2D XRD patterns, coupled with full-profile fitting performed by the Rietveld method, provides insights into material preparation (e.g., grinding), painting technique (e.g., color palette, use of fillers, brushing), and crystallo-chemical modifications over time. This analytical approach, integrating spatially resolved investigation with high-quality phase characterization, enhances the potential of specific XRD methodologies for a 2D investigation of multi-phase materials in cultural heritage, even without dedicated micro-mapping techniques.

Abstract:Initial physicochemical assessment of cultural materials plays a critical role in the research and management of cultural heritage, serving as a foundation for comprehending deterioration mechanisms and developing effective conservation treatments. However, this knowledge is more advanced in several cultural materials such as artwork or historic buildings, than in bone and fossils. This study focuses on bone material conservation, applying diagenetic methods for characterizing and assessing the state of conservation of archaeological bones from Pit 1 at Barranc de la Boella (BB), an open-air archaeological site from the late Early Pleistocene, from a conservation perspective. Microstructural analyses, including mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and histological analysis, alongside microchemical analyses through Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR), and FTIR with KBr pellets and X-ray Diffraction (XRD), were conducted to evaluate the decay processes affecting the bones. Results indicated poor bone preservation characterized by high porosity, significant microbial attack, collagen degradation, and the potential recrystallization of bioapatite into fluorapatite. These findings underscore the substantial challenges presented by open-site conditions to preservation efforts and highlight the need for suitable conservation treatments, such as consolidation to reinforce the microstructure. The study emphasizes the importance of characterizing archaeological bones to understand the factors influencing their preservation states and guide conservation works in this material. This work contributes to the knowledge of diagenesis studies to standardize the diagnosis of the state of conservation on archaeological bones.

Abstract:After they have been abandoned, ceramic materials may undergo substantial transformations, all of which may change their macroscopic aspect, mineralogy, chemical composition and microstructure. The intensity and pervasiveness of these transformations on both macro- and micro-scales depend to a great extent not only on their compositional and microstructural features but also on the chemical-physical characteristics of the post-depositional environment in which they were hosted. This contribution describes the main post-depositional transformations observed in ancient ceramics in relation to secondary phases precipitation, mineral dissolution, pristine mineral and amorphous phases transformations into new mineral phases, and chemical leaching and enrichment. The mechanisms responsible for these transformations are described, together with the characteristics which allow us to identify them according to the most common analytical approaches, in order not to introduce misleading interpretations concerning the study of the provenance and production technology of ancient ceramic materials.

Abstract:The accelerated deterioration of carbonate stone artifacts under climate change has long been an urgent issue. Inspired by biomineralization, we developed carboxymethyl chitosan-diammonium hydrogen phosphate (CD) composite and investigated the conservation effectiveness of the CD composite compared to diammonium hydrogen phosphate (DAP) on limestone. The morphologies and microstructures were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The consolidating effectiveness was investigated through a compressive strength test. The protective ability was assessed by disintegration resistance test, acid attack resistance test, salt attack resistance test, and freeze-thaw aging cycle test. SEM observations revealed that carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) served as an effective template, inducing the in situ formation of a uniform and continuous calcium phosphate coating on both the surface and interior of the stone. The tests indicated that the CD composite further enhanced the consolidating effectiveness and improved resistance to disintegration and freeze-thaw cycles. Notably, as an amphiphilic polyelectrolyte, CMCS functioned as a pH buffer and a protective barrier against sodium sulfate salts, which improved the resistance to acid and salt attacks. Additionally, the CD composite did not cause significant variations in the esthetic appearance or water vapor permeability. We then applied the CD composite at an actual carbonate stone cultural heritage site, successfully demonstrating the feasibility of CD application and the reversibility of CMCS in a real-world setting. Based on the study's results, our approach provides a new perspective for developing multifunctional and sustainable conservation materials for carbonate stone artifacts.

Abstract:Calcareous stones have been widely used in artworks and buildings by almost all human cultures. Now, more than ever, the increased environmental pollution and global warming are threatening the stone cultural heritage. Weathering due to physical, chemical and biological factors results in monumental calcareous stone deterioration. These agents induce a progressive dissolution of the mineral matrix, increase porosity, and lead to structural weakening. Bacterial Calcium Carbonate Mineralization is a widespread naturally occurring process which in the last decades was proposed as an environmentally friendly tool to protect monumental and ornamental calcareous stones. The advantage of this treatment is that it mimics the natural process responsible for stone formation, producing a mineral product similar to the stone substrate. This mini review highlights the milestones of the biomineralization approaches with focus on <i>in situ</i> stone artworks protection. The strategies explored to date are based on three main approaches: (i) the use of allochthonous and (ii) autochthonous alive cells that, due to the bacterial metabolism, foster biomineralization; (iii) the cell-free approach which uses fractionated cellular components inducing biomineralization. We discuss the challenging aspects of all these techniques, focusing on <i>in situ</i> applications and suggesting perspectives based on recent advances.

Abstract:In this work, the high-temperature inertization product of a representative batch of samples of cement-asbestos (CA) from different localities in Italy have been characterized with a multidisciplinary approach. All the raw CA samples were heated at 1200°C for 15 min. After firing, they underwent a series of solid state reactions leading to global structural changes of the matrix. Effects of annealing time and temperature on the crystallization kinetics were thoroughly investigated. Both factors acted in favour of equilibrium. Three classes of CA were identified with the aid of phase diagrams and of specific plots relating chemical and mineralogical parameters. This result was considered of importance in view of the potential use of transformed cement-asbestos as a secondary raw material. In principle, the content of CA packages removed from the environment and their corresponding heat-treated products can be classified simply using XRF. This method allows for the selection of appropriate fractions in function of the most suitable recycling solution adopted. Samples belonging to the class called larnite-rich, turned out to be of great interest as possible candidate for substituting a fraction of cement in many building materials and innovative green cement productions.
The Use of Phosphonates to Inhibit Salt Crystallization: A Laboratory Study for the Sustainable Conservation of Mural Paintings in the Hypogea Context

Abstract:This research is focused on the laboratory study of salt crystallization inhibitor products as new materials for conservation treatments which can be applied to mortars and painted plasters; as is well known, salt crystallization is one of the most frequent causes of decay processes on decorated architectural surfaces in a wide range of environments. Specifically, the study targets the field of the preventive conservation of mural paintings within rupestrian heritage sites. For the first time, systematic investigations were performed on mock-ups made of plaster painted with two different pigments: yellow ochre and carbon black. Two types of phosphonate inhibitors, PBTC (2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid) and ATMP (aminotris (methylene phosphonic acid)), were chosen and applied at two different concentrations. Given the limited literature available, and the presence of pigments potentially sensitive to treatment with salt inhibitors, preliminary tests were required. Their effects on the chromatic features of the pigments were evaluated visually and using colorimetry. The changes in the behaviour of water circulation in the mortar resulting from the treatments were evaluated through water vapour permeability and absorption tests. Accelerated crystallization experiments were carried out to assess how inhibitors could influence the growth of salts and the resulting material damage. The latter was carried out by employing sodium sulphate and calcium sulphate solutions, quantifying the damage to the specimens through material loss in weight and the percentage of painted surface loss. Based on the overall results, the product with the best performance was identified was ATMP 0.1% (by volume) in deionized water. The obtained results show that salt inhibitor treatments are promising for in situ application and could represent an innovative approach to promote the sustainable conservation of mural painting, particularly those located in hypogeal contexts, where the salt supply cannot be removed and slowing the growth of salts and/or changing their crystalline habitus may be effective in limiting their damage.

Abstract:The MCX beamline at the synchrotron Elettra is the general purpose diffraction beamline that is well suited for non-destructive and innovative X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments in the field of cultural heritage. The experimental station houses a large number of instruments facilitating a range of different types of analysis. Recently, a comprehensive study of the alteration products in grisaille paints was performed at the beamline. This type of analysis is very important to understand the complex processes involved in the deterioration of this type of glass decoration. An exhaustive characterization of these products and so a full understanding of the mechanism of their formation may lead to the development of new protective materials for conservation and restoration. XRD experiments at the MCX beamline allowed us to recognize the alteration products on the grisailles surface and to propose a mechanism for the formation of alteration patina. Here we present the beamline, its instrumentation and its capabilities by showing an example of the study on grisaille paints.
Understanding the Microstructure of Mortars for Cultural Heritage Using X-ray CT and MIP

Abstract:In this study, the microstructure of mock-up mortar specimens for a historic environment, composed of different mixtures, was studied using mercury intrusion porosity (MIP) and microcomputed tomography (μCT), highlighting the advantages and drawbacks of both techniques. Porosity, sphericity, and pores size distribution were studied, evaluating changes according to mortar composition (aerial and hydraulic binders, quartz sand, and crushed limestone aggregate). The μCT results were rendered using 3D visualization software, which provides complementary information for the interpretation of the data obtained using 3D data-analysis software. Moreover, μCT contributes to the interpretation of MIP results of mortars. On the other hand, MIP showed significant ink-bottle effects in lime and cement mortars samples that should be taken into account when interpreting the results. Moreover, the MIP results highlighted how gypsum mortar samples display a porosity distribution that is best studied using this technique. This multi-analytical approach provides important insights into the interpretation of the porosimetric data obtained. This is crucial in the characterization of mortars and provides key information for the study of building materials and cultural heritage conservation.

Abstract:Methodological challenges have long been an obstacle for the understanding of damage in concrete due to the alkali-silica reaction (ASR). Time-lapse X-ray tomography could be key to advancements but has not been extensively exploited, mainly due to similar electron densities of the different material phases, which leads to poor contrast in the tomograms. To address this limitation, we propose the implementation of two complementary contrast agents, BaSO4 and CsNO3. After optimizing the contents of both agents synergistically for mortars, we realize for the first time a quantitative characterization of the spatial-temporal distributions of both ASR products and cracks, while differentiating their presence in aggregates and in cement paste. This new methodology allowed showing that similar amounts of ASR products were found inside the aggregates and inside the cement paste. The transport of products from inner aggregate regions into the cement paste along propagating cracks was followed in 4D.

Abstract:This review concerns the challenges and perspectives of on-site non-invasive measurements applied to wall mosaics. Wall mosaics, during the centuries, decorated numerous buildings, nowadays being part of world cultural heritage. The preservation and maintenance of these valuable decorations are undoubtedly directly dependent on identifying possible problems that could affect their hidden structure. On-site non-invasive methods, using different contact or no-contact technologies, can offer support in this specific field of application. The choice of the appropriate technique or combination of different techniques depends, in general, on the depth of investigation, the resolution, the possibility to have direct contact with the surfaces or, on the contrary, limited accessibility of the wall mosaics due to their location (e.g., vaults), as well as deterioration problems, (e.g., voids, detachments, or humidity effects). This review paper provides a brief overview of selected recent studies regarding non-invasive methods applied to the analysis of wall mosaics. This review, discussing the assessment of advantages and limitations for each method here considered, also considers possible future developments of imaging techniques in this specific context for cultural heritage applications.
Crystallization Via Non-Classical Pathways: Nanoscale Imaging of Mineral Surfaces

Abstract:The advancement in analytical imaging techniques, including atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning and transmission electron microscopies (SEM and TEM), has allowed us to observe processes occurring at mineral surfaces in situ at a nanoscale in real space and time and hence giving the possibility to elucidate reaction mechanisms. Classical crystal growth theories have been established for well over 100 years and while they can still be applied to explain crystal growth in many growth scenarios, we now know that these models are not always an accurate description of the mechanism of all crystal/mineral growth processes, especially where nanoparticle formation is observed. Consequently there is a current challenge at the forefront of understanding crystal/mineral growth mechanisms. This work describes experimental observations of non-classical crystallization processes at the nanoscale. Using AFM as well as SEM and TEM imaging, we demonstrate that many minerals commonly grow by the attachment of nanoparticles on an existing mineral surface, often resulting from the coupling of dissolution of a parent phase and the precipitation of a new product mineral. Through varied examples of crystal/mineral growth, including calcite and other carbonates, barite, brucite, and apatite, we define the importance of the mineral-fluid interface and the aqueous fluid interfacial (boundary) layer in the control of crystal growth. Whether a crystal will grow by classical monomer attachment resulting in step advancement or by the formation, aggregation and merging of nanoparticles, will be controlled by the aqueous fluid composition at the mineral-fluid interface. The processes described also allow for the development of porosity within the new mineral and hence have important consequences for fluid movement and element mobility within the Earth. Additionally an understanding of natural mineral growth has implications for geomimetic applications for the manufacture of functional engineered materials.

Abstract:Recent advancements in cultural heritage preservation have increasingly focused on the development and application of new composites, harnessing the diverse properties of their components. This study reviews the current state of research and practical applications of these innovative materials, emphasizing the use of inorganic phosphatic materials (in particular the hydroxyapatite) and various polymers. The compatibility of phosphatic materials with calcareous stones and the protective properties of polymers present a synergistic approach to addressing common deterioration mechanisms, such as salt crystallization, biological colonization, and mechanical weathering. By examining recent case studies and experimental results, this paper highlights the effectiveness, challenges, and future directions for these composites in cultural heritage conservation. The findings underscore the potential of these materials to enhance the durability and aesthetic integrity of heritage stones, promoting sustainable and long-term preservation solutions.
